Logic Signal Amplification System for Sensitive Electrochemiluminescence Detection and Subtype Identification of Cancer Cells

Achieving sensitive detection and accurate identification of cancer cells is vital for diagnosing and treating the disease. Here, we developed a logic signal amplification system using DNA tetrahedron-mediated three-dimensional (3D) DNA nanonetworks for sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection and subtype identification of cancer cells. Specially designed hairpins were integrated into DNA tetrahedral nanostructures (DTNs) to perform a catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) reaction in the presence of target microRNA, forming hyperbranched 3D nanonetworks. Benefiting from the "spatial confinement effect," the DNA tetrahedron-mediated catalytic hairpin assembly (DTCHA) reaction displayed significantly faster kinetics and greater cycle conversion efficiency than traditional CHA. The resulting 3D nanonetworks could load a large amount of Ru(phen)32+, significantly enhancing its ECL signal, and exhibit detection limits for both miR-21 and miR-141 at the femtomolar level. The biosensor based on modular logic gates facilitated the distinction and quantification of cancer cells and normal cells based on miR-21 levels, combined with miR-141 levels, to further identify different subtypes of breast cancer cells. Overall, this study provides potential applications in miRNA-related clinical diagnostics.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Allylation of Aromatic Ketoximes with Vinylaziridines

The Rh(III)-catalyzed reaction of aromatic ketoximes with 2-vinylaziridines affords ortho-allylation products of the phenyl rings of aromatic ketoximes in moderate to excellent yields. The reaction requires 0.5 equiv of NaOAc as a base and occurs under mild conditions. The protocol exhibits ortho-monoallylation selectivity, wide scope of substrates, and good compatibility of functional groups.

Pincer Nickel-Catalyzed Olefination of Alcohols with Benzylphosphine Oxides

N,N,P-Pincer nickel complexes effectively catalyze reaction of alcohols with benzylphosphine oxides to form alkenes in good yields. The protocol suits for a wide scope of substrates and generates only E-configurated alkenes. The method also shows good compatibility of functional groups. Methoxy, methylthio, trifluoromethyl, ketal, fluoro, chloro, bromo, thienyl, and furyl groups are tolerated. The mechanism studies support that the reaction proceeds through catalytic dehydrogenation of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones followed by condensation with benzyldiphenylphosphine oxides in the presence of KOtBu.

Measurements of All-Particle Energy Spectrum and Mean Logarithmic Mass of Cosmic Rays from 0.3 to 30 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A

We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at 3.67±0.05±0.15  PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -2.7413±0.0004±0.0050, while above the knee, it is -3.128±0.005±0.027, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -0.1200±0.0003±0.0341. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components.

Water-ultrastable perovskite CsPbBr3 nanocrystals tailored by surface-confined strategy for amaranth sensing in food samples

A vital challenge is to develop water-stable perovskite nanocrystals owing to the easy attack of its surface vacancy defects by water-molecule. Here, a facile surface-passivated strategy to dramatically improve the chem-stability and luminescent efficiency (LE) of the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (CPB) is proposed, where sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) encapsulate on CPB, generating confined environment (named SDS@CPB). The flexible long carbon-chain of SDS can confine the movement of CPB to form an externally hydrophobic closed-shell and internally structural rigidity through the hydrophobic association between surface hydrophobic groups, improving the LE and maintaining long-term composition of CPB. While the sulfate group in SDS can reduce the surface-defects exposure of CPB through the coordination with Pb2+, inhibiting the invasion of water-molecule. Importantly, an SDS@CPB-based sensor was fabricated to detect amaranth in food samples with a lower detection limit (5.43 nM), which opens a new avenue for food sensing based on high-efficiency perovskite nanocrystals.

Selective identification of p-nitroaniline by bromine-mediated polarization of carbon dots

A fluorometric method based on boron, bromide-codoped carbon dots (BBCNs) was developed for the first time for the highly selective detection of p-nitroaniline (PNA) in wastewater samples. It should be noted that the introduction of bromine greatly increases the molecular polarizability of the probe, which can regulate the energy level matching between the probe and PNA, resulting in the interaction between BBCNs and PNA. In the presence of PNA, the fluorescence of BBCNs is obviously quenched and accompanied by a red shift of the fluorescence band, which might be attributed to the formation of aggregates caused by the polar adsorption of BBCNs and PNA. It is beneficial for constructing a highly selective sensing platform for PNA determination compared to its isomers (o-nitroaniline and m-nitroaniline) through atomic bromine-mediated polarization of the BBCNs. With the help of this mechanism, an excellent linear range of 0.5-300 μM with a low detection limit of 0.24 μM toward PNA was obtained. This work further confirms that there is a significant relationship between the nature of doping elements and the optical and physicochemical properties of fluorescent materials.

[Evaluation of anticoagulant effect and predicted dose of low molecular weight heparin in hemodialysis by anti-Ⅹa factor activity]

The purpose of this study was to explore the reasonable dose of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in hemodialysis (HD) and the strategy of preventing extracorporeal circuit coagulation (ECC). A retrospective case-control study included patients who used LMWH for anticoagulation during maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) in the Hemodialysis Center of Beijing Hospital from December 2020 to January 2021. Basic data such as weight, height, basic kidney disease, dialysis age and anti-Ⅹa factor activity before, during and after dialysis were collected. A total of 46 patients were enrolled in this study, including 5 patients in coagulation group (10.9%) and 41 patients in non-coagulation group (89.1%). The anti-Ⅹa factor activity reached its peak at 0.5 h after the start of HD. The level of anti-Ⅹa factor was incorporated into the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve). The results showed that the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.802 (95% confidence interval: 0.651-0.54, P=0.029), and the cutoff was 0.31 IU/ml (sensitivity 1, specificity 0.683). It is suggested that the body surface area should be used as the basis to estimate the anticoagulant dose of LMWH in HD, and the activity of HD 4 h anti-Ⅹa factor ≤0.31 IU/ml, which is of diagnostic value for ECC. In addition, the results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that dialysis age was an independent risk factor for ECC (OR value 1.319, 95%CI 1.052-1.654, P=0.017). In summary, this study reveals that dialysis age may be a risk factor for ECC and that the activity of HD 4 h anti-Ⅹa factor ≤0.31 IU/ml can be used as a potential diagnostic cut-off point for ECC in HD patients, which provides a scientific basis for monitoring strategies to prevent blood coagulation in HD filters.

