Abstract
Lead is a naturally occurring, bluish-gray metal that is found in small quantities in the earth's crust. The existing literature demonstrates that non-biodegradable character and continuous use results in accumulation of lead concentration in the environment and causes various ill effects such as neurotoxicity, change in psychological and behavioral development of different organisms. Nowadays the most effective technique in the revival of the environment is bioremediation and it is environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Bacterial strains such as Oceanobacillus profundus and Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC4356 have the ability to reduce lead 97% and 73.9%, respectively. Similarly some species of algae and fungal strains also showed lead removal efficiency as 74% (spirulina), 97.1% (Chlorella kessleri), 95.5% (Penicillium janthinillum) and 86% (Aspergillus flavus). Biodegradation of lead by various microbes would be the most efficient and sustainable approach. This review focuses on toxicity, fate of lead in the environment and its microbial degradation.

Abstract
Heavy metals (HMs) are natural elements present in the Earth's crust, characterised by a high atomic mass and a density more than five times higher than water. Despite their origin from natural sources, extensive usage and processing of raw materials and their presence as silent poisons in our daily products and diets have drastically altered their biochemical balance, making them a threat to the environment and human health. Particularly, the food chain polluted with toxic metals represents a crucial route of human exposure. Therefore, the impact of HMs on human health has become a matter of concern because of the severe chronic effects induced by their excessive levels in the human body. Chelation therapy is an approved valid treatment for HM poisoning; however, despite the efficacy demonstrated by chelating agents, various dramatic side effects may occur. Numerous data demonstrate that dietary components and phytoantioxidants play a significant role in preventing or reducing the damage induced by HMs. This review summarises the role of various phytochemicals, plant and herbal extracts or probiotics in promoting human health by mitigating the toxic effects of different HMs.

Abstract
AIM To assess the effectiveness of Lentilactobacillus parafarraginis A6-2 cell lysate for the removal of aluminum (Al), which induces neurotoxicity, and its protective effect at cellular level. METHODS AND RESULTS The cell lysate of the selected L. parafarraginis A6-2 strain demonstrated superior Al removal compared to live or dead cells. The Al removal efficiency of L. parafarraginis A6-2 cell lysate increased with decreasing pH and increasing temperature, primarily through adsorption onto peptidoglycan. Neurotoxicity mitigation potential of L. parafarraginis A6-2 was evaluated using C6 glioma cells. C6 cells exposed with increasing concentration of Al led to elevated toxicity and inflammation, which were gradually alleviated upon treatment with L. parafarraginis A6-2. Moreover, Al-induced oxidative stress in C6 cells showed a concentration-dependent reduction upon treatment with L. parafarraginis A6-2. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that L. parafarraginis A6-2 strain, particularly in its lysate form, exhibited enhanced capability for Al removal. Furthermore, it effectively mitigated Al-induced toxicity, inflammation, and oxidative stress.

Abstract
The presence of cypermethrin in the environment and food poses a significant threat to human health. Lactic acid bacteria have shown promise as effective absorbents for xenobiotics and well behaved in wide range of applications. This study aimed to characterize the biosorption behavior of cypermethrin by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RS60, focusing on cellular components, functional groups, kinetics, and isotherms. Results indicated that RS60 exopolysaccharides played a crucial role removing cypermethrin, with the cell wall and protoplast contributing 71.50% and 30.29% to the overall removal, respectively. Notably, peptidoglycans exhibited a high affinity for cypermethrin binding. The presence of various cellular surface groups including -OH, -NH, -CH3, -CH2, -CH, -P = O, and -CO was responsible for the efficient removal of pollutants. Additionally, the biosorption process demonstrated a good fit with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm. The biosorption of cypermethrin by L. plantarum RS60 involved complex chemical and physical interactions, as well as intraparticle diffusion and film diffusion. RS60 also effectively reduced cypermethrin residues in a fecal fermentation model, highlighting its potential in mitigating cypermethrin exposure in humans and animals. These findings provided valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying cypermethrin biosorption by lactic acid bacteria and supported the advancement of their application in environmental and health-related contexts. Abstract
Bisphenol A (BpA) is an endocrine-disrupting substance commonly found in plastics and resins. It is reported that BpA exposure induces lipid accumulation in humans, similar to obesogenic compounds. The main objective of this study is to investigate the removal of BpA using Lactiplantibacillus sp. D10-2, and to examine its potential for reducing BpA-induced lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cell line model. The heat-dried cells of Lactiplantibacillus sp. D10-2 showed 69.7% removal efficiency for initial BpA concentration of 10 μg/mL, which was 30.5% higher than the live cells. The absence of metabolites or intermediates in BpA removal studies indicates that the Lactiplantibacillus sp. D10-2 strain removed BpA by adsorption process. The hydrophobic interactions of heat-dried Lactiplantibacillus sp. D10-2 cells were observed to be higher with 33.7% compared to live cells (15.0%), suggesting a stronger ability to bind with BpA. Although the BpA binding onto Lactiplantibacillus sp. D10-2 was not affected by pH, it was confirmed that as the temperature increases, the binding ability got decreased due to mass transfer and diffusion of BpA molecules. Treatment with Lactiplantibacillus sp. D10-2 (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1%) reduced lipid accumulation by 61.7, 58.0, 52.7 and 60.4% in 3T3-L1 cells exposed with BpA. In addition, it was confirmed that Lactiplantibacillus sp. D10-2 treatment suppressed the protein expression levels of lipogenesis-related PPARγ and C/EBPα in 3T3-L1 cells. The results of the study suggest that the Lactiplantibacillus sp. D10-2 strain can remove BpA and reduce BpA-accelerated lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells.

