Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity and Biosensing of Gadolinium Substituted BiFeO3 Nanoparticles

Grafting a Porous Metal-Organic Framework [NH2-MIL-101(Fe)] with AgCl Nanoparticles for the Efficient Removal of Congo Red

Organic dyes can produce harmful effects on the water environment, such as affecting the growth of aquatic organisms, reducing the transparency of water bodies, and causing eutrophication of water bodies, so it is necessary to mitigate the hazards of organic dyes. In this study, a metal-organic framework [NH₂-MIL-101(Fe)] was synthesized by the solvothermal method as a carrier for the in situ uniform deposition of AgCl nanoparticles on its surface, which was successfully used for both adsorption and degradation of Congo red. Adsorption results showed that the adsorption kinetics conformed to the proposed secondary adsorption kinetics equation with a maximum adsorption capacity of 248.4 mg·g^-1. Furthermore, the degradation results indicated that with the aid of sodium borohydride as a reducing agent, the degradation of Congo red followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with a degradation rate of 0.077 min^-1, and the complete degradation of Congo red was finished within 18 min. Therefore, AgCl/NH₂-MIL-101(Fe) may find a potential application in the removal of dyes from wastewater.

GO/ZnO nanocomposite - as transducer platform for electrochemical sensing towards environmental applications

Graphene Oxide-Zinc Oxide (GO-ZnO) - a new nanomaterial that has queued the interest of researchers. Their intriguing promising physical and electrochemical features of electrode material have led to its widespread use in electrochemical sensor applications. GO-ZnO based nanomaterial were extensively exploited in the construction of electrochemical sensors due to their adaptability and distinct qualities. On understanding the structural role of these materials, their modification processes are critical for realizing their full potential. The advancement of technology on new concepts and strategies has revolutionized the field of sensor devices with high sensitivities and selectivity. These tools can test a range of contaminants quickly, accurately, and affordably while performing automated chemical analysis in complicated matrices. This paper highlights the electrochemical transducer surface for sensing various analytes and current research activity on GO-ZnO nanocomposite. Additionally, we talked about current developments in GO-ZnO nanostructured composites to identify relevant analytes (i.e., Nitrophenols, Antibiotic Drugs, Biomolecules). While being used in the laboratory, the majority of produced systems have proven to bring about excellent gains. Their monitoring application still has a long way to go before it is fixed due to problems like technological advancements and multifunctional strategies to get around the challenges for improving the sensing systems.

Multifunctional NiFe2O4 nanoparticles for sodium-ion batteries, sensing, and photocatalysis

NiFe2O4 NPs synthesized by co-precipitation method exhibited excellent electrochemical properties towards sodium ion batteries and oxidation of uric acid. NiFe2O4 NPs also exhibited good catalytic activity for simultaneous degradation of multiple dyes.

Enhanced catalytic activity of OMS-2 for carcinogenic benzene elimination by tuning Sr2+ contents in the tunnels

Cryptomelane-type manganese oxides (OMS-2) have been intensively investigated for application in the catalytic oxidation of carcinogenic benzene, and doping metal ions in the OMS-2 tunnels are widely used for modifying its catalytic activity. In this study, we reported a novel strategy of enhancing catalytic activity of OMS-2 for carcinogenic benzene elimination by tuning Sr²⁺ concentration in the tunnels. The catalytic activity result revealed that an obvious decrease (△T₅₀ = 27 °C and △T₉₀ = 37 °C) in T₅₀ and T₉₀ (corresponding to benzene conversions at 50 % and 90 %, respectively; initial benzene concentration was 2000 mg m^-3; contact time was 1.5 s) had been observed by increasing the Sr²⁺ concentration in the OMS-2 tunnels. The origin of Sr²⁺ doping effect on catalytic activity was theoretically and experimentally investigated by CO temperature-programmed reduction, ¹⁸O₂ isotope labeling, and density functional theory calculations. The result confirmed that increasing Sr²⁺ concentration in the tunnels not only promoted the lattice oxygen activity, but also facilitated the generation of more oxygen vacancy defects, thus considerably improving the catalytic activity of OMS-2.

Naturally available diatomite and their surface modification for the removal of hazardous dye and metal ions: A review

The presence of toxic pollutants such as dyes and metal ions at higher concentrations in water is very harmful to the environment. Removal of these pollutants using diatomaceous earth or diatomite (DE) and surface-modified DE has been extensively explored due to their excellent physio-chemical properties and low cost. Therefore, naturally available DE being inexpensive, their surface modified adsorbents could be one of the potential candidates for the wastewater treatment in the future. In this context, the current review has been summarized for the removal of both pollutants i.e., dyes and metal ions by surface-modified DE using the facile adsorption process. In addition, this review is prominently focused on the various modification process of DE, their cost-effectiveness; the physio-chemical characteristics and their maximum adsorption capacity. Further, real-time scenarios of reported adsorbents were tabulated based on the cost of the process along with the adsorption capacity of these adsorbents.

