Abstract
BACKGROUND Scalp acupuncture is commonly used as a complementary treatment to improve language function in patients with post-stroke aphasia. Our objectives were to evaluate the impact of scalp acupuncture on the cerebral cortex of post-stroke aphasia patients. METHODS This assessor-blinded, parallel-arm design, single-center, randomized clinical trial recruited 64 patients with post-stroke aphasia. They were randomly assigned to either the acupuncture group (n = 32) or the control group (n = 32). The primary outcome measure was the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB) score, while the secondary outcome was the oxygenated haemoglobin (OxyHb) index, which represents cortical activity as measured by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). All assessments were performed at baseline and post-intervention. RESULTS The acupuncture group showed significant improvements in WAB subscales (Spontaneous Speech, Comprehension, Repetition, Naming, and AQ) with all changes statistically significant (P < 0.001). The acupuncture group also showed higher OxyHb indices in the left frontopolar area, left fusiform gyrus, and left pars opercularis (P < 0.05). Additionally, OxyHb D-values were significantly greater in the left frontopolar area and right superior temporal gyrus (P < 0.05) compared to the control group. Among non-global aphasia patients, acupuncture improved comprehension and naming tasks, with lower OxyHb in the right visual association cortex and angular gyrus (P < 0.05). In global aphasia patients, improvements were seen in the AQ and Repetition scores, with higher OxyHb in the right inferior prefrontal gyrus (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Adjuvant scalp acupuncture enhances the effectiveness of speech-language therapy in treating repetition and naming impairments in patients with post-stroke aphasia. Additionally, it may modulate cortical activation in the left frontopolar area, left fusiform gyrus, left pars opercularis, and right superior temporal gyrus, and induces different cortical alteration patterns in global and non-global aphasia.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that the left temporoparietal junction (TPJ) plays a critical role in word reading. Nevertheless, there is still controversy surrounding the phonological and semantic functions of the left TPJ. The parietal unified connectivity-biased computation (PUCC) model posits that the function of the left TPJ depends on both the neurocomputation of this local area and its long-range connectivity. To clarify the specific roles of different TPJ subregions in phonological and semantic processing of Chinese characters, the present study used connectivity-based clustering to identify seven subdivisions within the left TPJ, and conducted comprehensive analyses including functional and structural connectivity, univariate and multivariate analyses (i.e., representational similarity analysis, RSA) on multimodal imaging data (task-state fMRI, resting-state fMRI, and diffusion-weighted imaging [DWI]). Functional and structural connectivity analyses revealed that the left anterior TPJ had stronger connections with the phonological network, while the left posterior TPJ had stronger connections with the semantic network. RSA revealed that the left anterior and posterior TPJ represented phonological and semantic information of Chinese characters, respectively. More importantly, the phonological and semantic representations of the left TPJ were respectively correlated with its functional connectivity to the phonological and semantic networks. Altogether, our results provide a more elaborate perspective on the functional dissociation of the left anterior and posterior TPJ in phonological and semantic processing of Chinese characters, and support the PUCC model.

Abstract
Previous studies have revealed that phonological and semantic processing recruit separate brain networks. However, the intrinsic functional connectivity patterns of the phonological and semantic networks remain unclear. To address this issue, the present study explored the static and dynamic functional connectivity patterns of phonological and semantic networks during the resting state. The static functional connectivity pattern of the two networks was examined by adopting a voxel-based global brain connectivity (GBC) method. In this analysis, we estimated the within-network connectivity (WNC), between-network connectivity between phonological and semantic networks (BNC_PS), and between-network connectivity of the two language networks (i.e., phonological and semantic networks) with the non-language network (BNC_N). The results showed that both phonological and semantic networks exhibited stronger intra-network connectivity (i.e., WNC) than inter-network connectivity (i.e., BNC_PS and BNC_N), indicating that both networks are relatively encapsulated. For dynamic functional connectivity, three distinct dynamic functional states were identified. Specifically, State 1 showed an overall positive connectivity pattern. State 2 exhibited an overall weak connectivity pattern. State 3 showed positive intra-network connectivity and negative inter-network connectivity. These results suggested that phonological and semantic networks exhibited a flexible integration and segregation pattern over time. Taken together, our results revealed that the phonological and semantic networks showed an intra-network integration and inter-network segregation pattern. These findings deepen our understanding of the intrinsic functional connectivity patterns of language networks.

