Comparison of Computational Strategies for the Calculation of the Electronic Coupling in Intermolecular Energy and Electron Transport Processes

Electronic couplings in intermolecular electron and energy transfer processes calculated by six different existing computational techniques are compared to nonorthogonal configuration interaction for fragments (NOCI-F) results. The paper addresses the calculation of the electronic coupling in diketopyrrolopyrol, tetracene, 5,5'-difluoroindigo, and benzene-Cl for hole and electron transport, as well as the local exciton and singlet fission coupling. NOCI-F provides a rigorous computational scheme to calculate these couplings, but its computational cost is rather elevated. The here-considered ab initio Frenkel-Davydov (AIFD), Dimer projection (DIPRO), transition dipole moment coupling, Michl-Smith, effective Hamiltonian, and Mulliken-Hush approaches are computationally less demanding, and the comparison with the NOCI-F results shows that the NOCI-F results in the couplings for hole and electron transport are rather accurately predicted by the more approximate schemes but that the NOCI-F exciton transfer and singlet fission couplings are more difficult to reproduce.

Electrocatalytic Reduction of Dinitrogen to Ammonia with Water as Proton and Electron Donor Catalyzed by a Combination of a Tri-ironoxotungstate and an Alkali Metal Cation

The electrification of ammonia synthesis is a key target for its decentralization and lowering impact on atmospheric CO2 concentrations. The lithium metal electrochemical reduction of nitrogen to ammonia using alcohols as proton/electron donors is an important advance, but requires rather negative potentials, and anhydrous conditions. Organometallic electrocatalysts using redox mediators have also been reported. Water as a proton and electron donor has not been demonstrated in these reactions. Here a N2 to NH3 electrocatalytic reduction using an inorganic molecular catalyst, a tri-iron substituted polyoxotungstate, {SiFe3W9}, is presented. The catalyst requires the presence of Li+ or Na+ cations as promoters through their binding to {SiFe3W9}. Experimental NMR, CV and UV-vis measurements, and MD simulations and DFT calculations show that the alkali metal cation enables the decrease of the redox potential of {SiFe3W9} allowing the activation of N2. Controlled potential electrolysis with highly purified 14N2 and 15N2 ruled out formation of NH3 from contaminants. Importantly, using Na+ cations and polyethylene glycol as solvent, the anodic oxidation of water can be used as a proton and electron donor for the formation of NH3. In an undivided cell electrolyzer under 1 bar N2, rates of NH3 formation of 1.15 nmol sec-1 cm-2, faradaic efficiencies of ∼25%, 5.1 equiv of NH3 per equivalent of {SiFe3W9} in 10 h, and a TOF of 64 s-1 were obtained. The future development of suitable high surface area cathodes and well solubilized N2 and the use of H2O as the reducing agent are important keys to the future deployment of an electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis.

Non-orthogonal Configuration Interaction Study on the Effect of Thermal Distortions on the Singlet Fission Process in Photoexcited Pure and B,N-Doped Pentacene Crystals

The present computational work analyzes singlet fission (SF) as a pathway for multiplication of photogenerated excitons in crystalline polyacenes. Our study explores the well-known crystalline pentacene (C22H14) and the prospective and potentially interesting doped B,N-pentacene (BC20NH14). At the molecular level, the singlet fission process involves a pair of neighboring molecules and is based on the coupling between an excited singlet state (S1S0) and two singlet-coupled triplets (1T1T1), which, typically, is influenced by an intermolecular charge transfer state. Taking data from periodic density functional theory and ab initio wave function calculations, we applied the non-orthogonal configuration interaction method to determine electronic coupling parameters. The comparison of the results for both equilibrium structures reveal smaller SF coupling for pentacene than for B,N-pentacene by a factor of ∼5. Introduction of the dynamic behavior to the crystals (vibrations, thermal motion) provides a more realistic picture of the effect of the disorder at the molecular level on the SF efficiency. The coupling values associated to out-of-equilibrium structures show that most of the S1S0/1T1T1 couplings remain virtually constant or slightly increase for pentacene when molecular disorder is introduced. Homologous calculations on B,N-pentacene show a generalized decrease in the coupling values, notably if large phonon displacements are considered. A few of the structures analyzed feature much larger SF coupling if some distortion results in (nearly) degenerate charge transfer and excited singlet and triplet states. For these particular situations, an acceleration of the SF process could occur although in competition with electron-hole separation as an alternative pathway.

