Abstract
BACKGROUND Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) can lead to significant functional impairments, yet little is understood about the recovery phase and long-term consequences for patients in low- and medium-income countries. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the functional status and identify factors influencing outcomes among patients with GBS in Colombia. METHODS Telephone interviews were conducted with GBS patients enrolled in the Neuroviruses Emerging in the Americas Study between 2016 and 2020. The investigation encompassed access to health services and functional status assessments, utilizing the modified Rankin Scale (mRS), GBS Disability Score (GDS), Barthel Index (BI), and International Classification of Functioning (ICF). Univariate analysis, principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and linear regression were employed to explore factors influencing functional status. RESULTS Forty-five patients (mean age = 50[±22] years) with a median time from diagnosis of 28 months (IQR = 9-34) were included. Notably, 22% and 16% of patients did not receive rehabilitation services during the acute episode and post-discharge, respectively. Most patients demonstrated independence in basic daily activities (median BI = 100, IQR = 77.5-100), improvement in disability as the median mRS at follow-up was lower than at onset (1 [IQR = 0-3] vs. 4.5 [IQR = 4-5], p < 0.001), and most were able to walk without assistance (median GDS = 2, IQR = 0-2). A shorter period from disease onset to interview was associated with worse mRS (p = 0.015) and ICF (p = 0.019). Negative outcomes on GDS and ICF were linked to low socioeconomic status, ICF to the severity of weakness at onset, and BI to an older age. CONCLUSIONS This study underscores that the functional recovery of GBS patients in Colombia is influenced not only by the natural course of the disease but also by socioeconomic factors, emphasizing the crucial role of social determinants of health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the impact of patients' baseline clinical, neurophysiological data, and management plan of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) on long-term quality of life (QoL) and to identify its potential predictors. METHODS Seventy-nine GBS patients were recruited. On admission, participants were evaluated using the Medical Research Council (MRC) sumscore, GBS disability scale (GDS), and Erasmus GBS Respiratory Insufficiency Score (EGRIS). Neurophysiological data were collected, and a management plan was devised. MRC sumscore was repeated at nadir. MRC, GDS and Short Form Survey (SF-36) were assessed at first-year follow-up. RESULTS The mean age was 37.84 ± 17.26 years, with 43 male patients (54.4%). QoL at one year correlated significantly with baseline clinical variables (age, number of days between weakness and admission, MRC sumscore at onset and nadir, high GDS, and EGRIS scores). Antecedent events, especially diarrhoea, neck muscle weakness, autonomic dysfunction, cranial nerve involvement, and mechanical ventilation (MV), associated with worse QoL. Axonal GBS patients had lower QoL than AIDP patients, and PE patients exhibited lower QoL than IVIG patients. Multiple regression analysis showed that older age, diarrhoea, number of days between weakness and admission, neck muscle weakness, cranial nerve involvement, autonomic dysfunction, early MV, and MRC at onset and nadir and high GDS could predict poor QoL. CONCLUSION Older age, more days between weakness and admission, neck muscle weakness, cranial nerve involvement, autonomic dysfunction, early MV, diarrhoea, low MRC at onset and nadir, high GDS at onset, axonal type, and PE treatment were potential predictors of poor QoL in GBS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article summarizes the clinical features, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, pathogenesis, and prognosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), with insights into the current and future diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for this neuromuscular syndrome. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS GBS is an acute, inflammatory, immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy that encompasses many clinical variants and divergent pathogenic mechanisms that lead to axonal, demyelinating, or mixed findings on electrodiagnostic studies. The type of antecedent infection, the development of pathogenic cross-reactive antibodies via molecular mimicry, and the location of the target gangliosides affect the subtype and severity of the illness. The data from the International GBS Outcome Study have highlighted regional variances, provided new and internationally validated prognosis tools that are beneficial for counseling, and introduced a platform for discussion of GBS-related open questions. New research has been undertaken, including research on novel diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers, which may lead to new therapies. ESSENTIAL POINTS GBS is among the most frequent life-threatening neuromuscular emergencies in the world. At least 20% of patients with GBS have a poor prognosis and significant residual deficits despite receiving available treatments. Research is ongoing to further understand the pathogenesis of the disorder, find new biomarkers, and develop more effective and specific treatments.

