Abstract
Lichen planus (LP) is a cutaneomucosal chronic inflammatory disease characterized by a CD8+ cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL) infiltrate. In erosive oral LP, we found HPV16-specific activated CTL in lesions, supporting a pathogenic contribution of HPV16. Here, we investigated whether a similar scenario occurs in other clinical forms of LP and in lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA), another chronic disease also affecting the mucosa and/or the skin. Blood CTL from LP and LSA patients expressed significant higher levels of granzyme B, perforin and CD107a proteins than healthy donors. Expansions of TCRVß3+ CTL, with presence of TCR clonotypes identical to those previously detected in erosive oral LP, were found both in blood and mucosal/skin lesions of LP, and not of LSA patients. These expansions were enriched with HPV16-specific CD8+ T-cells as shown by their recognition of the E711-20 immunodominant epitope. In LSA patients, the peripheral repertoire of CTL was oligoclonal for TCRVß6+ CTL. Finally, although patients with LP and LSA have developed antibodies against HPV16 capsid L1, antibodies against HPV16 E6 were only observed in patients with LP. Overall, our data collectively suggest an involvement of HPV16-specific CTL in different clinical forms of LP, not only in erosive oral LP, while a different scenario operates in LSA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This review aimed to evaluate the correlation between viral infections (HPV, EBV, HSV-1, CMV) other than HCV and oral lichen planus to assess if there is sufficient evidence to establish if these viruses can play a role in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed the literature using different search engines (PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library), employing MeSH terms such as "oral lichen planus" and "OLP" in conjunction with other terms. We utilized the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes, and Study design (PICOS) method to define our study eligibility criteria. RESULTS A total of 43 articles of the 1219 results initially screened were included in the study. We allocated the 43 selected items into four groups, according to each related virus: HPV, EBV, HSV-1, and CMV. CONCLUSIONS Heterogeneous results neither confirm nor exclude a direct correlation between the investigated viral infections and oral lichen planus etiopathogenesis and its feasible malignant transformation. Many viral agents can cause oral lesions and act as cancerizing agents. Future studies could be desirable to produce comparable statistical analyses and enhance the quantity and quality of the outcomes to promote the translation of research into clinical practice.

Abstract
Introduction The COVID-19 is a global pandemic that is now responsible for more than 3 million deaths around the world. The oral and dermatological manifestations of COVID-19 are being remarkably reported. This report aims to describe a unique case of oral presentation of erosive lichen planus after COVID-19 infection. Case presentation We present a case of oral lichen planus manifested in the buccal mucosa and the tongue. The lesions were detected one month after COVID-19 infection. Clinical, as well as the histopathological diagnosis, was performed on the oral lesion to confirm oral lichen planus. Clinical discussion Despite viruses being reported as a triggering factor in oral lichen planus, very few cases of oral lichen planus after COVID-19 infection were noticed. The immunological and psychological changes induced by COVID-19 infection may explain the tendency to find lichen planus lesions in COVID-19 patients. Conclusion Our case suggests the possible association between COVID-19 and oral lichen planus. This report highlights the role of health practitioners to be concerned about the probably rising incidence of lichen planus during the COVID-19 pandemic and consider appropriate therapeutic and protective measures against infection. Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid 19) causes pandemics all over the world. Oral and cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19 are emerging every day. Lichen planus is a new pattern of COVID‐19 associated lesion. Identification and diagnosis of lichen planus after COVID-19 need conducting entire clinical and laboratory investigation.

Abstract
The oral cavity and its appendices are exposed to considerable environmental and mechanical stress. Cell junctions play a pivotal role in this context. Among those, gap junctions permit the exchange of compounds between cells, thereby controlling processes such as cell growth and differentiation. Tight junctions restrict paracellular transportation and inhibit movement of integral membrane proteins between the different plasma membrane poles. Adherens junctions attach cells one to another and provide a solid backbone for resisting to mechanistical stress. The integrity of oral mucosa, normal tooth development and saliva secretion depend on the proper function of all these types of cell junctions. Furthermore, deregulation of junctional proteins and/or mutations in their genes can alter tissue functioning and may result in various human disorders, including dental and periodontal problems, salivary gland malfunction, hereditary and infectious diseases as well as tumorigenesis. The present manuscript reviews the role of cell junctions in the (patho)physiology of the oral cavity and its appendices, including salivary glands.

