Participation in an existing massive open online course in dentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic

Utilising massive open online courses to enhance global learning dissemination in cleft lip and palate: a case report of penta helix collaboration

BACKGROUND

Educating and raising awareness in cleft lip and palate future generations is one vital effort to ensure the improvement of cleft care and research in the future. This study reported the overview in organising and evaluating the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in Cleft Lip and Palate as the alternative way for students' capacity building outside their study program whilst also earning credits towards their studies.

METHODS

Smile Train cleft charity generously donated recorded lectures from cleft experts around the world in which each of the experts agreed to provide one-hour live discussion sessions. The learning activities ranging from lectures, pre- and post-course evaluation, forum, live discussion sessions, virtual visits to Indonesian Cleft Centre, self-reflection assignments and final project. A survey was released to the participants to collect their feedback.

RESULTS

The course mainly attracted dental students, and several allied health professional students. In total, 414 out of 717 participants registered for this MOOC managed to finish the course and received a certificate of completion which was run between August-October 2021. In general, participants positively received the course.

CONCLUSIONS

The MOOC model and its objective of disseminating widespread information across geographical boundaries to enhance learning about cleft lip and palate treatment was achieved. This report serves as an example for other educational institutions and stakeholders who plan to use online educational engagement platforms to provide high-quality education and capacity building to participants in lower-middle income countries.

Perception of Remote Learning by Fixed Prosthodontic Students at a Romanian Faculty of Dentistry

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the transfer of traditional on-site educational activities to the online environment. This study aimed to evaluate the perception and acceptance of remote learning among fixed prosthodontic students attending the Faculty of Dental Medicine of "Grigore T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iasi, Romania, and to analyze the feedback regarding their experience with the new online methods, the perceived quality thereof and suggestions for improvement. An observational cross-sectional, online study based on 22 questions was conducted with 259 students. The general opinion of online education was good or very good (40.15%); regarding its efficiency, 28.57% found it efficient while 34.36% found it inefficient or very inefficient; regarding the pleasure of learning online, 45.95% of students enjoyed online learning, while 36.64% did not enjoy it. The problem that was most cited by respondents was that of keeping all students motivated and involved (65.6%). Sixty-two percent of the respondents believe that online dental education should not exist, or just to a small extent, a result justified by the practical nature of the profession. The general opinion was that health risks should be managed and mitigated by using a hybrid system that would allow students to do on-site clinical training with direct contact with patients.

Implementation of CAD/CAM program in a nonface-to-face classroom environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate a nonface-to-face crown designing module in a preclinical dental course.

METHODS

Free dental planning software (Blue Sky Plan) was installed on the personal computers of dental college students, and a #46 full veneer crown designing practice was performed individually. An online survey was conducted on the computers' specification and main usage of the students, the practice process, and results. Statistical analysis was conducted to analyze the association between variables, such as "operating system," "central processing unit ," "number of cores," "random-access memory (RAM)," "graphic card," and task performance.

RESULTS

Of the D2 students, 75.4% (52 of 69) responded to the survey. Overall, 96% of the respondents used their computers, and all respondents had no problem running the program. Most of the students marked their level of computer literacy as intermediate and had purchased the computers for the purpose of performing light work. The most common specifications of the computer were Intel i5, quad core, 8 GB RAM, and Windows 10. Students had little experience with computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing before the class. The relationship between computer specifications and task performance was not statistically significant.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, students with intermediate-level computer literacy used computers with less than the recommended specifications of the program; however, they were able to run the program and individually proceed with modules to submit results. Using an individually available crown designing program can provide an opportunity to diversify curricula and broaden students' perspectives even under circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic that limits intimate face-to face classes.

Coronian Education: Perceptions of Educational Changes during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Arab Countries

This article tackles the question: To what domains did education go when it left school buildings due to the coronavirus pandemic? To answer this question, 1184 observations of online activity, 1132 observations of face-to-face activity, 118 focus groups and 1110 individual interviews were undertaken. In addition, 1290 witticisms were collected, utilising humour to inform research. Data analysis reveals the relocation of education to three domains: the domestic, digital and political. Its relocation to the domestic domain has meant increased familial responsibility, fuelling domestic tensions and conflicting with home-based distractions. Its relocation to the digital domain has involved reduced physical interaction, rituality, social merit, mobility and student health. Its relocation to the political domain has given rise to issues of participation and reshaped the power, institutional fabrication and societal support of education. The conclusion introduces the concept of “coronian education”—a hybrid of the domestic, digital and political domains. Whereas pre-coronian education was limited to a single domain, the school, coronian education is fragmented across three domains. Although coronian education research is feasible in the digital and political domains, it is challenging to conduct such research in the domestic domain, as an enquiry into domesticity entails invading the private spaces of homes.

Literature Review on MOOCs on Sensory (Olfactory) Learning

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been described as a “next development of networked learning”, and they have the potential to mediate sensory learning. To understand this phenomenon, the present systematic review examines the research techniques, subjects, and trends of MOOC research on sensory learning, in order to provide a thorough understanding of the MOOC relevant to sensory (olfactory) learning phenomena by evaluating 65 (four studies are about multisensorial learning and 61 are about multisensorial empirical MOOCs researches) empirical MOOC studies published between 2008 and 2021 by searching through databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The results indicated that most studies were based on quantitative research methods followed by mixed research methods and the qualitative research approaches; most of the studies were surveys, followed by platform databases and interviews; almost half of the studies were conducted using at least two methods for data collection: survey and interviews; most were replicated. The most highlighted subjects included student retention, learning experience, social learning, and engagement. Implications and studies into the future have been considered in order to obtain a more evolved understanding of the acquisition of knowledge through the senses.

