Parallel, Multi-Material Electrohydrodynamic 3D Nanoprinting

High density, addressable electrohydrodynamic printhead made of a silicon plate and polymer nozzle structure

Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing is a promising micro/nanofabrication technique, due to its ultra-high resolution and wide material applicability. However, it suffers from low printing efficiency which urgently calls for a high density and addressable nozzle array. This paper presents a nozzle array chip made of a silicon plate and polymer nozzle structure, where the large silicon plate is conducive to a uniform spatial electric field distribution, and the polymer SU8 nozzle can inhibit tip discharge due to its insulating character and liquid flooding as SU8 is hydrophobic. By carefully designing the nozzle array structure via simulation, and fabricating it through MEMS technology, a high-density nozzle array chip has been achieved which can generate very uniform dots without crosstalk. Meanwhile, by adding extractors underneath the nozzle array, and utilizing a digital switch array to tune their on/off state, addressable printing has been realized. This novel printhead design has solved the discharge, liquid flooding, and crosstalk behavior in EHD nozzle arrays, and is compatible with traditional silicon-based MEMS technology, which will promote the practical applications of EHD printing in micro/nanoelectronics, biomedical/energy devices, etc.

High-Resolution 3D Printing for Electronics

The ability to form arbitrary 3D structures provides the next level of complexity and a greater degree of freedom in the design of electronic devices. Since recent progress in electronics has expanded their applicability in various fields in which structural conformability and dynamic configuration are required, high-resolution 3D printing technologies can offer significant potential for freeform electronics. Here, the recent progress in novel 3D printing methods for freeform electronics is reviewed, with providing a comprehensive study on 3D-printable functional materials and processes for various device components. The latest advances in 3D-printed electronics are also reviewed to explain representative device components, including interconnects, batteries, antennas, and sensors. Furthermore, the key challenges and prospects for next-generation printed electronics are considered, and the future directions are explored based on research that has emerged recently.

Facile fabrication of flexible metal grid transparent electrode using inkjet-printed dot array as sacrificial layer

In this study, we introduce a flexible metal grid transparent electrode fabricated using a lift-off process. This transparent electrode consisting of metal thin film with punched-like pattern by hole array was fabricated with 8 um separations. The separation of inkjet-printed etching resistant ink droplets was controlled in order to investigate the relationship between its electrical and optical properties of the electrodes. The aluminum areal density was defined to predict the electrical and optical properties of different arrays. A high and uniform transmittance spectrum appears to extend broadly into the UV region. The figure of merit of the transparent electrode was investigated in order to determine its performance as a transparent electrode. Moreover, there was no significant change in the resistance after 7000 bending cycles, indicating that the array conductor had superior stability. We also demonstrate transparent touch screen panels fabricated using the transparent electrode.

Emerging Technologies in Multi-Material Bioprinting

Bioprinting, within the emerging field of biofabrication, aims at the fabrication of functional biomimetic constructs. Different 3D bioprinting techniques have been adapted to bioprint cell-laden bioinks. However, single-material bioprinting techniques oftentimes fail to reproduce the complex compositions and diversity of native tissues. Multi-material bioprinting as an emerging approach enables the fabrication of heterogeneous multi-cellular constructs that replicate their host microenvironments better than single-material approaches. Here, bioprinting modalities are reviewed, their being adapted to multi-material bioprinting is discussed, and their advantages and challenges, encompassing both custom-designed and commercially available technologies are analyzed. A perspective of how multi-material bioprinting opens up new opportunities for tissue engineering, tissue model engineering, therapeutics development, and personalized medicine is offered.

High-Resolution Colloidal Quantum Dot Film Photolithography via Atomic Layer Deposition of ZnO

High-resolution patterning of quantum dot (QD) films is one of the preconditions for the practical use of QD-based emissive display platforms. Recently, inkjet printing and transfer printing have been actively developed; however, high-resolution patterning is still limited owing to nozzle-clogging issues and coffee ring effects during the inkjet printing and kinetic parameters such as pickup and peeling speed during the transfer process. Consequently, employing direct optical lithography would be highly beneficial owing to its well-established process in the semiconductor industry; however, exposing the photoresist (PR) on top of the QD film deteriorates the QD film underneath. This is because a majority of the solvents for PR easily dissolve the pre-existing QD films. In this study, we present a conventional optical lithography process to obtain solvent resistance by reacting the QD film surface with diethylzinc (DEZ) precursors using atomic layer deposition. It was confirmed that, by reacting the QD surface with DEZ and coating PR directly on top of the QD film, a typical photolithography process can be performed to generate a red/green/blue pixel of 3000 ppi or more. QD electroluminescence devices were fabricated with all primary colors of QDs; moreover, compared to reference QD-LED devices, the patterned QD-LED devices exhibited enhanced brightness and efficiency.