Abstract
Lichen planus (LP) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease that particularly affects the skin and mucous membranes. Its etiology remains elusive, however some trigger factors, including viral or bacterial antigens, drugs and metals, have been postulated. There is a higher prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among patients with LP, with some geographical variations. HCV is an enveloped RNA virus that belongs to the Flaviviridae family and in most instances causes chronic liver infections. It has been hypothesized that HCV may contribute to LP development, but the link between the two disorders is not fully understood. It is still debatable whether HCV leads to the occurrence of LP lesions directly by replication inside the infected cells or indirectly by activating immunological pathways. Molecular studies have revealed HCV RNA in specimens collected from patients with LP. The autoimmune theory was also suggested given that several studies have revealed viral replication and immune response activation associated with autoantibody synthesis. The aim of this review is to summarize the main potential mechanisms involved in the association between LP and HCV infection. Understanding the link between the two disorders may shed some light on the pathogenesis of LP, which is a challenging issue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP) may be related to mental factors. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanism of mental factors in the development of OLP. METHODS The normal control group and OLP patients were tested and evaluated by Zung self-rating anxiety scale and self-rating depression scale. Secondly, Agilent human LncRNA chip technology was used to detect differential genes in the total RNA of the normal control group and OLP patients, and to screen out the differentially expressed genes related to anxiety and depression. Thirdly, we verified the genes at gene level and protein level, respectively. RESULTS Zung self-rating anxiety scale and self-rating depression scale showed that tendency of anxiety and depression in OLP patients is significantly higher than that in normal controls, but there was no significant difference between the erosion form group and the reticular form group; the duration of OLP showed significant negative correlations between degree of anxiety and depression. Microarray analysis showed there were four differential genes (PDE4B, RGS2, SYNGR1, and SYNE1) related to anxiety and depression in OLP patients; real-time qPCR confirmed the expression of PDE4B mRNA was lower in the peripheral blood of normal control group (P < 0.001). The expression of RGS2, SYNGR1, and SYNE1 mRNA was higher in the normal control group (P < 0.05, P < 0.05, P < 0.05). Wes automatic western blot confirmed that the expression of PDE4B protein was lower in the peripheral blood of the normal control group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION PDE4B gene may play a role in the pathogenesis of OLP.

Abstract
Scientific and clinical data indicate that human herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) and, at a lesser extent, human herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2) are factor(s) implicated in the development of erythema multiforme (EM). With a focus on oral EM, the present structured review of proteomic and epitope databases searched for the molecular basis that might link HSV1 and HSV2 infections to EM. It was found that a high number of peptides are shared between the two HSVs and human proteins related to the oral mucosa. Moreover, a great number of the shared peptides are also present in epitopes that have been experimentally validated as immunopositive in the human host. The results suggest the involvement of HSV infections in the induction of oral EM via a mechanism of autoimmune cross-reactivity and, in particular, highlight a potential major role for 180kDa bullous pemphigoid antigen and HSV1 infection in the genesis of crossreactions potentially conducive to EM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lichen planus is a mucocutaneous papulosquamous itchy disease with unknown etiology. A number of factors such as immune mechanisms, viral agents, and drugs have been implicated in pathogenesis of lichen planus. In recent years, several studies have indicated the role of viral agents in this disease, including human herpesvirus-7 (HHV-7). Studies have given contradictory results, which is why we decided to study the possible association between lichen planus with HHV-7. METHODS In this case-control study, which was conducted on 60 cutaneous classic lichen planus samples as well as 60 healthy control skin samples after matching the two groups in terms of gender and age, tissue samples of patients and controls were studied by real time polymerase chain reaction to detect for HHV-7. RESULTS According to this study, HHV-7 DNA was found in 18 samples of the case group (30.0%) and in six (10.0%) of the control group (P = 0.006). CONCLUSION The results of this study support the likely role of HHV-7 in pathogenesis of lichen planus. As an exogenous antigen, this virus may be involved in cellular immune-mediated destruction of keratinocytes.

Abstract
Chronic hepatitis C (HCV) is a common infection affecting 185 million people worldwide. The most common manifestation of chronic HCV is progressive liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. However, several systemic manifestations of HCV have been recognized and reported in the literature. The purpose of this review is to assimilate published literature based on evidence to categorize these extrahepatic manifestations with the likelihood of a causal association with HCV. Exciting recent developments have resulted in simple all oral interferon-free highly effective therapy for HCV. However, this treatment is also expensive and less accessible to most affected individuals as treatment recommendations are based on stage of liver fibrosis. Expanding the scope of HCV therapy to those with extrahepatic manifestations beyond what is currently recommended will significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality in this aging population.

Abstract
This article describes the importance of extrahepatic systemic manifestations of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. While most HCV literature focuses on liver injury and fibrosis progression, a spectrum of systemic disease processes, collectively called C hepatitis-associated systemic manifestations (CHASMs), are present in a high proportion of infected persons. These include thyroid disease (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves disease, and thyroid cancer), cardiovascular disease (atherosclerosis, carotid artery disease, and coronary artery disease), renal disease (MPGN and glomerulosclerosis), eye disease (Mooren's ulcers and sicca syndrome), skin disease (PCT, vasculitis, and lichen planus), lymphomas (NHL and splenic T-cell), and diabetes. Mechanistic understanding of how HCV leads to CHASM processes could lead to development of new interventions. The role of early HCV treatment and cure may result in preventive strategies for a variety of complex disease states. Key Points • Systemic extrahepatic complications of HCV comprise a spectrum of disease states in many organs and systems.• Effective treatment of HCV may reduce or eliminate some but not all of these systemic complications.• Further research into early treatment intervention as a prevention strategy for systemic disease is warranted.
