Abstract
INTRODUCTION Postnatal management of ovarian cysts in neonates is debated. METHODS A retrospective analysis of neonates diagnosed with ovarian mass at a tertiary referral center (Jan 2014-May 2024). RESULTS 64 neonates (1 day-8 months; mean: 8.2 weeks) were diagnosed with 65 ovarian masses ≥ 20 mm (mean: 44.2 mm; range: 20-81 mm). Prematurity was present in 31% (n = 20). Primary surgery was performed in 11 cases due to severe symptoms/uncertain mass origin; 3 underwent percutaneous puncture; 50 were observed. Of these, 37/50 (74%) had cyst regression within 18 months, including 7 complex cysts (19%). Delayed involution occurred in 6/50 (12%) observed. Both complex morphology and larger cyst size were significantly associated with delayed regression (p = 0.0005, p = 0.0045, respectively). 8/50 (16%) underwent intervention for cyst enlargement (2 laparoscopies, 5 punctures) or concern for interval torsion (1 laparotomy). No confirmed postnatal torsion or hemorrhagic complications occurred in the observation group. One patient required a repeat procedure after percutaneous reduction. No significant association was found between lesion size and the symptoms of recent adnexal torsion (p = 0.99). CONCLUSIONS Observation is safe for asymptomatic ovarian cysts. Postnatal torsion is rare but can occur regardless of lesion size, including patients with no prior history of ovarian cysts.

Abstract
Intrauterine ovarian torsion with autoamputation (IOTA) in fetuses was uncommon. The vague and non-specific symptomatology of IOTA makes early diagnosis challenging. Potential complications, such as hemorrhagic infarction of the adnexal structures with the subsequent sequelae, may occur. Moreover, therapeutic options, such as conservative or surgical management, for IOTA remain uncertain in the literature. We report three cases of IOTA, two of which were complicated by peritoneal adhesion or spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, confirmed surgically and through laboratory studies. A suspected diagnosis of this uncommon condition was made preoperatively in two cases. Our case reports provided additional information about this rare condition, including the occurrence of complicated bacterial peritonitis, in neonates and infants with IOTA. A review of the literature on imaging diagnosis and management options for IOTA is also included.

Abstract
Fetal adnexal cysts present unique challenges during pregnancy, requiring careful management strategies to mitigate risks throughout gestation and delivery. We present the case of a 35-year-old G4P2 patient, referred to our center for a large adnexal cyst confirmed by ultrasound (US) and fetal MRI, with a calculated volume of 210 mL. Given the cyst's size and the family's strong preference for vaginal delivery (VD), US-guided aspiration was performed at 35 6/7 weeks, followed by an uncomplicated spontaneous VD at 37 2/7 weeks. Two weeks postpartum, the ovarian cyst re-accumulated, requiring laparoscopic-assisted cystectomy in a torsed but viable left ovary. This case demonstrates the importance of individualized prenatal care, where clinical decisions balance parental preferences with medical risks. Maximizing the opportunity for vaginal birth was a top priority for the family, and the successful reduction of the cyst's size through percutaneous aspiration minimized the risk of abdominal dystocia and allowed for a safe VD. We review relevant literature, emphasizing the need for further research to refine fetal intervention criteria and improve outcomes for such cases.