Abstract
Lead is a common toxic heavy metal with harmful effects on the human body and is widely used in several industries. It can contaminate the environment by air and water emissions and can enter the human body through the respiratory tract, ingestion, or skin contact. Lead is considered as a persistent environmental pollutant, with a half-life of 30 days in the blood, and exists in the skeletal system for decades and causes damage to other systems. Biosorption is receiving increasing attention. Due to its high efficiency and economic value in removing heavy metals from the environment, a variety of biosorption methods can be used for the removal of heavy metals. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains were capable of attaching to both human skin stratum corneum HaCaT cells and human rectal cancer Caco-2 cells. NBM-04-10-001 and NBM-01-07-003 significantly reduced the secretion of IL-6 and IL-8 after coculture with HaCaT cells. In the immune response of RAW264.7 mouse macrophages, high bacterial counts reduced the concentrations of IL-6 and TNF-α in a dose-dependent manner. The results of animal experiments revealed that feeding lead solution exerted no effect on the animal's food intake, and feeding PURE LAC NBM11 powder could effectively remove lead content in the blood. The group fed with PURE LAC NBM11 powder showed significantly less damage and lesions to liver cells. The LAB powder developed in this study has the potential to bind metals, preventing them from entering the body and protecting the host. LAB can be an ideal strain for future bioadsorption chelators.

Abstract
The food-grade adsorbents of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (108 CFU/mL), Bifidobacterium longum (108 CFU/mL) and chitosan (1%w/v) alone or in combination were used for biosorption of cadmium (Cd) from aqueous solution. Among the tested adsorbents, combination of B. longum and chitosan had the highest efficiency. Therefore, biosorption process with B. longum/chitosan as the most efficient biosorbent was optimized by variables of pH (3-6), temperature (4-37 °C), contact time (5-180 min) and Cd concentrations (0.01-5 mg/L) using RSM. Twenty-seven tests were carried out and the data fitted to the second-order polynomial models. Results revealed that 99.11% of Cd was reduced within 180 min at concentration of 2.5 mg/L, pH 6 and temperature of 20.5 °C that were considered as the optimal conditions for Cd removal. The trend of isotherm was more fitted to the Langmuir model and maximum biosorption capacity was obtained about 3.61 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order fitted the biosorption kinetics for Cd ions. The B. longum/chitosan biosorbent exhibited the high affinity to Cd ion in the presence of coexisting metal ions. It could remove 81.18% of Cd from simulated gastrointestinal tract. Thus, B. longum/chitosan can have good potential as an effective adsorbent for Cd biosorption from aqueous solutions and human body.