A meta-analysis of MOOCs-based academic achievement, engagement, motivation, and self-regulation during the COVID-19 pandemic

Massive open online courses (MOOCs)-based education has gained a great popularity especially during this special COVID-19 pandemic time. This study, aiming to summarize the effectiveness of MOOCs, seems meaningful and necessary. Through a meta-analysis using Stata/MP 14.0, this study concludes that MOOCs-based education could significantly improve academic achievements and motivation rather than self-regulation and engagement compared with the non-MOOCs-based approach. Blended, independent, and gamified instead of interactive MOOCs could significantly improve academic achievements compared with their counterparts. Different approaches to MOOCs could not predict academic achievements. Future research into MOOCs-based education could focus on how to blend elements of gamification and interaction, as well as instructional methods, with MOOCs-based education.

Impact of COVID-19 on dental education- a scoping review

BACKGROUND

A new corona virus called COVID-19 and its epidemic has affected health care systems in many ways. There have also been significant changes in dental education. The present study summarizes the findings about dental education resulting from a scoping review of COVID-19 and dentistry.

METHODS

First, a comprehensive search of five databases (Google Scholar, Medline through PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Central) was conducted with the keywords: COVID-19 and its equivalent terms, dentistry, education, oral, students, curriculum, and academics. Articles related to oral health and COVID-19 were searched. Then articles on the subject of dental education were screened and reviewed.

RESULTS

Of the 1389 articles investigating COVID-19 and dentistry, 135 articles were related to dental education and its relationship with COVID-19. The most articles in this field were from the United States, India, and Saudi Arabia. Most of the articles were cross-sectional and then review articles. Based on the review the articles were divided into two main categories of changes and concerns, and opportunities and solutions. Moreover, the following themes were extracted: teaching-learning quality and methods, study career and how students are prepared, infection control policies, theses, exams and assessments, financial and economic security, students and staff's mental health, school's policies and curricula, knowledge of students and staff about COVID-19.

CONCLUSIONS

Dental education now faces big challenges, some of which have never been experienced before. On the other hand, the epidemic has created opportunities for dental education as well. Most of these challenges and opportunities are the same around the world, and the findings of the present study can be a good help to overcome the challenges ahead as well as a good reference to find the right questions to be answered in future studies.

[Virtual education in dentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic]

The changes in university education that appeared within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic posed new challenges throughout the world. In the case of dental education, although the implementation of virtual resources had already been tried, a completely virtual approach was a new challenge. The objective of this article is to discuss virtual education in the dental area within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges it represents. In conclusion, for the continuation of dental education in a virtual modality, the strategies most used by many universities are the academic platforms Moodle and for videoconferencing, Google Meet and Zoom. Likewise, the perception of this new modality, both by teachers and students, was mostly good; however, it is emphasized that these methods cannot replace the need for face-to-face activities for students to develop their capacities as future dentists.

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Academic Activity and Health Status among Romanian Medical Dentistry Students; A Cross-Sectional Study

During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, dental faculties had to rethink their way of teaching and interacting with students and of delivering solid theoretical knowledge and practical skills to students.

BACKGROUND

The purpose of the study was to assess dentistry students' opinions about the online activity, together with a self-evaluation of their mental and physical health, during the first wave of the pandemic.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey. Three hundred and three students, enrolled across all six years of study, were included in the research. Socio-demographic and academic data were collected, along with a self-evaluation of physical and mental status. Some items investigated students' opinions about distance learning and the impact of that online activity on their achievement. The answers were rated using a five-item Likert-like scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS (v.24).

RESULTS

statistical analyses showed that more than 20% of the students strongly agreed with the statement that they felt more anxious and depressed during the first months of the pandemic, and more than 30% were totally satisfied with their relationships with their family members. One-fifth of the respondents declared that they were totally dissatisfied with the relationships with their colleagues and friends. Overall, 50.60% of the students attended the courses/labs in their entirety when they were connected online. Two-thirds of the respondents considered that their practical training was affected due to the online activity, and that not all of the subjects could be taught online. More than half of the respondents agreed that the most objective evaluation method is that of the multiple-choice exams administered at school, and considered that exclusively utilizing online assessments of students encourages unethical behaviors. Age, involvement in online activity, and active participation using video cameras were strongly correlated with satisfaction with academic results.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of the present study showed that online activity was a good alternative for dentistry students during the pandemic restrictions. The positive aspects, together with the negative consequences, of distance learning should also be taken into consideration by university teachers and academic institutions to improve teaching experiences and to ensure a solid professional formation for dentistry students.

Participation in an existing massive open online course in dentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic presented unprecedented challenges and interruptions to education at all levels. As many across the world were required to stay at home, virtual educational resources were developed and relied upon to provide all levels and subjects of instruction. Introduction to Dental Medicine, a massive open online course in dentistry, experienced an increase in enrollment during the start of the pandemic and learners displayed a positive reception to the information provided. Introduction to Dental Medicine was particularly well positioned as a resource during the pandemic given its availability, established nature, and the wide accessibility of course material. As disruptions to normal activities continue, this and other virtual educational methods may continue to play a central role in education and exposure to dentistry.