Abstract
Background Guillain‐Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare inflammatory peripheral nerve disorder with variable recovery. Evidence is lacking on experiences of people with GBS and measurement of these experiences. Objective We aimed to develop and validate an instrument to measure experiences of people with GBS. Design We used a cross‐sectional design and online self‐administered questionnaire survey. Question domains, based on a previous systematic review and qualitative study, covered experiences of GBS, symptom severity at each stage, healthcare and factors supporting or hindering recovery. Descriptive, exploratory factor and reliability analyses and multivariable regression analysis were used to investigate the relationships between variables of interest, explore questionnaire reliability and validity and identify factors predicting recovery. Setting and Participants People with a previous diagnosis of GBS were recruited through a social media advert. Results A total of 291 responders, of different sexes, and marital statuses, were included, with most diagnosed between 2015 and 2019. Factor analysis showed four scales: symptoms, information provided, factors affecting recovery and care received. Positive social interactions, physical activity including physiotherapy and movement, changes made at home and immunoglobulin treatment were important for recovery. Multivariable models showed that immunoglobulin and/or plasma exchange were significant predictors of recovery. Employment and recovery factors (positive interactions, work support and changes at work or home, physical activity and therapy), though associated with recovery, did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion The questionnaire demonstrated good internal reliability of scales and subscales and construct validity for people following GBS. Patient Contribution Patients were involved in developing and piloting the questionnaire.

Abstract
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute autoimmune neuropathy that can cause motor, sensory, and autonomic symptoms. Although GBS primarily is a neuropathic disorder, multiple organ systems can be affected during the disease course, and older patients may be more vulnerable to systemic complications. Close clinical monitoring and early interventions using pharmacologic and nonpharmacological treatments may lead to an improved long-term outcome.

Abstract
Many neuromuscular disorders (NMD) are complicated by respiratory failure. These patients are best managed in a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic to provide timely access to the various disciplines they require. The key mainstay of treatment of respiratory failure in patients with NMD is noninvasive ventilation, supported by secretion clearance, speech and language therapy, optimisation of nutrition and the maintenance of mobility. Patients with specific conditions may also require cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, urology and psychological services. The respiratory NMD multidisciplinary team should also provide access to palliative care, and caregiver health and wellbeing should also be reviewed at clinical reviews. The future of care for the respiratory NMD patient will increasingly involve home services and telehealth and the clinic should be equipped and resourced to deliver these. Although not all health systems will be able to provide all elements of the multidisciplinary team discussed here, this review provides the “ideal” recipe for the adult multidisciplinary team and the evidence base underpinning this from which a clinic can be developed. Care for neuromuscular-related respiratory failure is complex and is best delivered in a multidisciplinary context. Abstract
Background Guillain‐Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare inflammatory disorder affecting the peripheral nerves. Although typically there is full neurological recovery, some people continue to experience residual physical, psychological or social problems longer term. Evidence describing the experiences of people with GBS is limited. Objective We aimed to explore the experiences of people with GBS in the UK. Design We used qualitative (face‐to‐face and telephone) interviews to explore experiences of people with GBS. Audio‐recorded data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using the Framework Method supported by NVivo 11. Setting and Participants We purposively recruited a sample of 16 volunteers with a prior diagnosis of GBS of varying age, sex, ethnicity, location, marital status, time since diagnosis and length of hospital stay to maximize differences in experience. Interviewees were required to have been discharged from hospital, able to give informed consent, able to speak and understand English and currently resident in the United Kingdom. Results The key themes arising from the analysis were as follows: the importance of early diagnosis; the experiences of inpatient care; the importance of active support for recovery; the need for communication