Abstract
The majority of abdominal masses in female children derive from the ovaries. Ovarian masses in pediatric populations can vary from simple functional cysts to malignant neoplasms. Their incidence, clinical presentation, and histological distribution vary across age groups. In the assessment of ovarian masses in children, the primary aim is to determine the probability of malignancy, as the treatment approaches for benign and malignant lesions are significantly distinct. The primary imaging tool for evaluating ovarian cysts and masses is ultrasound, which can assess the size, location, and characteristics of masses. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) may be used for further evaluation if ultrasound findings are inconclusive or if malignancy is suspected, especially in older adolescents. Serum markers may be considered in older adolescents to help assess the risk of malignancy, though it is less useful in younger populations due to normal developmental variations. Many functional ovarian cysts, especially those detected in fetuses or infants, often resolve spontaneously without intervention. Surgical intervention is indicated in cases of large cysts that cause symptoms, or if there are concerns for malignancy. Common procedures include primarily ovarian sparing laparoscopy or laparotomy. Complications like torsion, rupture, or hemorrhage may require urgent surgical intervention. Treatment should be performed in specialized centers to avoid unnecessary oophorectomies and ensure the best possible outcome for the patient. This comprehensive review aims to provide an overview of the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of ovarian masses in the pediatric population. Emphasis is placed on the particularities of the lesions and their management in relation to age subgroups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aim to evaluate the long-term outcomes of ovarian preserving surgery for neonatal ovarian cysts. METHOD The clinical data of neonatal ovarian cysts treated in our hospital from January 2015 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Our study included 22 patients, of which 21 were unilateral and 1 was bilateral. There were 13 cases of simple cysts and 9 cases of complex cysts, and one cyst changed from simple to complex. The mean largest diameter of simple cysts was 5.7 ± 2.1 cm, and that of complex cysts was 4.6 ± 2.0 cm. There was no significant difference between the two groups (P = .2264). Among the 22 patients, 21 underwent laparoscopic cystectomy. The only patient with bilateral cysts underwent percutaneous drainage of the right simple cyst. Twenty-one histological specimens were reviewed, of which 18 (85.7%) contained viable ovarian tissues. Five cases lost follow-up after surgery, and the remaining 17 cases had a follow-up period of 6 months to 5 years. The last ultrasound follow-up showed that 9 cases had bilateral normal ovaries, and 8 cases lost the ipsilateral ovary. The ovarian preservation rate of simple cyst was 90% (9/10), which was significantly higher than that of complex cyst (12.5%, 1/8) (P = .003). CONCLUSIONS Simple cysts (≥4 cm) had an excellent prognosis, with a long-term ovarian preservation rate of 90%. The long-term ovarian preservation rate of complex cysts after surgery was relatively low. Our study suggested that surgical treatment did not increase the chances of preserving the ovaries of patients with complex cysts.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate prenatal ultrasound features, fetal postnatal outcomes, and the need for postnatal surgery in the suspicion of ovarian torsion. Methods: We included patients with a singleton pregnancy with a suspicion of ovarian fetal cyst referred to our center. Data derived from prenatal ultrasound evaluations, delivery, and postnatal follow-up were then extracted from the hospital registers. Results: The ultrasound features of 32 fetal ovarian cysts and related neonatal outcomes were analyzed. The mean gestational age at diagnosis was 32 weeks (28-36), while the mean diameter of the cyst diagnosis was 34.8 ± 13.2 mm. In 78.1% of cases, the cysts did not change their characteristics during pregnancy, while in 9.4%, they increased their dimensions, and in 12.5%, they reduced their size. In 78.1% of cases, the diagnosis was confirmed postnatally, and in 40% of cases, a spontaneous regression occurred during follow-up. Surgery was performed in 60% of cases, and most of the time (66.7%), an adnexectomy was required. Conclusions: An unfavorable outcome was associated with cystic dimensions and ultrasound feature modifications during pregnancy. However, our study demonstrated that a hemorrhagic content is not always indicative of adnexal torsion, and spontaneous resolution may occur. In addition, only a few of the simple anechoic cysts managed surgically presented with necrosis at histopathological examination; therefore, a conservative approach might be proposed in those cases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Postnatal management of antenatally diagnosed ovarian cysts is not well-defined. The clinical course, management, and outcomes of patients with antenatally diagnosed ovarian cysts were reviewed. METHODS Infants <1 year of age with antenatally diagnosed ovarian cyst managed at The Hospital for Sick Children between January 2017 and December 2021 were included. Patient charts were reviewed for postnatal ultrasound (US) images, management, clinical course and complications. Mixed linear regression analysis was used to model the change in cyst size over time. RESULTS In total, 52 patients were included and 10 patients had no cyst identified at their first postnatal US. Of the remaining cases, 36% were simple/physiologic and 64% had complex features. Two underwent percutaneous aspiration while 40 patients were managed expectantly with most cysts (62%) resolving. The rate of resolution was significantly higher and faster for simple compared to complex cysts (84% versus 52%, p < 0.05). Cysts that persisted at the end of the study period (n = 14) had all decreased in size, with a rate of resolution similar to resolved cysts. Only one patient managed expectantly required urgent laparoscopy for salpingoophorectomy. CONCLUSION Antenatally diagnosed ovarian cysts exhibit high rates of resolution with expectant management, supporting the safety and efficacy for expectant management for these patients. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the suitability of conservative management for neonatal ovarian cysts in newborns. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted, involving infants diagnosed with neonatal abdominal/pelvic cysts at two separate medical institutions from January 2015 through July 2021. Data collection included clinical characteristics, imaging results, pathological findings, and postnatal outcomes. Statistical analyses were performed using the Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS In total, 34 cases of neonatal abdominal/pelvic cystic masses were detected, with mean birth weight of 3401 ± 515 g. Of these, 22 patients underwent postnatal cystectomy/oophorectomy. Pathological assessments revealed 16 uncomplicated cysts, 5 complex cysts, and 1 ovarian cyst with torsion complications. Notably, the cysts' dimensions at the time of surgical intervention had significantly decreased from the initial measurements (p = 0.015). The ROC curve analysis presented an area under the curve of 0.642, indicating moderate accuracy in employing cyst size as a discriminative feature to differentiate complex from simple ovarian cysts. Additionally, a short-term follow-up of nonsurgical cases indicated a 100% resolution rate by 24 months of age (n = 9). CONCLUSION Given their predominantly benign nature, the majority of neonatal ovarian cysts seem to be amenable to conservative management. This approach remains justified for larger cysts with minimal torsion risk, as well as considering the observed reduction in cyst size at birth, which further supports the case against surgical intervention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Neonatal ovarian simple cyst management from the pediatric surgical aspect is unclear on cyst size, follow-up, and preferred surgical approach. Therefore, this topic was selected for the 2022 Consensus Session meeting of the European Paediatric Surgeons' Association (EUPSA). METHODS The literature was reviewed on a predefined set of questions relating to the management of the neonatal ovarian simple cysts by a panel of 7 EUPSA members, on current evidence-based opinion and practice outlined. Each question (1) outcomes of fetal interventions in neonates after birth and consensus on size/timing of intervention, (2) consensus on the type of interventions, and (3) complications in neonatal ovarian cysts and follow-up recommendations in nonoperated/operated cysts, was presented with available evidence to congress session participants. The management approach was agreed by participants and comments were accounted to formulate the consensus statement. RESULTS There is still limited data on potential benefits and complications of prenatal ultrasound-guided aspiration; however, neonates after such procedures should be followed for 6 months. Neonates with simple ovarian cysts larger than 4 cm should be offered surgical interventions within the 2 weeks of life with complete laparoscopic cyst aspiration and fenestration with bipolar instruments being the preferred approach. Ultrasound follow-up after surgical intervention after 3 months and with the conservative approach after every 3 to 4 months until 1 year. CONCLUSION A peer-reviewed consensus statement for the management of neonatal ovarian simple cyst was formulated based on current evidence and peer practice. The EUPSA recognizes that the statement can be useful for pediatric surgeons in decision making for this pathology.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the natural history of fetal ovarian cysts and elucidate the risk factors for postnatal adverse outcomes in fetal ovarian cysts. METHODS The study subjects were 18 cases with ovarian cysts prenatally diagnosed using ultrasonography at our hospital between 2007 and 2020. The subjects were classified by cyst characteristics according to echogenic patterns [simple cyst (S) and complex cyst (C)], changes in echogenic patterns (S-to-S, S-to-C, and C-to-C), and diameters (<40 and ≥ 40 mm). Clinical parameters and outcomes were compared between S and C patterns, S-to-S and S-to-C patterns, and <40 and ≥ 40 mm diameters. RESULTS Cases with S and C patterns (15 and 3, respectively) had median gestational ages of 35 and 36 weeks, respectively, and maximum cyst diameters of 36 and 57mm, respectively. The number of cases with S-to-S, S-to-C and C-to-C patterns were 11, 4 and 3, respectively. The maximum cyst diameter in cases with S-to-C patterns (58 mm) was larger than that in cases with S-to-S patterns (34 mm) (P<0.05). Placental weight in cases with cysts >40 mm and/or cyst expansion was greater than that in cases with neither or both conditions (P<0.05). Spontaneous resolution (before and after birth) occurred in 8 of 9 and 3 of 9 cases with maximum cyst diameters <40 and ≥ 40 mm, respectively. Ovarian function was lost in 2 cases with S-to-C patterns and in 2 cases with C-to-C patterns. CONCLUSION Cases with cyst diameters ≥ 40 mm and/or cyst expansion during the late third trimester had greater placental weight and more postnatal adverse outcomes.

