Abstract
This study evaluated the changes in surface properties of three resin-based restorative materials after two laser-assisted, in-office tooth bleaching protocols using erbium, chromium: yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) or diode (980 nm) lasers. A nanohybrid composite (Enamel Plus HRi), a Bis-GMA-free composite (Enamel Plus HRi Bio Function), and a resin-matrix CAD-CAM ceramic (Shofu Block HC) were tested. Forty specimens for each material were prepared and divided into four groups (n = 10/group). The control specimens did not undergo any bleaching treatment, whereas group 2 received bleaching with 40% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), while groups 3 and 4 underwent the same bleaching procedure with the use of diode (980 nm) or Er,Cr:YSGG lasers, respectively. Surface microhardness and roughness measurements were conducted using a Vickers tester and an optical profilometer. Microhardness was lower in bleached specimens, with the nanohybrid composite exhibiting the largest difference from the no bleaching group. For the Bis-GMA-free composite the microhardness difference between no bleaching and laser-assisted bleaching were smaller than seen for the conventional bleaching technique. Surface roughness was higher in bleached specimens, with nanohybrid composite showing the largest differences from the control specimens. The examined laser-assisted tooth bleaching protocols were found not to impact surface microhardness and roughness of the tested resin-based specimens and they are deemed suitable for clinical use.

Abstract
The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the safety of using blue diode laser (445 nm) for tooth bleaching with regard to intrapulpal temperature increase operating at different average power and time settings. Fifty human mandibular incisors (n = 10) were used for evaluating temperature rise inside the pulp chamber and in the bleaching gel during laser-assisted tooth bleaching. The change in temperature was recorded using K thermocouples for the five experimental groups (without laser, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 W) at each point of time (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 s). As the average power of the diode laser increases, the temperature inside the pulp chamber also increases and that of the bleaching gel was significantly higher in all the experimental groups (p < 0.05). However, the intrapulpal temperature rise was below the threshold for irreversible thermal damage of the pulp (5.6 °C). Average power of a diode laser (445 nm) ranging between 0.5-2 W and irradiation time between 10-60 s should be considered safe regarding the pulp health when a red-colored bleaching gel is used. Clinical studies should confirm the safety and effectiveness of such tooth bleaching treatments. The outcomes of the present study could be a useful guide for dental clinicians, who utilize diode lasers (445 nm) for in-office tooth bleaching treatments in order to select appropriate power parameters and duration of laser irradiation without jeopardizing the safety of the pulp.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate color change of three resin-based restorative materials after two laser-assisted in-office tooth bleaching protocols using Er,Cr:YSGG and diode (980 nm) lasers. MATERIALS AND METHODS A nanohybrid composite resin (EP), a Bis-GMA free composite resin (EPBio) and a resin-matrix CAD-CAM ceramic (HC) were tested. Ninety specimens were prepared and stored in artificial saliva. Group 1 received an in-office bleaching treatment using 40% H2 O2. The same bleaching procedure was assisted by Er,Cr:YSGG laser in Group 2 and by a diode laser (980 nm) in Group 3. Color measurements were performed using a double-beam UV-Vis spectrophotometer at four time intervals (before, 24 h, 15 and 30 days), converted to L*, a*, and b* units of the CIELAB color space and assessed on the basis of 50:50% acceptability (ΔΕab * = 2.7 and ΔΕ00 = 1.77) and 50:50% perceptibility (ΔΕab * = 1.2 and ΔΕ00 = 0.81) thresholds. Three-way ANOVA with repeated measurements was used for statistical analysis of the data. RESULTS Color and whiteness changes did not exceed the established 50:50% acceptability thresholds. EP presented the highest color change after the bleaching followed by EPBio and HC (p ≤ 0.05). Three-way ANOVA revealed that type of material and time interval significantly affected color change (p ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The tested bleaching treatments assisted by Er,Cr:YSGG and diode (980 nm) lasers did not induce unacceptable color and whiteness changes in the resin-based restorative materials. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The tested Er,Cr:YSGG and diode (980 nm) laser-assisted tooth bleaching protocols which may be recommended to accelerate the clinical procedures cannot affect the color of the existing resin-based restorations in case they are accidentally exposed on the bleaching gel and laser irradiation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-vital tooth discoloration is a common condition in dental practice. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the efficacy of intracoronal bleaching treatments of non-vital teeth either activated or not by Er,Cr:YSGG laser (2780 nm) operating at 1.25 or 2.5 W. METHODS Twenty four human canines were artificially stained after implementation of root canal treatment. Subsequently, the teeth were randomly divided into three groups (n = 8): Group 1 (control) received intracoronal bleaching treatment with a bleaching gel containing 35 % hydrogen peroxide for 40 min, Group 2 received the same treatment assisted with Er,Cr:YSGG laser (2780 nm) operating at 1.25 W average power for 30 s and Group 3 received the same treatment with Group 2, but the average power was adjusted to 2.5 W. The bleaching treatments repeated after one week. Spectrophotometric analysis of tooth color change (ΔE) was implemented 7 days after both bleaching sessions. RESULTS The results of two-way ANOVA revealed that there was a tendency of no significant difference in color change between the three experimental groups (p = 0.063). However, the between-group comparisons showed that laser 2.5 W group had significantly higher ΔE than the control group after the first bleaching session. Moreover, a significant interaction between bleaching treatment and number of applications was detected (p = 0.026). CONCLUSIONS Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation significantly increased ΔE only after the first bleaching session when operating at 2.5 W. After the second bleaching session ΔE was not different compared to the control group, irrespectively of the laser power settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of bleaching agents commonly used in micromorphology of the enamel surface and to assess the effect of concentration and of adding fluoride in the bleaching agents. METHODS Sixty freshly extracted intact teeth were stored in distilled water. One half of each tooth was served as control, the other part was treated with bleaching agent. Samples were randomly divided into six groups of ten, according to the bleaching agents: G1- at-home-CP10; G2- at-home-CP16; G3- at-home-CP22; G4- in-office-CP35; G5- in-office-HP40 with fluoride; G6- in-office-HP40 without fluoride. Enamel specimens for each group were then submitted to a quantitative scanning electron microscopy. Number of pores and their diameter were measured to assess porosity of enamel surface. RESULTS SEM analysis revealed enamel surface porosity after bleaching. Significant increase in number and major diameter of pores in bleached samples (p<0.001) were observed. The comparison between samples treated with 10% PC and samples treated with 22% PC showed significant increase in number of pores (p=0.006) and major diameter (p=0.001) from samples treated with 22% PC. Statistical analyses showed significant increase in the number of pores (p=0.006) from samples treated with 40% HP without fluoride compared to samples treated with 40% HP containing fluoride. CONCLUSIONS Bleaching products with low concentration cause less porosity at surface of the enamel compared to concentrated products. Adding fluoride in the bleaching agent appears to reduce porosity of enamel surface.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The appearance of the teeth is of great importance to patients, particularly tooth color. In recent years, tooth whitening has been one of the most popular ways to restore tooth color. Bleaching gels can be affected by heat, light or laser, which can improve its effects. This study intends to examine the effects of two different wavelengths of diode laser (445 & 915 nm) after the bleaching process, on the enamel micro-hardness. METHODS A total of 65 caries-free humans third molars were randomly divided into five groups (N = 13): first group: bleaching gel activated with 915 nm diode laser (1.5 W), second: bleaching gel activated with 915-nm (2.5 W), third: bleaching gel activated with 445-nm (1 W), fourth: bleaching gel activated with 445-nm (1.5 W), fifth (control group): bleaching gel without laser activation. Micro-hardness test (Vickers test) was performed before and after the treatment. The data were submitted to repeated measurement ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS Enamel micro-hardness did not change significantly in groups 3 and 4 but decreased in groups 1 and 2. Group 2 showed the most reduction in micro-hardness. There were no significant changes in the control group. CONCLUSION According to the results of this study, 445 nm Diode laser did not reduce enamel micro-hardness, making it suitable for bleaching