Hybrid Molecular Magnets with Lanthanide- and Countercation-Mediated Interfacial Electron Transfer between Phthalocyanine and Polyoxovanadate

A series of {V₁₂}-nuclearity polyoxovanadate cages covalently functionalized with one or sandwiched by two phthalocyaninato (Pc) lanthanide (Ln) moieties via V-O-Ln bonds were prepared and fully characterized for paramagnetic Ln = Sm^III-Er^III and diamagnetic Ln = Lu^III, including Y^III. The LnPc-functionalized {V₁₂O₃₂} cages with fully oxidized vanadium centers in the ground state were isolated as (nBu₄N)₃[HV₁₂O₃₂Cl(LnPc)] and (nBu₄N)₂[HV₁₂O₃₂Cl(LnPc)₂] compounds. As corroborated by a combined experimental (EPR, DC and AC SQUID, laser photolysis transient absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemistry) and computational (DFT, MD, and model Hamiltonian approach) methods, the compounds feature intra- and intermolecular electron transfer that is responsible for a partial reduction at V(3d) centers from V^V to V^IV in the solid state and at high sample concentrations. The effects are generally Ln dependent and are clearly demonstrated for the (nBu₄N)₃[HV₁₂O₃₂Cl(LnPc)] representative with Ln = Lu^III or Dy^III. Intramolecular charge transfer takes place for Ln = Lu^III and occurs from a Pc ligand via the Ln center to the {V₁₂O₃₂} core of the same molecule, whereas for Ln = Dy^III, only intermolecular charge transfer is allowed, which is realized from Pc in one molecule to the {V₁₂O₃₂} core of another molecule usually via the nBu₄N⁺ countercation. For all Ln but Dy^III, two of these phenomena may be present in different proportions. Besides, it is demonstrated that (nBu₄N)₃[HV₁₂O₃₂Cl(DyPc)] is a field-induced single molecule magnet with a maximal relaxation time of the order 10^-3 s. The obtained results open up the way to further exploration and fine-tuning of these three modular molecular nanocomposites regarding tailoring and control of their Ln-dependent charge-separated states (induced by intramolecular transfer) and relaxation dynamics as well as of electron hopping between molecules. This should enable us to realize ultra-sensitive polyoxometalate powered quasi-superconductors, sensors, and data storage/processing materials for quantum technologies and neuromorphic computing.

New phosphotetradecavanadate hybrids: crystal structure, DFT analysis, stability and binding interactions with bio-macromolecules

Two novel bicapped Keggin polyoxidovanadates with organic cations, (C₆H₈N)₅[H₄PV₁₄O₄₂]·5H₂O (1) and (C₆H₁₄N₄)₂(NH₄)[H₄PV₁₄O₄₂]·11H₂O (2), (PV₁₄O₄₂^6- = PV14, C₆H₇N = 3-picoline and C₆H₁₂N₄ = methenamine) were synthesized. These compounds were isolated and characterized in the solid state and in solution by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, FTIR, UV-vis, ⁵¹V, ³¹P, ¹³C and ¹H NMR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Further confirmation of the PV14 structures was obtained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 1 and 2. The Hirshfeld surface analysis was performed to confirm that within the intermolecular interactions occurring in the two crystals, the O⋯H/H⋯O, O⋯O and H⋯H interactions dominate. The protonation and one-electron reduction of the PV14 moiety were also analysed by means of DFT calculations; besides confirming the protonation sites and correctly predicting the pK_a values, the DFT results also indicate that molecular reduction is energetically more favourable in protonated PV14 anions. Upon the addition of PV14 anions to bovine serum albumin (BSA) up to a ratio of 1 : 1, the fluorescence decreased by 45% for both 1 and 2, indicating that the interaction of vanadium-containing species with this protein takes place; log(K_SV) values of ca. 5.5 were obtained in both systems. Upon the addition of 1 or 2 to solutions of calf-thymus DNA (ctDNA), changes were observed in the UV-vis absorption and circular dichroism spectra. The significance of the changes observed is discussed considering the several V-containing species that form in the solution.