Abstract
Background Ovarian cysts are common diseases among women. They might affect reproductive function in severe cases, and thus, patients with ovarian cysts often have negative emotions. Purpose In this study, we elucidated the risk factors for negative emotions in patients with ovarian cysts during the perioperative period and their impact on prognosis. Methods From August 2019 to August 2021, we retrospectively included 330 female patients with pathologically diagnosed benign ovarian cysts as potential participants in this study. Based on the established inclusion and exclusion criteria, 308 patients were finally included. We performed the t-test and Chi-squared test to analyze the relationship between the negative emotions of the patients and prognosis. Binary logistic regression and linear regression were used to assess independent risk factors for negative patient mood and prognosis.Based on SAS and SDS scores, patients with anxiety and/or depression are considered to combined negative emotions. Results In total, 47 patients (15.3%) had negative emotions during the perioperative period. The results of the binary logistic regression analysis showed that the menstrual status (OR = 3.099, P = 0.028), intraoperative blood loss (OR = 1.043, P = 0.029), recurrence (OR = 3.691, P = 0.047), and several other factors were independent risk factors for negative emotions. The results of the linear regression analysis showed that the presence of combined negative affect (P = 0.000), recurrence (P = 0.010), postoperative IL-2 (P = 0.035), and several other factors were independent risk factors for patient prognosis. Conclusion In clinical work, identifying the independent risk factors for negative emotions and enhancing their behavioral awareness and self-efficacy is necessary to improve their quality of life after surgery. Meanwhile, we will continue our exploration of the causes of negative emotions in patients in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We conducted a multicenter study to assess treatments and outcomes in a national cohort of infants with congenital ovarian cysts. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA Wide variability exists in the treatment of congenital ovarian cysts. The effects of various treatment strategies on outcomes, specifically ovarian preservation, are not known. METHODS Female infants diagnosed with congenital intra-abdominal cysts between 2013 and 2017 at 10 Canadian pediatric surgical centers were retrospectively evaluated. Sonographic characteristics, median time to cyst resolution, incidence of ovarian preservation, and predictors of surgery were evaluated. Subgroup analyses were performed in patients with complex cysts and cysts ≥40 mm in diameter. RESULTS The study population included 189 neonates. Median gestational age at diagnosis and median maximal prenatal cyst diameter were 33 weeks and 40 mm, respectively. Cysts resolved spontaneously in 117 patients (62%), 14 (7%) prenatally, and the remainder at a median age of 124 days. Intervention occurred in 61 patients (32%), including prenatal aspiration (2, 3%), ovary sparing resection (14, 23%), or oophorectomy (45, 74%). Surgery occurred at a median age of 7.4weeks. Independent predictors of surgery included postnatal cyst diameter ≥40 mm [odds ratio (OR) 6.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.66-35.9] and sonographic complex cyst character (OR 63.6, 95% CI 10.9-1232). There was no significant difference in the odds of ovarian preservation (OR 3.06, 95% CI 0.86 -13.2) between patients who underwent early surgery (n = 22) and those initially observed for at least 3 months (n = 131). CONCLUSIONS Most congenital ovarian cysts are asymptomatic and spontaneously resolve. Early surgical intervention does not increase ovarian preservation.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Fetal ovarian cysts (FOCs) are a very rare pathology that can be associated with maternal-fetal and neonatal complications. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of ultrasound characteristics on FOC evolution and therapeutic management. Materials and Methods: We included cases admitted to our perinatal tertiary center between August 2016 and December 2022 with a prenatal or postnatal ultrasound evaluation indicative of FOC. We retrospectively analyzed the pre- and postnatal medical records, sonographic findings, operation protocols, and pathology reports. Results: This study investigated 20 cases of FOCs, of which 17 (85%) were diagnosed prenatally and 3 (15%) postnatally. The mean size of prenatally diagnosed ovarian cysts was 34.64 ± 12.53 mm for simple ovarian cysts and 55.16 ± 21.01 mm for complex ovarian cysts (p = 0.01). The simple FOCs ≤ 4 cm underwent resorption (n = 7, 70%) or size reduction (n = 3, 30%) without complications. Only 1 simple FOC greater than 4 cm reduced its size during follow-up, while 2 cases (66.6%) were complicated with ovarian torsion. Complex ovarian cysts diagnosed prenatally underwent resorption in only 1 case (25%), reduced in size in 1 case (25%), and were complicated with ovarian torsion in 2 cases (50%). Moreover, 2 simple (66.6%) and 1 complex (33.3%) fetal ovarian cysts were postnatally diagnosed. All of these simple ovarian cysts had a maximum diameter of ≤4 cm, and all of them underwent size reduction. The complex ovarian cyst of 4 cm underwent resorption during follow-up. Conclusions: Symptomatic neonatal ovarian cysts, as well as those that grow in size during sonographic follow-up, are in danger of ovarian torsion and should be operated on. Complex cysts and large cysts (with >4 cm diameter) could be followed up unless they become symptomatic or increase in dimensions during serial ultrasounds.

