The perceptions of dental hygiene students about an asynchronous oral biology course

BACKGROUND

Medical and dental schools have long-established pedagogical approaches to teacher-centred face-to-face learning. The 3-year baccalaureate dental hygiene (DH) program at the University of Alberta, which enrolls 42 students of diverse ages and experiences each year, is no exception. Oral Biology II (OBIOL 302) is an intermediate-level course in the DH program; it was moved to an asynchronous online format to manage the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. This mixed-method study explores the factors affecting the dental hygiene student experience in this online, asynchronous learning environment.

METHODS

This study used a quantitative anonymous survey with a 5-point Likert scale to evaluate the workload and flexibility of the course as well as student acceptance of the assessments. The mean score and standard deviation were calculated for each question in the online survey. A research facilitator conducted interviews using a semi-structured interview guide to further explore student experiences. The qualitative data were then analyzed using a 6-step method of thematic analysis.

RESULTS

The study participants found the format and workload of the online course appropriate and well-suited to the spring term. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data revealed 3 intersecting elements-course structure, communication, and non-curricular aspects-as the key factors shaping student experiences in an online environment.

CONCLUSION

,This study identified the major factors affecting the online learning experience of students from the students' point of view, which will be a useful guide to design more effective online courses for health science education.

[Virtual education in dentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic]

The changes in university education that appeared within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic posed new challenges throughout the world. In the case of dental education, although the implementation of virtual resources had already been tried, a completely virtual approach was a new challenge. The objective of this article is to discuss virtual education in the dental area within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges it represents. In conclusion, for the continuation of dental education in a virtual modality, the strategies most used by many universities are the academic platforms Moodle and for videoconferencing, Google Meet and Zoom. Likewise, the perception of this new modality, both by teachers and students, was mostly good; however, it is emphasized that these methods cannot replace the need for face-to-face activities for students to develop their capacities as future dentists.

Assessing readiness to manage medical emergencies among dental students at four dental schools

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Dentists treat a wide range of patients, including patients with compromised health conditions. While rendering treatment, various medical emergencies can and do occur. To help increase the knowledge required to manage such emergencies, dental students must be trained while in dental school. This study aims to assess the level of medical emergency preparedness and knowledge among dental students at four dental schools.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The participating dental schools were IUSD, Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry, Marquette University School of Dentistry, and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. Groups were designed to include 20 dental students from Years 1 to 4. Students were asked to fill out a survey and were then tested on 10 clinical medical emergency scenarios.

RESULTS

A total of 331 dental students participated in the study. The scores based on 10 case scenarios presented with a range of 4.35-8.02. There was no statistically significant difference in the level of preparedness when dental schools were compared. However, Year 1 and Year 2 dental students had significantly lower total scores than those of Years 3 and 4. The students in Years 1 and 2 demonstrated less confidence in their current knowledge to manage medical emergencies. Satisfaction with the training received ranged from 38% to 84%.

CONCLUSION

The results from this study indicate that students' preparedness to manage medical emergencies at these four dental schools is statistically similar. Additional yearly training could enhance students' preparedness in the management of medical emergencies in the dental setting.

Educating medical students in oral health care: current curriculum and future needs of institutions in Malaysia and Australia

Poor oral health has been associated with compromised general health and quality of life. To promote comprehensive patient management, the role of medical professionals in oral health maintenance is compelling, thus indicating the need for educational preparation in this area of practice. This study aimed to determine the extent of training in oral health in Malaysian and Australian medical schools. An audio-recorded semi-structured phone interview involving Academic Programme Directors in Malaysian (n = 9, response rate=81.8%) and Australian (n = 7, response rate = 35.0%) medical schools was conducted during the 2014/2015 and 2014 academic years, respectively. Qualitative data was analysed via thematic analysis, involving coding and grouping into emerging themes. Quantitative data were measured for frequencies. It was found that medical schools in Malaysia and Australia offered limited teaching of various oral health-related components that were mostly integrated throughout the curriculum, in the absence of structured learning objectives, teaching methodologies and assessment approaches. Barriers to providing oral health education included having insufficient expertise and overloaded curriculum. As medical educators demonstrated support for oral health education, collaboration amongst various stakeholders is integral to developing a well-structured curriculum and practice guidelines on oral health management involving medical professionals.

The teaching of Dental Public Health - 50 years on

In 1966, James published an article in the British Dental Journal (and reprinted here) which made recommendations on the teaching of dental public health. The following commentary reviews the ideas put forward by James and how these relate to concepts of dental public health in the undergraduate dental curricula of 2016 .

Practicum Experiences: Effects on Clinical Self-Confidence of Senior Dental Hygiene Students

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 3-week practicum experience on the clinical self-confidence of University of North Carolina (UNC) senior dental hygiene students.

METHODS

A mixed methods approach was utilized. Before and after a 3-week practicum experience, UNC senior dental hygiene students (n=32) were asked to complete a 20-statement clinical self-confidence survey based on the dental hygiene process of care. Statements were Likert-scaled, ranging from "not at all confident" to "totally confident." The stratified Mantel Haenszel row mean score test with the subject as strata as a repeated approach was used to assess whether on average across subjects, the pre- and post-surveys had the same mean score. Students were also asked to submit reflective journal entries discussing critical incidents during their practicum experience. Representative comments from students' journal entries were selected as qualitative data to support survey results.

RESULTS

Pre- and post-practicum surveys (31 and 32, respectively) were completed, and all 32 students submitted journal entries. The differences in the row mean scores from pre- to post-practicum survey were statistically significant (p<0.05), indicating an overall positive gain in clinical self-confidence from the practicum experience. Students' journal entries provided comments that supported the quantitative results.

CONCLUSION

The results suggest that a 3-week practicum experience in dental hygiene students' final semester increased UNC dental hygiene students' clinical self-confidence in the dental hygiene process of care. Dental hygiene administrators may want to consider the benefits of requiring students to participate in a practicum experience if they do not already do so.