treatments. However, more studies are required to consider other factors, such as color changes and pulp temperature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of HP-based products upon dental enamel and dentin are inconclusive. AIM To evaluate changes in micromorphology and composition of calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) in enamel and dentin after the application of 37.5% hydrogen peroxide (HP) and 35% carbamide peroxide (CP) METHODS: Crowns of 20 human teeth were divided in two halves. One half was used as control specimen and the other as experimental specimen. The control specimens were kept in artificial saliva, and the experimental specimens were divided into four groups (n=5 each): group 1 (enamel HP for 45min); group 2 (dentin HP for 45min); group 3 (enamel CP for 90min); and group 4 (dentin CP for 90min). The morphological changes were evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), while the changes in the composition of Ca and P were assessed using environmental scanning electron microscopy combined with a microanalysis system (ESEM+EDX). The results within each group and between groups were compared using the Wilcoxon test and Mann-Whitney U-test, respectively (p<0.05). RESULTS Similar morphological changes in the enamel and no changes in dentin were assessed with both products. Ca and P decreased in enamel and dentin, without significant differences between them or with respect to their control specimens (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS When bleaching products with a neutral pH are used in clinical practice, both, the concentration and the application time should be taken into account in order to avoid possible structural and mineral changes in enamel and dentin.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to evaluate the bleaching effect, morphological changes, and variations in calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) in the enamel with hydrogen peroxide (HP) and carbamide peroxide (CP) after the use of different application regimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four groups of five teeth were randomly assigned, according to the treatment protocol: HP 37.5% applied for 30 or 60 minutes (HP30, HP60), CP 16% applied for 14 or 28 hours (CP14, CP28). Changes in dental color were evaluated, according to the following formula: ΔE = [(La-Lb)2+(aa-ab)2 + (ba-bb)2]1/2. Enamel morphology and Ca and P compositions were evaluated by confocal laser scanning microscope and environmental scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS ΔE HP30 was significantly greater than CP14 (10.37 ± 2.65/8.56 ± 1.40), but not between HP60 and CP28. HP60 shows greater morphological changes than HP30. No morphological changes were observed in the groups treated with CP. The reduction in Ca and P was significantly greater in HP60 than in CP28 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Both formulations improved tooth color; HP produced morphological changes and Ca and P a gradual decrease, while CP produced no morphological changes, and the decrease in mineral component was smaller. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE CP 16% applied during 2 weeks could be equally effective and safer for tooth whitening than to administer two treatment sessions with HP 37.5%.

Abstract
The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of Er,Cr:YSGG laser on the surface roughness and microhardness of various composite restoratives during in-office tooth bleaching. Five highly viscous composite restoratives and three flowable composite restoratives were investigated. Thirty cylindrical specimens of each material were made using Teflon molds. The specimens of each composite were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10). Group 1 specimens did not receive bleaching treatment, group 2 received a conventional in-office bleaching treatment, and group 3 received a laser-assisted in-office bleaching treatment using an Er,Cr:YSGG laser. Two-way ANOVA was used to determine significant interactions between materials and bleaching methods. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test were used to compare the mean surface microhardness and roughness between materials for each treatment group (a = 0.05). Τhere were no significant differences in surface microhardness between the two bleached experimental groups for all the tested composites (p > 0.05). The reduction of surface microhardness after bleaching procedures ranged from 0.72 to 16.93 % for the specimens received conventional treatment and from 1.30 to 11.51 % for those received laser-assisted treatment. Moreover, there were no significant differences in Ra values between the experimental groups (p > 0.05) in all cases. The increase of surface roughness after the bleaching treatments was negligible and was between 0.43 and 4.78 %.