Abstract
There are several reports about the effect of gravity removal on some characteristics of microorganisms due to possible change in surface layer thickness and adherence properties. In this study, bioremoval efficiency of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 from water under simulated microgravity conditions was investigated. Furthermore, pretreatment effects (untreated, NaOH, and heat pretreated) of L. acidophilus ATCC 4356 on heavy metal removal was evaluated on microgravity, as our previous research showed impact of pretreatment on adherence properties of probiotics to environmental metals. The results showed that ability of L. acidophilus for arsenic adsorption enhanced following heat-pretreatment in simulated and normal gravity. Moreover, in both conditions of simulated microgravity and normal gravity NaOH-treated L. acidophilus increased the removal of cadmium and lead. In none of the conditions, pretreatment of lactobacillus affects mercury removal. Evaluation of stability of binding of L. acidophilus-heavy metal was investigated to check irreversibility of complex formation between microorganisms and metals in simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Data showed release of heavy metals from complex in normal gravity. Obtained results of this research show the favorable potential of simulated microgravity condition to increase bioremoval capacity of L. acidophilus for heavy metals.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) directly endangers poultry health and indirectly causes harm to human health by food chain. Numerous studies have focused on removing Cd using lactic acid bacteria (LAB). However, there is still a lack of in vivo studies to validate whether Cd can be absorbed successfully by LAB to alleviate Cd toxicity. Here, we aimed to isolated and screened poultry-derived Cd-tolerant LAB with the strongest adsorption capacity in vitro and investigate the protective effect of which on sub-chronic Cd toxicity in chickens. First, nine Cd-tolerant LAB strains were selected preliminarily by isolating, screening, and identifying from poultry farms. Next, four strains with the strongest adsorption capacity were used to explore the influence of different physical and chemical factors on the ability of LAB to adsorb Cd as well as its probiotic properties in terms of acid tolerance, bile salt tolerance, drug resistance, and antibacterial effects. Resultantly, the CLF9-1 strain with the best comprehensive ability was selected for further animal protection test. The Cd-tolerant LAB treatment promoted the growth performance of chickens and reduced the Cd-elevated liver and kidney coefficients. Moreover, Cd-induced liver, kidney, and duodenum injuries were alleviated significantly by high-dose LAB treatment. Furthermore, LAB treatment also increased the elimination of Cd in feces and markedly reduced the Cd buildup in the liver and kidney. In summary, these findings determine that screened Cd-tolerant LAB strain exerts a protective effect on chickens against sub-chronic cadmium poisoning, thus providing an essential guideline for the public health and safety of livestock and poultry.

Abstract
Heavy metals and mycotoxins in foodstuffs are one of the major concerns of our world nowadays. Food decontamination with the help of microbial biomass is a cheap, easy, efficient, and green method known as bioremoval. Probiotics are able to reduce the availability of heavy metals and toxins in food products. The purpose of this review is to summarize the probiotics and potential probiotics' interesting role in food bio-decontamination. After a brief glance at the definition of potential probiotic strains with bioremoval ability, LABs (lactic acid bacteria) are described as they are the most important groups of probiotics. After that, the role of the main probiotic and potential probiotic strains (Bacillus, Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Enterococcus, Bifidobacterium, Pediococcus, Propionibacterium, Streptococcus, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) for heavy metals and mycotoxins bioremoval are described. Additionally, the bioremoval mechanism and the effect of some factors in bioremoval efficiency are explained. Finally, the investigations about probiotic and contaminant stability are mentioned. It is worth mentioning that this review article can be exerted in different food and beverage industries to eliminate the heavy metals and mycotoxins in foodstuffs.

Abstract
Cow's milk is currently the most consumed product worldwide. However, due to various direct and indirect contamination sources, different chemical and microbiological contaminants have been found in cow's milk. This review details the main contaminants found in cow's milk, referring to the sources of contamination and their impact on human health. A comparative approach highlights the poor efficacy and effects of the pasteurization process with other methods used in the treatment of cow's milk. Despite pasteurization and related techniques being the most widely applied to date, they have not demonstrated efficacy in eliminating contaminants. New technologies have appeared as alternative treatments to pasteurization. However, in addition to causing physicochemical changes in the raw material, their efficacy is not total in eliminating chemical contaminants, suggesting the need for new research to find a solution that contributes to improving food safety.

Abstract
Lead (Pb) is a pestilent and relatively nonbiodegradable heavy metal, which causes severe health effects by inducing inflammation and oxidative stress in animal and human tissues. This is because of its significant tolerance and capability to bind Pb (430 mg/L) and thermodynamic fitness to sequester Pb in the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.98421) in vitro. Lactobacillus acidophilus KLDS1.1003 was selected for further in vivo study both in free and maize resistant starch (MRS)–based microencapsulated forms to assess its bioremediation aptitude against chronic Pb lethality using adult female BALB/c mice as a model animal. Orally administered free and microencapsulated KLDS 1.1003 provided significant protection by reducing Pb levels in the blood (127.92 ± 5.220 and 101.47 ± 4.142 µg/L), kidneys (19.86 ± 0.810 and 18.02 ± 0.735 µg/g), and liver (7.27 ± 0.296 and 6.42 ± 0.262 µg/g). MRS-microencapsulated KLDS 1.0344 improved the antioxidant index and inhibited changes in blood and serum enzyme concentrations and relieved the Pb-induced renal and hepatic pathological damages. SEM and EDS microscopy showed that the Pb covered the surfaces of cells and was chiefly bound due to the involvement of the carbon and oxygen elements. Similarly, FTIR showed that the amino, amide, phosphoryl, carboxyl, and hydroxyl functional groups of bacteria and MRS were mainly involved in Pb biosorption. Based on these findings, free and microencapsulated L. acidophilus KLDS 1.0344 could be considered a potential dietetic stratagem in alleviating chronic Pb toxicity.

