Red Phosphorus Decorated TiO2 Nanorod Mediated Photodynamic and Photothermal Therapy for Renal Cell Carcinoma

Black Titania Janus Mesoporous Nanomotor for Enhanced Tumor Penetration and Near-Infrared Light-Triggered Photodynamic Therapy

Thanks to their excellent photoelectric characteristics to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) under the light-activation process, TiO2 nanomaterials have shown significant potential in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for solid tumors. Nevertheless, the limited penetration depth of TiO2-based photosensitizers and excitation sources (UV/visible light) for PDT remains a formidable challenge when confronted with complex tumor microenvironments (TMEs). Here, we present a H2O2-driven black TiO2 mesoporous nanomotor with near-infrared (NIR) light absorption capability and autonomous navigation ability, which effectively enhances solid tumor penetration in NIR light-triggered PDT. The nanomotor was rationally designed and fabricated based on the Janus mesoporous nanostructure, which consists of a NIR light-responsive black TiO2 nanosphere and an enzyme-modified periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) nanorod that wraps around the TiO2 nanosphere. The overexpressed H2O2 can drive the nanomotor in the TME under catalysis of catalase in the PMO domain. By precisely controlling the ratio of TiO2 and PMO compartments in the Janus nanostructure, TiO2&PMO nanomotors can achieve optimal self-propulsive directionality and velocity, enhancing cellular uptake and facilitating deep tumor penetration. Additionally, by the decomposition of endogenous H2O2 within solid tumors, these nanomotors can continuously supply oxygen to enable highly efficient ROS production under the NIR photocatalysis of black TiO2, leading to intensified PDT effects and effective tumor inhibition.

Ternary heterostructure-driven photoinduced electron-hole separation enhanced oxidative stress for triple-negative breast cancer therapy

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) stand as among the most significant metal oxide nanoparticles in trigger the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induce apoptosis. Nevertheless, the utilization of ZnO NPs has been limited by the shallowness of short-wavelength light and the constrained production of ROS. To overcome these limitations, a strategy involves achieving a red shift towards the near-infrared (NIR) light spectrum, promoting the separation and restraining the recombination of electron-hole (e--h+) pairs. Herein, the hybrid plasmonic system Au@ZnO (AZ) with graphene quantum dots (GQDs) doping (AZG) nano heterostructures is rationally designed for optimal NIR-driven cancer treatment. Significantly, a multifold increase in ROS generation can be achieved through the following creative initiatives: (i) plasmonic Au nanorods expands the photocatalytic capabilities of AZG into the NIR domain, offering a foundation for NIR-induced ROS generation for clinical utilization; (ii) elaborate design of mesoporous core-shell AZ structures facilitates the redistribution of electron-hole pairs; (iii) the incorporation GQDs in mesoporous structure could efficiently restrain the recombination of the e--h+ pairs; (iv) Modification of hyaluronic acid (HA) can enhance CD44 receptor mediated targeted triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). In addition, the introduced Au NRs present as catalysts for enhancing photothermal therapy (PTT), effectively inducing apoptosis in tumor cells. The resulting HA-modified AZG (AZGH) exhibits efficient hot electron injection and e--h+ separation, affording unparalleled convenience for ROS production and enabling NIR-induced PDT for the cancer treanment. As a result, our well-designed mesoporous core-shell AZGH hybrid as photosensitizers can exhibit excellent PDT efficacy.

Vaporization phosphorization-mediated synthesis of phosphorus-doped TiO2 nanocomposites for combined photodynamic and photothermal therapy of renal cell carcinoma

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a disease with high incidence and poor prognosis. The conventional treatment involves radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but chemotherapeutic agents are often associated with side effects, i.e., cytotoxicity to nontumor cells. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of novel therapeutic strategies for ccRCC. We synthesized spherical P/TiO2 nanoparticles (P/TiO2 NPs) by vaporization phosphorization (VP). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) analyses confirmed that the anatase TiO2 surface was successfully doped with phosphorus and produced a large number of oxygen vacancies (OV). Serving as a photosensitizer, P/TiO2 NPs not only extended the photoresponse range to the near-infrared II region (NIR II) but also introduced a donor energy level lower than the TiO2 conduction band, narrowing the band gap, which could facilitate the migration of photogenerated charges and trigger the synergistic treatment of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT). During NIR irradiation in vitro, the P/TiO2 NPs generated local heat and various oxygen radicals, including 1O2, ˙O2-, H2O2, and ˙OH, which damaged the ccRCC cells. In vivo, administration of the P/TiO2 NPs + NIR reduced the tumor volume by 80%, and had the potential to inhibit tumor metastasis by suppressing intratumor neoangiogenesis. The P/TiO2 NPs showed superior safety and efficacy relative to the conventional chemotherapeutic agent used in ccRCC treatment. This study introduced an innovative paradigm for renal cancer treatment, highlighting the potential of P/TiO2 NPs as safe and effective nanomaterials and presenting a compelling new option for clinical applications in anticancer therapy.

