Design and Synthesis of Noble Metal-Based Alloy Electrocatalysts and Their Application in Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Well-defined ternary metal phosphide nanowires with stabilized Pt nanoclusters to boost alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Designing low-content and high-activity Pt-based catalysts with the high durability for the electrochemical hydrogen production remains a challenge. In this study, a ternary metal phosphide (NiCoP) with 1D nanowire (NW) and 2D nanosheet (NS) morphologies incorporating Pt clusters (denoted as Ptcluster-NiCoP@NF NWs and Ptcluster-NiCoP@NF NSs, respectively) was prepared using a hydrothermal-phosphorization-electrodeposition method. Based on the "tip effect" of NWs and a high electrochemical surface area, the as-prepared Ptcluster-NiCoP@NF NWs display better hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, with a low overpotential of 65 mV at a high current density of 100 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 38.86 mV dec-1, than the Ptcluster-NiCoP@NF NSs, with an overportential of 95 mV at 42.53 mV dec-1. This indicates that the NiCoP NW-based support exhibits faster HER kinetics. The mass activity (11.47 A mgPt-1) of the Ptcluster-NiCoP@NF NWs is higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. Significantly, the Ptcluster-NiCoP@NF NWs display excellent cyclic stability with negligible losses for 5000 cycles and 30-h tests at a high current of 500 mA cm-2.

Material Engineering Strategies for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Catalysts

Water electrolysis, a key enabler of hydrogen energy production, presents significant potential as a strategy for achieving net-zero emissions. However, the widespread deployment of water electrolysis is currently limited by the high-cost and scarce noble metal electrocatalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Given this challenge, design and synthesis of cost-effective and high-performance alternative catalysts have become a research focus, which necessitates insightful understandings of HER fundamentals and material engineering strategies. Distinct from typical reviews that concentrate only on the summary of recent catalyst materials, this review article shifts focus to material engineering strategies for developing efficient HER catalysts. In-depth analysis of key material design approaches for HER catalysts, such as doping, vacancy defect creation, phase engineering, and metal-support engineering, are illustrated along with typical research cases. A special emphasis is placed on designing noble metal-free catalysts with a brief discussion on recent advancements in electrocatalytic water-splitting technology. The article also delves into important descriptors, reliable evaluation parameters and characterization techniques, aiming to link the fundamental mechanisms of HER with its catalytic performance. In conclusion, it explores future trends in HER catalysts by integrating theoretical, experimental and industrial perspectives, while acknowledging the challenges that remain.

Enhanced Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction via Electronic Structure Regulation: Activating PtRh with Rare Earth Tm Alloying

Developing high-performance electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for producing green hydrogen, yet it remains challenging due to the sluggish kinetics in alkaline environments. Pt is located near the peak of HER volcano plot, owing to its exceptional performance in hydrogen adsorption and desorption, and Rh plays an important role in H2O dissociation. Lanthanides (Ln) are commonly used to modulate the electronic structure of materials and further influence the adsorption/desorption of reactants, intermediates, and products, and noble metal-Ln alloys are recognized as effective platforms where Ln elements regulate the catalytic properties of noble metals. Here Pt1.5Rh1.5Tm alloy is synthesized using the sodium vapor reduction method. This alloy demonstrates superior catalytic activity, being 4.4 and 6.6 times more effective than Pt/C and Rh/C, respectively. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the upshift of d-band center and the charge transfer induced by alloying promote adsorption and dissociation of H2O, making Pt1.5Rh1.5Tm alloy more favorable for the alkaline HER reaction, both kinetically and thermodynamically.

Ru/Ir-Based Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Conditions: From Mechanisms, Optimizations to Challenges

The generation of green hydrogen by water splitting is identified as a key strategic energy technology, and proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is one of the desirable technologies for converting renewable energy sources into hydrogen. However, the harsh anode environment of PEMWE and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involving four-electron transfer result in a large overpotential, which limits the overall efficiency of hydrogen production, and thus efficient electrocatalysts are needed to overcome the high overpotential and slow kinetic process. In recent years, noble metal-based electrocatalysts (e.g., Ru/Ir-based metal/oxide electrocatalysts) have received much attention due to their unique catalytic properties, and have already become the dominant electrocatalysts for the acidic OER process and are applied in commercial PEMWE devices. However, these noble metal-based electrocatalysts still face the thorny problem of conflicting performance and cost. In this review, first, noble metal Ru/Ir-based OER electrocatalysts are briefly classified according to their forms of existence, and the OER catalytic mechanisms are outlined. Then, the focus is on summarizing the improvement strategies of Ru/Ir-based OER electrocatalysts with respect to their activity and stability over recent years. Finally, the challenges and development prospects of noble metal-based OER electrocatalysts are discussed.