Insights from Adsorption and Electron Modification Studies of Polyoxometalates on Surfaces for Molecular Memory Applications

This Account highlights recent experimental and theoretical work focusing on the development of polyoxometalates (POMs) as possible active switching units in what may be called "molecule-based memory cells". Herein, we critically discuss how multiply charged vanadium-containing POMs, which exhibit stable metal-oxo bonds and are characterized by the excellent ability to change their redox states without significant structural distortions of the central polyoxoanion core, can be immobilized best and how they may work optimally at appropriate surfaces. Furthermore, we critically discuss important issues and challenges on the long way toward POM-based nanoelectronics. This Account is divided into four sections shedding light on POM interplay in solution and on surfaces, ion soft-landing of mass-selected POMs on surfaces, electronic modification of POMs on surfaces, and computational modeling of POMs on surfaces. The sections showcase the complex nature of far-reaching POM interactions with the chemical surroundings in solution and the properties of POMs in the macroscopic environment of electrode surfaces. Section 2 describes complex relationships of POMs with their counter-cations, solvent molecules, and water impurities, which have been shown to exhibit a direct impact on the resulting surface morphology, where a concentration-dependent formation of micellar structures can be potentially observed. Section 3 gives insights into the ion soft-landing deposition of mass-selected POMs on electrode surfaces, which emerges as an appealing method because the simultaneous deposition of agglomeration-stimulating counter-cations can be avoided. Section 4 provides details of electronic properties of POMs and their modification by external electronic stimuli toward the development of multiple-state resistive (memristive) switches. Section 5 sheds light on issues of the determination of the electronic structure properties of POMs across their interfaces, which is difficult to address by experiment. The studies summarized in these four sections have employed various X-ray-scattering, microscopy, spectroscopy, and computational techniques for imaging of POM interfaces in solution and on surfaces to determine the adsorption type, agglomeration tendency, distribution, and oxidation state of deposited molecules. The presented research findings and conceptual ideas may assist experimentalists and theoreticians to advance the exploration of POM electrical conductivity as a function of metal redox and spin states and to pave the way for a realization of ("brain-inspired") POM-based memory devices, memristive POM-surface device engineering, and energy efficient nonvolatile data storage and processing technologies.

Tuning Photoinduced Electron Transfer in POM-Bodipy Hybrids by Controlling the Environment: Experiment and Theory

The optical and electrochemical properties of a series of polyoxometalate (POM) oxoclusters decorated with two bodipy (boron-dipyrromethene) light-harvesting units were examined. Evaluated here in this polyanionic donor-acceptor system is the effect of the solvent and associated counterions on the intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer. The results show that both solvents and counterions have a major impact upon the energy of the charge-transfer state by modifying the solvation shell around the POMs. This modification leads to a significantly shorter charge separation time in the case of smaller counterion and slower charge recombination in a less polar solvent. These results were rationalized in terms of Marcus theory and show that solvent and counterion both affect the driving force for photoinduced electron transfer and the reorganization energy. This was corroborated with theoretical investigations combining DFT and molecular dynamics simulations.

Gating the conductance of extended metal atom chains: a computational analysis of Ru3(dpa)4(NCS)2 and [Ru3(npa)4(NCS)2]

The effects of a gate potential on the conductance of two members of the EMAC family, Ru3(dpa)4(NCS)2 and its asymmetric analogue, [Ru3(npa)4(NCS)2]+, are explored with a density functional approach combined with non-equilibrium Green's functions. From a computational perspective, the inclusion of an electrochemical gate potential represents a significant challenge because the periodic treatment of the electrode surface resists the formation of charged species. However, it is possible to mimic the effects of the electrochemical gate by including a very electropositive or electronegative atom in the unit cell that will effectively reduce or oxidize the molecule under study. In this contribution we compare this approach to the more conventional application of a solid-state gate potential, and show that both generate broadly comparable results. For two extended metal atom chain (EMAC) compounds, Ru3(dpa)4(NCS)2 and [Ru3(npa)4(NCS)2], we show that the presence of a gate potential shifts the molecular energy levels in a predictable way relative to the Fermi level, with distinct peaks in the conductance trace emerging as these levels enter the bias window.

