Theoretical simulation of CO2capture in organic cage impregnated with polyoxometalates

How Does the Redox State of Polyoxovanadates Influence the Collective Behavior in Solution? A Case Study with [I@V18O42] q- ( q = 3, 5, 7, 11, and 13)

A series of stable reduction-oxidation states of the cagelike [I@V^IV _xV^V_{18- x}O₄₂]^{5- x} polyoxovanadate (POV) with x = 8, 10, 12, 16, and 18 were studied with density functional theory and molecular dynamics to gain insight into the structural and electron distribution characteristics of these metal-oxo clusters and to analyze the charge/redox-dependent assemblage processes in water and acetonitrile (MeCN) solutions. The calculations show that the interplay between the POV redox state (molecular charge) and the solvent polarity, countercation size, and hydrophilicity (or hydrophobicity) controls the POV agglomeration phenomena, which substantially differ between aqueous and MeCN media. In MeCN, agglomeration is more pronounced for intermediate-charged POVs, whereas in water, the lowest-charged POVs and organic countercations tend to agglomerate into a microphase. Tests made on wet MeCN show diminished agglomeration with respect to pure MeCN. Simulations with alkali countercations in water show that only the highest-charged POV can form agglomerates. The herein presented theoretical investigation aims to support experimental studies of POVs in the field of functional nanomaterials and surfaces, where controlled molecular deposition from the liquid phase onto solid substrates requires knowledge about the features of these metal-oxo clusters in discrete solutions.

A Noncovalent Binding Strategy to Capture Noble Gases, Hydrogen and Nitrogen

A molecular design strategy to develop receptor systems for the entrapment of noble gases, H₂ and N₂ is described using M06L-D3/6-311++G(d,p)//M06L/6-311++G(d,p) DFT method. These receptors made with two-, three-, four- and five-fluorinated benzene cores, linked with methelene units viz. R_I , R_II , R_III and R_IV as well as the corresponding non-fluorinated hydrocarbons viz. R_IH , R_IIH , R_IIIH and R_IVH show a steady and significant increase in binding energy (E_int ) with increase in the number of aromatic rings in the receptor. A stabilizing "cage effect" is observed in the cyclophane type receptors R_IV and R_IVH which is 26-48% of total E_int for all except the larger sized Kr, Xe and N₂ complexes. E_int of R_IV …He, R_IV …Ne, R_IV …Ar, R_IV …Kr, R_IV …H₂ and R_IV …N₂ is 4.89, 7.03, 6.49, 6.19, 8.57 and 8.17 kcal/mol, respectively which is 5- to9-fold higher than that of hexafluorobenzene. Similarly, compared to benzene, multiple fold increase in E_int is observed for R_IVH receptors with noble gases, H₂ and N₂ . Fluorination of the aromatic core has no significant impact on E_int (∼ ±0.5 kcal/mol) for most of the systems with a notable exception of the cage receptor R_IV for N₂ where fluorination improves E_int by 1.61 kcal/mol. The E_int of the cage receptors may be projected as one of the highest interaction energy ranges reported for noble gases, H₂ and N₂ for a neutral carbon framework. Synthesis of such systems is promising in the study of molecules in confined environment. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Performance of density functionals for modeling vapor liquid equilibria of CO2 and SO2

Vapor liquid equilibria (VLE) and condensed phase properties of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide are calculated using first principles Monte Carlo (FPMC) simulations to assess the performance of several density functionals, notably PBE-D3, BLYP-D3, PBE0-D3, M062X-D3, and rVV10. GGA functionals were used to compute complete vapor liquid coexistence curves (VLCCs) to estimate critical properties, while the hybrid and nonlocal van der Waals functionals were used only for computing density at a single state point due to the high computational cost. Our results show that the BLYP-D3 functional performs well in predicting VLE properties for both molecules when compared with other functionals. In the liquid phase, pair correlation functions reveal that there is not a significant difference in the location of the peak for the first solvation shell while the peak heights are different for different functionals. Overall, the BLYP-D3 functional is a good choice for modeling VLE of acidic gases with significant environmental implications such as CO₂ and SO₂ . © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