[Metagenomic next-generation sequencing for the diagnosis of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation]

Objectives: To investigate the value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the diagnosis of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) . Methods: The data of 98 patients with suspected pulmonary infection after allo-HSCT who underwent pathogen detection from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid between June 2016 and August 2023 at Nanfang Hospital were analyzed. The diagnostic performance of mNGS, conventional methods, and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for PJP were compared. Results: A total of 12 patients were diagnosed with PJP, including 11 with a proven diagnosis and 1 with a probable diagnosis. Among the patients with a proven diagnosis, 1 was positive by both conventional methods and qPCR, and 10 were positive by qPCR only. Pneumocystis jirovecii was detected by mNGS in all 12 patients. The diagnostic sensitivity of mNGS for PJP was 100%, which was greater than that of conventional methods (8.3%, P=0.001) and similar to that of qPCR (91.6%, P=1.000) . A total of 75% of the patients developed mixed pulmonary infections, and cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus were the most common pathogens. Mixed infection was detected in eight patients by mNGS and in five patients by qPCR, but not by conventional methods (P=0.008) . Conclusions: mNGS had good sensitivity for diagnosing PJP after allo-HSCT and was advantageous for detecting mixed infectious pathogens; therefore, mNGS might be an effective supplement to regular detection methods and qPCR.

[Analysis of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among automobile manufacturing logistics workers in Guangzhou]

Objective: To investigate the occurrence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in logistics workers of automobile manufacturing enterprises in Guangzhou, and explore their potential categories and influencing factors, so as to provide basis for the prevention and control of WMSDs in logistics workers of automobile manufacturing enterprises. Methods: From April to May 2020, a convenient sampling method was adopted to select 1442 logistics workers in 2 automobile manufacturing enterprises in Guangzhou as the research objects. The incidence of WMSDs among them was investigated by using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Disorders Questionnaire, and the incidence pattern of WMSDs among the subjects was analyzed by the method of potential category analysis. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression model were used to analyze the influencing factors of the disease. Results: The total prevalence of WMSDs was 42.9% (619/1442). The three parts with high prevalence of WMSDs were neck (23.5%, 339/1442), shoulder (21.3%, 307/1442) and lower back (19.1%, 275/1442). 69.0% (427/619) of the patients showed simultaneous disease in two or more sites. The subjects were divided into four latent groups by the analysis of latent categories: the group with multiple body parts (4.51%), the group with very low or no disease (70.39%), the group with shoulder and neck and upper back (11.37%), and the group with limbs and lower back (13.73%). Multivariate logistic regression showed that compared with the "very low or no disease group", the risk factors of multiple body parts of automotive logistics workers suffering from WMSDs mainly included: Working posture uncomfortable (OR=3.10, 95%CI: 1.44~6.70, P=0.004), often bend and turn (OR=2.36, 95%CI: 1.05~5.29, P=0.037), bend your knees homework for a long time (OR=2.29, 95%CI: 1.17~4.47, P=0.015) ; Working posture uncomfortable (OR=2.26, 95%CI: 1.51~3.38, P<0.001), bending the neck (OR=1.68, 95%CI: 1.03~2.74, P=0.036), neck minister time keep the same position (OR=1.81, 95%CI: 1.22~2.67, P= 0.003) It is a risk factor for shoulder, neck and upper back WMSDs; Risk factors for limb-lower back WMSDs include: Length > 10 years (OR=2.16, 95%CI: 1.24~3.78, P<0.001), the working position uncomfortable (OR=2.38, 95%CI: 1.63~3.48, P<0.001), bending the neck (OR=1.66, 95%CI: 1.03~2.68, P=0.039) . Conclusion: The prevalence rate of WMSDs among logistics workers in automobile manufacturing enterprises is high, which has obvious characteristics of classification and comorbis, and is closely related to individual characteristics such as sufficient rest time and working posture of workers.

[Risk factors of systemic allergic reactions caused by subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy]

Objective: To investigate the incidence and risk factors of systemic allergic reactions induced by subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) in patients undergoing SCIT injections in Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). Methods: This is a single center retrospective cohort study. Using the outpatient information system of PUMCH, the demographic information and injection-related reaction data of patients undergoing SCIT injection in Allergy Department of PUMCH from December 2018 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed to count the incidence and risk factors of systemic allergic reactions caused by SCIT. Mann-Whitney nonparametric test or chi-square test was used for single-factor analysis, and multiple logistic regression was used for multiple-factor analysis. Results: A total of 2 897 patients received 18 070 SCIT injections in Allergy Department during the four years, and 40 systemic allergic reactions occurred, with the overall incidence rate of 0.22%. The incidence of systemic allergic reaction was 0.37% when using imported dust mite preparation and 0.15% when using domestic multi-component allergen preparation. The risk factors significantly related with SCIT-induced systemic allergic reactions in patients using imported dust mite preparation were age less than 18 years old (OR=3.186,95%CI: 1.255-8.085), highest injection concentration (OR value could not be calculated because all patients with systemic reactions were injected with highest concentration), and large local reaction in previous injection (OR=22.264,95%CI: 8.205-60.411). The risk factors for SCIT-induced systemic allergic reactions in patients using domestic allergen preparation were 5 or more types of allergens (OR=3.455,95%CI: 1.147-10.402), highest injection concentration (OR=3.794,95%CI: 1.226-11.740) and large local reaction in previous injection (OR=63.577,95%CI: 22.248-181.683). However, SCIT injection in pollen allergic patients during the pollen season did not show a correlation with systemic allergic reaction. Conclusion: The incidence of SCIT-induced systemic allergic reactions was low in the Chinese patient population of this study. Patients with one or more risk factors, such as multiple allergen injection, highest injection concentration, large local reaction in previous injection, should be given high attention and vigilance against systemic allergic reactions.