Abstract
Genital anomalies are a heterogeneous group of congenital pathologies that have become increasingly relevant since the Chicago Consensus of 2005. Their postnatal diagnosis has developed significantly in the last two decades, while prenatal diagnosis seems to be underdeveloped, with few protocols available, fragmented scientific literature, and low diagnostic rates. This review aims to examine the current status of this subspecialty from the perspective of prenatal imaging. Indications for the evaluation of fetal genitalia can be divided into medical and non-medical reasons. Medical reasons include sex-linked disorders, detection of other anomalies, relevant family history, or multiple pregnancy. Non-medical reasons include parental request for sex disclosure. Disclosure of fetal sex may be associated with ethical, legal, and medical issues. The main imaging technology used is 2D ultrasound, although there are other complementary techniques such as 3D, MRI, or Color Doppler. Regarding working methodology, several authors have drawn attention to the lack of standardized protocols and guidelines. Most guidelines tend to limit their recommendations to study indications and ethical issues. Technical proposals, measurements, or working methods have not yet been standardized. Fetal sex determination is usually divided into early and late gestation. Early gestation is based on the sagittal sign. Late gestation is based on direct visualization. There are several measurements to describe male and female genitalia, such as penile length, bilabial diameter, or scrotal diameter. Prenatal diagnosis of genital pathologies presents some particularities such as the wide spectrum of phenotypes, the high frequency of associated deformities, or the time of diagnosis. Some of the most frequent pathologies are ambiguous genitalia, fetal sex discordance, hypospadias, micropenis, clitoromegaly, ovarian cysts, hydro(metro)colpos, and cloacal anomalies. Higher-quality studies and direction from scientific societies through the implementation of clinical guidelines are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe ultrasound features of fetal ovarian cysts as reported by the original ultrasound examiner, to apply International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) terminology after retrospective analysis of the images and to describe patient management and evolution of fetal cysts during pregnancy and after delivery. METHODS This retrospective observational study included pregnant women diagnosed on ultrasound examination with a fetal ovarian cyst at the Prenatal Diagnosis Division of the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital, in Rome, between March 2011 and May 2020. Cysts were classified by the original ultrasound examiner as 'simple' (unilocular anechoic cyst) or 'complex' (cyst with other morphology). In addition, three ultrasound examiners, experienced in gynecologic ultrasound, classified retrospectively the fetal ovarian cysts according to IOTA terminology, by reviewing stored ultrasound images. The evolution of these fetal ovarian cysts during pregnancy and after birth was recorded. RESULTS Included were 51 ovarian cysts in 48 fetuses. Of the 51 cysts, 29 (56.9%) had been classified by the original ultrasound examiner as 'simple', and 22 (43.1%) as 'complex'. Of the simple cysts, the majority (20/29 (69.0%)) resolved spontaneously after delivery, 2/29 (6.9%) resolved following intrauterine aspiration, 2/29 (6.9%) resolved after postnatal aspiration and 5/29 (17.2%) underwent surgery due to persistence after delivery; in all five, normal ovarian parenchyma without signs of necrosis was observed at histology. Of the complex cysts, 7/22 (31.8%) resolved spontaneously. The other 15/22 (68.2%) were removed surgically and, at histology, necrosis was observed in most (12/15 (80.0%)), while a benign epithelial cyst with normal ovarian parenchyma was observed in 3/15 (20%). After reviewing the ultrasound images and applying IOTA terminology, all 51 (100%) fetal cysts were described as unilocular; 29/51 (56.9%) cysts showed anechoic content (described as simple cysts by the original ultrasound examiner), and 10/51 (19.6%) had low-level, 1/51 (2.0%) had ground-glass, 9/51 (17.6%) had hemorrhagic, 1/51 (2.0%) had mixed and 1/51 (2.0%) had undefined content (all described as complex by the original ultrasound examiner). Among the 29 anechoic ovarian cysts, resolution was observed in most (24/29, 82.8%) cases. Similarly, resolution was observed in 7/10 (70.0%) cysts with low-level content. Resolution was not observed in any of the other 12 cysts and all of these cases underwent surgery, with evidence of necrosis being observed in 11 (91.7%). CONCLUSIONS Applying IOTA terminology provided a more detailed and accurate description of fetal ovarian cysts compared with the original classification into 'simple' and 'complex' categories. Anechoic cysts (described as simple cysts by the original ultrasound examiner) and cysts with low-level content (described as complex by the original ultrasound examiner) frequently resolved spontaneously. Cysts with ground-glass, hemorrhagic, mixed or undefined content were frequently associated with necrosis at histology following surgery. © 2022 The Authors. Abstract
Abdominal cystic masses are diagnosed during the intrauterine period and have a relatively low incidence. Fetal ovarian cysts are the most common form diagnosed prenatally or immediately after birth. The pathophysiology of the development of these types of tumors is not fully elucidated, with ovarian hyperstimulation caused by maternal and placental hormones being the most accepted hypothesis. During intrauterine development, the diagnosis of fetal ovarian cysts is most often made accidentally during usual check-up ultrasounds corresponding to the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy. We conducted a scoping review with the aim to map the current knowledge regarding the treatment of fetal ovarian cysts diagnosed in the intrauterine period. Focusing on the articles published in the last 10 years in the specialized literature, we tried to identify a conceptualization regarding the surveillance and treatment of these anomalies.

Abstract
Ovarian absence is an uncommon condition that most frequently presents unilaterally. Several etiologies for the condition have been proposed, including torsion, vascular accident, and embryological defect. A systematic review was conducted to describe the clinical presentation of ovarian absence, as well as its associations with other congenital anomalies, through a systematic search of Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, Google Scholar, Ovid Embase, Ovid Medline, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Exclusion criteria included cases with suspicion for Differences of Sex Development, lack of surgically-confirmed ovarian absence, and karyotypes other than 46XX. Our search yielded 12,120 citations, of which 79 studies were included. 10 additional studies were found by citation chasing resulting in a total 113 cases including two unpublished cases presented in this review. Abdominal/pelvic pain (30%) and infertility/subfertility (19%) were the most frequent presentations. Ovarian abnormalities were not noted in 28% of cases with pre-operative ovarian imaging results. Approximately 17% of cases had concomitant uterine abnormalities, while 22% had renal abnormalities. Renal abnormalities were more likely in patients with uterine abnormalities (p < 0.005). Torsion or vascular etiology was the most frequently suspected etiology of ovarian absence (52%), followed by indeterminate (27%) and embryologic etiology (21%). Most cases of ovarian absence are likely attributable to torsion or vascular accidents, despite many references to the condition as "agenesis" in the literature. Imaging may fail to correctly diagnose ovarian absence, and diagnostic laparoscopy may be preferable in many cases as genitourinary anatomy and fertility considerations can be assessed during the procedure. Fertility is likely minimally or not affected in women with unilateral ovarian absence.