Tungstate Intercalated NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide Enables Long-Term Alkaline Seawater Oxidation

Renewable electricity-driven seawater splitting presents a green, effective, and promising strategy for building hydrogen (H2 )-based energy systems (e.g., storing wind power as H2 ), especially in many coastal cities. The abundance of Cl- in seawater, however, will cause severe corrosion of anode catalyst during the seawater electrolysis, and thus affect the long-term stability of the catalyst. Herein, seawater oxidation performances of NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDH), a classic oxygen (O2 ) evolution material, can be boosted by employing tungstate (WO4 2- ) as the intercalated guest. Notably, insertion of WO4 2- to LDH layers upgrades the reaction kinetics and selectivity, attaining higher current densities with ≈100% O2 generation efficiency in alkaline seawater. Moreover, after a 350 h test at 1000 mA cm-2 , only trace active chlorine can be detected in the electrolyte. Additionally, O2 evolution follows lattice oxygen mechanism on NiFe LDH with intercalated WO4 2- .

Insights of the efficient hydrogen evolution reaction performance in bimetallic Au4Cu2 nanoclusters

The design of efficient electrocatalysts for improving hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance using atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) is an emerging area of research. Here, we have studied the HER electrocatalytic performance of monometallic Cu6 and Au6 nanoclusters and bimetallic Au4Cu2 nanoclusters. A bimetallic Au4Cu2/MoS2 composite exhibits excellent HER catalytic activity with an overpotential (η10) of 155 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode observed at 10 mA cm-2 current density. The improved HER performance in Au4Cu2 is due to the increased electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), and Au4Cu2 NCs exhibits better stability than Cu6 and Au6 systems and bare MoS2. This augmentation offers a greater number of active sites for the favorable adsorption of reaction intermediates. Furthermore, by employing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman analysis, the kinetics of HER in the Au4Cu2/MoS2 composite were elucidated, attributing the favorable performance to better electronic interactions occurring at the interface between Au4Cu2 NCs and the MoS2 substrate. Theoretical analysis reveals that the inherent catalytic enhancement in Au4Cu2/MoS2 is due to favorable H atom adsorption over it and the smallest ΔGH* value. The downshift in the d-band of the Au4Cu2/MoS2 composite influences the binding energy of intermediate catalytic species. This new catalyst sheds light on the structure-property relationship for improving electrocatalytic performance at the atomic level.

Engineering Electronic Structure of Nitrogen-Carbon Sites by sp3 -Hybridized Carbon and Incorporating Chlorine to Boost Oxygen Reduction Activity

Development of efficient and easy-to-prepare low-cost oxygen reaction electrocatalysts is essential for widespread application of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we mixed NaCl and ZIF-8 by simple physical milling and pyrolysis to obtain a metal-free porous electrocatalyst doped with Cl (mf-pClNC). The mf-pClNC electrocatalyst exhibits a good oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity (E1/2 =0.91 V vs. RHE) and high stability in alkaline electrolyte, exceeding most of the reported transition metal carbon-based electrocatalysts and being comparable to commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts. Likewise, the mf-pClNC electrocatalyst also shows state-of-the-art ORR activity and stability in acidic electrolyte. From experimental and theoretical calculations, the better ORR activity is most likely originated from the fact that the introduced Cl promotes the increase of sp3 -hybridized carbon, while the sp3 -hybridized carbon and Cl together modify the electronic structure of the N-adjacent carbons, as the active sites, while NaCl molten-salt etching provides abundant paths for the transport of electrons/protons. Furthermore, the liquid rechargeable ZAB using the mf-pClNC electrocatalyst as the cathode shows a fulfilling performance with a peak power density of 276.88 mW cm-2 . Flexible quasi-solid-state rechargeable ZAB constructed with the mf-pClNC electrocatalyst as the cathode exhibits an exciting performance both at low, high and room temperatures.

Recent Advances on Single-Atom Catalysts for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The present energy crisis and environmental challenges may be efficiently resolved by converting carbon dioxide (CO2 ) into various useful carbon products. The development of more effective catalysts has been the main focus of current research on photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Due to their high atomic efficiency and superior catalytic activity, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable interest in catalytic CO2 conversion. This review discusses the current research developments, obstacles, and potential of SACs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. And further, discusses the principle of photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction. This work has compared and analyzed the effects of support materials and active site types in SACs on photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. This work believes that by sharing these developments, some inspiration for the rational design and development of stable and effective photocatalytic CO2 reduction catalysts based on SACs can be provided.

Investigating the Structural Evolution and Catalytic Activity of c-Co/Co3Mo Electrocatalysts for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Transition metal alloys have emerged as promising electrocatalysts due to their ability to modulate key parameters, such as d-band electron filling, Fermi level energy, and interatomic spacing, thereby influencing their affinity towards reaction intermediates. However, the structural stability of alloy electrocatalysts during the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a subject of debate. In this study, we systematically investigated the structural evolution and catalytic activity of the c-Co/Co3Mo electrocatalyst under alkaline HER conditions. Our findings reveal that the Co3Mo alloy and H0.9MoO3 exhibit instability during alkaline HER, leading to the breakdown of the crystal structure. As a result, the cubic phase c-Co undergoes a conversion to the hexagonal phase h-Co, which exhibits strong catalytic activity. Additionally, we identified hexagonal phase Co(OH)2 as an intermediate product of this conversion process. Furthermore, we explored the readsorption and surface coordination of the Mo element, which contribute to the enhanced catalytic activity of the c-Co/Co3Mo catalyst in alkaline HER. This work provides valuable insights into the dynamic behavior of alloy-based electrocatalysts, shedding light on their structural stability and catalytic activity during electrochemical reduction processes.