ROS Scavenging Nanozyme Modulates Immunosuppression for Sensitized Cancer Immunotherapy

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), two immunosuppressive myeloid components within the tumor microenvironment (TME), represent fundamental barriers in cancer immunotherapy, whereas current nanomedicines rarely exert dual modulatory roles on these cell types simultaneously. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) not only mediates MDSC-induced immunosuppression but also triggers differentiation and polarization of M2-TAMs. Herein, an ROS scavenging nanozyme, Zr-CeO, with enhanced superoxide dismutase- and catalase-like activities for renal tumor growth inhibition is reported. Mechanistically, intracellular ROS scavenging by Zr-CeO significantly attenuates MDSC immunosuppression via dampening the unfolded protein response, hinders M2-TAM polarization through the ERK and STAT3 pathways, but barely affects neoplastic cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts. Furthermore, Zr-CeO enhances the antitumor effect of PD-1 inhibition in murine renal and breast tumor models, accompanied with substantially decreased MDSC recruitment and reprogrammed phenotype of TAMs in the tumor mass. Upon cell isolation, reversed immunosuppressive phenotypes of MDSCs and TAMs are identified. In addition, Zr-CeO alone or combination therapy enhances T lymphocyte infiltration and IFN-γ production within the TME. Collectively, a promising strategy to impair the quantity and function of immunosuppressive myeloid cells and sensitize immunotherapy in both renal and breast cancers is provided.

Recent advances in lanthanide-doped up-conversion probes for theranostics

Up-conversion (or anti-Stokes) luminescence refers to the phenomenon whereby materials emit high energy, short-wavelength light upon excitation at longer wavelengths. Lanthanide-doped up-conversion nanoparticles (Ln-UCNPs) are widely used in biomedicine due to their excellent physical and chemical properties such as high penetration depth, low damage threshold and light conversion ability. Here, the latest developments in the synthesis and application of Ln-UCNPs are reviewed. First, methods used to synthesize Ln-UCNPs are introduced, and four strategies for enhancing up-conversion luminescence are analyzed, followed by an overview of the applications in phototherapy, bioimaging and biosensing. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of Ln-UCNPs are summarized.

One-Pot Synthesis of Bi2 S3 /TiO2 /rGO Heterostructure with Red Light-Driven Photovoltaic Effect for Remote Electrotherapy-Assisted Wound Repair

The past decades have witnessed the rational design of novel functional nanomaterials and the potential to revolutionize many applications. With the increasing focus on electronic biological processes, novel photovoltaic nanomaterials are highly expectable for empowering new therapeutic strategies such as establishing a link between endogenous electric field (EEF) and electrotherapy. Compared to traditional invasive stimulation, the light-initiating strategy has the advantages of non-invasion, non-power supply, and precise controllability. Whereas, common photoactivated materials require short-wavelength light excitation accompanied by poor tissue penetration and biohazard. Herein, by the construction of p-n heterostructured Bi₂ S₃ /TiO₂ /rGO (BTG) nanoparticles, broadener light absorption and higher light conversion than regular UV excitation are realized. Simultaneously, the photoelectric performance of BTG heterostructure, as well as the synergistic effect of Bi₂ S₃ morphology, are revealed. Besides, the rationally designed biomimetic hydrogel matrix consisting of collagen and hyaluronic acid provides appropriate bioactivity, interface adhesion, mechanical matching, and electron transfer. Therefore, the photovoltaic BTG-loaded matrix provides a platform of light-driven electrical stimulation, coupling the EEF to modulate the electrophysiological and regeneration microenvironment. The implementation of photoelectric stimulation holds broad prospects for non-drug therapy and electrical-related biological process modulation including osseointegration, nerve regeneration, electronic skin, and wound healing.