Abstract
Introduction Previous neuroimaging studies on bilingualism revealed that individuals tend to apply their native-language (L1) neural strategies to second language (L2) learning and processing. Nevertheless, it is still unclear how the utilization of the L1 neural strategies affects visual word learning in a new language. Methods To address this question, the present study scanned native Chinese speakers while performing implicit reading tasks before 9-day form-meaning learning in Experiment 1 and before 12-day comprehensive word learning in Experiment 2. To quantify the application of the L1 neural strategies in novel word learning, representational similarity analysis (RSA) was used to compute the neural pattern similarity (PS) between the L1 and artificial language (i.e., cross-language PS) before training. Results Univariate analysis revealed that reading both Chinese words (CWs) and artificial language words (ALWs) elicited activations in a typical reading network. More importantly, RSA revealed that greater pre-training cross-language PS in the left fusiform gyrus was associated with higher learning rate. Discussion These findings directly reveal the facilitating role of the L1 neural strategies in novel word learning and further extend the assimilation hypothesis from the utilization of the L1 neural network in L2 learning to its learning outcomes.

Abstract
The growing trend of bilingual education between Chinese and English has contributed to a rise in the number of early bilingual children, who were exposed to L2 prior to formal language instruction of L1. The L2-L1 transfer effect in an L1-dominant environment has been well established. However, the threshold of L2 proficiency at which such transfer manifests remains unclear. This study investigated the behavioral and neural processes involved when manipulating phonemes in an auditory phonological task to uncover the transfer effect in young bilingual children. Sixty-two first graders from elementary schools in Taiwan were recruited in this study (29 Chinese monolinguals, 33 Chinese-English bilinguals). The brain activity was measured using fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy). Bilingual children showed right lateralization to process Chinese and left lateralization to process English, which supports more on the accommodation effect within the framework of the assimilation-accommodation hypothesis. Also, compared to monolinguals, bilingual children showed more bilateral frontal activation in Chinese, potentially reflecting a mixed influence from L2-L1 transfer effects and increased cognitive load of bilingual exposure. These results elucidate the developmental adjustments in the neural substrates associated with early bilingual exposure in phonological processing, offering valuable insights into the bilingual learning process.

Abstract
The brain networks for the first (L1) and second (L2) languages are dynamically formed in the bilingual brain. This study delves into the neural mechanisms associated with logographic-logographic bilingualism, where both languages employ visually complex and conceptually rich logographic scripts. Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, we examined the brain activity of Chinese-Japanese bilinguals and Japanese-Chinese bilinguals as they engaged in rhyming tasks with Chinese characters and Japanese Kanji. Results showed that Japanese-Chinese bilinguals processed both languages using common brain areas, demonstrating an assimilation pattern, whereas Chinese-Japanese bilinguals recruited additional neural regions in the left lateral prefrontal cortex for processing Japanese Kanji, reflecting their accommodation to the higher phonological complexity of L2. In addition, Japanese speakers relied more on the phonological processing route, while Chinese speakers favored visual form analysis for both languages, indicating differing neural strategy preferences between the 2 bilingual groups. Moreover, multivariate pattern analysis demonstrated that, despite the considerable neural overlap, each bilingual group formed distinguishable neural representations for each language. These findings highlight the brain's capacity for neural adaptability and specificity when processing complex logographic languages, enriching our understanding of the neural underpinnings supporting bilingual language processing.

