A Polarization Boosted Strategy for the Modification of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides as Electrocatalysts for Water-Splitting

Exceptionally Bifunctional ORR/OER Performance via Synergistic Atom-Cluster Interaction

The single-atom sites (SAs) have achieved enhanced performance toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with the effective utilization of the active sites. However, the excess adsorption of the intermediates and the limited stability hinders performance improvement. Metal clusters with promising stability and weak adsorption can be used as potential substitutions, but the lack of active sites is considered undesirable for catalytic reactions. Herein, a framework of Fe nanoclusters combined with SAs on One dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (Fe3C-NCNTs 90 min CC-1) is synthesized to confirm the synergistic atom-cluster interaction. The composite exhibits strong polarization and electron redistribution between nanocluster and SAs. The electron redistribution will significantly boost the electron transport and the desorption of the intermediates, which is confirmed by off-axis holography and DFT calculation. The electrocatalytic performance is significantly enhanced as the half-wave potential of ORR increased 75 mV and the potential of OER increased 133 mV compared with the sample without nanoclusters. Furthermore, such a bifunctional catalyst endows homemade Zn-air batteries (ZABs) with high power density and long-term stability. This work paves a facile route to design bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalysts consisting of 0D composite structures.

Work Function-Guided Electrocatalyst Design

The development of high-performance electrocatalysts for energy conversion reactions is crucial for advancing global energy sustainability. The design of catalysts based on their electronic properties (e.g., work function) has gained significant attention recently. Although numerous reviews on electrocatalysis have been provided, no such reports on work function-guided electrocatalyst design are available. Herein, a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements in work function-guided electrocatalyst design for diverse electrochemical energy applications is provided. This includes the development of work function-based catalytic activity descriptors, and the design of both monolithic and heterostructural catalysts. The measurement of work function is first discussed and the applications of work function-based catalytic activity descriptors for various reactions are fully analyzed. Subsequently, the work function-regulated material-electrolyte interfacial electron transfer (IET) is employed for monolithic catalyst design, and methods for regulating the work function and optimizing the catalytic performance of catalysts are discussed. In addition, key strategies for tuning the work function-governed material-material IET in heterostructural catalyst design are examined. Finally, perspectives on work function determination, work function-based activity descriptors, and catalyst design are put forward to guide future research. This work paves the way to the work function-guided rational design of efficient electrocatalysts for sustainable energy applications.

Integration of Triphenylene-Based Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks into Carbon Nanotube Electrodes for Boosting Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensing

The rational design and preparation of conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are alluring and challenging pathways to develop active catalysts toward electrocatalytic glucose oxidation. The hybridization of conductive MOFs with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the form of a composite can greatly improve the electrocatalytic performance. Herein, a facile one-step synthetic strategy is utilized to fabricate a Ni3(HHTP)2/CNT (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) composite for nonenzymatic detection of glucose in an alkaline solution. The Ni3(HHTP)2/CNT composite, as an electrochemical glucose sensor material, exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation with a wide detection range of up to 3.9 mM, a low detection limit of 4.1 μM (signal/noise = 3), a fast amperometric response time of <2 s, and a high sensitivity of 4774 μA mM-1 cm-2, surpassing the performance of some recently reported nonenzymatic transition-metal-based glucose sensors. In addition, the composite sensor also shows outstanding selectivity, robust long-term electrochemical stability, favorable anti-interference properties, and good reproducibility. This work displays the effectiveness of enhancing the electrocatalytic performance toward glucose detection by combing conductive MOFs with CNTs, thereby opening up an applicable and encouraging approach for the design of advanced nonenzymatic glucose sensors.

Engineering the Local Atomic Configuration in 2H TMDs for Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The introduction of heteroatoms is a widely employed strategy for electrocatalysis of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). This approach activates the inactive basal plane, effectively boosting the intrinsic catalytic activity. However, the effect of atomic configurations incorporated within the TMDs' lattice on catalytic activity is not thoroughly understood owing to the lack of controllable synthetic approaches for highly doped TMDs. In this study, we demonstrate a facile approach to realizing heavily doped MoS₂ with a high doping concentration above 16% via intermediate-reaction-mediated chemical vapor deposition. As the V doping concentration increased, the incorporated V atoms coalesced in a manner that enabled both the basal plane activation and electrical conductivity enhancement of MoS₂. This accelerated the kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through the reduced Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption, as evidenced by experimental and theoretical analyses. Consequently, the coalesced V-doped MoS₂ exhibited superior HER performance, with an overpotential of 100 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, surpassing the pristine and single-atom-doped counterparts. This study provides an intriguing pathway for engineering the atomic doping configuration of TMDs to develop efficient 2D nanomaterial-based electrocatalysts.

