The Advance and Critical Functions of Energetic Carbon Dots in Carbon Dioxide Photo/Electroreduction Reactions

Boosting hydrogen evolution performance of nanofiber membrane-based composite photocatalysts with multifunctional carbon dots

Recent progress in the co-spinning of nanofibers and semiconductor particles offers a promising strategy for the development of photocatalytic devices, solving aggregation and catalyst recovery challenges. However, composite photocatalysts based on nanofiber membranes often suffer from poor conductivity, low hydrophilicity, and easy recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in the semiconductor components. Here, to tackle the aforementioned issues of ZnIn2S4/polyacrylonitrile (ZIS/PAN) nanofiber-based catalysts, we prepared a composite carbon dots/ZnIn2S4/polyacrylonitrile (CZP) nanofiber membrane by blending carbon dots (CDs) with ZIS/PAN using the electrospinning process. The hydrogen evolution performance of the CZP photocatalyst was significantly improved by CDs, which enhanced the hydrophilicity, increased the light absorption, facilitated the transfer of photogenerated electrons, and reduced the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Notably, the optimal CZP photocatalyst achieved a hydrogen evolution rate of 2250 μmol g-1h-1, which is about 23 % higher than that of the nanofiber membrane without CDs and 4.55 times higher than that of ZIS particles. The present work successfully improved the CZP nanofiber membrane of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance, and the membrane may benefit further device development by eliminating the need for stirring and simplifying the recovery process.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)/C-dots and covalent organic framework (COF)/C-dots hybrid nanocomposites: Fabrications and applications in sensing, medical, environmental, and energy sectors

Developing new hybrid materials is critical for addressing the current needs of the world in various fields, such as energy, sensing, health, hygiene, and others. C-dots are a member of the carbon nanomaterial family with numerous applications. Aggregation is one of the barriers to the performance of C-dots, which causes luminescence quenching, surface area decreases, etc. To improve the performance of C-dots, numerous matrices including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and polymers have been composited with C-dots. The porous crystalline structures, which are constituents of metal nodes and organic linkers (MOFs) or covalently attached organic units (COFs) provide privileged features such as high specific surface area, tunable structures, and pore diameters, modifiable surface, high thermal, mechanical, and chemical stabilities. Also, the MOFs and COFs protect the C-dots from the environment. Therefore, MOF/C-dots and COF/C-dots composites combine their features while retaining topological properties and improving performances. In this review, we first compare MOFs with COFs as matrices for C-dots. Then, the recent progress in developing hybrid MOFs/C-dots and COFs/C-dots composites has been discussed and their applications in various fields have been explained briefly.

Recent Progress in Surface-Defect Engineering Strategies for Electrocatalysts toward Electrochemical CO2 Reduction: A Review

Climate change, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, is one of the biggest threats to the world. As per the IEA report of 2021, global CO2 emissions amounted to around 31.5 Gt, which increased the atmospheric concentration of CO2 up to 412.5 ppm. Thus, there is an imperative demand for the development of new technologies to convert CO2 into value-added feedstock products such as alcohols, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, chemicals, and clean fuels. The intrinsic properties of the catalytic materials are the main factors influencing the efficiency of electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2-RR) reactions. Additionally, the electroreduction of CO2 is mainly affected by poor selectivity and large overpotential requirements. However, these issues can be overcome by modifying heterogeneous electrocatalysts to control their morphology, size, crystal facets, grain boundaries, and surface defects/vacancies. This article reviews the recent progress in electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions accomplished by surface-defective electrocatalysts and identifies significant research gaps for designing highly efficient electrocatalytic materials.
