Abstract
Bis(3-indolyl)methanes (BIMs) are known for their important bioactivities, which include anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. In this study, we are disclosing a metal catalyst-free synthesis of BIMs in high yields via the alkylation reaction of indoles and alcohols in the presence of lithium tert-butoxide base. Notably, oxygen in air played an important role as an oxidant for the facilitation of this transformation. Interestingly, unactivated aliphatic alcohols could be successfully used as alkylating reagents in the alkylation reactions of indole. Especially, several chemical intermediates detected by GC-MS gave important information about the mechanism insights. This method demonstrated cost and environmental advantages for the development of green processes.

Abstract
Herein, we report a ligand-centered redox-controlled oxygen-dependent switchable selectivity during ruthenium-catalyzed selective synthesis of C3-alkylated indoles and bis(indolyl)methanes (BIMs). A wide variety of C3-alkylated indoles and BIMs were prepared selectively in moderate to good isolated yields by coupling a wide variety of indoles and alcohols, catalyzed by a well-defined, air-stable, and easy-to-prepare Ru(II)-catalyst (1a) bearing a redox-active tridentate pincer (L1a). Catalyst 1a efficiently catalyzed the C3-alkylation of indoles under an argon atmosphere while, under an oxygen environment, exclusively producing the BIMs. A few drug molecules containing BIMs were also synthesized efficiently. 1a exhibited excellent chemoselectivity with alcohols containing internal carbon-carbon double bonds. Mechanistic investigation revealed that the coordinated azo-aromatic ligand actively participates during the catalysis. During the dehydrogenation of alcohols, the azo-moiety of the ligand stores the hydrogen removed from the alcohols and subsequently transfers the hydrogen to the alkylideneindolenine intermediate, forming the C3-alkylated indoles. While under an oxygen environment, the transfer of hydrogen from the ligand scaffold to the molecular oxygen generates H2O2, leaving no scope for hydrogenation of the alkylideneindolenine intermediate, rather than it undergoing 1,4-Michael-type addition forming the BIMs.

Abstract
The transition metal-free Cs2CO3/Oxone®-mediated C3-alkylation of indoles proceeds in moderate to high yields with a variety of C4-C7 functionalized indoles and is applicable to 2-, 3- and 4-hydroxymethyl pyridines and related electron-deficient heterocycles, permitting novel late-stage drug functionalizations. Preliminary mechanistic studies support a hydrogen autotransfer-type chain process starting with an initial oxidation of the alcohol to the corresponding aldehyde, followed by a subsequent condensation onto indole and reduction/hydride delivery from another equivalent of the primary alcohol.

Abstract
The design, prototypical synthesis, isolation, and characterization of bis(indolylmethyl) ethers from corresponding indolylcarbinols is described. This approach involves very mild conditions and exhibits good scope for indolylcarbinols (both N-electron withdrawing group and N-electron donating group). Cross etherification between two electronically different indolylcarbinols is also demonstrated for the generation of unsymmetrical ethers. For the first time, the intermediacy of the bis(indolylmethyl) ethers for the formation of bis(indolyl)methanes from indolylcarbinols is proved experimentally and by 1H NMR analysis.

Abstract
The indole moiety is an important N-heterocycle found in natural products, and a key structural component of many value-added chemicals including pharmaceuticals. In particular, bis(3-indolyl)methanes (BIMs) are an important subgroup of indoles, composed of two indole units. Herein, we report the development of a simple method to access BIMs derivatives in yields of up to 77 % by exploiting a tBuOK-mediated coupling reaction of indoles and benzyl alcohols.

Abstract
Whereas iron catalysts usually promote catalyzed C3-alkylation of indole derivatives via a borrowing-hydrogen methodology using alcohols as the electrophilic partners, this contribution shows how to switch the selectivity towards N-alkylation. Thus, starting from indoline derivatives, N-alkylation was efficiently performed using a tricarbonyl(cyclopentadienone) iron complex as the catalyst in trifluoroethanol in the presence of alcohols leading to the corresponding N-alkylated indoline derivatives in 31-99 % yields (28 examples). The one-pot, two-step strategy for the selective N-alkylation of indolines is completed by an oxidation to give the corresponding N-alkylated indoles in 31-90 % yields (15 examples). This unprecedented oxidation methodology involves an iron salt catalyst associated with (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) and a stoichiometric amount of t-BuOOH at room temperature.