throughout the course of the illness; the need for greater awareness, knowledge and provision of information by health‐care staff; and path to achieving function. Conclusion This is the first qualitative study exploring experiences of people with GBS in the UK through their whole illness journey from onset to recovery. The findings contribute to our understanding of the experiences and support needs of people recovering from GBS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this systematic review, we synthesize the current evidence on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for the two of the most relevant outcomes of Zika virus infection in humans, microcephaly and Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). METHODS We searched the following databases: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, LILACS, WHO's ICTRP clinical trials registries database and PROSPERO. Search terms included quality of life, microcephaly, and Guillain-Barré Syndrome. We included primary studies where HRQoL was quantitatively assessed for microcephaly and GBS using validated instruments. We used the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools to assess the risk of bias of individual studies. RESULTS From a total of 1,657 abstracts screened and 66 full texts reviewed, 21 studies met the eligibility criteria; one study for microcephaly and 20 for GBS. Adjusted disutilities for microcephaly compared to a normative childhood utility ranged from -0.745 to -0.820. For GBS, time traded-off the expected lifetime ranged from 16 days to 3 years. HRQoL follows the clinical course of GBS, with lower scores in the first months, recovery within the first year post onset, and stabilization after one year. CONCLUSIONS Included studies reported a wide range of HRQoL for GBS, due in part to a high level of heterogeneity in methods, inclusion criteria, follow-up and reporting of results. Opportunities exist for primary studies assessing the longitudinal HRQoL over the entire course of the diseases to inform clinical practice, economic evaluations and health policy.

Abstract
Longitudinal health-related quality of life (QoL) data in Guillain-Barré (GBS) patients are still scarce. We, therefore, investigated health- related QoL in GBS patients from Serbia and surrounding countries during a six-month follow-up period, and analyzed its association with patients' disability. Our study comprised 74 adult patients diagnosed with GBS from May 2017 until May 2018 in seven tertiary healthcare centers. Health-related QoL was investigated using the SF-36 questionnaire, and compared with functional disability assessed by the GBS disability scale (GDS). Tests were performed at day 14, day 28, month 3 and month 6 from disease onset. GDS and SF-36 scores improved over time (p < 0.01). GDS scores were different at all four time points, while SF-36 did not differ between day 14 and day 28. Pooled SF-36 scores (especially physical ones) correlated with pooled GDS scores, except for Bodily Pain and Role Emotional scores. We found that GDS score at day 14 was an independent predictor of GDS score at month 6 (β = +0.52, p < 0.01), while SF-36 score at day 14 was an independent predictor of SF-36 score at month 6 (β = +0.51, p < 0.01). Neurologists should look not only on disability but also on QoL in GBS patients, since these two measures provide us with important complementary items of information.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an acute disease of the peripheral nerves and their roots. Quality of life (QoL) in the first year after acute episode of GBS is still underresearched area. The aim of our study was to investigate QoL in GBS patients during a 6-month follow-up period. METHODS Multicentric, prospective study included 74 adult patients with GBS (54% males). GBS disability scale (GDS) was used to assess functional disability (severe disability GDS > 2), and Individualized Neuromuscular Quality of Life Questionnaire (INQoL) to asses QoL. Patients were tested on day 14, day 28, month 3, and month 6 from symptom onset. RESULTS Disability as measured by GDS improved during time (P < .01). INQoL scores also improved during time (P < .01) but were not able to differentiate between day 14 and day 28, and some scores also did not make difference between month 3 and 6 (pain, social relations, emotions and total INQoL score; P > .05). Pooled GDS scores correlated with pooled INQoL scores, especially with independence, activities, and weakness subscores (P < .01). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that GDS at day 14 (β = .52, P < .01) and fatigue score at day 14 (β = .41, P < .01) were independent predictors of the worse GDS at month 6 (adjusted R2 = .34, P < .01 for overall model). CONCLUSIONS During a 6-month follow-up period of GBS patients, we observed a gradual recovery of patients' disability and QoL. Our study confirms the importance of patient-reported outcomes and their ability to capture some important issues that are omitted by classic ability measures such as GDS.