Ruthenium(II)-Catalyzed S(II)-Directed Aromatic C-H Allylation with Vinylaziridines

The ruthenium-catalyzed reaction of aryl methyl thioethers with vinylaziridines affords ortho-position mono- or bis-allylation products depending on substituents on the phenyl rings of sulfide substrates or the ratio of reactants. The reaction also features mild reaction conditions, good product yields, wide scope of substrates, good compatibility of functional groups, and the selective formation of E-configurated C-C double bonds.

A single-site porphyrin (Cu)-based COF electrocatalyst for the electrochemical detection of gallic acid sensitively

Sensitive and convenient determination of gallic acid (GA) is vital for food safety. Here, a novel porphyrin (Cu)-based covalent organic framework named as COF(Cu) was successfully synthesized by condensing pre-metalated 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (para-aminophenyl) porphyrin copper (II) and 2,3,6,7-tetra (4-formylphenyl) tetrathiafulvalene ligands. By combining the advantages of porphyrin with tetrathiafulvalene, it may be possible to create a COF with an intrinsically effective charge-transfer channel. In addition, the Cu-N4 type in the COF(Cu) can be regarded as the single-site electrocatalyst. Benefiting from these advantages, the COF(Cu) based electrochemical sensor demonstrated outstanding response to gallic acid (GA). Under the optimal conditions by square wave voltammetry technique, the COF(Cu) modified electrode showed a wide linear range (0.01-1000 μM), a low detection limit (2.81 nM), good reproducibility, acceptable selectivity as well as high stability. Moreover, the established approach was adopted to detect GA in real tea samples with good recoveries, indicating that the COF(Cu) based electrochemical sensor may pave the way for the application in food analysis.

Synthesis of functionalized tetrahydrodibenzo[b,g][1,8]naphthyridin-1(2H)-ones through base-promoted annulation of quinoline-derived dipolarophiles and cyclic enaminones

An eco-friendly and metal-free method for the synthesis of tetrahydrodibenzo[b,g][1,8]naphthyridin-1(2H)-ones was established. Quinoline-derived dipolarophiles and cyclic enaminones as starting materials undergo a 1,4-Michael addition/SNAr tandem annulation reaction affording the target products. This approach features transition metal-free conditions, good functional group tolerance and operational simplicity.

A Homochiral Fulgide Organic Ferroelectric Crystal with Photoinduced Molecular Orbital Breaking

Thermally triggered spatial symmetry breaking in traditional ferroelectrics has been extensively studied for manipulation of the ferroelectricity. However, photoinduced molecular orbital breaking, which is promising for optical control of ferroelectric polarization, has been rarely explored. Herein, for the first time, we synthesized a homochiral fulgide organic ferroelectric crystal (E)-(R)-3-methyl-3-cyclohexylidene-4-(diphenylmethylene)dihydro-2,5-furandione (1), which exhibits both ferroelectricity and photoisomerization. Significantly, 1 shows a photoinduced reversible change in its molecular orbitals from the 3 π molecular orbitals in the open-ring isomer to 2 π and 1 σ molecular orbitals in the closed-ring isomer, which enables reversible ferroelectric domain switching by optical manipulation. To our knowledge, this is the first report revealing the manipulation of ferroelectric polarization in homochiral ferroelectric crystal by photoinduced breaking of molecular orbitals. This finding sheds light on the exploration of molecular orbital breaking in ferroelectrics for optical manipulation of ferroelectricity.

Measurement of Ultra-High-Energy Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission of the Galactic Plane from 10 TeV to 1 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A

The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this Letter, we report the measurements of diffuse γ rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner (15°10  TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of -2.99±0.04, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of ∼3 than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of -2.99±0.07 is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for 10≲E≲60  TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. The LHAASO measurements imply that either additional emission sources exist or cosmic ray intensities have spatial variations.

Institutional Validation Study Inferring 2% MGMT Methylation Positive Impact on Survival in Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma (GBM) Patients

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) MATERIALS/METHODS: is a well-established prognostic factor in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma (GBM). However, there is no consensus on a standardized method of threshold for MGMT testing. Previous studies have reported levels of as little as 1-3% to confer better prognosis. This study reports a single institutional experience of determining methylation status via methylation-sensitive high-resolution melting (MS-HRM). Previous literature suggests 10% cutoff for MGMT methylation using MS-HRM. We hereby report clinical outcomes using a lower threshold of 2%.

MATERIALS/METHODS

GBM patients treated at our institution retrospectively reviewed between the years 2013 and 2022 were included in the study. Patients who received hypofractionated radiation (<60 Gy) were excluded. All patients had MS-HRM test for MGMT methylation status. A real-time PCR assay was used to amplify a 62 base-pair region of MGMT for both methylated and unmethylated alleles. PCR products underwent HRM analysis and the fraction of methylated DNA was determined by comparison with a standard curve. Clinical data were collected retrospectively. Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests were performed to compare survival.

RESULTS

A total of 181 patients with newly diagnosed GBM were initially included in this study. 42 patients treated with hypofractionated radiation were excluded. All patients received concurrent and maintenance temozolomide. Median age was 61.5 years. A total of 84 patients had MGMT methylation levels <2%, and 55 patients had MGMT methylation level ≥ 2% with a median methylation level of 28.5% (Range 0.8%-100%). Patients with MGMT methylation level ≥ 2% had an improved median overall survival (25.1 vs 16.0 months; p = 0.006) and improved median progression free survival (11.3 vs 7.9 months; p = 0.017). In a multivariable mode that included age, use of tumor-treating fields, KPS, sex, and BMI, only age, KPS, and MGMT remained significant.

