LigandDiff: de Novo Ligand Design for 3D Transition Metal Complexes with Diffusion Models

Transition metal complexes are a class of compounds with varied and versatile properties, making them of great technological importance. Their applications cover a wide range of fields, either as metallodrugs in medicine or as materials, catalysts, batteries, solar cells, etc. The demand for the novel design of transition metal complexes with new properties remains of great interest. However, the traditional high-throughput screening approach is inherently expensive and laborious since it depends on human expertise. Here, we present LigandDiff, a generative model for the de novo design of novel transition metal complexes. Unlike the existing methods that simply extract and combine ligands with the metal to get new complexes, LigandDiff aims at designing configurationally novel ligands from scratch, which opens new pathways for the discovery of organometallic complexes. Moreover, it overcomes the limitations of current methods, where the diversity of new complexes highly relies on the diversity of available ligands, while LigandDiff can design numerous novel ligands without human intervention. Our results indicate that LigandDiff designs unique and novel ligands under different contexts, and these generated ligands are synthetically accessible. Moreover, LigandDiff shows good transferability by generating successful ligands for any transition metal complex.

Organic-inorganic hybrid material for hole transport in inverted perovskite solar cells

Hole mobility is critical to the power conversion efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Organic small-molecule hole-transporting materials (HTMs) have attracted considerable interest in PSCs due to their structural flexibility and operational durability, but they suffer from modest hole mobility. On the other hand, inorganic HTMs with good hole mobility are inflexible in structural variation and exhibit unsatisfactory cell efficiency. In this study, a ligand BT28 and its zinc-based coordination complex BTZ30 were synthesized, characterized, and investigated as HTMs for PSC applications. The mixed-halide perovskites can be grown uniformly with large crystalline grains on both HTMs, which exhibit similar optical and electrochemical properties. However, it was discovered that the BTZ30-based solar cell exhibited an open-circuit voltage of 1.0817 V and a high short-circuit current density of 23.1392 mA cm-2 with a champion power conversion efficiency of close to 20 %. The performance difference between the two HTMs can be attributed to the difference in their hole mobilities, which is 63.31 % higher for BTZ30 than BT28. The comparison of non-metal and metal HTMs revealed the importance of considering hybrid structures to overcome some shortcomings associated with organic and inorganic HTMs and achieve high-performance PSCs.

Designing of fluorine-substituted benzodithiophene-based small molecules with efficient photovoltaic parameters

In this study, four hole-transporting materials (JY-M1, JY-M2, JY-M3, and JY-M4) are designed by modifying benzothiadiazole-based core with diphenylamine-based carbazole via acceptors through thiophene linkers. The designed molecules exhibited deeper HOMO energy with smaller energy gaps than the reference JY molecule which enhance their hole mobility. The absorption spectra of the JY-M1, JY-M2, JY-M3, and JY-M4 molecules are located at 380 nm to 407 nm in the gaseous phase and 397 nm to 433 nm in the solvent phase, which is red-shifted and higher than the reference molecule, demonstrating that designed molecules possess improved light absorption properties and enhanced effective hole transfer. The dipole moments of the designed molecules (14.74 D to 26.12 D) indicate a greater ability for charge separation, solubility and will be beneficial to produce multilayer films. Moreover, the results of hole reorganization energy (0.38198 eV to 0.45304 eV) and charge transfer integral (0.14315 eV to 0.14665 eV) of designing molecules show improved hole mobility and lower recombination losses compared to the JY molecule. Overall, we suggested that the structural modifications in the designed molecules contributed to their enhanced efficiency in converting light energy into electrical energy and have the potential for utilization in solar devices, paving the way for future advancements in the field of photovoltaics.

Studying manganese carbonyl photochemistry in a permanently porous metal-organic framework

Mn(diimine)(CO)3X (X = halide) complexes are critical components of chromophores, photo- and electrocatalysts, and photoactive CO-releasing molecules (photoCORMs). While these entities have been incorporated into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a detailed understanding of the photochemical and chemical processes that occur in a permanently porous support is lacking. Here we site-isolate and study the photochemistry of a Mn(diimine)(CO)3Br moiety anchored within a permanently porous MOF support, allowing for not only the photo-liberation of CO from the metal but also its escape from the MOF crystals. In addition, the high crystallinity and structural flexibility of the MOF allows crystallographic snapshots of the photolysis products to be obtained. We report these photo-crystallographic studies in the presence of coordinating solvents, THF and acetonitrile, showing the changing coordination environment of the Mn species as CO loss proceeds. Using time resolved experiments, we report complementary spectroscopic studies of the photolysis chemistry and characterize the final photolysis product as a possible Mn(ii) entity. These studies inform the chemistry that occurs in MOF-based photoCORMs and where these moieties are employed as catalysts.

Nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus Co-doped carbon dots-based ratiometric chemosensor for highly selective sequential detection of Al3+ and Fe3+ ions in logic gate, cell imaging, and real sample analysis

Heteroatom-doped photoluminescent (PL) carbon dots (CDs) have recently gained attention as optical sensors due to their excellent tunable properties. In this work, we propose a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of PL nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), and phosphorus (P) co-doped carbon dots (NSP-CDs) using glutathione and phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) as precursors. The synthesized NSP-CDs were characterized using different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, including ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The NSP-CDs exhibited excellent PL properties with green emission at 492 nm upon excitation at 417 nm, a high quantum yield of 26.7%, and dependent emission behavior. The as-prepared NSP-CDs were spherical with a well-monodispersed average particle size of 5.2 nm. Moreover, NSP-CDs demonstrate high PL stability toward a wider pH, high salt ionic strength, and various solvents. Furthermore, the NSP-CDs showed a three-state "off-on-off" PL response upon the sequential addition of Al³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 10.8 nM for Al³⁺ and 50.7 nM for Fe³⁺. The NSP-CD sensor can construct an INHIBIT logic gate with Al³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions as the chemical inputs and emissions as the output mode. Owing to an excellent tunable PL property and biocompatibility, the NSP-CDs were applied for sensing Al³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions as well as live cell imaging. Furthermore, NSP-CDs were designed as PL sensors for detecting Al³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions in real water show their potential application.

Optical and Thermal Investigations of Eutectic Metallomesogen Mixtures Based on Salicylaldiaminates Metal Complexes with a Large Nematic Stability Range

The mesomorphic behavior and the miscibility properties of binary mixtures of a new series of Schiff base metallomesogen (MOM) are evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), elemental analysis (CHNX), Fourier−transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to certify the molecular structure of the compounds. The results revealed that the studied mixtures are completely miscible throughout the composition field and exhibit a nematic phase which covered the whole composition range. In the mixtures, the stability of the nematic phase varies continuously, and it is possible to highlight the presence of a eutectic composition with a wide mesogenic stability range.