Photo-Responded Antibacterial Therapy of Reinfection in Percutaneous Implants by Nanostructured Bio-Heterojunction

Percutaneous implants may experience infection for several times during their servicing periods. They need antibacterial activity and durability to reduce recurrent infection and cytocompatibility to reconstruct biosealing. A novel photoresponse bio-heterojunction (PCT) is developed herein. It consists of TiO₂ nanotubes loaded with CuS nanoparticles and wrapped with polydopamine (PDA) layer. In PCT, a built-in electric field directing from TiO₂ to CuS and then to PDA is formed, and with near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, it drives photoexcited electrons to transfer in opposite direction, resulting in the separation of electron-hole pairs and formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Simultaneously, PCT shows photothermal effect due to nonradiative relaxation of photoexcited electrons and thermal vibration of lattices. The synergic effect of photogenerated ROS and hyperthermia increases bacterial membrane permeability and leakage of cellular components, endowing PCT with outstanding antibacterial performance. More importantly, PCT has good antibacterial durability and cytocompatibility due to the inhibited leaching of CuS by PDA layer. In reinfected models, with NIR irradiation, PCT sterilizes bacteria, reduces inflammatory response and enhances re-integration of soft tissue efficiently. This work provides an outstanding bio-heterojunction for percutaneous implants in treating reinfection by NIR irradiation and rebuilding biosealing.

Photothermal Hydrogels for Promoting Infected Wound Healing

Photothermal therapies (PTT), with spatiotemporally controllable antibacterial capabilities without inducing resistance, have shown encouraging prospects in the field of infected wound treatments. As an important platform for PTT, photothermal hydrogels exhibit attractive advantages in the field of infected wound treatment due to their excellent biochemical properties and have been intensively explored in recent years. This review summarizes the progress of the photothermal hydrogels for promoting infected wound healing. Three major elements of photothermal hydrogels, i.e., photothermal materials, hydrogel matrix, and construction methods, are introduced. Furthermore, different strategies of photothermal hydrogels in the treatment of infected wounds are summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the clinical treatment of photothermal hydrogels are discussed.

Nanomedicine for renal cell carcinoma: imaging, treatment and beyond

The kidney is a vital organ responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the human body. However, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a common malignancy of the urinary system and represents a serious threat to human health. Although the overall survival of RCC has improved substantially with the development of cancer diagnosis and management, there are various reasons for treatment failure. Firstly, without any readily available biomarkers, timely diagnosis has been greatly hampered. Secondly, the imaging appearance also varies greatly, and its early detection often remains difficult. Thirdly, chemotherapy has been validated as unavailable for treating renal cancer in the clinic due to its intrinsic drug resistance. Concomitant with the progress of nanotechnological methods in pharmaceuticals, the management of kidney cancer has undergone a transformation in the recent decade. Nanotechnology has shown many advantages over widely used traditional methods, leading to broad biomedical applications ranging from drug delivery, prevention, diagnosis to treatment. This review focuses on nanotechnologies in RCC management and further discusses their biomedical translation with the aim of identifying the most promising nanomedicines for clinical needs. As our understanding of nanotechnologies continues to grow, more opportunities to improve the management of renal cancer are expected to emerge.

Innovative strategies for photodynamic therapy against hypoxic tumor

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is applied as a robust therapeutic option for tumor, which exhibits some advantages of unique selectivity and irreversible damage to tumor cells. Among which, photosensitizer (PS), appropriate laser irradiation and oxygen (O₂) are three essential components for PDT, but the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME) restricts the O₂ supply in tumor tissues. Even worse, tumor metastasis and drug resistance frequently happen under hypoxic condition, which further deteriorate the antitumor effect of PDT. To enhance the PDT efficiency, critical attention has been received by relieving tumor hypoxia, and innovative strategies on this topic continue to emerge. Traditionally, the O₂ supplement strategy is considered as a direct and effective strategy to relieve TME, whereas it is confronted with great challenges for continuous O₂ supply. Recently, O₂-independent PDT provides a brand new strategy to enhance the antitumor efficiency, which can avoid the influence of TME. In addition, PDT can synergize with other antitumor strategies, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, photothermal therapy (PTT) and starvation therapy, to remedy the inadequate PDT effect under hypoxia conditions. In this paper, we summarized the latest progresses in the development of innovative strategies to improve PDT efficacy against hypoxic tumor, which were classified into O₂-dependent PDT, O₂-independent PDT and synergistic therapy. Furthermore, the advantages and deficiencies of various strategies were also discussed to envisage the prospects and challenges in future study.

