Abstract
The β-crystals of polypropylene have a metastable crystal form. The formation of β-crystals can improve the toughness and heat resistance of a material. The introduction of a β-nucleating agent, over many other methods, is undoubtedly the most reliable method through which to obtain β-PP. Furthermore, in this study, certain newly developed β-nucleating agents and their compounds in recent years are listed in detail, including the less-mentioned polymer β-nucleating agents and their nucleation characteristics. In addition, the various influencing factors of β-nucleation efficiency, including the polymer matrix and processing conditions, are analyzed in detail and the corresponding improvement measures are summarized. Finally, the composites and synergistic toughening effects are discussed, and three potential future research directions are speculated upon based on previous research.

Effect of Shear Stress during Processing on Structure, Morphology, and Properties of Isotactic Polypropylene Nucleated with Silsesquioxane-Based β-Nucleating Agent. Abstract
The study aimed to determine the influence of shear stress during real-life industrial processes such as compression molding and injection molding to different cavities on the crystallization of the isotactic polypropylene nucleated with a novel silsesquioxane-based β-nucleating agent. Octakis(N2,N6-dicyclohexyl-4-(3-(dimethylsiloxy)propyl)naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxamido)octasilsesquioxane (SF-B01) is a highly effective nucleating agent (NA) based on the hybrid organic-inorganic silsesquioxane cage. The samples containing various amounts of the silsesquioxane-based and commercial iPP β-nucleants (0.01-0.5 wt%) were prepared by compression molding and injection molding, including forming in the cavities with different thicknesses. The study of the thermal properties, morphology, and mechanical properties of iPP samples allows for obtaining comprehensive information about the efficiency of silsesquioxane-based NA in shearing conditions during the forming. As a reference sample, iPP nucleated by commercial β-NA (namely N2,N6-dicyclohexylnaphthalene-2,6-dicarboxamide, NU-100) was used. The static tensile test assessed the mechanical properties of pure and nucleated iPP samples formed in different shearing conditions. Variations of the β-nucleation efficiency of the silsesquioxane-based and commercial nucleating agents caused by shear forces accompanying the crystallization process during forming were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The investigations of changes in the mechanism of interactions between silsesquioxane and commercial nucleating agents were supplemented by rheological analysis of crystallization. It was found that despite the differences in the chemical structure and solubility of the two nucleating agents, they influence the formation of the hexagonal iPP phase in a similar way, taking into consideration the shearing and cooling conditions.

Abstract
In this work, a series of silsesquioxanes (SSQ) and spherosilicates (SS), comprising a group of cage siloxane (CS) compounds, was tested as functional additives for preparation of isotactic polypropylene (iPP)-based nanocomposites and discussed in the aspect of their rationale of applicability as such additives. For this purpose, the compounds were prepared by condensation and olefin hydrosilylation reactions. The effect of these cage siloxane products on properties of obtained CS/iPP nanocomposites was analyzed by means of mechanical, microscopic (scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy), thermal (differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry), thermomechanical (Vicat softening point) analyses. The results were compared with the previous findings on CS/polyolefin composites. The role of CS compounds was discussed in terms of plastic processing additives.

Abstract
Differential scanning calorimeter was used to extensively investigate the non-isothermal crystallization of polypropylene (PP)/layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanocomposites prepared through wet solid-state shear milling. The corresponding crystallization kinetics was further investigated by using Ozawa, modified Avrami and combined Avrami-Ozawa method, respectively. The results showed that the Ozawa method could not well describe the crystallization kinetics of pure PP and its nanocomposites. Comparatively, the modified Avrami method as well as the combined Avrami-Ozawa method gives the satisfactory results. Under the effect of pan-milling, the produced LDH nano intercalated/exfoliated particles exhibit the inhibitive effect on the PP nucleation but more remarkable promotion effect on the spherulite growth, leading to enhancement in the overall crystallization rate. This is reflected in increase of the calculated fold surface free energy σe and also the supercooling degree ΔT required for crystallization nucleation. In addition, the polarized optical microscopy observation also verifies the higher spherulite growth rate of PP/LDHs nanocomposites than that of pure PP.

Abstract
A new copolymer consisting of double four ring (D4R) silicate units linked by dimethylsilicone monomer referred to as polyoligosiloxysilicone number one (PSS-1) was synthesized. The D4R building unit is provided by hexamethyleneimine cyclosilicate hydrate crystals, which were dehydrated and reacted with dichlorodimethylsilane. The local structure of D4R silicate units and dimethyl silicone monomers was revealed by multidimensional solid-state NMR, FTIR and modeling. On average, D4R silicate units have 6.8 silicone linkages. Evidence for preferential unidirectional growth and chain ordering within the PSS-1 copolymer was provided by STEM and TEM. The structure of PSS-1 copolymer consists of twisted columns of D4R silicate units with or without cross-linking. Both models are consistent with the spectroscopic, microscopic and physical properties. PSS-1 chains are predicted to be mechanically strong compared to silicones such as PDMS, yet more flexible than rigid silica materials such as zeolites.

Effect of Quinacridone Pigments on Properties and Morphology of Injection Molded Isotactic Polypropylene. INT J POLYM SCI 2017. [DOI: 10.1155/2017/7043297] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/18/2022] Open
Abstract
Two quinacridone pigments were added (0.01; 0.05; 0.1; 0.5; 1; 2 wt%) to isotactic polypropylene (iPP), and their influence on mechanical and thermomechanical properties were investigated. Complex mechanical and thermomechanical iPP properties analyses, including static tensile test, Dynstat impact resistance measurement, and hardness test, as well as dynamic mechanic thermal analysis (DMTA), were realized in reference to morphological changes of polymeric materials. In order to understand the differences in modification efficiency and changes in polymorphism of polypropylene matrix caused by incorporation of pigments, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments were done. Both pigments acted as highly effective nucleating agents that influence morphology and mechanical properties of isotactic polypropylene injection molded samples. Differences between polypropylene samples nucleated by two pigments may be attributed to different heterogeneous nucleation behavior dependent on pigment type. As it was proved by WAXS investigations, the addition of γ-quinacridone (E5B) led to crystallization of polypropylene in hexagonal phase (β-iPP), while for β-quinacridone (ER 02) modified polypropylene no evidence of iPP β-phase was observed.