Abstract
Objectives The acupoint LR3 (Taichong) is frequently utilized in clinical acupuncture. However, its underlying neural mechanisms remain not fully elucidated, with speculations suggesting its close association with specific brain activity patterns. Methods A comprehensive literature search was undertaken across several online databases, such as PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), Wanfang Database, VIP Database, and the Chinese Biomedical Database. Two independent researchers handled the study selection, quality assessment, and data extraction processes. Using the seed-based d-mapping meta-analysis approach, we evaluated the brain regions activated by LR3 acupuncture in healthy subjects. Subsequent subgroup analysis was stratified by fMRI types, and regression analyses were performed considering the duration of acupuncture, depth of needle insertion, and needle diameter. The identified active brain regions were then intricately projected onto large-scale functional networks. Results A total of 10 studies met the criteria for inclusion, encompassing 319 healthy right-handed participants. The meta-analysis indicates that acupuncture at the LR3 activates regions such as the right postcentral gyrus, left thalamus, left middle frontal gyrus, and right superior frontal gyrus. Additionally, meta-regression analysis highlights that increased acupuncture duration correlates with progressively intensified activation of the right superior frontal gyrus. Subgroup analysis posits that variations in the type of fMRI employed might account for heterogeneity in the pooled results. Concurrently, functional network analysis identifies the primary activated regions as aligning with the Basal ganglia network, Auditory network, Left executive control network, Posterior salience network, Right executive control network, and Sensorimotor networks. Conclusion Acupuncture at the LR3 in healthy subjects selectively activates brain regions linked to pain perception, emotional processing, and linguistic functions. Extending the needle retention duration intensifies the activation of the right superior frontal gyrus. These findings enrich our comprehension of the neurobiological underpinnings of acupuncture's role in pain mitigation and emotional regulation.

Abstract
Previous studies have investigated factors related to the degree of cross-language overlap in brain activations in bilinguals/multilinguals. However, it is still unclear whether and how the depth of semantic processing (a critical task-related factor) affects the neural pattern similarity between native and second languages. To address this question, 26 Chinese-English bilinguals were scanned with fMRI while performing a word naming task (i.e., a task with shallow semantic processing) and a semantic judgment task (i.e., a task with deep semantic processing) in both native and second languages. Based on three sets of representational similarity analysis (whole brain, ROI-based, and within-language vs. cross-language semantic representation), we found that select regions in the reading brain network showed higher cross-language pattern similarity and higher cross-language semantic representations during deep semantic processing than during shallow semantic processing. These results suggest that compared to shallow semantic processing, deep semantic processing may lead to greater language-independent processing (i.e., cross-language semantic representation) and cross-language pattern similarity, and provide direct quantitative neuroimaging evidence for cognitive models of bilingual lexical memory.

Abstract
Understanding how the brain functions differently as one learns to read may shed light on the controversial nature of the reading ability of human being. Logographic writing system such as Chinese has been found to rely on specialized neural substrates beyond the reading network of alphabetic languages. The ability to read in Chinese has also been proposed to rely on writing skills. However, it was unclear whether the learning-related alteration of neural responses was language specific or resulted from the more reliance on writing practice during acquisition. This study investigated whether the emergence of typical logographic-specific regions relied on learning by writing. We taught proficient alphabetic language readers Chinese characters and used pre-test and post-test to identify changes in two critical stages of reading, namely, orthographic processing and orthographic-to-phonological mapping. Two typical left hemispheric areas for logographic reading showed increased responses to characters in the brains of proficient alphabetic readers after learning, regardless of whether the learning strategy involved writing practice. Moreover, learning strategy modulated the response magnitude or multivoxel patterns in the left superior parietal lobule, left middle frontal gyrus, and right fusiform gyrus, some of which were task dependent. The findings corroborated a limited role of writing in the emergence of logographic-specific reading network and suggested the heterogeneous nature of different brain regions in this network.
