Unveiling the Chemistry and Synthetic Potential of Catalytic Cycloaddition Reaction of Allenes: A Review

Allenes with two carbon-carbon double bonds belong to a unique class of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The central carbon atom of allene is sp hybridized and forms two σ-bonds and two π-bonds with two terminal sp² hybridized carbon atoms. The chemistry of allenes has been well documented over the last decades. They are more reactive than alkenes due to higher strain and exhibit significant axial chirality, thus playing a vital role in asymmetric synthesis. Over a variety of organic transformations, allenes specifically undergo classical metal catalyzed cycloaddition reactions to obtain chemo-, regio- and stereoselective cycloadducts. This review briefly describes different types of annulations including [2+2], [2+2+1], [3+2], [2+2+2], [4+2], [5+2], [6+2] cycloadditions using titanium, cobalt, rhodium, nickel, palladium, platinum, gold and phosphine catalyzed reactions along with a mechanistic study of some highlighted protocols. The synthetic applications of these reactions towards the synthesis of natural products such as aristeromycin, ent-[3]-ladderanol, waihoensene(-)-vindoline and (+)-4-epi-vindoline have also been described.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Enantioselective [2 + 2 + 1] Cycloaddition of 1,6-Enynes with Cyclopropylideneacetamides

It has been established that a cationic rhodium(I)/( R)-tol-BINAP or ( R)-BINAP complex catalyzes the enantioselective [2 + 2 + 1] cycloaddition of 1,6-enynes, possessing monosubstituted alkene units, with cyclopropylideneacetamides at room temperature through the elimination of ethylene to give bicyclic (cyclopent-2-en-1-ylidene)acetamides with high enantioselectivity.

Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed Ring-Closing Reaction of Allene-Alkene-Alkynes: One-Step Construction of Tricyclo[6.4.0.02,6 ] and Bicyclo[6.3.0] Skeletons from Linear Carbon Chains

Treatment of dodecatrienyne derivatives with [RhCl(CO)₂ ]₂ in refluxing toluene effected the cycloisomerization to produce tricyclo[6.4.0.0^2,6 ]dodecadienes. The one-carbon shortened undecatrienyne derivatives, however, afforded bicyclo[6.3.0]undecatriene derivatives instead of tricyclic compounds, the latter of which are well known as a basic skeleton of naturally occurring octanoids. On the basis of two experiments with deuterated substrates, a plausible reaction mechanism for the construction of these products was proposed.

Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed Cycloisomerization of Homopropargylallene-Alkynes through C(sp3 )-C(sp) Bond Activation

Upon exposure to a catalytic amount of [RhCl(CO)₂ ]₂ in 1,4-dioxane, homopropargylallene-alkynes underwent a novel cycloisomerization accompanied by the migration of the alkyne moiety of the homopropargyl functional group to produce six/five/five tricyclic compounds in good yields. A plausible mechanism was proposed on the basis of an experiment with ¹³ C-labeled substrate. The resulting tricyclic derivatives were further converted into the corresponding bicyclo[3.3.0] skeletons with vicinal cis dihydroxy groups.

Beyond geminal diesters: increasing the scope of metal-mediated vinylcyclopropane annulations while decreasing pre-activation

This review covers the transition metal mediated annulation chemistry of vinylcyclopropanes with an emphasis on non-donor–acceptor examples, and where pertinent, examples of natural product syntheses are shown.

Creation of Novel Cyclization Methods Using sp-Hybridized Carbon Units and Syntheses of Bioactive Compounds

Some recent results on the development of new and reliable procedures for the construction of diverse ring systems based on the chemistry of sp-hybridized species, especially allene functionality, are described. This review includes: (i) synthesis of the multi-cyclic skeletons by combination of the π-component of allene with suitable other π-components such as alkyne, alkene, or additional allene under Rh-catalyzed conditions; (ii) synthesis of heterocycles as well as carbocycles by reaction of the sp-hybridized center of allene with some nucleophiles in an endo-mode manner; and (iii) total syntheses of natural products and related compounds from the sp-hybridized starting materials.

Fulvene Synthesis by Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed [2+2+1] Cycloaddition: Synthesis and Catalytic Activity of Tunable Cyclopentadienyl Rhodium(III) Complexes with Pendant Amides

It has been established that a Rh^I+ /segphos complex catalyzes the [2+2+1] cycloaddition of 1,6-diynes with cyclopropylideneacetamides to give substituted fulvenes in good yields. The reductive complexation of the product fulvenes with RhCl₃ in EtOH furnished the corresponding dinuclear cyclopentadienyl Rh^III complexes bearing a pendant amide moiety. These Rh^III complexes were highly active catalysts for oxidative annulation and cyclization through C(sp² )-H and C(sp³ )-H functionalization.

Rh-catalysed [5 + 1] cycloaddition of allenylcyclopropanes and CO: reaction development and application to the formal synthesis of (−)-galanthamine

A Rh-catalyzed [5 + 1] cycloaddition of allenylcyclopropanes and CO has been developed to synthesize functionalized 2-methylidene-3,4-cyclohexenones. This cycloaddition reaction has been utilized as a key step in the formal synthesis of natural product (−)-galanthamine.
