Abstract
For practical analysis and simultaneous detection of arbutin (AR) and hydrochinone (HQ) in cosmetics, an electrochemical sensor has been designed based on nitrogen and sulfur co-doped Fe-Ni alloy (N,S-FeNi3/C) nanoparticles. The N,S-FeNi3/C has been prepared for the first time via hydrothermal synthesis and high-temperature carbonization. N,S-FeNi3/C not only improves the charge transfer to the surface, but also provides rich active sites and fast ion diffusion rates owing to the iron and nickel bimetallic materials. In addition, the d-band structure of transition metals (nickel and iron) introduced by the N and S atoms exhibits an electronic structure similar to that of noble metal catalysts, thus enhancing electrocatalytic activity and increasing conductivity. Additionally, the double doping of S and N atoms significantly increases the active sites of carbon atoms; thus, N-S-FeNi3/C exhibits excellent electrochemical catalytic activity for the oxidation of AR and HQ. Further, the N,S-FeNi3/C sensor is used for the simultaneous determination of HQ and AR by square-wave pulse voltammetry. Distinct oxidation peaks of HQ and AR are observed at potentials of +0.028 V and +0.352 V (vs. SCE). The electrical signal increases linearly in the HQ concentration ranges of 0.1-100 μM and 0.05-70 μM for the simultaneous determination of AR and HQ with a detection limit as low as 0.0476 and 0.0135 μM (S/N = 3), respectively. Thus, rapid and accurate detection of AR and HQ in spiked cosmetics is successfully achieved, with a recovery ranging from 96.4 to 104.2%, and the relative standard deviation is lower than 3.8-4.0%.

Abstract
Introduction: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a multifunctional polypeptide cytokine composed of two glycoprotein chains, which plays an important role in many cellular reactions, pathological processes, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and so on. The detection of IL-6 plays a promising role in the cognition of clinical diseases. Methods: 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) was immobilized on the gold nanoparticles modified platinum carbon (PC) electrode with the linker IL-6 antibody, and finally formed an electrochemical sensor that specifically recognized IL-6. Through the highly specific antigen-antibody reaction, the IL-6 concentration of the samples to be detected. The performance of the sensor was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Results: The experimental results showed that the linear detection range of the sensor for IL-6 was 100 pg/mL-700 pg/mL and the detection limit was 3 pg/mL. In addition, the sensor had the advantages of high specificity, high sensitivity, high stability and reproducibility under the interference environment of bovine serum albumin (BSA), glutathione (GSH), glycine (Gly) and neuron specific enolase (NSE), which provided a prospect for specific antigen detection sensor. Discussion: The prepared electrochemical sensor successfully detected the content of IL-6 in standard and biological samples, showing excellent detection performance. No significant difference was found between the detection results of the sensor and that of ELISA. The sensor showed a very broad prospect in the application and detection of clinical samples.

Abstract
A novel deep-ultraviolet and dual-emission carbon nanodots (DUCDs)-based dual-channel ratiometric probe was prepared by a one-pot environmental-friendly hydrothermal process using guanidine as the only starting material for sensing polyphenol in tea sample (TPPs). Under the exposure to TPPs, the DUCDs not only provided a characteristic colorimetric response to TPPs, but also displayed TPPs-sensitive ratiometric fluorescence quenching. The detection mechanism was proved to be that enrichment-specific hydroxyl sites (e.g., -NH2 and -COOH) of DUCDs can specifically react with phenolic hydroxyl groups of TPPs to generate dynamic amide and carboxylate bonds by dehydration and/or condensation reaction. As a result, a new carbon nanomaterial with decrement of surface passivation groups, inherent light-absorbing, and invalid fluorescence emission was generated. The ratio (FL297nm/FL395nm) of fluorescence intensity at 297 nm and 395 nm of DUCDs excited at 275 nm decreased with increasing TPPs concentration. The linearity range was 5.0 ng/mL to 100 µg/mL with a detection limit (DL) of 3.5 ± 0.04 ng/mL for TPPs (n = 3, 3σ/k). Colorimetry of DUCDs, best measured as absorbance at 320 nm, was increased linearly in the TPP concentration range 200 ng/mL-200 µg/mL with a DL of 94.7 ± 0.04 ng/mL (n = 3, 3σ/k). The probe was successfully applied to the determination of TPPs in real tea samples, showing potential application prospects in food analysis.