Red Phosphorus/P25 Nanophotosensitizers Coated with Platelet Membrane for Enhancing Cancer Cells Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which uses targeted photosensitizing drugs, has been regarded as a promising method for cancer therapy. In the present study, photosensitizer red phosphorus modified P25 nanophotosensitizers (P25-RP) were generated, which were coated with platelet membrane (P25-RP@PLT) extracted from platelet rich plasma. The biocompatibility of P25-RP was demonstrated by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and optical microscope assay, more than 93 % cells in the concentration of 100 μg/ml of P25-RP suspension after co-incubation for 24 h were still kept alive. The antitumor performance of P25-RP@PLT was evaluated via CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry and fluorescence staining of live/dead cells. The experiment results showed that P25-RP@PLT could ablate 55 % malignant tumor cells upon laser irradiation within 5 min, which was 10 % higher than P25-RP alone against cancer cells. Mechanistically, the cancer cell toxicity of P25-RP@PLT nanophotosensitizers was attributed to its heterojunction structure that broadens the absorption spectra, whereas PLT membrane coating technology allows for immune escape and selective adhesion capacity to cancer cells. This work provided a novel pathway on the design of novel visible-light-driven photosensitizer for cancer therapy.

Injectable Carbon Dots-Based Hydrogel for Combined Photothermal Therapy and Photodynamic Therapy of Cancer

Hydrogel has been widely used in modern biotherapeutics due to its excellent biocompatibility, degradability, and high drug loading capacity. Among them, the construction of a phototherapy system including photosensitizer and hydrogel has aroused great interest in tumor therapy. Unfortunately, complex modifications are necessary to integrate different photosensitizers into the hydrogel. In this work, an injectable hydrogel was proposed by the Schiff base reaction between HA-CHO and carbon dots (CDs), which can realize PTT and PTT simultaneously. Notably, the CDs with rich -NH2 can be used not only as a photosensitizer but also as an efficient cross-linking agent for the Schiff base reaction to form a hydrogel network. The CD@Hydrogel with outstanding biosafety showed a high antitumor effect after 660 nm laser irradiation in in vitro and in vivo experiments. In summary, the CD@Hydrogel can not only realize PTT and PDT synergistic treatment under one light source but also act as a cross-linking agent to react with HA-CHO to form hydrogel, which is simple and efficient, providing a new strategy for cancer phototherapy.

Emerging photodynamic/sonodynamic therapies for urological cancers: progress and challenges

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) that developed from PDT, have been studied for decades to treat solid tumors. Compared with other deep tumors, the accessibility of urological tumors (e.g., bladder tumor and prostate tumor) makes them more suitable for PDT/SDT that requires exogenous stimulation. Due to the introduction of nanobiotechnology, emerging photo/sonosensitizers modified with different functional components and improved physicochemical properties have many outstanding advantages in cancer treatment compared with traditional photo/sonosensitizers, such as alleviating hypoxia to improve quantum yield, passive/active tumor targeting to increase drug accumulation, and combination with other therapeutic modalities (e.g., chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy) to achieve synergistic therapy. As WST11 (TOOKAD® soluble) is currently clinically approved for the treatment of prostate cancer, emerging photo/sonosensitizers have great potential for clinical translation, which requires multidisciplinary participation and extensive clinical trials. Herein, the latest research advances of newly developed photo/sonosensitizers for the treatment of urological cancers, and the efficacy, as well as potential biological effects, are highlighted. In addition, the clinical status of PDT/SDT for urological cancers is presented, and the optimization of the photo/sonosensitizer development procedure for clinical translation is discussed.