Computational study of the staircase molecular conductivity of polyoxovanadates adsorbed on Au(111)

This computational study presents the molecular conduction properties of polyoxovanadates V₆O₁₉ (Lindqvist-type) and V₁₈O₄₂, as possible successors of the materials currently in use in complementary metal–oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology.

How Does the Redox State of Polyoxovanadates Influence the Collective Behavior in Solution? A Case Study with [I@V18O42] q- ( q = 3, 5, 7, 11, and 13)

A series of stable reduction-oxidation states of the cagelike [I@V^IV _xV^V_{18- x}O₄₂]^{5- x} polyoxovanadate (POV) with x = 8, 10, 12, 16, and 18 were studied with density functional theory and molecular dynamics to gain insight into the structural and electron distribution characteristics of these metal-oxo clusters and to analyze the charge/redox-dependent assemblage processes in water and acetonitrile (MeCN) solutions. The calculations show that the interplay between the POV redox state (molecular charge) and the solvent polarity, countercation size, and hydrophilicity (or hydrophobicity) controls the POV agglomeration phenomena, which substantially differ between aqueous and MeCN media. In MeCN, agglomeration is more pronounced for intermediate-charged POVs, whereas in water, the lowest-charged POVs and organic countercations tend to agglomerate into a microphase. Tests made on wet MeCN show diminished agglomeration with respect to pure MeCN. Simulations with alkali countercations in water show that only the highest-charged POV can form agglomerates. The herein presented theoretical investigation aims to support experimental studies of POVs in the field of functional nanomaterials and surfaces, where controlled molecular deposition from the liquid phase onto solid substrates requires knowledge about the features of these metal-oxo clusters in discrete solutions.

Decoding the role of encapsulated ions in the electronic and magnetic properties of mixed-valence polyoxovanadate capsules {X@V22O54} (X = ClO4-, SCN-, VO2F2-): a combined theoretical approach

The electronic structure and magnetism of mixed-valence, host-guest polyoxovanadates {X@VO₅₄} with diamagnetic (X =) ClO₄^- (T_d, 1) and SCN^- (C_∞v, 2) template anions are assessed by means of two theoretical methods: density functional theory and effective Hamiltonian calculations. The results are compared to those obtained for another member of this family with X = VO₂F₂^- (C_2v, 3) (see P. Kozłowski et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2017, 19, 29767-29771), for which complementary data are also acquired. It is demonstrated that the X guest anions strongly influence the electronic and magnetic properties of the system, leading to various valence states of vanadium and modifying V-O-V exchange interactions. Our findings are concordant with and elucidate the available experimental data (see K. Y. Monakhov et al., Chem. - Eur. J., 2015, 21, 2387-2397).

Preparation of Preyssler-type Phosphotungstate with One Central Potassium Cation and Potassium Cation Migration into the Preyssler Molecule to form Di-Potassium-Encapsulated Derivative

A mono-potassium cation-encapsulated Preyssler-type phosphotungstate, [P₅W₃₀O₁₁₀K]^14- (1), was prepared as a potassium salt, K₁₄[P₅W₃₀O₁₁₀K] (1a), by heating mono-bismuth- or mono-calcium-encapsulated Preyssler-type phosphotungstates (K₁₂[P₅W₃₀O₁₁₀Bi(H₂O)] or K₁₃[P₅W₃₀O₁₁₀Ca(H₂O)]) in acetate buffer. Characterization of the potassium salt 1a by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis, ³¹P and ¹⁸³W nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis revealed that one potassium cation is encapsulated in the central cavity of the Preyssler-type phosphotungstate molecule with a formal D _5h symmetry. Density functional theory calculations have confirmed that the potassium cation prefers the central position of the cavity over a side position, in which no water molecules are coordinated to the encapsulated potassium cation. ³¹P NMR and cyclic voltammetry analyses revealed the rapid protonation-deprotonation of the oxygens in the cavity compared to that of other Preyssler-type compounds. Heating of 1a in the solid state afforded a di-K⁺-encapsulated compound, K₁₃[P₅W₃₀O₁₁₀K₂] (2a), indicating that a potassium counter-cation is introduced in one of the side cavities, concomitantly displacing the internal potassium ion from the center to a second side cavity, thus providing a new method to encapsulate an additional cation in Preyssler compounds.