Abstract
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a post-infectious autoimmune polyneuropathy. Recent research has highlighted that GBS is associated with the onset of psychiatric symptoms which represent a burden for patients and close relatives. However, acute psychiatric sequelae due to GBS may be misinterpreted as ‘intensive care unit (ICU) delirium’. This review outlines the existing evidence for the psychiatric symptoms associated with GBS with a view to improving psychoeducation of patients. The main psychiatric symptoms of GBS that have been reported in the literature include, stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep abnormalities, visual hallucinations, paranoid delusions, disorientation, terror and psychosis. These psychiatric symptoms, which occur during the acute phase of GBS, if not recognised and treated, may progress to long-term psychiatric problems that interfere with improvement of physical symptoms. A multidisciplinary team approach to the management of GBS may improve both physical and psychiatric recovery.

Abstract
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare, but potentially fatal, immune-mediated disease of the peripheral nerves and nerve roots that is usually triggered by infections. The incidence of GBS can therefore increase during outbreaks of infectious diseases, as was seen during the Zika virus epidemics in 2013 in French Polynesia and 2015 in Latin America. Diagnosis and management of GBS can be complicated as its clinical presentation and disease course are heterogeneous, and no international clinical guidelines are currently available. To support clinicians, especially in the context of an outbreak, we have developed a globally applicable guideline for the diagnosis and management of GBS. The guideline is based on current literature and expert consensus, and has a ten-step structure to facilitate its use in clinical practice. We first provide an introduction to the diagnostic criteria, clinical variants and differential diagnoses of GBS. The ten steps then cover early recognition and diagnosis of GBS, admission to the intensive care unit, treatment indication and selection, monitoring and treatment of disease progression, prediction of clinical course and outcome, and management of complications and sequelae.

Abstract
Background The sensori-motor manifestations of Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS) are usually severe enough to mask the psychiatric and sleep problems which are in need for more attention for better functional outcome. Methods This study was performed on 20 GBS patients and 10 healthy controls. Patients were evaluated initially before immunotherapy using the Overall Disability Sum Score (ODSS), Neuropathy Pain Scale (NPS), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAS), Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and one-night polysomnography (PSG) followed by the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) to evaluate the mean sleep latencies. Reevaluation was done using the same parameters 1 month after completing immunotherapy. Results The study showed significant increase in HAS in GBS patients which were positively correlated with the degree of motor disability. The mean sleep latencies of MSLT were significantly shortened and PSG showed shortening of the total sleep time, sleep efficiency, lowest O2 saturation and pulse transit time with increased wake after sleep onset, sleep stage transition index, apnea hypopnea index, desaturation index, arousal index, snore index and periodic limb movement index. One month after immunotherapy, the anxiety symptoms and sleep abnormalities showed non-significant improvements which were not correlated with the improvements in the sensori-motor manifestations. Conclusions GBS patients usually have sleep and psychiatric abnormalities which may take longer time to improve than the sensori-motor manifestations. So, they need more attention in the management protocol for early patients’ independence and return to usual daily activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No consensus exists which quality of life (QoL) measure should be used in patients with inflammatory neuropathies. Moreover, most QoL measures are ordinal-based scales with their known deficiencies. OBJECTIVES To establish a new disease-specific interval-based QoL questionnaire in inflammatory neuropathies (IN-QoL) using the Rasch model and evaluate its scientific properties (validity, reliability and responsiveness). METHODS 264 patients with inflammatory neuropathies completed six commonly used QoL questionnaires. The obtained data were stacked and subjected to Rasch analysis. Responsiveness was determined by using the concept of minimum clinically important differences related to varying individually obtained SEs (responsiveness definition: MCID-SE≥1.96 after 1-year follow-up compared with baseline). RESULTS The IN-QoL fulfilled all Rasch's model requirements with high internal reliability values (patient separation index of 0.94), except being multidimensional. Additional factor analysis resulted in two (functional and mental) subsets that were unidimensional on their own. The IN-QoL showed good correlation with the EuroQol-health quality visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS) (Spearman's rho 0.72). It demonstrated acceptable responsiveness in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP), as did the EQ-VAS. In patients with monoclonal gammopathy-related neuropathy and multifocal motor neuropathy, hardly any changes were seen over time. CONCLUSION The IN-QoL questionnaire fulfils modern clinimetric requirements and correlates strongly with a patient's self-assessment of their own quality of health, while also showing responsiveness in patients with GBS and CIDP. We propose using the IN-QoL and the EQ-VAS for assessing the QoL of patients with inflammatory neuropathies in future