Abstract
Polyphenols, the most abundant components in tea, determine the quality and health function of tea. The analysis of polyphenols in tea is a topic of increasing interest. However, the complexity of the tea matrix, the wide variety of teas, and the difference in determination purposes puts forward higher requirements for the detection of tea polyphenols. Many efforts have been made to provide a highly sensitive and selective analytical method for the determination and characterization of tea polyphenols. In order to provide new insight for the further development of polyphenols in tea, in the present review we summarize the recent literature for the detection of tea polyphenols from the perspectives of determining total polyphenols and individual polyphenols in tea. There are a variety of methods for the analysis of total tea polyphenols, which range from the traditional titration method, to the widely used spectrophotometry based on the color reaction of Folin–Ciocalteu, and then to the current electrochemical sensor for rapid on-site detection. Additionally, the application of improved liquid chromatography (LC) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) were emphasized for the simultaneous determination of multiple polyphenols and the identification of novel polyphenols. Finally, a brief outline of future development trends are discussed.

Abstract
Currently, there is growing interest in screening and quantifying antioxidants from biological samples in the quest for natural and effective antioxidants to combat free radical-related pathological complications. Antioxidants play an important role in human health and provide a defense against many diseases. Due to the valuable dietary role of these compounds, the analysis and determination of their amount in food is of particular importance. In recent years, many attempts have been made to provide simple, fast, and economical analytical approaches for the on-site detection and determination of antioxidant activity in food antioxidants. In this regard, electrochemical sensors and biosensors are considered promising tools for antioxidant research due to their high sensitivity, fast response time, and ease of miniaturization; thus, they are used in a variety of fields, including food analysis, drug screening, and toxicity research. Herein, we review the recent advances in sensors and biosensors for the detection of antioxidants, underlying principles, and emphasizing advantages, along with limitations regarding the ability to discriminate between the specific antioxidant or quantifying total antioxidant content. In this work, both direct and indirect methods for antioxidants detecting with electrochemical sensors and biosensors are analyzed in detail. This review aims to prove how electrochemical sensors and biosensors represent reliable alternatives to conventional methods for antioxidant analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The recovery of phenolic compounds is seen as an arduous task because phenolic compounds are available as free aglycones, as sugar or ester conjugates, or as polymers with several monomeric components. This study looks at the optimization of factors that affect the efficiency for the extraction of phenolic compounds from the stem-bark of Funtumia elastica. METHODS Five independent variables (solvent concentration, time, the temperature, solid-liquid ratio, and pH) of the extraction process were selected. Single factor analysis as well as the response surface method was used to evaluate the impact of the selected factors on the total phenolic content. The effect of the extraction factors on the phenolic content was tested for its statistical significant (p <0.05). For the response surface method, a five/factor, five/level central composite design was used, and a fitted second-order polynomial regression model equation was used to show how the extraction parameters affected the total phenolic recovery. RESULTS The predicted value (R² of 0.5917) agreed with the adjusted value (R² of 0.7707). The residuals for response predictions were less than 5%. The optimal factors for the extraction were ethanol concentration of 75.99% v/v, extraction time of 193.86 minutes, temperature of 63.66°C, pH of 5.62, and solid-liquid ratio of 1:21.12 g/mL. Actual overall content of the phenolic compounds was validated at 82.83 ± 3.335 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) /g weight of extract, which agreed with the predicted response of 89.467 mg GAE/g of the dried extract under the optimal factors. CONCLUSIONS The rich phenolic content of stem-bark of Funtumia elastica points to its potential as a functional medicinal product to alleviate diseases caused by oxidative stress such as asthma, breathing disorders, inflammation, and cardiovascular diseases. The results obtained indicate that, the studied optimal conditions support effective phenolics extraction of Funtumia elastica.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites frequently found in plants that exhibit many different effects on human health. Because of the relevant bioactivity, their identification and quantification in agro-food matrices as well as in biological samples are a fundamental issue in the field of quality control of food and food supplements, and clinical analysis. In this review, a critical selection of sensors and biosensors for rapid and selective detection of phenolic compounds is discussed. Sensors based on electrochemistry, photoelectrochemistry, fluorescence, and colorimetry are discussed including devices with or without specific recognition elements, such as biomolecules, enzymes and molecularly imprinted materials. Systems that have been tested on real matrices are prevalently considered but also techniques that show potential development in the field.