Reconciling the valence state with magnetism in mixed-valent polyoxometalates: the case of a {VO2F2@V22O54} cluster

The electronic structure and magnetism of the recently synthesised mixed-valent {V^VO₂F₂@VO₅₄} (1) host-guest polyoxovanadate envisaged as a potential building block of a molecule-based quantum computer are analysed using density functional theory (DFT) and effective Hamiltonian calculations. The form of the t-J like effective Hamiltonian has been inspired by the acquired DFT data, and the valence state used in DFT calculations has been suggested by the fits to the experimental magnetic data with the effective Hamiltonian. This self-consistent approach breaks through the magnetochemical limitations of vanadium-oxo cluster 1, giving results fully concordant with the experiment and allowing us to determine the valence state of 1, which contrary to other members of this host-guest family appears to feature 9 valence electrons.

Bicapped Keggin polyoxomolybdates: discrete species and experimental and theoretical investigations on the electronic delocalization in a chain compound

Effect of protonation, composition and isomerism on the redox properties and electron (de)localization of classical polyoxometalates

This publication reviews some relevant features related with the redox activity of two inorganic compounds: [XM12O40]q- (Keggin structure) and [X2M18O62]q- (Wells-Dawson structure). These are two well-known specimens of the vast Polyoxometalate (POM) family, which has been the subject of extensive experimental and theoretical research owing to their unmatched properties. In particular, their redox activity focus a great deal of attention from scientists due to their prospective related applications. POMs are habitually seen as ‘electron sponges’ since many of them accept several electrons without losing their chemical identity. This makes them excellent models to study mechanisms of electrochemical nature. Their redox properties depend on: (i) the type and number of transition metal atoms in the structure, (ii) the basicity of the first reduced species and, occasionally, of the fully oxidized species; (iii) the size of the molecule, (iv) the overall negative charge of the POM, and (v) the size of the central heteroatom. In the last years, important collaboration between the experimental and theoretical areas has been usual on the development of POM science. In the present chapter three of these synergies are highlighted: the influence of the internal heteroatom upon the redox potentials of Keggin anions; the dependence of the redox waves of Fe-substituted Wells-Dawson compounds with pH; and the role of electron delocalization and pairing in mixed-metal Mo/W Wells-Dawson compounds in their ability to accept electrons. In these three cases, a complete understanding of the problem would not have been possible without the mutual benefit of experimental and computational data.

Preparation of α1- and α2-isomers of mono-Ru-substituted Dawson-type phosphotungstates with an aqua ligand and comparison of their redox potentials, catalytic activities, and thermal stabilities with Keggin-type derivatives

Both the α1- and the α2-isomers of mono-ruthenium (Ru)-substituted Dawson-type phosphotungstates with terminal aqua ligands, [α1-P2W17O61Ru(III)(H2O)](7-) (α1-RuH2O) and [α2-P2W17O61Ru(III)(H2O)](7-) (α2-RuH2O), were prepared in pure form by cleavage of the Ru-S bond of the corresponding DMSO derivatives, [α1-P2W17O61Ru(DMSO)](8-) (α1-RuDMSO) and [α2-P2W17O61Ru(DMSO)](8-) (α2-RuDMSO), respectively. Redox studies indicated that α1-RuH2O and α2-RuH2O show proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), and the Ru(III)(H2O) species was reversibly reduced to Ru(II)(H2O) species and oxidized to Ru(IV)([double bond, length as m-dash]O) species and further to Ru(V)([double bond, length as m-dash]O) species in aqueous solution depending on the pH. Their redox potentials and thermal stabilities were compared with those of the corresponding α-Keggin-type derivatives ([α-XW11O39Ru(H2O)](n-); X = Si(4+) (n = 5), Ge(4+) (n = 5), or P(5+) (n = 4)). The basic electronic and redox features of Ru(L)-substituted Keggin- and Dawson-type heteropolytungstates (with L = H2O or O(2-)) were analyzed by means of density functional calculations. Similar to the corresponding α-Keggin-type derivatives, both α1-RuH2O and α2-RuH2O show catalytic activity for water oxidation.

