Pseudocapacitive Storage in Molybdenum Oxynitride Nanostructures Reactively Sputtered on Stainless-Steel Mesh Towards an All-Solid-State Flexible Supercapacitor

Thin and Flexible PANI/PMMA/CNF Forest Films Produced via a Two-Step Floating Catalyst Chemical Vapor Deposition

In this paper, we explore a straightforward two-step method to produce high-purity, vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanofibres (MWCNFs) via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Two distinct solutions are utilized for this CVD method: a catalytic solution consisting of ferrocene and acetonitrile (ACN) and a carbon source solution with camphor and ACN. The vapors of the catalytic solution inserted in the reaction chamber through external boiling result in a floating catalyst CVD approach that produces vertically aligned CNFs in a consistent manner. CNFs are grown in a conventional CVD horizontal reactor at 850 °C under atmospheric pressure and characterized by Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Coating the MWCNTs with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) while still on the Si substrate retains the structure and results in a flexible, conductive thin film suitable for flexible electrodes. The film is 62 μm thick and stable in aqueous solutions, capable of withstanding further processing, such as electropolymerization with polyaniline, to be used for energy storage applications.

Stainless Steel Mesh in Electrochemistry: Comprehensive Applications and Future Prospects

Stainless steel mesh (SSM) has emerged as a cornerstone in electrochemical applications owing to its exemplary versatility, electrical conductivity, mechanical robustness, and corrosion resistance. This state-of-the-art review delves into the diverse roles of SSM across a spectrum of electrochemical domains, including energy conversion and storage devices, water treatment technologies, electrochemical sensors, and catalysis. We meticulously explore its deployment in supercapacitors, batteries, and fuel cells, highlighting its utility as a current collector, electrode, and separator. The review further discusses the critical significance of SSM in water treatment processes, emphasizing its efficacy in supporting membranes and facilitating electrocoagulation, as well as its novel uses in electrochemical sensing and catalysis, which include electrosynthesis and bioelectrochemistry. Each section delineates the recent advancements, identifies the inherent challenges, and suggests future directions for leveraging SSM in electrochemical technologies. This comprehensive review showcases the current state of knowledge and articulates the novel integration of SSM with emerging materials and technologies, thereby establishing a new paradigm for sustainable and efficient electrochemical applications. Through critical analysis and insightful recommendations, this review positions itself as a seminal contribution, paving the way for researchers and practitioners to harness the full potential of SSM in advancing the electrochemistry frontiers.

Catalytic and Electrochemical Study of Cu-ZSM-5/MCM-41

Hierarchically structured micro-mesoporous ZSM-5/MCM-41 composite materials incorporating copper ions were synthesized using pre-synthesized ZSM-5 and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a template for forming the MCM-41 structure. The composites were characterized through powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction confirmed well-ordered ZSM-5 and MCM-41 structures, and UV-vis DRS showed successful copper ion incorporation. N2 adsorption-desorption revealed the presence of both microporous and mesoporous structures. To evaluate their catalytic performance, Cu-incorporated ZSM-5/MCM-41 composite catalysts were assessed through the oxidation reaction of ethylbenzene using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the oxidizing agent. With a 9% (w/w) Cu-ZM-5 (5 wt % copper-incorporated ZSM-5/MCM-41) catalyst and an oxidant to ethylbenzene molar ratio of 2:1 at 40 °C in the absence of a solvent for 4 h, the process yielded acetophenone (93.2%) as the major product. Additionally, these Cu-incorporated composites were examined as electrode materials for electrochemical storage. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge studies showed that Cu-ZM-5 exhibited pseudocapacitive behavior, with a capacitance of up to 366 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, surpassing ZSM-5 and ZSM-5/MCM-41. These results highlight Cu-ZM-5's potential as an effective electrode material for electrochemical storage applications like supercapacitors.

Pseudocapacitive Kinetics in Synergistically Coupled MoS2-Mo2N Nanowires with Enhanced Interfaces toward All-Solid-State Flexible Supercapacitors

Pseudocapacitive kinetics in rationally engineered nanostructures can deliver higher energy and power densities simultaneously. The present report reveals a high-performance all-solid-state flexible symmetric supercapacitor (FSSC) based on MoS2-Mo2N nanowires deposited directly on stainless steel mesh (MoS2-Mo2N/SSM) employing DC reactive magnetron co-sputtering technology. The abundance of synergistically coupled interfaces and junctions between MoS2 nanosheets and Mo2N nanostructures across the nanocomposite results in greater porosity, increased ionic conductivity, and superior electrical conductivity. Consequently, the FSSC device utilizing poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium sulfate (PVA-Na2SO4) hydrogel electrolyte renders an outstanding cell capacitance of 252.09 F·g-1 (44.12 mF·cm-2) at 0.25 mA·cm-2 and high rate performance within a wide 1.3 V window. Dunn's and b-value analysis reveals significant energy storage by surface-controlled capacitive and pseudocapacitive mechanisms. Remarkably, the symmetric device boosts tremendous energy density ∼10.36 μWh·cm-2 (59.17 Wh·kg-1), superb power density ∼6.5 mW·cm-2 (37.14 kW·kg-1), ultrastable long cyclability (∼93.7% after 10,000 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles), and impressive mechanical flexibility at 60°, 90°, and 120° bending angles.