Facile synthesis of TiO2/Ag3PO4 composites with co-exposed high-energy facets for efficient photodegradation of rhodamine B solution under visible light irradiation

In this study, TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composites based on anatase TiO₂ nanocrystals with co-exposed {101}, {010}/{100}, {001} and [111]-facets and Ag₃PO₄ microcrystals with irregular and cubic-like polyhedron morphologies were successfully synthesized by combining hydrothermal and ion-exchange methods. The anatase TiO₂ nanocrystals with different high-energy facets were controllably prepared via hydrothermal treatment of the exfoliated [Ti₄O₉]²⁻/[Ti₂O₅]²⁻ nanosheet solutions at desired pH values. The Ag₃PO₄ microcrystal with different morphologies was prepared via the ion-exchange method in the presence of AgNO₃ and NH₄H₂PO₄ at room temperature, which was used as a substrate to load the as-prepared anatase TiO₂ nanocrystals on its surface and to form TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ heterostructures. The apparent rate constant of the pH 3.5-TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composite was the highest at 12.0 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹, which was approximately 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 13.3, and 24.0 fold higher than that of pH 0.5-TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ (10.5 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), pH 7.5-TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ (10.2 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), pH 11.5-TiO₂ (8.8 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), Ag₃PO₄ (7.7 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), blank sample (0.9 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), and the commercial TiO₂ (0.5 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), respectively. The pH 3.5-TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composite exhibited the highest visible-light photocatalytic activity which can be attributed to the synergistic effects of its heterostructure, relatively small crystal size, large specific surface area, good crystallinity, and co-exposed high-energy {001} and [111]-facets. The as-prepared TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composites still exhibited good photocatalytic activity after three successive experimental runs, indicating that they had remarkable stability. This study provides a new way for the preparation of TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composite semiconductor photocatalysts with high energy crystal surfaces and high photocatalytic activity.

Preparation of multi-functional magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposite for adsorption and detection of thiram using SERS

Magnetic materials have been widely used for constructing substrate in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing due to the magnetic responsibility. Here, we reported a facile and effective approach to construct multi-functional SERS substrate based on assembling Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on porous Fe microspheres. The porous Fe microspheres were prepared through hydrogen reduction of Fe₂O₃ NPs with porous structure, in which the size and morphology of Fe could be well controlled. The surface of Fe was grafted with amino group, and then decorated with Ag NPs. The surface area and pore size of Fe microsphere were characterized by nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The Fe@Ag nanocomposite illustrated a good SERS activity. Furthermore, this substrate could be used for pesticide monitoring by portable Raman spectrometer. Especially, the porous Fe microsphere could adsorb analyte from target sample and the Fe@Ag could be concentrated by magnetic force to amplify the SERS signal for thiram detection.

NiCo2O4 Nano-/Microstructures as High-Performance Biosensors: A Review

Non-enzymatic biosensors based on mixed transition metal oxides are deemed as the most promising devices due to their high sensitivity, selectivity, wide concentration range, low detection limits, and excellent recyclability. Spinel NiCo2O4 mixed oxides have drawn considerable attention recently due to their outstanding advantages including large specific surface area, high permeability, short electron, and ion diffusion pathways. Because of the rapid development of non-enzyme biosensors, the current state of methods for synthesis of pure and composite/hybrid NiCo2O4 materials and their subsequent electrochemical biosensing applications are systematically and comprehensively reviewed herein. Comparative analysis reveals better electrochemical sensing of bioanalytes by one-dimensional and two-dimensional NiCo2O4 nano-/microstructures than other morphologies. Better biosensing efficiency of NiCo2O4 as compared to corresponding individual metal oxides, viz. NiO and Co3O4, is attributed to the close intrinsic-state redox couples of Ni3+/Ni2+ (0.58 V/0.49 V) and Co3+/Co2+ (0.53 V/0.51 V). Biosensing performance of NiCo2O4 is also significantly improved by making the composites of NiCo2O4 with conducting carbonaceous materials like graphene, reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes (single and multi-walled), carbon nanofibers; conducting polymers like polypyrrole (PPy), polyaniline (PANI); metal oxides NiO, Co3O4, SnO2, MnO2; and metals like Au, Pd, etc. Various factors affecting the morphologies and biosensing parameters of the nano-/micro-structured NiCo2O4 are also highlighted. Finally, some drawbacks and future perspectives related to this promising field are outlined.

Amplified electrochemical determination of UO22+ based on the cleavage of the DNAzyme and DNA-modified gold nanoparticle network structure

A superior electrochemical biosensor was designed for the determination of UO₂²⁺ in aqueous solution by integration of DNAzyme and DNA-modified gold nanoparticle (DNA-AuNP) network structure. Key features of this method include UO₂²⁺ inducing the cleavage of the DNAzyme and signal amplification of DNA-AuNP network structure. In this electrochemical method, the DNA-AuNP network structure can be effectively modified on the surface of gold electrode and then employed as an ideal signal amplification unit to generate amplified electrochemical response by inserting a large amount of electrochemically active indicator methylene blue (MB). In the presence of UO₂²⁺, the specific sites on DNA-AuNP network structure can be cleaved by UO₂²⁺, releasing the DNA-AuNP network structure with detectable reduction of electrochemical response intensity. The electrochemical response intensity is related to the concentration of UO₂²⁺. The logarithm of electrochemical response intensity and UO₂²⁺ concentration showed a wide linear range of 10~100 pM, and the detection limit reached 8.1 pM (S/N = 3). This method is successfully used for determination of UO₂²⁺ in water samples. Graphical abstract Fabricated DNAzyme network structure for enhanced electrical signal. Numerical experiments show that the current signal decreases as the concentration of UO₂²⁺ increases. It can be seen that the biosensors could be used to detect UO₂²⁺ in aqueous solution effectively.

Highly distorted mesoporous S/C/Ti3+ doped black TiO2 for simultaneous visible light degradation of multiple dyes

S–B-TiO₂ exhibited 90 and 96% visible light simultaneous degradation of rose bengal and methylene blue dyes in 80 min, respectively.

Aqueous Cu(ii) ion adsorption by amino-functionalized mesoporous silica KIT-6

After two-step modification, the adsorption capacity of PEI/KIT-6 for Cu²⁺ is significantly improved.