Thermal Disproportionation for the Synthesis of Silicon Nanocrystals and Their Photoluminescent Properties

In the past decades, silicon nanocrystals have received vast attention and have been widely studied owing to not only their advantages including nontoxicity, high availability, and abundance but also their unique luminescent properties distinct from bulk silicon. Among the various synthetic methods of silicon nanocrystals, thermal disproportionation of silicon suboxides (often with H as another major composing element) bears the superiorities of unsophisticated equipment requirements, feasible processing conditions, and precise control of nanocrystals size and structure, which guarantee a bright industrial application prospect. In this paper, we summarize the recent progress of thermal disproportionation chemistry for the synthesis of silicon nanocrystals, with the focus on the effects of temperature, Si/O ratio, and the surface groups on the resulting silicon nanocrystals’ structure and their corresponding photoluminescent properties. Moreover, the paradigmatic application scenarios of the photoluminescent silicon nanocrystals synthesized via this method are showcased or envisioned.

Electrochemical Polymer Pen Lithography

The development of a massively parallel lithographic technique called electrochemical polymer pen lithography is reported. Pyramidal pen arrays, consisting of more than 10 000 hydrogel pens loaded with metal salts, are integrated into a three-electrode cell and used to locally reduce ions at each pen tip. This system enables high-throughput patterning of a variety of metallic inks (e.g., Ni²⁺ , Pt²⁺ , Ag⁺ ) on the nanometer to micrometer length scale. By incorporating a z-direction piezo actuator, the extension length and dwell time can be used to precisely define feature dimensions (210 to 10 µm in width, and up to 900 nm in height, thus far). Furthermore, by controlling the potential and precursor concentrations, more than one element can be simultaneously deposited, creating a new tool for the synthesis of alloy features, such as NiCo, which are relevant for catalysis. Importantly, this methodology enables fine control over feature size and composition in a single pattern, which may make it ultimately useful for rapid, high-throughput combinatorial screening of metallic features.

A Review of Vat Photopolymerization Technology: Materials, Applications, Challenges, and Future Trends of 3D Printing

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) has significantly changed the prototyping process in terms of technology, construction, materials, and their multiphysical properties. Among the most popular 3D printing techniques is vat photopolymerization, in which ultraviolet (UV) light is deployed to form chains between molecules of liquid light-curable resin, crosslink them, and as a result, solidify the resin. In this manuscript, three photopolymerization technologies, namely, stereolithography (SLA), digital light processing (DLP), and continuous digital light processing (CDLP), are reviewed. Additionally, the after-cured mechanical properties of light-curable resin materials are listed, along with a number of case studies showing their applications in practice. The manuscript aims at providing an overview and future trend of the photopolymerization technology to inspire the readers to engage in further research in this field, especially regarding developing new materials and mathematical models for microrods and bionic structures.

Microplotter-Printed On-Chip Combinatorial Library of Ink-Derived Multiple Metal Oxides as an "Electronic Olfaction" Unit