CONCLUSION

Our institutional review confirmed low level of MGMT hypermethylation (≥ 2%) predicts improved outcome in patients with newly diagnosed GBM. Further investigation on optimal cut off level for MGMT methylation is still warranted.

[Application of augmented reality navigation combined with indocyanine green fluorescence imaging technology in the accurate guidance of laparoscopic anatomical segment 8 liver resection]

Objective: To investigate the application value of augmented reality navigation combined with indocyanine green(ICG) fluorescence imaging technology in laparoscopic anatomical segment 8 liver resection. Methods: Clinical and pathological data from 8 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma located in segment 8 of the liver admitted to the First Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery,Zhujiang Hospital,Southern Medical University from October 2021 to October 2022 were collected restrospectively. Among them,there were 5 males and 3 females,aged between 40 and 72 years. During the operation,the self-developed laparoscopic augmented reality surgical navigation system was used to integrate the three-dimensional liver model with the laparoscopic scene,and ICG fluorescence imaging technology was used to guide the anatomical liver resection of segment 8. The predicted liver resection volume and actual liver resection volume,related surgical indicators and postoperative complications were analyzed. Results: Among the 8 patients, 4 underwent laparoscopic anatomical segment 8 liver resection,1 underwent laparoscopic anatomical ventral subsegment of segment 8 liver resection,2 underwent laparoscopic anatomical ventral subsegment combined with medial subsegment of segment 8 liver resection, and 1 underwent laparoscopic anatomical dorsal subsegment of segment 8 liver resection. All operations were completed under the guidance of augmented reality navigation combined with ICG fluorescence imaging,without conversion to open surgery. The operation time was (276.3±54.8)minutes(range:200 to 360 minutes). Intraoperative blood loss was (75.0±35.4)ml(range:50 to 150 ml). No blood transfusion was performed during the operation. The length of postoperative hospital stay was (7.6±0.8)days(range:7 to 9 days). There were no deaths or postoperative complications such as bleeding or biliary fistula during the perioperative period. Conclusion: Augmented reality navigation combined with ICG fluorescence imaging technology can guide the implementation of laparoscopic anatomical segment 8 liver resection.

An eco-friendly fluorometric assay for high-sensitive meloxicam quantitation in biological matrices

Meloxicam (Mel), as a powerful and effective anti-inflammatory drug, is commonly employed for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases; however, the use of Mel at high doses or for extended periods could cause severe side effects in human visceral organs. Therefore, a simple, rapid, and reliable method is urgently needed to monitor Mel in biological samples. Herein, novel water-soluble luminescent nano-carbon dots (nano-Cdots) with outstanding physicochemical properties were prepared by a one-pot high-temperature hydrothermal process of ellagic acid and guanidine. The nano-Cdots were further used as an optical probe for the sensitive detection of Mel in serum samples through the cooperative mechanisms of the inner filter effect and photoelectron transfer. By employing this sensor, an excellent linear correlation was achieved between the relative luminescent intensity [(PL0 - PL)/PL0] and the concentration of Mel in the range of 0.1 to 200 μM, with a limit of detection of 34.68 nM (3σ/k). This sensor was effectively employed for the analysis of Mel in real serum samples, implying its potential development prospects for the advancement of drug analysis with carbon-based probes.

Large Phase-Transition Temperature Enhancement Achieved in a Layered Lead Iodide Hybrid Crystal by H/F Substitution

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides with structural flexibility and solution processability have been widely investigated for different application scenarios. However, the effective construction of phase-transition materials with a high phase-transition temperature (Ttr) for potential practical applications remains a great challenge, and reports on the regulation of Ttr with significant enhancement have been rare. In this manuscript, we have realized a large Ttr increase of 148 K in a layered hybrid lead iodide crystal (4-FTMBA)4Pb3I10 (4-FTMBA = 4-fluoro-N,N,N-trimethylbenzenaminium) by the H/F substitution strategy. Compared to the parent (TMBA)4Pb3I10 (TMBA = N,N,N-trimethylbenzenaminium), H/F substitution preserves the structural framework and crystal symmetry in (4-FTMBA)4Pb3I10. The introduction of heavier fluorine will significantly increase the motion barrier for the order-disorder transition, resulting in the remarkably improved Ttr. Temperature-dependent crystal structures, Raman spectra, and dielectric analyses well support the phase-transition behavior. In addition, evident thermochromism with a tunable direct band gap in (4-FTMBA)4Pb3I10 has been observed using UV-vis spectra. To the best of our knowledge, the achieved Ttr enhancement of 148 K by H/F substitution is the highest among the organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide phase-transition materials. This finding would greatly inspire the rational design of functional materials with high performance.

[Clinical features and antimicrobial resistance of invasive non-typhoid Salmonella infection in children at Xiamen]

Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics, serogroups and antimicrobial resistance of invasive non-typhoid Salmonella infection in children at Xiamen. Methods: Retrospective cohort study. The clinical manifestations, treatment, prognosis, serogroups and antimicrobial resistance of 29 hospitalized children with invasive non-typhoid Salmonella infection confirmed by blood, cerebrospinal fluid, bone marrow and other sterile body fluids or deep pus culture at the Department of Infectious Diseases, the Department of Orthopedics and the Department of General Surgery in Xiamen Children's Hospital from January 2016 to December 2021 were analyzed. According to the clinical diagnosis criteria, the patients were divided into sepsis group and non-sepsis group (bacteremia and local suppurative infection). The inflammatory markers, serogroups distribution and drug resistance were compared between the two groups. Comparison between groups using Mann-Whitney U test and χ² test. Results: Among the 29 cases, there were 17 males and 12 females, with an onset age of 14 (9, 25) months, and 10 cases (34%) of patients were younger than 1 year old, 15 cases (52%) under 1 to 3 years old, and 4 cases (14%) greater than or equal 3 years old. The onset time of 25 cases (86%) was from April to September. The diseases included 19 cases (66%) septicemia (2 of which were combined with suppurative meningitis), 10 cases (34%) non-sepsis group, including 7 cases bacteremia and 3 cases local suppurative infection (2 cases of osteomyelitis, 1 case of appendicitis with peritonitis). The clinical manifestations were fever in 29 cases (100%), diarrhea and abdominal pain in 18 cases (62%), cough and runny nose in 10 cases (34%). Eighteen cases (62%) were cured and 11 cases (38%) were improved by effective antibiotics treatment. C-reactive protein in sepsis group was significantly higher than that in non-sepsis group (25.2 (16.1, 56.4) vs. 3.4 (0.5, 7.5) mg/L, Z=-3.81, P<0.001).The serogroups of C, B and E were the most prevalent among non-typhoid Salmonella isolates, accounting for 10 cases (34%), 9 cases (31%) and 7 cases (24%) respectively. Antibacterial drug sensitivity test showed that the sensitivity rates of imipenem, ertapenem and piperaciratazobactam were all 100% (31/31), those of ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, and cefepime were 94% (29/31), 94% (29/31) and 97% (30/31) respectively. The drug resistance rates of ampicillin, ampicillin-sulbactam and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole were 51% (16/31), 48% (15/31) and 48% (15/31) respectively, those of cefazolin, cefotetan, tobramycin, gentamicin and amikacinwere all 100% (31/31). There were no significant differences in the drug resistance rates of ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, aztreonam, ampicillin-sulbactam, ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin between the sepsis group and the non-sepsis group (χ²=0.31,0.31,0.00,0.02,0.02,0.02,0.26, all P>0.05). Conclusions: Invasive non-typhoid Salmonella infection in children at Xiamen mainly occurred in infants younger than 3 years old.The main clinical manifestations are fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea. C-reactive protein can be served as the laboratory indicators for indicating sepsis. The third generation of cephalosporins is recommended as the first choice for treatment.

The First Enantiomeric Stereogenic Sulfur-Chiral Organic Ferroelectric Crystals

Chiral ferroelectric crystals with intriguing features have attracted great interest and many with point or axial chirality based on the stereocarbon have been successively developed in recent years. However, ferroelectric crystals with stereogenic heteroatomic chirality have never been documented so far. Here, we discover and report a pair of enantiomeric stereogenic sulfur-chiral single-component organic ferroelectric crystals, Rs -tert-butanesulfinamide (Rs -tBuSA) and Ss -tert-butanesulfinamide (Ss -tBuSA) through the deep understanding of the chemical design of molecular ferroelectric crystals. Both enantiomers adopt chiral-polar point group 2 (C2 ) and exhibit mirror-image relationships. They undergo high-temperature 432F2-type plastic ferroelectric phase transition around 348 K. The ferroelectricity has been well confirmed by ferroelectric hysteresis loops and domains. Polarized light microscopy records the evolution of the ferroelastic domains, according with the fact that the 432F2-type phase transition is both ferroelectric and ferroelastic. The very soft characteristics with low elastic modulus and hardness reveals their excellent mechanical flexibility. This finding indicates the first stereosulfur chiral molecular ferroelectric crystals, opening up new fertile ground for exploring molecular ferroelectric crystals with great application prospects.

A tera-electron volt afterglow from a narrow jet in an extremely bright gamma-ray burst

Some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have a tera-electron volt (TeV) afterglow, but the early onset of this has not been observed. We report observations with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory of the bright GRB 221009A, which serendipitously occurred within the instrument field of view. More than 64,000 photons >0.2 TeV were detected within the first 3000 seconds. The TeV flux began several minutes after the GRB trigger, then rose to a peak about 10 seconds later. This was followed by a decay phase, which became more rapid ~650 seconds after the peak. We interpret the emission using a model of a relativistic jet with half-opening angle ~0.8°. This is consistent with the core of a structured jet and could explain the high isotropic energy of this GRB.

Photochromic Single-Component Organic Fulgide Ferroelectric with Photo-Triggered Polarization Response

Organic photochromic compounds have been widely investigated for optical memory storage and switches. Very recently, we pioneeringly discovered optical control of ferroelectric polarization switching in organic photochromic salicylaldehyde Schiff base and diarylethene derivatives, differently from the traditional ferroelectrics. However, the study of such intriguing photo-triggered ferroelectrics is still in its infancy and relatively scarce. In this manuscript, we synthesized a pair of new organic single-component fulgide isomers, (E and Z)-3-(1-(4-(tert-butyl)phenyl)ethylidene)-4-(propan-2-ylidene)dihydrofuran-2,5-dione (1E and 1Z). They undergo prominent photochromism from yellow to red. Interestingly, only polar 1E has been proven to be ferroelectric, while the centrosymmetric 1Z does not meet the basic requirement for ferroelectricity. Besides, experimental evidence shows that the Z-form can be converted to the E-form by light irradiation. More importantly, the ferroelectric domains of 1E can be manipulated by light in the absence of an electric field, benefiting from the remarkable photoisomerization. 1E also adopts good fatigue resistance to the photocyclization reaction. As far as we know, this is the first example of organic fulgide ferroelectric reported with photo-triggered ferroelectric polarization response. This work has developed a new system for studying photo-triggered ferroelectrics and would also provide an expected perspective on developing ferroelectrics for optical applications in trap future.

Nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling of arylcarboxylic acid 2-pyridyl esters with alkyl methanesulfonates: access to alkyl aryl ketones

Alkyl aryl ketones were synthesized via a nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling reaction of arylcarboxylic acid (2-pyridyl)esters with primary and secondary alkyl methanesulfonates under mild reaction conditions. This method suits a wide range of substrates and shows good compatibility with functional groups.