Vacancy defect-promoted nanomaterials for efficient phototherapy and phototherapy-based multimodal Synergistic Therapy

Phototherapy and multimodal synergistic phototherapy (including synergistic photothermal and photodynamic therapy as well as combined phototherapy and other therapies) are promising to achieve accurate diagnosis and efficient treatment for tumor, providing a novel opportunity to overcome cancer. Notably, various nanomaterials have made significant contributions to phototherapy through both improving therapeutic efficiency and reducing side effects. The most key factor affecting the performance of phototherapeutic nanomaterials is their microstructure which in principle determines their physicochemical properties and the resulting phototherapeutic efficiency. Vacancy defects ubiquitously existing in phototherapeutic nanomaterials have a great influence on their microstructure, and constructing and regulating vacancy defect in phototherapeutic nanomaterials is an essential and effective strategy for modulating their microstructure and improving their phototherapeutic efficacy. Thus, this inspires growing research interest in vacancy engineering strategies and vacancy-engineered nanomaterials for phototherapy. In this review, we summarize the understanding, construction, and application of vacancy defects in phototherapeutic nanomaterials. Starting from the perspective of defect chemistry and engineering, we also review the types, structural features, and properties of vacancy defects in phototherapeutic nanomaterials. Finally, we focus on the representative vacancy defective nanomaterials recently developed through vacancy engineering for phototherapy, and discuss the significant influence and role of vacancy defects on phototherapy and multimodal synergistic phototherapy. Therefore, we sincerely hope that this review can provide a profound understanding and inspiration for the design of advanced phototherapeutic nanomaterials, and significantly promote the development of the efficient therapies against tumor.

Engineered organosilica hybrid micelles for photothermal-enhanced starvation cancer therapy

Glucose oxidase (GOD)-based starvation therapy (ST), which inhibits the growth and proliferation of cancer cells by consuming glucose, has attracted intensive attention as an emerging non-invasive method for fighting cancers. However, the enzyme activity of GOD is greatly limited in vivo because of its optimal catalytic activity in the temperature range of 43-60 °C. Herein, a photothermal-enhanced starvation strategy is developed based on our engineered organosilica hybrid micelles (TiO 2-x @POMs-GOD), in which the fluoride-doped TiO 2-x with photothermal properties is encapsulated in the cores of organosilica cross-linked micelles and GOD is immobilized on the carboxyl groups of PAA segments. With its internalization by cancer cells, the conjugated GOD can effectively deplete glucose to achieve the ST effect, which can be remarkably enhanced by the loaded fluoride-doped TiO 2-x with NIR laser irradiation, thus cooperatively contributing to the efficient treatment of TiO 2-x @POMs-GOD on various cancer cells. This suggests great potentials for TiO 2-x @POMs-GOD in photothermal-enhanced ST in vivo.

Pt-Modified Interfacial Engineering for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance of 3D Ordered Macroporous TiO2

Narrowing the band gap and increasing the photodegradation efficiency of TiO2-based photocatalysts are very important for their wide application in environment-related fields such as photocatalytic degradation of toxic pollutants in wastewater. Herein, a three-dimensionally ordered macroporous Pt-loaded TiO2 photocatalyst (3DOM Pt/TiO2) has been successfully synthesized using a facile colloidal crystal-template method. The resultant composite combines several morphological/structural advantages, including uniform 3D ordered macroporous skeletons, high crystallinity, large porosity and an internal electric field formed at Pt/TiO2 interfaces. These unique features enable the 3DOM Pt/TiO2 to possess a large surface for photocatalytic reactions and fast diffusion for mass transfer of reactants as well as efficient suppression of recombination for photogenerated electron-hole pairs in TiO2. Thus, the 3DOM Pt/TiO2 exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity. Typically, 88% of RhB can be degraded over the 3DOM Pt/TiO2 photocatalyst under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) within 100 min, much higher than that of the commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (only 37%). The underlying mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of 3DOM Pt/TiO2 has been further analyzed based on energy band theory and ascribed to the formation of Schottky-type Pt/TiO2 junctions. The proposed method herein can provide new references for further improving the photocatalytic efficiency of other photocatalysts via rational structural/morphological engineering.