Information about the surrounding atmosphere at a real timescale significantly relies on available gas sensors to be efficiently combined into multisensor arrays as electronic olfaction units. However, the array's performance is challenged by the ability to provide orthogonal responses from the employed sensors at a reasonable cost. This issue becomes more demanded when the arrays are designed under an on-chip paradigm to meet a number of emerging calls either in the internet-of-things industry or in situ noninvasive diagnostics of human breath, to name a few, for small-sized low-powered detectors. The recent advances in additive manufacturing provide a solid top-down background to develop such chip-based gas-analytical systems under low-cost technology protocols. Here, we employ hydrolytically active heteroligand complexes of metals as ink components for microplotter patterning a multioxide combinatorial library of chemiresistive type at a single chip equipped with multiple electrodes. To primarily test the performance of such a multisensor array, various semiconducting oxides of the p- and n-conductance origins based on pristine and mixed nanocrystalline MnO_x, TiO₂, ZrO₂, CeO₂, ZnO, Cr₂O₃, Co₃O₄, and SnO₂ thin films, of up to 70 nm thick, have been printed over hundred μm areas and their micronanostructure and fabrication conditions are thoroughly assessed. The developed multioxide library is shown to deliver at a range of operating temperatures, up to 400 °C, highly sensitive and highly selective vector signals to different, but chemically akin, alcohol vapors (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, and n-butanol) as examples at low ppm concentrations when mixed with air. The suggested approach provides us a promising way to achieve cost-effective and well-performed electronic olfaction devices matured from the diverse chemiresistive responses of the printed nanocrystalline oxides.

Printed Electrochemical Biosensors: Opportunities and Metrological Challenges

Printed electrochemical biosensors have recently gained increasing relevance in fields ranging from basic research to home-based point-of-care. Thus, they represent a unique opportunity to enable low-cost, fast, non-invasive and/or continuous monitoring of cells and biomolecules, exploiting their electrical properties. Printing technologies represent powerful tools to combine simpler and more customizable fabrication of biosensors with high resolution, miniaturization and integration with more complex microfluidic and electronics systems. The metrological aspects of those biosensors, such as sensitivity, repeatability and stability, represent very challenging aspects that are required for the assessment of the sensor itself. This review provides an overview of the opportunities of printed electrochemical biosensors in terms of transducing principles, metrological characteristics and the enlargement of the application field. A critical discussion on metrological challenges is then provided, deepening our understanding of the most promising trends in order to overcome them: printed nanostructures to improve the limit of detection, sensitivity and repeatability; printing strategies to improve organic biosensor integration in biological environments; emerging printing methods for non-conventional substrates; microfluidic dispensing to improve repeatability. Finally, an up-to-date analysis of the most recent examples of printed electrochemical biosensors for the main classes of target analytes (live cells, nucleic acids, proteins, metabolites and electrolytes) is reported.

On-Demand 3D Printing of Nanowire Probes for High-Aspect-Ratio Atomic Force Microscopy Imaging

With the growing importance of three-dimensional (3D) nanomaterials and devices, there has been a great demand for high-fidelity, full profile topographic characterizations in a nondestructive manner. A promising route is to employ a high-aspect-ratio (HAR) probe in atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. However, the fabrication of HAR-AFM probes continues to suffer from extravagant cost, limited material choice, and complicated manufacturing steps. Here, we report one-step, on-demand electrohydrodynamic 3D printing of metallic HAR-AFM probes with tailored dimensions. Our additive fabrication approach yields a freestanding metallic nanowire with an aspect ratio over 30 directly on a cantilever within tens of seconds, producing a HAR-AFM probe. Furthermore, the benefits associated with unprecedented simplicity in the probe's dimension control, material selection, and regeneration are provided. The 3D-printed HAR-AFM probe exhibits a better fidelity in deep trench AFM imaging than a standard pyramidal probe. We expect this approach to find facile, material-saving manufacturing routes in particular for customizing functional nanoprobes.

Recent progress in creating complex and multiplexed surface-grafted macromolecular architectures

Surface-grafted macromolecules, including polymers, DNA, peptides, etc., are versatile modifications to tailor the interfacial functions in a wide range of fields. In this review, we aim to provide an overview of the most recent progress in engineering surface-grafted chains for the creation of complex and multiplexed surface architectures over micro- to macro-scopic areas. A brief introduction to surface grafting is given first. Then the fabrication of complex surface architectures is summarized with a focus on controlled chain conformations, grafting densities and three-dimensional structures. Furthermore, recent advances are highlighted for the generation of multiplexed arrays with designed chemical composition in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. The applications of such complicated macromolecular architectures are then briefly discussed. Finally, some perspective outlooks for future studies and challenges are suggested. We hope that this review will be helpful to those just entering this field and those in the field requiring quick access to useful reference information about the progress in the properties, processing, performance, and applications of functional surface-grafted architectures.