On the formation of gold nanoparticles from [AuIIICl4]− and a non-classical reduced polyoxomolybdate as an electron source: a quantum mechanical modelling and experimental study

Supramolecular recognition influences magnetism in [X@HV(IV) 8 V(V) 14 O54 ](6-) self-assemblies with symmetry-breaking guest anions

Mixed-valence polyoxovanadates(IV/V) have emerged as one of the most intricate class of supramolecular all-inorganic host species, able to encapsulate a wide variety of smaller guest templates during their self-assembly formation process. As showcased herein, the incorporation of guests, though governed solely by ultra-weak electrostatic and van der Waals interactions, can cause drastic effects on the electronic and magnetic characteristics of the shell complex of the polyoxovanadate. We address the question of methodology for the magnetochemical analysis of virtually isostructural {V(IV/V) 22 O54 }-type polyoxoanions of D2d symmetry enclosing diamagnetic VO2 F2 (-) (C2v ), SCN(-) (C∞v ), or ClO4 (-) (Td ) template anions. These induce different polarization effects related to differences in their geometric structures, symmetry, ion radii, and valence shells, eventually resulting in a supramolecular modulation of magnetic exchange between the V(3d) electrons that are partly delocalized over the {V22 O54 } shells. We also include the synthesis and characterization of the novel [V(V) O2 F2 @HV(IV) 8 V(V) 14 O54 ](6-) system that comprises the rarely encountered discrete difluorovanadate anion as a quasi-isolated guest species.

A comparative synthetic, magnetic and theoretical study of functional M₄Cl₄ cubane-type Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes

We describe the synthesis, structures, and magnetochemistry of new M4Cl4 cubane-type cobalt(II) and nickel(II) complexes with the formula [M(μ3-Cl)Cl(HL·S)]4 (1: M = Co; 2: M = Ni), where HL·S represents a pyridyl-alcohol-type ligand with a thioether functional group, introduced to allow subsequent binding to Au surfaces. Dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data of 1 and 2 were modeled with a full spin Hamiltonian implemented in the computational framework CONDON 2.0. Although both coordination clusters 1 and 2 are isostructural, with each of their transition metal ions in a pseudo-octahedral coordination environment of four Cl atoms and N,O-donor atoms of one chelating HL·S ligand, the substantially different ligand field effects of Co(II) and Ni(II) results in stark differences in their magnetism. In contrast to compound 1 which exhibits a dominant antiferromagnetic intramolecular coupling (J = -0.14 cm(-1)), 2 is characterised by a ferromagnetic coupling (J = +10.6 cm(-1)) and is considered to be a single-molecule magnet (SMM), a feature of special interest for future surface deposition studies. An analysis based on density functional theory (DFT) was performed to explore possible magnetostructural correlations in these compounds. Using a two-J model Hamiltonian, it revealed that compound 1 has four positive and two (small) negative J(Co···Co) isotropic interactions leading to a S(HS) = 6 ground state. Taking into account the magnetic anisotropy, one would recover a M(S) = 0 ground state since D > 0 from computations. In 2, all the J constants are positive and, in this framework, the zero-field splitting energy characterising the axial anisotropy was estimated to be negative (D = -0.44 cm(-1)). The computational results are consistent with compound 2 being an SMM.

Structure, properties and reactivity of polyoxometalates: a theoretical perspective

In the thematic review dedicated to polyoxometalate (POM) chemistry published in Chemical Reviews in 1998, no contribution was devoted to theory. This is not surprising because computational modelling of molecular metal-oxide clusters was in its infancy at that time. Nowadays, the situation has completely changed and modern computational methods have been successfully applied to study the structure, electronic properties, spectroscopy and reactivity of POM clusters. Indeed, the progress achieved during the past decade has been spectacular and herein we critically review the most important papers to provide the reader with an almost complete perspective of the field.