Abstract
Introduction and importance: Foetal hydrocolpos and anorectal malformation are difficult to diagnose prenatally due to abundance of differential diagnoses. This case report presents the challenges of diagnosing such disorders. Case presentation A G3P2A0 woman came at 32 weeks of pregnancy with a referral for foetal ovarian cyst. Ultrasound revealed a singleton breech pregnancy, estimated foetal weight 3528 g. A septate abdominal cyst measuring 11.31 × 7.17 cm and polyhydramnios were present. Elective caesarean section delivered a female baby weighing 2820 g and measuring 43 cm. Neonatal examination revealed a right lateral suprapubic mass and a rectovestibular fistula. A sinoscopy revealed a suspected hydrocolpos. An abdominal hydrocolpos drainage was performed; a patent urachus and normal bilateral adnexa were present. Clinical discussion Hydrocolpos is a rare congenital disorder due to distal obstruction of various etiologies. It may be mistaken with other pathologies, including fetal ovarian cysts. A genitourinary congenital abnormality may occur in conjunction with other abnormalities, including gastrointestinal tract anomalies. The presence of imperforate anus and/or fistula should alert the clinician of a possible association with VACTERL syndrome. Conclusion Hydrocolpos is a rare congenital genitourinary disorder with various differential diagnoses. Simultaneous presence of other abnormalities is likely, with possible association to other syndromes.

Abstract
Aim The aim of this study is to investigate the quality and reliability of YouTube videos containing content related to ovarian cysts. Methods The search terms “Ovarian Cyst”, “Ovarian Cyst Symptoms”, “Ovarian Cyst Treatment”, and “Ovarian Cyst Diagnosis” were searched on YouTube. A total of 110 videos were examined and repetitive videos, non-English videos, videos with advertising content, videos with entertainment and news content, and videos with very poor image and sound quality were excluded. Finally, the videos included in the study were evaluated using DISCERN and Global Quality Scale (GQS). Results It was found that 50 videos examined in this study were uploaded between the years 2014 and 2020, with an average of 492.252 ± 710.768 and a total of 24.612.595 views. The mean DISCERN score given to 50 videos analyzed by two researchers was 2.81 ± 1.3 and the mean GQS score was 2.88 ± 1.4. When we divided the scores given to the videos by two researchers into three groups, it was determined that 27 (54%) of the 50 videos were in the misleading/poor quality group, nine (18%) were in the medium quality group, and 14 (28%) were in the useful/quality group. Conclusion It has been determined that the videos with "ovarian cyst" content on YouTube are generally of poor quality. Bad quality videos were uploaded by non-doctors and attracted more attention than videos uploaded by doctors.

Fetal genital malformations represent a rare and heterogeneous group of congenital malformations of the disorders of sexual development (DSD) spectrum.
Methods
A thorough literature review on the main topics in the prenatal approach towards DSD was conducted.
Results
First, a thorough overview on prenatal characteristics of the most common fetal genital malformations of ovaries, uterus and external genitalia, and second, a standardized approach for differential diagnosis in the presence of direct and indirect prenatal signs of DSDs.
Conclusions
This review is mainly directed towards the aspects of female genital malformations with aspects of male DSD explained as well to aid in the prenatal differential diagnosis.

STUDY OBJECTIVE Antenatal ovarian torsion (AOT) is rare and requires differentiating from other congenital cystic masses of the abdomen and pelvis in neonates. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the prenatal characteristics and postnatal outcomes of AOT. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, INTERVENTIONS, AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Hospital records of patients (n = 28) with diagnosis of AOT between 2004 and 2020 were reviewed and their prenatal characteristics, postnatal examination, imaging, operative, and histopathological findings were evaluated. RESULTS There were 28 patients during the study period. In most of the patients (25/28; 89.3%) AOTs were detected prenatally. All were term babies with a mean birth weight of 3010 ± 466.6 g. Mean maternal age was 25.75 ± 3.65 years. Prenatal history was event-free in all and none had additional anomalies. Physical examination revealed mobile intra-abdominal cystic lesions in 16 (57.1%) patients. AOTs mimicked other pathologies as intestinal duplication cyst or mesenteric cyst (n = 7), complex ovarian cyst (n = 3), mature cystic teratoma (n = 3), simple renal cyst (n = 1), and ectopic kidney (n = 1) in 15 (53.6%) patients in postnatal ultrasonography. Elective laparoscopic surgery was performed in 26 (92.8%) patients. The other 2 patients required emergency open surgery because of acute symptoms. Ovaries were autoamputated in 17 (60.7%) patients. Histopathological examination revealed necrosis and dystrophic calcification in all specimens. There was neoplastic involvement in 2 patients (serous cystadenoma and gonadoblastoma). No complication occurred in the early follow-up period (mean: 73.9 ± 46.8 months). CONCLUSION AOTs can be detected easily during the antenatal period. Neoplastic involvement with AOTs is rare but possible. Although AOTs might mimic other cystic pathologies, it should be one of the first diagnoses to be considered, in the presence of a palpable intra-abdominal mass and complex cystic lesion in infant girls. It can be efficiently and safely managed using minimally invasive techniques.

Abstract
The present study provides our clinical experience regarding the imaging diagnosis, management and postnatal outcome of neonates prenatally suspected of having developed ovarian cysts. This multicenter observational study included patients diagnosed prenatally with fetal ovarian cysts and follow-up in the postnatal period. Descriptive statistics were used to render the information regarding the prenatal imaging aspect of the fetal pelvic masses using ultrasound and/or MRI, prenatal surveillance and postnatal neonate’s immediate outcome, indications leading to surgery and pathologic aspect. The inclusion criteria were fulfilled by 21 patients. The mean gestational age at the time of initial diagnosis was 31.28 weeks of gestation (WG). Only five out of 21 cysts regressed completely during pregnancy without postnatal complications. In addition, 11 out of 21 infant’s required surgical treatment in the first two weeks after birth, mainly for ovarian torsion. Five out of 21 neonates were referred to postnatal follow-up clinically and by ultrasound, but three out of five cases required emergency surgical treatment for acute complications. Ultrasound plays a major role in the diagnostic of fetal ovarian cyst. From our experience, MRI does not bring supplementary data or change the management. Spontaneous resolution of fetal ovarian cysts is to be expected but the ovarian mass could lead to serious complications, if resolution does not occur in due time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fetal ovarian cysts are the most frequently diagnosed intra-abdominal cysts; however, the evidence for perinatal management remains controversial. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed cases of fetal ovarian cysts diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography at our institution between January 2010 and January 2020. The following were investigated: gestational age at diagnosis, cyst size, appearance, prenatal ultrasound findings, and postnatal outcomes. Prior to 2018, expectant management was applied in all cases; after 2018, in utero aspiration (IUA) of simple cysts ≥40 mm was performed. RESULTS We diagnosed 29 and seven simple and complex cysts, respectively. Fourteen patients had simple cysts with a maximum diameter <40 mm, and two of them progressed to complex cysts during follow-up; however, when the diameter was limited to <35 mm, no cases showed progression to complex cyst. Fifteen of the simple cysts were ≥40 mm; three progressed to complex cysts, and two of them were confirmed to be ovarian necrosis. In four patients who underwent IUA, the ovaries could be preserved. CONCLUSIONS IUA is a promising therapy for preserving ovaries with simple cysts ≥40 mm in diameter; however, the indications for fetal surgery and the appropriate timing of intervention require further study.