Large Piezoelectric Response in a Metal-Free Three-Dimensional Perovskite Ferroelectric

Metal-free perovskites with light weight and eco-friendly processability have received great interest in recent years due to their superior physical features in ferroelectrics, X-ray detection, and optoelectronics. The famous metal-free perovskite ferroelectric MDABCO-NH₄-I₃ (MDABCO = N-methyl-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) has been demonstrated to exhibit excellent ferroelectricity comparable to that of inorganic ceramic ferroelectric BaTiO₃, such as large spontaneous polarization and high Curie temperature (Ye et al. Science 2018, 361, 151). However, piezoelectricity as a vitally important index is far from enough in the metal-free perovskite family. Here, we report the discovery of large piezoelectric response in a new metal-free three-dimensional perovskite ferroelectric NDABCO-NH₄-Br₃ (NDABCO = N-amino-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) by replacing the methyl group of MDABCO with the amino group. Besides the evident ferroelectricity, strikingly, NDABCO-NH₄-Br₃ shows a large d₃₃ of 63 pC/N more than 4 times that of MDABCO-NH₄-I₃ (14 pC/N). The d₃₃ value is also strongly supported by the computational study. To the best of our knowledge, such a large d₃₃ value ranks the highest among the documented organic ferroelectric crystals to date and represents a major breakthrough in metal-free perovskite ferroelectrics. Combined with decent mechanical properties, NDABCO-NH₄-Br₃ is expected to be a competitive candidate for medical, biomechanical, wearable, and body-compatible ferroelectric devices.

[Factors influencing the clinical phenotype of hepatolenticular degeneration]

Hepatolenticular degeneration is an autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by mutations in the ATP7B gene. More than 800 mutations have been identified in the ATP7B gene so far, with significant differences in clinical phenotypes among different mutation sites. Totally different clinical phenotypic mutations can even exist in the same gene. Although copper accumulation due to gene mutation is the basis of the pathogenesis of hepatolenticular degeneration, more and more evidence demonstrates that it is difficult to explain the diversity of clinical manifestations solely from the perspective of gene mutation. Therefore, this article reviews the research progress on the factors influencing genotype, modifier genes, epigenetics, age, gender, diet, and other factors on the phenotype of patients with hepatolenticular degeneration.

Boron-enriched rice-like homologous carbon nanoclusters with a 51.5% photoluminescent quantum yield for highly sensitive determination of endogenous hydroxyl radicals in living cells

Exploring the ultrahigh quantum efficiency of a carbon-based probe via a green and simple technique, and utilisation of its sensing ability for highly bioactive molecule detection is still highly challenging. Herein, we prepared a novel boron-enriched rice-like homologous carbon nanoclusters (BRCNs) with an ultrahigh quantum efficiency of ∼51.5% by introduction of a conjugated structure attached to the CN bond and an electron-withdrawing boron active centre. Unexpectedly, the BRCNs obtained showed a stable dispersion of rice-like carbon nanograins, composed of small carbon dot assembled nanoclusters with an average diameter size of ∼30 nm, and containing boron units of ∼24.68 at%. What's exciting is that the BRCNs obtained exhibited an "on-off-on" three-state emission with the addition of an hydroxyl radical (OH˙) and its antioxidants. Thus, two distinctive fluorescent responses for OH˙ and antioxidants based on the BRCN probe had been developed, and the mechanism has been determined using TEM, XPS, FT-IR, FL, UV-vis spectrophotometry, UPS and fluorescent lifetimes. The OH˙, generated from the Fenton's reagent, preferentially attack the electron-deficient vacancy p orbit of the boron atom in the surface of the BRCNs, which results in the boron atom being easily substituted/attacked by OH˙, and leading to spontaneous aggregation induced quenching (AIQ) due to the existence of a strong intermolecular hydrogen bond between denatured BRCNs. Furthermore, the proposed method was also successfully applied to monitor endogenous OH˙ generation in HeLa cells by confocal imaging, which could be used for elucidating OH˙-induced oxidative damage to biological tissues and proteins.

Constraints on Heavy Decaying Dark Matter from 570 Days of LHAASO Observations

The kilometer square array (KM2A) of the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern γ-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. γ-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as, e.g., high-energy γ rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this Letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after γ/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest γ-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 10^{5} and 10^{9}  GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.

Copper-Catalyzed Reaction of 2,3-Allenols with Silylzinc Reagents: Access to 2-Silyl-1,3-butadienes

Reaction of 2,3-allenols with PhMe₂SiZnCl or Ph₂MeSiZnCl under catalysis of IPrCuCl or SIPrCuCl was carried out, affording 2-silyl-1,3-butadienes. Secondary and tertiary 2,3-allenols could be used as coupling partners. Reaction of secondary 2,3-allenols gave (E)-2-silyl-1,3-butadienes as the only products.

[Value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing in the etiology diagnosis of bacterial meningitis in children]

Objective: To explore the value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the etiology diagnosis of bacterial meningitis in children. Methods: The etiological results of 189 children diagnosed with "bacterial meningitis" or "purulent meningitis" or "central nervous system infection" in the Children's Hospital of Fudan University from 1st January 2019 to 31st December 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. The cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) of the children with bacterial meningitis was detected by culture and mNGS respectively, and the difference of pathogen detection rate between the 2 methods was analyzed. According to the age at the time of visit, the children were divided into neonatal group (≤28 days of age) and non-neonatal group (>28 days of age), and χ² test was used to compare the positive rate between the 2 groups. Taking CFS culture as the gold standard, the sensitivity and specificity of mNGS in the diagnosing of bacterial meningitis in children were analyzed. Results: Among these 189 children with bacterial meningitis, 116 were males and 73 were females. A total of 76 strains of pathogens were detected in blood and (or) CSF cultures, of which 50 strains (65.8%) were Gram-positive bacteria; among those, 18 strains (23.7%) of Streptococcus agalactiae, 17 strains (19.7%) of Escherichia coli and 15 strains (19.7%) of Streptococcus pneumoniae were detected with higher detection rate. The infection rate of Gram-positive bacteria in the non-neonatal group was higher than that in the neonatal group (76.0% (38/50) vs. 50.0% (13/26), χ²=5.24, P=0.020).The same CSF samples of 48 cases were tested by mNGS and culture at the same time, and the detection rate of mNGS was higher than that of CSF culture (20 cases (41.7%) vs. 12 cases (25.0%), χ²=16.45, P<0.001). The consistency of mNGS and culture results was 79.2% (38/48), and the same pathogen was detected in 11 children with both positive mNGS and CSF culture. Taking the results of CSF culture as the gold standard, the sensitivity of mNGS in the diagnosing of bacterial meningitis was 91.7%, and the specificity was 75.0%. Conclusions: The mNGS technology can improve the pathogen detection rate of bacterial meningitis in children, and has a high consistency with CSF culture. In suspected cases where the pathogen cannot be identified by traditional methods, CSF mNGS should be considered timely.

