Associations between serum lipid levels and depressive symptom in a Korean older population

Association between chronic diseases and depressive inclinations among rural middle-aged and older adults

This study investigates the association between chronic diseases and depressive inclinations among middle-aged and older adults in rural Northwest China, emphasizing the moderating role of social relationships. Data collected via face-to-face surveys in a cross-sectional design conducted in March 2021, encompassing 395 participants aged 45 and above, were analyzed using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression. The results indicate that, excluding metabolic diseases (such as dyslipidemia and diabetes), other chronic diseases significantly increase depressive inclinations, particularly eye diseases, chronic lung diseases, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and gastrointestinal diseases. Additionally, a greater number of chronic diseases show a positive association with depressive inclinations. Among social relationships, spousal trust and intergenerational relationship satisfaction were associated with a mitigation of the association between chronic diseases and depressive inclinations, whereas skipped generational caregiving exacerbated this association. Other social relationships, including kinship and friendship network size, neighbor relationships, and villager relationships, exhibited no significant moderating associations. These findings underscore the critical role of positive family relationships and robust social support systems in improving the mental health of rural middle-aged and older adults. They provide practical insights for designing targeted policies and interventions to promote healthy aging and mental well-being in resource-limited rural settings.

Association between dyslipidemia and depression: a cross-sectional analysis of NHANES data from 2007 to 2018

BACKGROUND

The relationship between depression and dyslipidemia remains controversial, with inconsistent findings across studies. This study aimed to investigate the association between blood lipid levels and depression using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning from 2007 to 2018.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study included 12,819 adult participants from NHANES. Depression was assessed using a nine-item depression screening instrument. Serum lipid levels, including total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG), were measured using Roche modular P and Roche Cobas 6000 chemistry analyzers. Survey-weighted multiple logistic regression was used to assess the relationships between serum lipid levels and depression.

RESULTS

We observed a statistically significant negative association between HDL levels and depression (odds ratio [OR]: 0.72, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.58-0.90). After adjustments for covariates, HDL-C, TG, and the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index showed significant associations with depression (ORs: 0.66, 1.08, and 1.01, respectively). A linear correlation was observed between HDL-C levels and depression (P < 0.01), while TG levels and the TyG index exhibited nonlinear associations (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively). No significant positive associations were observed between increased TC or LDL-C levels and the risk of depression.

CONCLUSIONS

High HDL-C levels were negatively associated with depression, while TG levels and the TyG index were positively associated with depression. Clinical attention should be given to the detection of lipid levels in patients with depression.

Prevalence and predisposing factors of depressive symptoms in patients with stable coronary artery disease: a cross-sectional single-center study

The incidence of depressive symptoms in patients with stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) has significantly increased. However, its pathogenesis and treatment mechanisms are still incompletely understood. In this study, 144 patients with SCAD were recruited. Depressive symptoms of patients with SCAD were evaluated using Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale during hospitalization, and the patients were categorized into two subgroups: the non-depressive and depressive groups (further divided into mild and moderate/severe depressive groups). The rate of moderate/severe depressive symptoms in patients with SCAD was 18.8%. The mean age of patients in the depressive and mild depressive groups was older than that of those in the non-depressive group, and patients in the moderate/severe depressive group had higher high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and lower creatinine (Cr) levels. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels were significantly associated with increased risks of mild depressive symptoms, whereas higher HDL and lower Cr levels were significantly associated with moderate/severe depressive symptoms, suggesting that patients with SCAD were prone to experience depressive symptoms, especially in the elderly. Abnormality in LDL, HDL, and Cr levels might contribute to the depressive symptoms.

Relationships between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and depressive symptoms: Findings of the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES)

Although serum cholesterol has been associated with late-life depression, few studies on the associations between lipids and depression among middle-aged adults have been performed. This study examined associations between serum lipid levels and depressive symptoms in Korean middle-aged adults. We used data from 8207 participants aged 40-64 years who completed a questionnaire about their experience of depressive symptoms over the last year as part of the 2010-2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Higher HDL-C levels were significantly associated with an elevated risk of depressive symptoms (OR=1.32; 95% CI=1.09-1.60) after adjusting for other covariates.
