The dyadic interaction model of relationship quality and the impact of attachment orientation and empathy on infertile couples in China

Type D personality, and quality of life in couples undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment:the role of dyadic coping

There is limited research on the relationship between type D personality, dyadic coping, and quality of life (QoL), with most studies focusing on the individual perspective rather than the dyadic perspective. Additionally, evidence for the systemic-transaction model (STM) is limited, and research on infertile couples is scarce. This study investigated the relationship between type D personality and QoL in couples with infertility through the mediation of dyadic coping mechanisms. The present descriptive cross-sectional study recruited 452 infertile couples (N = 904) receiving in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment from a tertiary hospital in Hefei, China, between January and May of 2022. Information on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, type D personality, dyadic coping, and the QoL of the dyads was collected. The dyadic data were examined using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Model approach (APIMeM). The results suggest that type D personality, dyadic coping, and QoL in infertile couples have Actor-Partner Interdependence effects. The negative impact of Type D personality can spill over from individuals to the dyadic domain of couples. In the later stage, the negative impact of type D personality on QoL can be reduced by enhancing the dyadic coping level of both members of the infertile couple.

Implications of perceived empathy from spouses during pregnancy for health-related quality of life among pregnant women: a cross-sectional study in Anhui, China

BACKGROUND

Empathy is a critical component of nursing care, impacting both nurses' and patients' outcomes. However, perceived empathy from spouses during pregnancy and its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are unclear. This study aimed to examine pregnant women's perceived empathy from their spouses and assess the relation of perceived empathy on HRQoL.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study, performed in the obstetric clinics or wards of four well-known hospitals in Anhui Province, China, included 349 pregnant women in the second or third trimester; participants were recruited by convenience sampling and enrolled from October to December 2021. A general information questionnaire, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), a purpose-designed empathy questionnaire and the Medical Outcomes Study 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12) were used to evaluate the pregnant women's general information, perceptions of empathy and HRQoL. Data were analysed using SPSS 22 at a threshold of P < 0.05. Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, Student's t test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were used for analysis.

RESULTS

The pregnant women's total empathy, physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores were 41.6 ± 9.0, 41.6 ± 7.6, and 47.7 ± 9.1, respectively. Correlation analysis revealed that the purpose-designed empathy questionnaire items were significantly positively correlated with perspective taking and empathic concern but were not correlated with the personal distress dimension and were only partially correlated with the fantasy dimension. Maternal physical condition during pregnancy, planned pregnancy, and occupational stress were predictors of the PCS score (β = 0.281, P < 0.01; β = 0.132, P = 0.02; β = -0.128, P = 0.02). The behavioural empathy item of our purpose-designed empathy questionnaire and empathic concern were important predictors of the MCS score (β = 0.127, P = 0.02; β = 0.158, P < 0.01), as well as other demographic and obstetric information, explaining 22.0% of the variance in MCS scores totally (F = 12.228, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Pregnant women perceived lower empathy from their spouses and reported lower HRQoL. Perceived empathy, particularly behavioural empathy, may significantly impact pregnant women's MCS scores but has no effect on their PCS scores. Strategies that foster perceived empathy from spouses among pregnant women are essential for facilitating healthy pregnancies and potentially improving maternal and child health.

A review of the psychometric properties and implications for the use of the fertility quality of life tool

OBJECTIVES

To analyze and synthesize the reported psychometric properties of the Fertility Quality of Life (FertiQoL) instrument and describe its implications for use in practice and research in men and women with infertility.

METHODS

A systematic literature search was performed to identify all articles using the FertiQoL tool. PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched from September 2006 through May 2022. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they reported psychometric data on the original FertiQoL tool using a sample population of individuals with infertility. Sample size, country of origin, and psychometric data were documented for each study.

RESULTS

The initial search revealed 153 articles that had utilized the FertiQoL. Following abstract, title, and full-text screenings, 53 articles reported psychometric data and met criteria for inclusion. The FertiQoL is a sound measurement with satisfactory reliability and validity. Studies indicated adequate reliability in the overall scale ([Formula: see text]), as well as the core Emotional, Mind/Body, Social, and Relational scales ([Formula: see text]) and two optional Tolerability and Environment fertility treatment subscales ([Formula: see text]). Although the Relational subscale exhibited slightly lower reliability in several studies, the internal consistency for the measurement as a whole was satisfactory. Results also indicate adequate: 1) face and content validity with extensive professional and patient feedback during development; 2) convergent validity with general quality of life, depression, and anxiety measurements; and 3) structural validity using both confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses.

CONCLUSION

The FertiQoL tool is the most commonly used instrument to measure the impact of fertility issues on quality of life in men and women with infertility. Understanding the impact of infertility on quality of life provides valuable insight into the areas of infertility-related care that need to be prioritized, such as mental health or relational stressors. While the instrument has been used in different patient populations with infertility and available in multiple translations, it is necessary to understand the updated psychometric properties and the implications for its use. This review shows that the FertiQoL is reliable and valid for cross-cultural use among individuals with various etiologies of infertility.

The dyadic interaction model of relationship quality and the impact of attachment orientation and empathy on infertile couples in China

AIM

The study was conducted to examine the effect of attachment orientation and empathy on the relationship quality of infertile couples and assess the inter-dependency model of these factors.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional survey.

METHOD

In this study, 168 infertile couples (336 individuals) were enrolled and asked to finish the following questionnaires: the revised Adult Attachment Scales, the Interpersonal Response Index questionnaire and the Relationship Quality sub-scale of the Fertility Quality of Life (FertiQol). Hierarchical regression and path analysis were used to analyse the unique and combined contribution of the independent variables to relationship quality of couples.

RESULTS

The attachment orientation of infertile couples can influence their relationship quality, and empathetic wives and husbands have actor and partner effects on the infertile couples' relationship quality. Empathetic infertile couples are conducive to the harmony of the relationship.