Abstract
The catalytic dehydrogenation of alcohols is essential for the sustainable production of valuable products. This provids a new strategy for green organic synthesis in chemical industries. Herein, we describe a manganese-based catalytic system that enables the efficient synthesis of C3-alkylated indoles from benzyl alcohols and indoles via the borrowing hydrogen process. Furthermore, dehydrogenative coupling of 2-arylethanols and indoles yields C3-alkenylated indoles. Meanwhile, reacting 2-aminophenethanol instead of indoles can also obtain the corresponding indole products with high selectivity under the same conditions.

Abstract
Despite the extensive studies on the reactions between conventional diazocompounds and indoles, these are still limited by the independent synthesis of the carbene precursors, the specific catalysts, and the required multi-step manipulation of the products. In this work, we explore redox-active carbenes in the expedited and divergent synthesis of functionalized indoles. NHPI-DA displays unusual efficiency and selectivity to yield insertion products that can be swiftly elaborated into boron and carbon substituents that are particularly problematic in carbene-mediated reactions.

Abstract
An acceptorless dehydrogenative strategy for the synthesis of polyfluoroalkylated bis-indoles is described by employing an earth-abundant nickel-based catalytic system under air. The notable feature of the present transformation is the use of bench stable and easily affordable polyfluorinated alcohols without any pre-functionalization for the introduction of precious polyfluoroalkyl groups. The developed straightforward protocol accomplished biologically relevant fluoroalkyl bis-indoles in a sustainable fashion. Extensive DFT study predicts the unique role of indole molecules which stabilizes the transition states during the dehydrogenation process of polyfluorinated alcohols, presumably through non-covalent π⋅⋅⋅π and H-bonding interactions.

Abstract
The efficient metal-free oxidative coupling of arylmethylamines with indoles has been developed using molecular oxygen as a green oxidant. The present reaction provides a novel route towards the synthesis of 3,3'-bis(indolyl)methanes in excellent yields of up to 95% via C-C and C-N bond formation. This attractive and environmentally friendly one-pot protocol is a simple procedure that features inexpensive acetic acid as the catalyst and molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant, and it supports a wide substrate scope with the good tolerance of functional groups.

Abstract
A mild and efficient nickel-catalyzed method for the coupling of unactivated primary and secondary alkyl chlorides with the C-H bond of indoles and pyrroles is described which demonstrates a high level of chemo and regioselectivity. The reaction tolerates numerous functionalities, such as halide, alkenyl, alkynyl, ether, thioether, furanyl, pyrrolyl, indolyl and carbazolyl groups including acyclic and cyclic alkyls under the reaction conditions. Mechanistic investigation highlights that the alkylation proceeds through a single-electron transfer (SET) process with Ni(i)-species being the active catalyst. Overall, the alkylation follows a Ni(i)/Ni(iii) pathway involving the rate-influencing two-step single-electron oxidative addition of alkyl chlorides.

Abstract
A strategy for the gold(III)-catalyzed decarboxylative coupling reaction of indole-3-carboxylic acids with benzylic alcohols has been developed. This cascade reaction is devised as a straightforward and efficient synthetic route for 3-benzylindoles in moderate to excellent yields (50-93%). A Hammett study of the protodecarboxylation gives a negative ρ value, suggesting that there is a buildup of positive charge on the indole ring in the transition state. Furthermore, comparison of initial rates in H2O and in D2O reveals an observed kinetic solvent isotope effect (KSIE = 2.7). This simple protocol, which affords the desired products with CO2 and water as the coproducts, can be achieved under mild conditions without the need for base or other additives in water.

Abstract
A visible-light-engaged 2-fold site-selective alkylation of indole derivatives with aliphatic ethers or alcohols has been accomplished for easy access to symmetric 3,3'-bisindolylmethane derivatives. The experimental data suggest a sequential photoredox catalysis induced radical addition and proton-mediated Friedel-Crafts alkylation mechanism.

Abstract
The direct C-3 alkylation of indoles with primary and secondary alcohols through the combination of KOH and an N-heterocyclic carbene is described. The KOH/NHC-catalysed system can give desired C-3 alkylated indoles with high selectivity in moderate to excellent yields. Moreover, this process has obvious advantages such as high atom economy and the absence of a metal source.