Abstract
An autoamputated ovary (AO) is an extremely rare circumstance with a few reports in the literature. We present a case of a 3-month-old girl with a history of vague abdominal symptoms as well as a known ovarian mass, which was initially suspected to be benign and regressing. On laparoscopy for pain and obstructive symptoms, she was found to have an AO. The pathology was consistent with necrotic and torsed ovarian tissue with superimposed infection and possibly a cystic non-malignant teratoma. AOs are thought to originate from a torsion and are typically diagnosed incidentally. This is an interesting case of an AO causing a partial small bowel obstruction.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the natural history of fetal ovarian cysts and to investigate whether the prognosis can be predicted by prenatal ultrasonography (US). METHODS This retrospective study includes cases of fetal ovarian cysts diagnosed by prenatal US over a 6-year period. Cases were divided into four subgroups of cysts (small and simple, small and complex, large and simple, large and complex) according to their size and echotexture. US examinations were repeated every 2 weeks from the time of diagnosis to treatment. RESULTS A total of 37 cases were included in the study. 32.4% of the cases regressed spontaneously in the prenatal period and 32.4% did so in the infantile period. Prenatal resolution occurred more frequently with small cysts than with large cysts (p = 0.03). Neonates with complex cysts required surgical treatment more often than neonates with simple cysts (p = 0.009). 27.0% of the cases underwent surgery due to ovarian torsion. The torsion rate of fetal ovarian cysts that progressed in the prenatal period was significantly higher than in the case of stable cysts (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION The size of the fetal ovarian cysts, their US appearance and the progression of the cysts during follow-up are the main determinants of the neonatal outcome.

Prenatal genetic screening, including evaluation for inherited genetic disorders, aneuploidy risk assessment, and sonographic assessment, combined with a thorough newborn examination and standard newborn screening, including blood, hearing, and congenital heart disease screening, can reveal conditions requiring further evaluation after delivery. Abnormal prenatal or newborn screening results should prompt additional diagnostic testing guided by maternal fetal medicine, perinatal genetics, or pediatric specialists.

Abstract
This article reviews the contemporary diagnosis and management of the most common abdominal neoplasms and cystic lesions diagnosed in the fetus. Fetal tumors discussed include teratomas (sacrococcygeal, cervical or mediastinal), mesoblastic nephroma, nephroblastoma (Wilms' tumor), neuroblastoma, and hepatoblastoma. Fetal abdominal cystic lesions discussed include ovarian cyst, choledochal cyst, intestinal duplication cyst, mesenteric cyst, simple hepatic cyst, and meconium pseudocyst. We discuss the rare indications for fetal intervention or fetal surgery and other perinatal management, including prenatal interventions and fetal surgery for sacrococcygeal teratoma. The lesions reviewed are detected by widespread use of screening ultrasonography during pregnancy. Work-up for these abnormalities may include fetal MRI which enhances the diagnostic accuracy of abdominal tumors and cystic lesions and can aid in characterization of the lesion in relationship to surrounding anatomic structures. Accurate prenatal diagnosis of such lesions permits recommendations for optimal location and timing of delivery, and inclusion of appropriate caregivers and expertise to facilitate postnatal management. Perinatal management of the fetus with a neoplasm requires consideration of the optimal timing and mode of delivery, and pediatric oncology and surgical specialty care. The majority of tumors diagnosed antenatally have good prognosis with current multimodality treatment.

Abstract
A prenatal ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor (JGCT) is a rare entity which may present as an intra-abdominal cyst. Due to its low incidence, optimal management and timing for intervention remain uncertain. This report presents a case of an intra-abdominal cystic structure in a female fetus, one of the two fetuses in a dichorionic-diamniotic twin pregnancy, detected during routine fetal sonographic surveillance at 30 weeks of gestation. Further fetal evaluation detected the sonographic triad of an ovarian cystic mass, polyhydramnios and signs of fetal virilizations, requiring us to consider the presence of an atypical, ovarian androgen secreting tumor. Following delivery, acute ovarian torsion and intracystic hemorrhage required emergent surgical intervention, confirming the diagnosis of JGCT. Following surgical treatment, laboratory, clinical, and morphological features improved progressively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The outcome of antenatally detected fetal intra-abdominal cysts is highly variable and challenging to predict. Antenatal ultrasound scans may be of value in predicting postnatal outcome. AIMS To report antenatal and postnatal course of fetal intra-abdominal cysts identified on antenatal ultrasound and establish the value of cyst dimensions for predicting outcome. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective observational study. SUBJECTS All intra-abdominal cysts diagnosed in a single centre between 2013 and 2019. OUTCOME MEASURES Cyst characteristics were recorded from radiological reports and postnatal diagnosis and outcomes documented. Growth characteristics were identified to distinguish different diagnosis. The maximum antenatal diameter of all cysts was identified and the best cut-off diameter to predict whether a cyst would persist postnatally or require surgery was identified. Best cut-off values were identified using Youden index. RESULTS Of the 38 cysts identified on antenatal ultrasound, 24 (63%) persisted postnatally, 8 required surgery (21%) and 4 (11%) were not considered an intra-abdominal cyst postnatally. Ovarian cyst and duplication cyst may have different growth characteristics. In the prediction of cysts persisting postnatally, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.81 (95% CI, 0.66-0.95). Two cut off values were identified, 37.5 mm (50% sensitivity, specificity 100%, Youden's index 0.50) and 28.5 mm (sensitivity 65%, specificity 85%, Youden's index 0.50). In the prediction of surgery, no optimal diameter was found; AUC was 0.57 (95% CI, 0.34-0.81). CONCLUSIONS Maximum antenatal cyst diameter is useful for the prediction of whether a cyst will persist postnatally but not for the prediction of surgery.