Rationalization of the behavior of M2(CH3CS2)4I (M = Ni, Pt) chains at room temperature from periodic density functional theory and ab initio cluster calculations

The electrical conductivities and plausible charge-ordering states in the room temperature (r.t.) phase for MMX chains [Ni(2)(dta)(4)I](∞) and [Pt(2)(dta)(4)I](∞) (dta = CH(3)CS(2)(-)) have been analyzed with periodic density functional theory (DFT) and correlated ab initio calculations combined with the effective Hamiltonian theory. Periodic DFT calculations show a more delocalized nature of the ground state in [Pt(2)(dta)(4)I](∞) compared to [Ni(2)(dta)(4)I](∞), which features a rather large energy gap between the occupied and empty bands, and charge polarized dimer units. A larger electrical conductivity for the Pt chain can be expected, especially because the Fermi level lies within a band with contributions from Pt and I orbitals. Electronic structure parameters extracted from ab initio cluster calculations show that the large difference between the observed conductivities at 300 K for Ni and Pt compounds, of 3 orders of magnitude, cannot be explained from the parameters extracted from an embedded M(2)(dta)(4)I(2) dimer fragment alone. When tetramer fragments are considered, we observe that the interdimer transfer integral (t) between neighboring M(2) units connected by an iodine atom at correlated level is comparable in both chains. On the other hand, the energy to transfer an electron from a dimer to the neighboring one (Coulomb repulsion U) is three times larger in the Ni compound with respect to the Pt chain, in line with the poor conductivity of the former. The electronic structure of the M(4)(dta)(8)I(3) fragment points to an alternate charge-polarization state for Ni and an average valence state for Pt when the r.t. X-ray structure is considered.

99Tc and Re incorporated into metal oxide polyoxometalates: oxidation state stability elucidated by electrochemistry and theory

The radioactive element technetium-99 ((99)Tc, half-life = 2.1 × 10(5) years, β(-) of 253 keV), is a major byproduct of (235)U fission in the nuclear fuel cycle. (99)Tc is also found in radioactive waste tanks and in the environment at National Lab sites and fuel reprocessing centers. Separation and storage of the long-lived (99)Tc in an appropriate and stable waste-form is an important issue that needs to be addressed. Considering metal oxide solid-state materials as potential storage matrixes for Tc, we are examining the redox speciation of Tc on the molecular level using polyoxometalates (POMs) as models. In this study we investigate the electrochemistry of Tc complexes of the monovacant Wells-Dawson isomers, α(1)-P(2)W(17)O(61)(10-) (α1) and α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61)(10-) (α2) to identify features of metal oxide materials that can stabilize the immobile Tc(IV) oxidation state accessed from the synthesized Tc(V)O species and to interrogate other possible oxidation states available to Tc within these materials. The experimental results are consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Electrochemistry of K(7-n)H(n)[Tc(V)O(α(1)-P(2)W(17)O(61))] (Tc(V)O-α1), K(7-n)H(n)[Tc(V)O(α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61))] (Tc(V)O-α2) and their rhenium analogues as a function of pH show that the Tc-containing derivatives are always more readily reduced than their Re analogues. Both Tc and Re are reduced more readily in the lacunary α1 site as compared to the α2 site. The DFT calculations elucidate that the highest oxidation state attainable for Re is VII while, under the same electrochemistry conditions, the highest oxidation state for Tc is VI. The M(V)→ M(IV) reduction processes for Tc(V)O-α1 are not pH dependent or only slightly pH dependent suggesting that protonation does not accompany reduction of this species unlike the M(V)O-α2 (M = (99)Tc, Re) and Re(V)O-α1 where M(V/IV) reduction process must occur hand in hand with protonation of the terminal M═O to make the π*(M═O) orbitals accessible to the addition of electrons. This result is consistent with previous extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) data that reveal that the Tc(V) is "pulled" into the -α1 framework and that may facilitate the reduction of Tc(V)O-α1 and stabilize lower Tc oxidation states. This study highlights the inequivalency of the two sites, and their impact on the chemical properties of the Tc substituted in these positions.

Electrochemical behavior of α1/α2-[Fe(H2O)P2W17O61](7-) isomers in solution: experimental and DFT studies

The unusual redox behavior displayed by the two isomers of the Wells-Dawson phosphotungstate anion [Fe(H(2)O)P(2)W(17)O(61)](7-) is presented. The electrochemical measurements have been performed in aqueous media at different pH values from 0.5 up to 8.0. The cyclic voltammetry has also been carried out in organic media to get additional experimental data to establish the effect of the protonation on the redox properties of both isomers. At high pH values (pH ≥ 6) or in an organic medium, the reduction of the Fe center is easier in the case of the alpha-1 isomer, whereas for the alpha-2 isomer such reduction takes place at more negative potentials, as expected. In contrast, at lower pH values (pH ≤ 5), an inversion of this trend is observed, and the reduction of the Fe center becomes easier for the alpha-2 isomer compared to the alpha-1. We were able to highlight the influence of the pH and the pK(a) of the electrolyte on POM-based redox potentials given the pK(a) of the latter. A complementary theoretical study has also been performed to explain the experimental data obtained. In this sense, the results obtained from the DFT study are in good agreement with the experimental data mentioned above and have provided additional information for the electrochemical behavior of both isomers according to their different molecular orbital energies. We have also shown the influence of protonation state of the iron derivative on the relative reduction potentials of both isomers.