Recent Advance of Nanomaterial-Mediated Tumor Therapies in the Past Five Years

Cancer has posed a major threat to human life and health with a rapidly increasing number of patients. The complexity and refractory of tumors have brought great challenges to tumor treatment. In recent years, nanomaterials and nanotechnology have attracted more attention and greatly improved the efficiency of tumor therapies and significantly prolonged the survival period, whether for traditional tumor treatment methods such as radiotherapy, or emerging methods, such as phototherapy and immunotherapy, sonodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy and RNA interference therapeutics. Various monotherapies have obtained positive results, while combination therapies are further proposed to prevent incomplete eradication and recurrence of tumors, strengthen tumor killing efficacy with minimal side effects. In view of the complementary promotion effects between different therapies, it is vital to utilize nanomaterials as the link between monotherapies to achieve synergistic performance. Further development of nanomaterials with efficient tumor-killing effect and better biosafety is more in line with the needs of clinical treatment. In a word, the development of nanomaterials provides a promising way for tumor treatment, and here we will review the emerging nanomaterials towards radiotherapy, phototherapy and immunotherapy, and summarized the developed nanocarriers applied for the tumor combination therapies in the past 5 years, besides, the advances of some other novel therapies such as sonodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy, and RNA interference therapeutics have also been mentioned.

A Multifunctional Layered Nickel Silicate Nanogenerator of Synchronous Oxygen Self-supply and Superoxide Radical Generation for Hypoxic Tumor Therapy

Oxygen consumption but hypoxic tumor environment has been considered as the major obstacle in photodynamic therapy. Although oxygen-supplied strategies have been reported extensively, they still suffer from the complicated system and unsatisfied PDT efficiency. Herein, one-component layered nickel silicate nanoplatforms (LNS NPs) are successfully synthesized using natural vermiculite as the silica source, which can simultaneously supply oxygen (O₂) and generate superoxide radicals (O₂^-•) under near-infrared irradiation. The appropriate electron band structure endows LNS NPs with attractive optical properties, where the bandgap edges determine the performance of redox activity and spectral response characteristic. Evidenced by both in vitro and in vivo investigations, LNS NPs can generate sufficient superoxide radicals under 660 nm laser irradiation to induce tumor cell apoptosis even in a severe hypoxic environment, which benefits from self-supplied oxygen. Besides, the photoacoustic oxy-hem imaging and histologic assay further demonstrated that the generated oxygen can relieve the inherent intratumoral hypoxia. Therefore, LNS NPs not only serve as superoxide radical generator but also produce oxygen to modulate hypoxia, suggesting that it can be used for superoxide radical-mediated photodynamic therapy with enhanced antitumor effect.

Advances of Light/Ultrasound/Magnetic-Responsive Nanoprobes for Visualized Theranostics of Urinary Tumors

Light/ultrasound/magnetic-responsive nanomaterials exhibit excellent performance in imaging and therapy and play an important role in precision theranostics of tumors. In contrast to deep organs, urinary organs (such as bladder and prostate) can easily be studied via intervention mode, which has greatly brought promising applications of stimuli-responsive nanoprobes in visualized theranostics of urinary tumors. Therefore, it has been very critical to develop stimuli-responsive nanoprobes with high safety, stability, and reliability against urinary tumors. In this review, recent advances in light/ultrasound/magnetic-responsive nanoprobes in visualized theranostics of urinary tumors are summarized, including magnetic resonance/fluorescence/ultrasound/photoacoustic imaging and multimodal imaging, photothermal/photodynamic/sonodynamic therapy and combination therapy, and single-modal/multimodal-imaging-guided visualized theranostics. Finally, the future perspectives of light/ultrasound/magnetic-responsive nanoprobes against urinary tumors are also prospected.

One-dimensional cobalt oxide nanotubes with rich defect for oxygen evolution reaction

For the electrochemcial hydrogen production, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a pivotal half-reaction in water splitting. However, OER suffers sluggish kinetics and high overpotential, leading to the increase of overall energy consumption and decrease of the energy efficiency. In this work, high-quality cobalt oxide porous nanotubes (Co₃O₄-PNTs) are easily obtained by simple self-template approach. One-dimensional (1D) porous structure provides the large specific surface area, enough abundant active atoms and effective mass transfer. In addition, Co₃O₄-PNTs also own self-stability of 1D architecture, benefitting the their durability for electrocatalytic reaction. Thus, Co₃O₄-PNTs with optimal annealing temperature and time reveal the attractive alkaline OER performance (Tafel slope of 56 mV dec^-1and 323 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm^-2), which outperform the Co₃O₄nanoparticles and benchmark commercial RuO₂nanoparticles. Furthermore, Co₃O₄-PNTs also exhibit excellent OER durability for least 10 h at the 10 mA cm^-2. Overall, Co₃O₄-PNTs with low cost can be serve as a highly reactive and economical catalyst for OER.