[Role of personalized 3D printing in brain protection after decompressive craniectomy]

Objective: To explore the application value of personalized three-dimensional (3D) printed protective cap in brain protection after decompressive craniectomy (DC). Methods: Fourty-five patients who underwent DC from January 2021 to October 2021 were selected, including 26 males and 19 females, aged 5-73 (50±13) years old. The brain CT data were imported into 3D Slicer software to rebuild the protective cap through 3D printing. The cap was worn on the head of the patient, thereby preventing secondary braindamage. The follow-up results were compared with 53 patients without protective capduring the same period. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in age, skull defect location and follow-up time between the two groups (all P>0.05).Among 45 patients, 47 brain protective caps (2 cases with bilateral skull defects) were successfully designed. The time for image post-processingand 3D printing was (21.2±6.0) min and (62.4±8.3) min, respectively. There were 6 cases of low compliance, 9 cases of moderate compliance, 32 cases of high compliance, respectively. Six cases with low conformity were redesigned and printed, 2 of 9 cases with moderate conformity were redesigned and printed, and the remaining 7 cases reached high compliance after grinding and packaging. In the current study, 45 patients with brain protective caps were followed up for 3 months, and no secondary brain injury occurred. However, among 53 patients without brain protective caps during the same period, 4 patients had secondary accidental brain compression. The incidence of injury was 7.5 %, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). Conclusion: Brain protective cap designed based on cranial CT and 3D printing can be used in patients with skull defects to protect the brain tissue from secondary crush damage and has certain clinical value.

[Status of HVPG clinical application in China in 2021]

Objective: The investigation and research on the application status of Hepatic Venous Pressure Gradient (HVPG) is very important to understand the real situation and future development of this technology in China. Methods: This study comprehensively investigated the basic situation of HVPG technology in China, including hospital distribution, hospital level, annual number of cases, catheters used, average cost, indications and existing problems. Results: According to the survey, there were 70 hospitals in China carrying out HVPG technology in 2021, distributed in 28 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central Government). A total of 4 398 cases of HVPG were performed in all the surveyed hospitals in 2021, of which 2 291 cases (52.1%) were tested by HVPG alone. The average cost of HVPG detection was (5 617.2±2 079.4) yuan. 96.3% of the teams completed HVPG detection with balloon method, and most of the teams used thrombectomy balloon catheter (80.3%). Conclusion: Through this investigation, the status of domestic clinical application of HVPG has been clarified, and it has been confirmed that many domestic medical institutions have mastered this technology, but it still needs to continue to promote and popularize HVPG technology in the future.

[Updates in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of anaphylaxis to neuromuscular blocking agents and their antagonists]

Anaphylaxis to perioperative drugs has an insidious and rapid onset, can be life-threatening, and often results in the suspension of surgery. Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are currently considered to be the most common cause of anaphylactic reactions among anesthetic drugs. With the increasing amount of anesthesia and surgery in the world, there are more and more NMBAs use, and the corresponding allergic risk is also increasing. With the use of NMBAs, their antagonists, such as neostigmine and sugammadex, are often used too, which have more and more allergy reports in clinical practice. Due to the complex mechanism of allergy caused by NMBAs and their antagonists, it is difficult to find out the culprit drug. The cross-reactivity between NMBAs is common, so it is often difficult to choose alternative drugs. This article summarized the epidemiology, pathological mechanisms, diagnostic methods and procedures, immediate treatment, and prevention strategies of anaphylaxis caused by these drugs.

[Clinical application analysis of a method for locating scalp projection of intracranial lesions based on neuroimaging]

Objective: To explore the feasibility of a method based on neuroimaging and surface markers for locating scalp projection of intracranial lesions. Methods: The clinical data of 46 patients who were used 'double-circle method' for locating scalp projection of intracranial lesions at Department of Neurosurgery,the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University from January to June 2021 were retrospective analyzed. All patients with 2 electrodes(artificial fiducials) randomly attached to scalp had been examed thin-layer brain CT. The distances from the center of each fiducial to the root of the nose and tragus were measured through the images. A compass was used to draw two arcs with the root of nose and the tragus as the center and the pre-measured distance as the radius on patient's scalp. Then two arcs' intersection on the scalp was the fiducial. The method was named 'double-circle method'. Two neurosurgeons were arranged to perform fiducial identification with double-circle method, and record the error between the result and the actual fiducial point.Independent sample t test was used for data comparison, and Kappa test was used to analysis the inter-group consistency. Results: Ninety-two fiducial points of 46 patients were collected. Time consuming of doctor A was (8.1±2.3) minutes(range:5 to 15 minutes)and doctor B was (8.9±3.5) minutes(range:4 to 17 minutes).The positioning error from the doctor A was (4.4±2.4)mm(range:0 to 12 mm) and doctor B was(4.2±2.6) mm(range:0 to 14 mm)(t=-0.575,P=0.567),the difference was not statistically significant. The Kappa value of the consistency test of error between two doctors was 0.517(P=0.001).The consistency was moderate.Eight patients used 'double-circle method' and neuronavigation for locating scalp projection of intracranial lesions at the same time. The diameter of the lesions was (3.8±0.9)cm (range: 2.6 to 5.1 cm), and the positioning error of the 'double-circle method' and navigation was (4.0±1.9) mm(range: 1 to 6 mm), and all patients were confirmed to be accurately located during surgery. Conclusion: 'Double-circle method' is a simple,convenient and accurate way in locating intracranial lesions and has certain clinical significance.