Abstract
Food contamination such as toxins and heavy metals has been increasing in the last few decades as a result of industrialization in general and as part of food production in particular. Application of microorganisms in toxins and heavy metals bio-removal has been documented and applied as a favorable decontamination approach due to being environmentally friendly, reasonably simple, and economically feasible. Lactobacilli have been proposed and applied as a beneficial biologic sorbent for toxins and heavy metals in processes of reducing their hazardous bio-availability. The purpose of this review is to summarize the known role of Lactobacillus bacterial species in food bio-decontamination processes. After a quick glimpse of the worthy properties of lactobacilli, their cell wall structure is mentioned. Then the potential role of Lactobacillus strains for mycotoxins (aflatoxins, patulin, ochratoxin A, fumonisins, zearalenone, cyanotoxins, and trichothecenes) and heavy metals (lead, arsenic copper, mercury, cadmium, zinc, aluminum, chromium, and iron) bio-removal were described. In addition, the role of various factors in removal yield and the decontamination mechanism were explained. Finally, the lactobacilli-contaminant stability, in vivo studies, and being a friend or foe of Lactobacillus bacteria are discussed.

Abstract
Since heavy metals have been regarded as ubiquitous environmental pollutants, the exploitation of bacterial biosorption has been suggested as an applicable method for being employed for heavy metal depletion. The present study aimed to characterize the function of Lactobacillus paracasei in the presence of Pb (II) and Cd (II). The simultaneous effect of pH, initial metal concentration, and inoculum size demonstrated the Pb (II) removal of 85.77% at the lowest pH, while the inoculum size was enhanced to 45 CFU/100 ml. The maximum Cd (II) removal was obtained at a high level of pH and inoculum size, while the metal concentration was reduced to 30 ppb. The addition of Cd (II) concentration in access led to the 10% drop in Cd (II) removal efficiency attributed to the metal toxicity and pH. Additionally, the slight variation in the amount of inoculum size caused the decreasing trend in the Cd (II) removal. According to the obtained results, the benefit of L. paracasei in the biosorption of heavy metals was well-recognized, which could be suggested as an alternative candidate. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Strain of Lactobacillus paracasei as potential probiotics was tested for biosorption. A successful response surface method was proposed. L. paracasei showed a good efficiency for the lead and cadmium biosorption. Biosorption process was effective in removing low metal level from drinking water. The maximum biosorption was found to be 85.77% for Pb (II) obtained from the experiment.

Abstract
This research experiment was conducted to investigate the potential of Brevundimonas species IITISM22 to remove mercury by using live biomass of bacterial cells at 298, 308, and 318 K. Characterization of bio-sorbent was done by FT-IR and SEM-EDX. The prime functional groups accountable for binding Hg were OH, -NH2, -CH, -SH and -COO. The deformed bacterial structure was seen after Hg adsorption over the bacterial cell. Influences of different experimental factors, such as pH, temperature, contact time, Hg concentration, and biomass dose was examined. IITISM22 exhibited the highest Hg absorption at pH 6.5, contact time of 4 h, and showed an increased adsorption capacity while increasing the concentration of Hg. Kinetics were recommended by pseudo-second-order for adsorption process and isotherm was adequately defined by the Linear Langmuir isotherm model (KL) = 1.4, 1.2, 0.9 mg/l; (RL) = 0.020, 0.015, 0.013, respectively than Freundlich isotherm model. The Activation energy (Ea) of biosorption calculated were (131.10 KJ/mole) by using Arrhenius equation, and the thermodynamic parameters were ΔG⸰ (-41.03, -16.33, -16.12 KJ/mol), ΔH⸰ (-36.87 KJ/mol) and ΔS⸰ (-194.03 J/mol), respectively. These findings suggest that the removal process was based on chemisorption and the biosorption was exothermic. The result of the current experiment indicated that the IITISM22 could be an authentic biosorbent for Hg detoxification.

Abstract
The bioactive compounds like rutin, naringin, and gallic acid have been separated from lemon peel by graphene oxide (GO). The different influences such as pH values and separation conditions were investigated. Moreover, the samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography. The findings of high-performance liquid chromatography revealed that the adsorbed proportion of rutin by GO was more than naringin and gallic acid so that 66.7% of rutin, 34% of naringin, and 19% of gallic acid from the extract were remarkably adsorbed and separated. Besides, adsorption percentage of these materials by GO was considered 74.8% after five cycles of adsorption-desorption process. On the other hand, we carried out batch experiments in order to study the adsorption mechanism of rutin on the GO since rutin was the highest quantity of bioactive substance in lemon peel. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm were the best models for describing adsorption process of rutin by GO. Adsorption capacity of rutin by GO was obtained about 21.08 mgg-1. In addition, the physical adsorption of rutin by GO was confirmed by Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm. This research confirmed that this method for separation of flavonoids is simple and less cost.