Tungsten Disulfide-Interfacing Nickel-Porphyrin For Photo-Enhanced Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Covalent functionalization of tungsten disulfide (WS₂ ) with photo- and electro-active nickel-porphyrin (NiP) is reported. Exfoliated WS₂ interfacing NiP moieties with 1,2-dithiolane linkages is assayed in the oxygen evolution reaction under both dark and illuminated conditions. The hybrid material presented, WS₂ -NiP, is fully characterized with complementary spectroscopic, microscopic, and thermal techniques. Standard yet advanced electrochemical techniques, such as linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and calculation of the electrochemically active surface area, are used to delineate the catalytic profile of WS₂ -NiP. In-depth study of thin films with transient photocurrent and photovoltage response assays uncovers photo-enhanced electrocatalytic behavior. The observed photo-enhanced electrocatalytic activity of WS₂ -NiP is attributed to the presence of Ni centers coordinated and stabilized by the N₄ motifs of tetrapyrrole rings at the tethered porphyrin derivative chains, which work as photoreceptors. This pioneering work opens wide routes for water oxidation, further contributing to the development of non-noble metal electrocatalysts.

Manipulating the Rectifying Contact between Ultrafine Ru Nanoclusters and N-Doped Carbon Nanofibers for High-Efficiency pH-Universal Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The rational design of ingenious strategies to boost the intrinsic activity and stability of ruthenium (Ru) is of great importance for the substantial progression of water electrolysis technology. Based on Mott-Schottky effect, electronic regulation within a metal/semiconductor hybrid electrocatalyst represents a versatile strategy to boost the electrochemical performance. Herein, a typical Mott-Schottky hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst composed of uniform ultrafine Ru nanoclusters in situ anchored on N-doped carbon nanofibers (abbreviated as Ru@N-CNFs hereafter) through a feasible and scalable "phenolic resin-bridged" strategy is reported. Both spectroscopy analyses and density functional theory calculations manifest that such rectifying contact can induce the spontaneous electron transfer from Ru to N-doped carbon nanofibers to generate a built-in electric field, thus enormously promoting the charge transfer efficiency and HER intrinsic activity. Moreover, the seamless immobilization of Ru nanoclusters on the substrate can prevent the active sites from unfavorable migration, coarsening, and detachment, rendering the excellent structural stability. Consequently, the well-designed Ru@N-CNFs afford prominent pH-universal HER performances with small overpotentials of 16 and 17 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and low Tafel slopes of 31.8 and 28.5 mV dec^-1 in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, respectively, which are superior to the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C and Ru/C benchmarks.

Hierarchical Ti3 C2 Tx MXene/Carbon Nanotubes Hollow Microsphere with Confined Magnetic Nanospheres for Broadband Microwave Absorption

Hierarchical hollow structure with unique interfacial properties holds great potential for microwave absorption (MA). Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene has been a hot topic due to rich interface structure, abundant defects, and functional groups. However, its overhigh permittivity and poor aggregation-resistance limit the further application. Herein, a hierarchical MXene-based hollow microsphere is prepared via a facile spray drying strategy. Within the microsphere, few-layered MXene nanosheets are separated by dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs), exposing abundant dielectric polarization interfaces. Besides, numerous magnetic Fe₃ O₄ nanospheres are uniformly dispersed and confined within nano-cavities between 1D network and 2D framework. Such a novel structure simultaneously promotes interfacial polarization by ternary MXene/CNTs/Fe₃ O₄ interfaces, enhances magnetic loss by microscale and nanoscale coupling network, enlarges conduction loss by MXene/CNTs dual-network, and optimizes impedance matching by hierarchical porous structure. Therefore, Fe₃ O₄ @Ti₃ C₂ T_x /CNTs composite achieves excellent MA property with a maximum reflection loss of -40.1 dB and an effective bandwidth of 5.8 GHz at the thickness of only 2 mm. This work demonstrates a feasible hierarchical structure design strategy for multi-dimension MXene composite to realize the high-efficiency MA performance.
