Water Conservation Potential of Self-Funded Foam-Based Flexible Surface-Mounted Floatovoltaics

A potential solution to the coupled water–energy–food challenges in land use is the concept of floating photovoltaics or floatovoltaics (FPV). In this study, a new approach to FPV is investigated using a flexible crystalline silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) module backed with foam, which is less expensive than conventional pontoon-based FPV. This novel form of FPV is tested experimentally for operating temperature and performance and is analyzed for water-savings using an evaporation calculation adapted from the Penman–Monteith model. The results show that the foam-backed FPV had a lower operating temperature than conventional pontoon-based FPV, and thus a 3.5% higher energy output per unit power. Therefore, foam-based FPV provides a potentially profitable means of reducing water evaporation in the world’s at-risk bodies of fresh water. The case study of Lake Mead found that if 10% of the lake was covered with foam-backed FPV, there would be enough water conserved and electricity generated to service Las Vegas and Reno combined. At 50% coverage, the foam-backed FPV would provide over 127 TWh of clean solar electricity and 633.22 million m3 of water savings, which would provide enough electricity to retire 11% of the polluting coal-fired plants in the U.S. and provide water for over five million Americans, annually.

Rheological and Molecular Investigations of Polyethylene Degradation in a Batch Mixer

In this study, polyethylene degradation is related to its thermo-mechanical history from processing in a batch mixer. A focus is made on the rheological and molecular properties of the polyethylene subjected to different processing conditions by changing the temperature, the rotor speed and the time of process. The results indicate that while shear rheological properties changed slightly, the elongational properties were substantially modified, especially the maximum stress and the elongation at break. Due to the formation of macroradicals while processing, macromolecular changes were characterized in terms of molecular weight distribution and the results represent a balance between rates of chain scission and chain branching. It was found that the main parameter to characterize the degradation behaviour was the input power.

Extensional rheometer for in situ x-ray scattering study on flow-induced crystallization of polymer

We designed and constructed an extensional rheometer for in situ small and wide angle x-ray study on flow-induced crystallization of polymer. Two rotating drums with an axis distance of 20 mm are employed to impose extensional deformation on the samples. With a constant angular velocity, the two drums generate a constant Henkcy strain rate as sample length for testing keeps constant during deformation. An ionic liquid is used as heating medium to prevent polymer melt from bending downward due to gravity, which is excellent in terms of high thermal stability, low viscosity, and relative low adsorption on x-ray. Flow-induced crystallization experiments are conducted with this apparatus on x-ray scattering station in Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), which allows us to collect rheological and structural data simultaneously and may lead to a better understanding on flow-induced crystallization of polymer.