One-pot green preparation of deep-ultraviolet and dual-emission carbon nanodots for dual-channel ratiometric determination of polyphenol in tea sample

A novel deep-ultraviolet and dual-emission carbon nanodots (DUCDs)-based dual-channel ratiometric probe was prepared by a one-pot environmental-friendly hydrothermal process using guanidine as the only starting material for sensing polyphenol in tea sample (TPPs). Under the exposure to TPPs, the DUCDs not only provided a characteristic colorimetric response to TPPs, but also displayed TPPs-sensitive ratiometric fluorescence quenching. The detection mechanism was proved to be that enrichment-specific hydroxyl sites (e.g., -NH₂ and -COOH) of DUCDs can specifically react with phenolic hydroxyl groups of TPPs to generate dynamic amide and carboxylate bonds by dehydration and/or condensation reaction. As a result, a new carbon nanomaterial with decrement of surface passivation groups, inherent light-absorbing, and invalid fluorescence emission was generated. The ratio (FL_297nm/FL_395nm) of fluorescence intensity at 297 nm and 395 nm of DUCDs excited at 275 nm decreased with increasing TPPs concentration. The linearity range was 5.0 ng/mL to 100 µg/mL with a detection limit (DL) of 3.5 ± 0.04 ng/mL for TPPs (n = 3, 3σ/k). Colorimetry of DUCDs, best measured as absorbance at 320 nm, was increased linearly in the TPP concentration range 200 ng/mL-200 µg/mL with a DL of 94.7 ± 0.04 ng/mL (n = 3, 3σ/k). The probe was successfully applied to the determination of TPPs in real tea samples, showing potential application prospects in food analysis.

Angular dependence of spin-flop transition in triangular lattice antiferromagnet Cu2(OH)3Br

We report angular dependence of spin-flop transition in triangular lattice antiferromagnet Cu₂(OH)₃Br by angle-dependent magnetization and ESR measurements. The results show that the antiferromagnetic easy magnetization axis is the diagonal direction (θ= 45°) of theac^*plane, i.e., the orientation of Cu1 spins based on the magnetic structure (2020Phys. Rev. Lett.125037204), whereas the spin-flop axis is thebaxis. A phenomenological model is proposed to describe the angle-dependent spin-flop transitions. Based on this model, Cu1 spins are sensitive to external magnetic field, while Cu2 spins are robust against to the field, showing partial decoupling. The model is expected to be used in other uniaxial antiferromagnets with a more general easy axis and complex spin-flop transitions.

Domain memory effect in the organic ferroics

Shape memory alloys have been used extensively in actuators, couplings, medical guide wires, and smart devices, because of their unique shape memory effect and superelasticity triggered by the reversible martensitic phase transformations. For ferroic materials, however, almost no memory effects have been found for their ferroic domains after reversible phase transformations. Here, we present a pair of single-component organic enantiomorphic ferroelectric/ferroelastic crystals, (R)- and (S)-N-3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene-1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine SA-NPh-(R) and SA-NPh-(S). It is notable that not only can their ferroic domain patterns disappear and reappear during reversible thermodynamic phase transformations, but they can also disappear and reappear during reversible light-driven phase transformations induced by enol-keto photoisomerization, both of which are from P1 to P21 polar space groups. Most importantly, the domain patterns are exactly the same in the initial and final states, demonstrating the existence of a memory effect for the ferroic domains in SA-NPh-(R) and SA-NPh-(S). As far as we are aware, the domain memory effect triggered by both thermodynamic and light-driven ferroelectric/ferroelastic phase transformations remains unexplored in ferroic materials. Thermal and optical control of domain memory effect would open up a fresh research field for smart ferroic materials.

[Corrosive sclerosing cholangitis after surgical treatment of hepatic cystic echinococcosis: a case report]

Corrosive sclerosing cholangitis is a rare postoperative complication of hepatic cystic echinococcosis. Although corrosive sclerosing cholangitis is rare, it progresses rapidly and lacks effective treatments, which usually results in a poor prognosis. This case report retrospectively analyzed the treatment and diagnosis of a case with corrosive sclerosing cholangitis following surgical treatment of hepatic cystic echinococcosis, so as to provide insights into the diagnosis and treatment of corrosive sclerosing cholangitis.

The first salicylaldehyde Schiff base organic-inorganic hybrid lead iodide perovskite ferroelectric

A salicylaldehyde Schiff base hybrid lead iodide perovskite [SAPD]PbI₃ (SAPD = 1-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)pyridin-1-ium) was found to show a robust nonlinear optical response and large spontaneous polarization. We expect this work to inspire researchers to investigate the optical control of ferroelectricity in hybrid perovskites.

Exploring Lorentz Invariance Violation from Ultrahigh-Energy γ Rays Observed by LHAASO

Recently, the LHAASO Collaboration published the detection of 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources above 100 TeV, with the highest energy photon reaching 1.4 PeV. The first detection of PeV γ rays from astrophysical sources may provide a very sensitive probe of the effect of the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which results in decay of high-energy γ rays in the superluminal scenario and hence a sharp cutoff of the energy spectrum. Two highest energy sources are studied in this work. No signature of the existence of the LIV is found in their energy spectra, and the lower limits on the LIV energy scale are derived. Our results show that the first-order LIV energy scale should be higher than about 10^{5} times the Planck scale M_{Pl} and that the second-order LIV scale is >10^{-3}M_{Pl}. Both limits improve by at least one order of magnitude the previous results.