Abstract
To evaluate the natural history and outcome of cases of fetal ovarian cyst under conservative prenatal treatment. A retrospective cohort study included patients diagnosed with fetal ovarian cysts was conducted between January 2008 to December 2016. Data including clinical data, sonographic feature and postnatal outcomes were obtained. One hundred and two cases were included for statistical analysis. The rate of spontaneous resolution was significantly higher among cases with simple than complex cysts (70/92 or 76.1% vs 2/10 or 20%, P < .01) and for cysts <4 cm than cysts ≥4 cm (50/56 or 89.3% vs 22/46 or 47.8%, P < .01). Ovarian torsion was confirmed in 5/102 (4.9%) cases; neither prenatal characteristics of cysts (complex: 2/10 or 20% vs simple: 3/92 or 3.3%, P = .07), nor their size (≥40 mm: 4/46 or 8.7% vs < 40 mm: 1/56 or 1.8%, P = .17) was predictive for ovarian torsion. 25/102 (24.5%) of cysts change in size or sonographic characteristics prenatally. Half of the complex cysts at the last prenatal scan are not ovarian in origin. 98/102 neonates (96.1%) were able to preserve both ovaries. Spontaneous resolution of ovarian cysts is predicted by cyst size and characteristics, whereas likelihood of torsion cannot be predicted.

Abstract
Background Fetal ovarian masses are common abdominal anomalies in female fetuses, often diagnosed in the third trimester. Most masses are benign and tend to resolve spontaneously within a few months after birth, but larger masses may present complications such as torsion. Case A 21-year-old primagravid woman was noted to have a complex avascular solid mass in the fetal left pelvis, which was consistent with complex fetal left ovarian torsion. The patient underwent induction of labor at 39 weeks for possible intervention. The infant underwent surgery at 5 weeks of age and a torsed, necrotic ovary was discovered. Conclusion The diagnosis of ovarian torsion in utero is rare, and prenatal and postnatal guidelines are needed on frequency of monitoring, timing of delivery, and postnatal follow-up. Diagnosis of ovarian torsion antenatal is rare. Counseling is a balance of the risk-benefit of timing of delivery and surgical intervention. How long an ovary has been torsed is unpredictable, aggressive management may not be optimal. Multidisciplinary planning is beneficial for postnatal counseling and management. More research is necessary for optimal timing of delivery in cases of in-utero ovarian torsion.

Abstract
In the female, the canal of Nuck is a tubular fold of parietal peritoneum that travels along with the round ligament through the inguinal canal to its attachment on the labia majora. The canal of Nuck is analogous to the processus vaginalis in the male. In embryonic development, this pathway typically obliterates early in life; however, in some cases, it may partially or completely fail to close. This failure to obliterate can lead to complications ranging from a cyst of the canal of Nuck (also known as a female hydrocele) to herniation and incarceration of abdominal and pelvic organs. There is little information available in the medical literature concerning this rare condition; therefore, it is important for sonographers, physicians, and surgeons to be familiar with this developmental abnormality. This report represents the first prenatal case of a cyst of the canal of Nuck, along with the unique combination of a large left fetal ovarian cyst and acute polyhydramnios. The embryology, incidence, differential diagnosis, management, and treatment of these female conditions are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ovarian cysts are relatively common prenatal findings in female fetuses. The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of antenatal ultrasound in predicting spontaneous regression or a need for surgery. DESIGN All cases of fetal ovarian cysts treated in our Department between 2007 and 2016 were included. Patients underwent a sonographic monitoring in utero and after birth until spontaneous or surgical resolution. Subjects were divided into two groups according to their postnatal management. Receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) curves were used to test the predictive ability for postnatal surgery of the cyst's mean and maximum diameters; their optimal cut off points were also determined. RESULTS 38 cases of antenatally-detected fetal ovarian cysts were included. 12/38 cases underwent surgery (Group A). 26/38 cases were resolved spontaneously (Group B). Cyst size of those which were surgically excised significantly differed from those that regressed spontaneously. ROC curve pointed to 45 mm and 47 mm as optimal cut off points for the mean and the maximum cystic diameters, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Cyst size and echo-structure seemed good predictors for prognosis after birth. The optimal cut off points of the cysts mean and maximum diameters in predicting postnatal surgery have been identified as 45 mm and 47 mm, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE To describe the clinicopathological characteristics and management of surgically removed ovarian masses at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne from 1993 to 2012. METHODS Medical records were reviewed retrospectively. Data regarding clinical findings, imaging and surgical management were evaluated. RESULTS There were 266 ovarian masses found in 258 surgeries (eight had bilateral masses). Most were benign (246/266, 92.5%), 2.3% (6/266) were borderline, and 5.3% (14/266) were malignant. The most common presenting symptom was abdominal pain for benign masses (169/246, 68.7%), and a palpable mass for borderline and malignant masses (12/20, 60.0%). Sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound for detection of malignancy was 64.7% and 52.9% respectively. Ovarian torsion occurred in 22.1% (n=57), none with malignancy, with seven cases diagnosed under one year of age. Sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound for ovarian torsion was 22.0% and 91.9%, respectively. The proportion undergoing ovarian cystectomy rather than oophorectomy has increased from 56.3% during 1993-1997 to 93.8% during 2008-2012 (p<0.005). Ovarian torsion was managed with ovarian conservation in 82.6% of cases between 2008-2012. CONCLUSION The majority of pediatric and adolescent ovarian masses were benign. Sensitivity of ultrasound was fair for detection of malignancy, and poor for ovarian torsion. Conservative surgeries are increasingly common. Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to investigate the epidemiology and characteristics of surgically treated ovarian lesions in preadolescent girls. MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study including all 0- to 11-year-old girls operated at a single center from 1999 to 2016 for ovarian cysts, neoplasms or torsions. Patient charts were reviewed for symptoms, preoperative radiological imaging, operative details and histopathology. RESULTS We identified 78 girls, resulting in a population-based incidence of 4.2/100 000. Infants (n = 44) presented with benign cysts (42/44, 95%, one bilateral), a benign neoplasm (1/44, 2%) and a torsion without other pathology (1/44, 2%). Torsion was found in 25/29 (86%) ovaries with complex cysts and in 3/15 (21%) ovaries with simple cysts in preoperative imaging (P < 0.001). Most infants were symptomless. Lesions in 1- to 11-year-old girls (n = 34) included benign neoplasms (n = 21/34, 62%), malignant neoplasms (n = 5/34, 15%), a cyst with torsion (n = 1/34, 3%) and torsions without other pathology (n = 7/34, 21%). Torsion was more common in benign (17/21, 81%) than in malignant neoplasms (1/5, 20%) (P < 0.020). Ovarian diameter did not differ between ovaries with or without torsion (P = 0.238) or between benign and malignant neoplasms (P = 0.293). The duration of symptoms in lesions with or without torsion was similar. CONCLUSIONS The majority of surgically treated ovarian lesions in preadolescent are benign lesions with torsion. Surgery should be ovary-preserving and performed without delay.