Polyoxometalates paneling through {Mo2O2S2} coordination: cation-directed conformations and chemistry of a supramolecular hexameric scaffold

The chemical system based on the [Mo(2)O(2)S(2)(OH(2))(6)](2+) aqua cation (noted L) and the trivacant [AsW(9)O(33)](9-) polyoxometalate (noted POM) has been investigated. Depending upon the ionic strength and the nature of the alkali cations, these complementary components assemble to yield three different architectures derived as hexamer (1), tetramer (2), and dimer (3). This series of clusters displays the same stoichiometry {POM(6)L(9)}(36-), {POM(4)L(6)}(24-), and {POM(2)L(3)}(12-) for 1, 2, and 3, respectively, and their conditions of formation differ mainly by the nature and the concentration of the alkali cation (from Li to Cs). Structural characterizations of 1 reveal a large hexameric supramolecular scaffold (about 25 Å in diameter), which encloses a large internal hole (about 200 Å(3)) filled by water molecules and alkali cations (Na(+) or K(+)). The hexameric scaffold 1 exhibits a rare flexibility property evidenced in the solid state by two distinct conformations, either eclipsed (1a) or staggered-off (1b). Both conformations appear clearly separated by a large twist angle (~40°) and depend mainly on the composition of the internal hole. Structure of anion 2 shows a tetrahedral arrangement where the four POM units and the six connecting {Mo(2)O(2)S(2)} linkers are located at the corners and at the edges, respectively. The structure of anion 3 corresponds to the simplest arrangement, described as a dimeric association of two POM units linked by three {Mo(2)S(2)O(2)} pillars. Stability of the hexameric scaffold has been investigated in solution by (183)W and (39)K NMR and by UV-vis, showing that stability of 1 depends strongly on the proportion of potassium ions, which interfere through host-guest exchange. Density functional methodology (DFT) has been applied to compute the geometries and energies of dimer (3), tetramer (2) and hexamer (1) based on {AsW(9)O(33)} (POM) and {Mo(2)O(2)S(2)} (L) units. Calculations tend to show that internal cations act as "glue" to maintain the POM units connected through the conformationally inward-directed {Mo(2)O(2)S(2)} linkers.

Towards a low-spin configuration in extended metal atom chains. Theoretical study of trimetallic systems with 22 metal electrons

Different electronic configurations of a series of trinuclear heterometallic chains with 22 metallic electrons, MM'M(dpa)(4)X(2) (M = Co, Rh; M' = Ni, Pd; X = Cl, NCS), have been modelled in search of new systems with novel electrical properties. For this purpose, we explore the possibility of obtaining low-spin (extensively closed-shell) states by introducing chemical changes to the reference compound CoPdCo(dpa)(4)Cl(2) (1), isoelectronic to the herein studied systems, but possessing magnetically coupled localized electrons. The discussion is based on the orbital energies obtained by the DFT methodology. Among the systems herein analysed, CoNiCo(dpa)(4)(NCS)(2) has only two unpaired electrons vs. six in the case of 1, its closed-shell configuration appearing at high energies. For Rh(2)M-based chains, changes go a step further and the RhPdRh(dpa)(4)Cl(2) and RhPdRh(dpa)(4)(NCS)(2) molecules present a closed-shell ground state in close competition with the broken symmetry solution with S = ½ on each Rh(II). One-electron reduction of the latter compounds has been computed with marked structural changes. Our calculations show that the two lowest 23-electron states are separated by 7-8 kcal mol(-1) in favour of the state with an unpaired localized electron on the δ(Pd-N)* orbital instead of the delocalized one (σ(nb))(2)(σ*)(1).