studies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated polyneuropathy most frequently presenting two to four weeks after an acute mild-moderately severe infection as progressive muscular weakness of the lower limbs extending proximally with dysreflexia and autonomic dysfunction. While GBS is typically believed to be isolated to the Peripheral Nervous System, Central Nervous System (CNS) and psychiatric manifestations as a sequela of the disease have been described in different imaging and clinical studies. Many variants of presentation of GBS have been recognized, however a case presenting with primarily psychiatric and autonomic dysfunction preceding muscle weakness has not been cited in the literatures to date. CASE PRESENTATION We describe a 24-year-old previously healthy male presenting with behavioral symptoms including depression, anxiety, and amnesia, and autonomic dysfunction which preceded muscle weakness by two weeks. CNS imaging and blood work results were unremarkable. GBS was confirmed upon cerebral spinal fluid analysis remarkable for an important cytoalbuminologic dissociation and markedly elevated protein concentration. The patient responded well to five cycles of inpatient plasmapheresis and short-term selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment with complete recovery of both neurological and behavioral symptoms. CONCLUSION Though GBS is typically considered a peripheral neuropathy, evidence for CNS involvement exists; GBS should be considered within the differential diagnosis, and neurological features should be monitored, in a patient with new onset unclear psychiatric and CNS symptoms.

Abstract
We conducted a systematic literature review on psychological and behavioral comorbidities in patients with inflammatory neuropathies. In Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS), psychotic symptoms are reported during early stages in 30% of patients. Typical associations include mechanical ventilation, autonomic dysfunction, inability to communicate, and severe weakness. Anxiety and depression are frequent comorbidities. Anxiety may increase post‐hospital admissions and be a predictor of mechanical ventilation. Posttraumatic stress disorder may affect up to 20% of ventilated patients. Sleep disturbances are common in early‐stage GBS, affecting up to 50% of patients. In chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, memory and quality of sleep may be impaired. An independent link between depression and pretreatment upper limb disability and ascites was reported in POEMS (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M‐protein, skin) syndrome, with an association with early death. Hematological treatment of POEMS appears effective on depression. Published literature on psychological/behavioral manifestations in inflammatory neuropathies remains scarce, and further research is needed. Muscle Nerve54: 1–8, 2016

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the clinical evaluation of patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP), scant attention is paid to symptoms such as fatigue, pain and anxiety/depression. We aimed at addressing seminal studies that focused on the burden of these symptoms and their impact on quality of life (QoL) in these conditions. SUMMARY Fatigue, pain, and anxiety/depression are increasingly being recognized in patients with GBS and CIDP, although their pathophysiological provenance remains unknown. Fatigue and pain are significant in terms of prevalence and intensity, may be a presenting symptom, and can persist for years after apparent functional recovery, suggesting residual injury. Anxiety/depression has also been examined although studies are limited. Despite their negative impact on QoL, the long-term dynamics of these symptoms in patients with GBS and particularly CIDP receiving therapy in routine clinical practice have not been systematically evaluated. Such observations formed the basis for the ongoing (GAMEDIS) studies evaluating the effect of Gamunex on fatigue and depression in patients with CIDP, of which some preliminary data are presented. KEY MESSAGES Strength and sensory deficits are the main areas of focus in patients with GBS and CIDP, but they do not explain the total reduction in QoL, suggesting the possible role of other complaints. A more comprehensive approach to patient care demands that factors such as pain, fatigue and anxiety/depression receive greater attention. The non-interventional GAMEDIS studies are expected to provide valuable insight into the long-term effectiveness of Gamunex in everyday practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish the incidence and clinical course of Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS) in a well-defined geographical area. PATIENTS AND METHODS All patients older than 16 years of age diagnosed with GBS were prospectively invited to join a follow-up study for two years. RESULTS Seventeen patients were diagnosed with GBS; an incidence rate of 2.28/100,000 in 2006/2007, and 3.19/100,000 in 2007/2008 with an equal gender distribution. Eleven patients accepted follow up, and more than 50% had milder forms of GBS with preserved walking ability and a Hughes score ≤ 2. None required assisted ventilation in this period, and only one patient had a MRC score <40. Three patients were simultaneously diagnosed with SIADH. Nine patients received IvIg treatment and clinical improvement measured by MRC and INCAT was seen during the first three months, but the patients subjective perceptions of health and symptoms measured using VAS, FSS, and SF-36 were reduced the first 12 months after diagnosis. CONCLUSION Incidence of GBS in a well-defined area varied between 2.28-3.19/100 000, and more than 50% of patients were mildly affected. Despite a good clinical recovery after three months and subsequent improvement on self-assessed health items, patients with GBS rated their health lower than expected after one year.