Abstract
In order to explore the accuracy of computed tomography (CT) and type-B ultrasonography in the examinations infection of ovarian cyst, the computed tomography and type-B ultrasonography were used for the examinations of 50 patients with infection of ovarian cysts, whose results were analyzed to determine the accuracy. Results have shown that the misdiagnosis rates of CT for patients with infection of ovarian cyst reached 18%, in which the misdiagnosis rate of small lesion 2.1×1.5×1.8cm was relatively higher; in addition, the misdiagnosis rates of type-B ultrasonography reached 26%, in which the misdiagnosis rate of large lesion 2.6×1.6×1.5cm was relatively higher; however, the misdiagnosis rates of the joint examination of these methods were only 2%. In summary, the deficiencies of CT and type-B ultrasonography may lead to misdiagnosis; therefore, in the clinical practices, the examinations of patients with infection of ovarian cyst should combine CT and type-B ultrasonography together to avoid the misdiagnosis and obtain the most accurate results as much as possible, which is important to both the patients and the development of medical examinations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the origin and outcome in a cohort of male and female fetuses with intra-abdominal cysts, in order to provide recommendations on management and to improve prenatal counselling. METHODS From 2002 to 2016, intra-abdominal cysts were detected by ultrasound in 158 fetuses. Cases with an umbilical vein varix were excluded. Fetal, neonatal, and maternal characteristics were retrieved from electronic patient files. RESULTS In female fetuses (n = 114), intra-abdominal cysts were diagnosed at a later gestational age compared with male fetuses (n = 44) (median 32.0 vs. 21.5 weeks, p < 0.001). The maximum prenatal cyst diameter was larger in female fetuses (median 35 vs. 17 mm, p < 0.001). Associated anomalies were less frequent in females (n = 15, 13.2%) compared with males (n = 15, 34.1%). In females (n = 114), most cysts were of ovarian origin (n = 81, 71.1%). Surgery was performed in 30 (26.3%) female and 15 (34.1%) male neonates (p = 0.33). Anorectal malformations were present in 6 cases and often not recognized prenatally. CONCLUSIONS The differences in the origin of intra-abdominal cysts between male and female fetuses, resulting in differences in prenatal presentation and postnatal outcome should be taken into account in prenatal counseling within a multidisciplinary team. Evaluation of the fetal perianal muscular complex is indicated.

METHODS This multicenter, prospective, randomized open trial in two parallel groups included women from nine outpatient fetal medicine departments with singleton pregnancy ≥ 28 weeks of gestation and a female fetus with an ultrasound-diagnosed simple ovarian cyst, defined as a single fully anechoic cystic structure measuring ≥ 30 mm. They were allocated randomly to IUA under ultrasound guidance or expectant management. All procedures were performed by trained senior obstetricians. Primary outcome was need for neonatal intervention, by laparoscopy, laparotomy or transabdominal aspiration. Secondary outcomes were in-utero involution of the cyst and oophorectomy at birth. Analyses were conducted according to the intention-to-treat principle. RESULTS Of 61 participants, 34 were allocated to IUA and 27 to expectant management. Three IUA procedures (9%) could not be performed (one due to fetal position and two due to aspirations being dry). The remaining 31 IUA procedures were uneventful. The incidence of neonatal intervention did not differ significantly between the IUA and the expectant management groups (20.6% vs 37.0%; relative risk (RR), 0.55; 95% CI, 0.24-1.27). Nonetheless, IUA was associated with increased incidence of in-utero involution of the cyst (47.1% vs 18.5%; RR, 2.54; 95% CI, 1.07-6.05) and reduced rate of oophorectomy (3.0% vs 22.0%; RR, 0.13; 95% CI, 0.02-1.03) compared with expectant management. CONCLUSION IUA of anechoic fetal ovarian cysts, compared with expectant management, was not associated with a reduction in overall neonatal interventions but was associated with a reduced oophorectomy rate. Abstract
INTRODUCTION In a population-based study, we found an overall false-positive rate of 8.8% for the second and third trimester ultrasounds. Although numerous studies have been performed to examine factors which lead to false negatives, the same is not true for the factors associated with false positives. The principal objective of this study was to look for risk factors for false-positive diagnoses of fetal malformations on obstetric ultrasound scans. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this nested case-control study, the case infants were those whose mother had a false-positive antenatal ultrasound diagnosis of a malformation during the second or third trimester (ultrasound false-positives) and who were live - or stillborn in Auvergne in 2006-2010. The control group comprised all children who were ultrasound true-negatives in 2005 and 2007. The study included 46 cases and 184 controls, matched according to the level of the maternity unit in which they were born. RESULTS Most false-positive diagnoses were minor malformations. The mean term at this false-positive diagnosis was 27.7±5.4 weeks; in 46.8% of cases, the diagnosis was made during the second-trimester ultrasound. A single malformation was suspected in 95.7% of the cases. In 97.9% of cases, only one anatomical system was affected. In all, 49 malformations were identified among the 46 cases and their distribution differed according to anatomical system. The only risk factor identified was a body mass index (BMI)<25 (ORa=1.7; 95%CI: 1.2-2.4). DISCUSSION A maternal BMI<25 was the only risk factor identified for a false-positive ultrasound diagnosis of a fetal malformation.
