A Novel Electrochemical Sensor Based on A Glassy Carbon Electrode Modified with GO/MnO 2 for Simultaneous Determination of Trace Cu(II) and Pb(II) in Environmental Water

MIL-88B(Fe)-NH2: an amine-functionalized metal-organic framework for application in a sensitive electrochemical sensor for Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ ion detection

We propose here an electrochemical platform for multi-heavy metal ion detection in water based on MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂, an amine-functioned metal-organic framework (MOF) for modifying the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Herein, MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂ with abundant functionalized amine groups can play the role of capture sites for the enrichment of metal ions before electrochemical oxidation sensing. MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂ was synthesized under optimized conditions through a solvothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transition electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂ was then drop-casted on GCE to electrochemically determine the Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ion concentrations by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The electrochemical sensor exhibits excellent electrochemical performance toward Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions in the large linear ranges of 0.025-1.000 μM, 0.3-10.0 μM and 0.6-10.0 μM with limits of detection that are 2.0 × 10^-10 M, 1.92 × 10^-7 M and 3.81 × 10^-7 M, respectively. The fabricated sensor also shows high reliability and good selectivity. This MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂ application strategy is promising for the evaluation of various heavy metal ions in water.

Fabrication of Screen-Printed Electrodes Modified by Hydrothermal MnO2 Microflowers and Carbon for Electrochemical Sensors in Copper Ions Detection

Porous MnO2 microflowers with a hexagonal crystalline structure were facilely prepared at a low hydrothermal temperature of 90°C, without using any template or capping agent. The as-prepared MnO2 only presented an excellent detection ability for copper (II) by a square wave anodic stripping voltammetry in the presence of super P carbon black as conducting agent, and Nafion as binder. In the present work, to evaluate the detection ability of copper (II) in the MnO2 microflowers, chips of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) having a polyurethane substrate, a silver working electrode, a carbon counter electrode, and a silver pseudoelectrode, were designed. Then, the SPEs chips were modified with MnO2 microflowers and/or super P carbon and used as electrochemical sensors for the detection of copper (II) present in water sources. From the measured results, the fabricated sensors with excellent copper detection in a linear range from 0.625 nM to 15 nM (R2 = 0.9737), and a low detection limit (0.5 nM), high sensitivity (214.05 μA/cm2 nM), and rapid response (180 s) demonstrated high application potential for electrochemical sensors in the detection of copper in water resources.

Two-Dimensional Material-Based Electrochemical Sensors/Biosensors for Food Safety and Biomolecular Detection

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) exhibited great potential for applications in materials science, energy storage, environmental science, biomedicine, sensors/biosensors, and others due to their unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. In this review, we present recent advances in the fabrication of 2DM-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors for applications in food safety and biomolecular detection that are related to human health. For this aim, firstly, we introduced the bottom-up and top-down synthesis methods of various 2DMs, such as graphene, transition metal oxides, transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, and several other graphene-like materials, and then we demonstrated the structure and surface chemistry of these 2DMs, which play a crucial role in the functionalization of 2DMs and subsequent composition with other nanoscale building blocks such as nanoparticles, biomolecules, and polymers. Then, the 2DM-based electrochemical sensors/biosensors for the detection of nitrite, heavy metal ions, antibiotics, and pesticides in foods and drinks are introduced. Meanwhile, the 2DM-based sensors for the determination and monitoring of key small molecules that are related to diseases and human health are presented and commented on. We believe that this review will be helpful for promoting 2DMs to construct novel electronic sensors and nanodevices for food safety and health monitoring.

Facile preparation of MnO2-TiO2 nanotube arrays composite electrode for electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide

The MnO₂-TNTA composite electrodes were obtained through depositing MnO₂ into TiO₂ nanotube arrays (TNTA) by successive ionic layer adsorption reaction (SILAR) and subsequent hydrothermal method. The MnO₂-TNTA nanocomposites were used as electrochemical sensors for the detection of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). The preparation conditions of MnO₂-TNTA electrodes and test conditions affect the electrochemical detection performance significantly. The optimal conditions are listed as follows: the number of SILAR cycles, 6 times; KMnO₄ solution temperature, 50 °C; supporting electrolyte, 0.5 M NaOH. Under these conditions, the MnO₂-TNTA electrode exhibits the best performance for detecting H₂O₂. The optimized MnO₂-TNTA electrode has a minimum detection limit of 0.6 μM (S/N = 3) and a linear range of 5 μM ∼ 13 mM, which is much superior to the previously-reported electrodes. Moreover, the optimized MnO₂-TNTA electrode possesses high selectivity, excellent stability and good reproducibility in the detection of H₂O₂. When used in the determination of H₂O₂ content in actual samples including disinfectant and milk, it also shows good accuracy, ideal recovery (96.00% ∼ 102.67%) and high precision (RSD < 4.0%).