Background Inflammatory neuropathies such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy and paraproteinaemic demyelinating neuropathy are a heterogenous group of peripheral nerve disorders that affect around one to two people per 100,000. Whilst treatments such as intravenous immunoglobulin, plasma exchange and corticosteroids have generally positive results, long-term residual symptoms and associated activity limitations are common. There is currently no standardised care for patients with ongoing activity limitation and participation restriction as a result of inflammatory neuropathy IN but data from observational studies and a randomised controlled trial suggest that exercise either alone or as part of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme may be beneficial in improving activity limitation. Tailoring the intervention for participants following physiotherapy assessment and incorporating patient preference for type and location of exercise may be important. Methods/Design The current study is a pragmatic, prospective, parallel observer-blind, randomised controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of a twelve week tailored home exercise programme versus advice and usual care. Seventy adults with stable immune mediated inflammatory neuropathy IN will be recruited to the study from two main sources: patients attending selected specialist peripheral nerve clinics in the South East and West Midlands of England and people with who access the GAIN charity website or newsletter. Participants will be randomised to receive either advice about exercise and usual care or a 12 week tailored home exercise programme. The primary outcome of activity limitation and secondary outcomes of fatigue, quality of life, self-efficacy, illness beliefs, mood and physical activity will be assessed via self-report questionnaire at baseline, 12 weeks and 12 months post intervention. Cost effectiveness and cost utility will be assessed via interview at baseline and 12 months post intervention. Intention to treat analysis will be our primary model for efficacy analysis. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with a selected sample of participants in order to explore the acceptability of the intervention and factors affecting adherence to the exercise programme. Discussion This is the first randomised controlled trial to compare the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of tailored home exercise with advice about exercise and usual care for adults with inflammatory neuropathy. Abstract
Purpose: The aim was to describe experiences of disability in everyday life and managing the recovery process two years after falling ill with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Design: Qualitative interview study. Methods: Interviews were conducted with 35 persons (22 male, mean age 50 years) two years after the onset of Guillain-Barré syndrome. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using content analysis. Results: The analysis revealed four categories and an overall theme: ‘Striving for balance in everyday life’. The participants described persistent lived body restrictions that affected their arms, legs, and face. Bodily symptoms and loss of energy limited or restricted many everyday activities. In connection with healthcare, both satisfaction and feeling vulnerable in a critical situation were described. Experiences of the recovery process varied. The participants described acceptance and reappraisal of a new life situation despite their limitations, and having gained the knowledge that life can change suddenly. However, they also expressed disappointment following an overly positive prognosis in the early stages, and over a continuous wait for recovery. For some participants life had returned to as before. Conclusion: The participants experienced limitations in everyday life and decreased functioning in several parts of the body. The recovery process may still be ongoing two years after onset. Rehabilitation intervention with an extended focus on supporting individualized coping processes could facilitate ways to live with persistent disability.
