Assessing Pragmatic Skills Using Checklists with Children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: A Systematic Review

This paper investigates the use of checklists to assess pragmatics in children and adolescents who are deaf and hard of hearing. A systematic literature review was undertaken to identify all of the published research articles between 1979 and 2018 on the topic of the assessment of pragmatics for this population of children and adolescents. The 67 papers identified in this review were analyzed and all papers that utilized a checklist to assess pragmatic skills were identified. Across the 18 different published papers on the use of pragmatic skills among children who are deaf and hard of hearing, nine checklists were identified. These nine checklists were then compared and contrasted on six key features including identification of a theoretical framework or model; the type of pragmatic skills measured; the age range of the child assessed; the information/outputs generated; the primary informant for the assessment; and reliability, validity, and normative data. The resulting analysis provides a comprehensive guide to aid clinicians, educators, and researchers in selecting an appropriate checklist to assess pragmatic skills for children and adolescents who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Effectiveness and Retention of Teaching Memory Strategy Use to Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Although low levels of memory strategy use have been found in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), few studies have explored the effectiveness of interventions for improving strategy use with this population. In two studies, we examined the short- and longer term effectiveness of rehearsal strategy training. In Study 1, children with ASD made strong gains during a focused teaching session, but rehearsal strategy use was not well maintained after training. In Study 2, we increased training with multiple individualized sessions. Longer term maintenance of gains occurred, demonstrating the possibility of successfully teaching and generalizing of strategy use, findings that have important implications for classroom and intervention contexts with children with ASD.

Executive Functioning and Memory Strategy Use in Children with Autism

An executive functioning deficit in autism should be reflected in a low level of active strategy use on memory tasks. This study was a direct examination of memory strategy use in two problem-solving situations by children with autism. Two groups with autism were tested, one high-functioning group and one with moderate cognitive impairments. All participants took part in two memory experiments to examine the effect of changing the nature of the learning situation on strategy use: one experiment used a serial recall task, and the other a recall readiness task. In contrast to previous studies, significant spontaneous strategy use was found on both memory tasks, particularly among the high-functioning group. Similarly, changing task structure was found to have an important impact on increasing strategy use, particularly for the moderate-functioning group. However, the overall rate of strategy use for the children with autism was still lower than would be expected for non-handicapped groups. The results support an executive functioning deficit interpretation, but a deficit that is less extensive among high-functioning individuals. Practical implications of the study in terms of cognitive training are also discussed.

Effects of Hearing Status and Sign Language Use on Working Memory

Deaf individuals have been found to score lower than hearing individuals across a variety of memory tasks involving both verbal and nonverbal stimuli, particularly those requiring retention of serial order. Deaf individuals who are native signers, meanwhile, have been found to score higher on visual-spatial memory tasks than on verbal-sequential tasks and higher on some visual-spatial tasks than hearing nonsigners. However, hearing status and preferred language modality (signed or spoken) frequently are confounded in such studies. That situation is resolved in the present study by including deaf students who use spoken language and sign language interpreting students (hearing signers) as well as deaf signers and hearing nonsigners. Three complex memory span tasks revealed overall advantages for hearing signers and nonsigners over both deaf signers and deaf nonsigners on 2 tasks involving memory for verbal stimuli (letters). There were no differences among the groups on the task involving visual-spatial stimuli. The results are consistent with and extend recent findings concerning the effects of hearing status and language on memory and are discussed in terms of language modality, hearing status, and cognitive abilities among deaf and hearing individuals.

Spontaneous strategy use in children with autism spectrum disorder: the roles of metamemory and language skills

Metamemory, or beliefs about one’s own memory capabilities, knowing what you know, and knowing what you don’t know, has frequently been linked to the spontaneous use of rehearsal strategies in typically developing children. However, limited research has investigated mnemonic strategy use, metamemory, or the relationship between these two cognitive processes in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The current study examined the relative strength of metamemory knowledge and language skills as predictors of rehearsal use and memory performance in individuals with ASD. Twenty-one children with ASD and 21 children in a combined comparison group were matched on chronological and verbal mental age. Over two sessions, participants completed a serial recall task, a language measure, and a metamemory questionnaire. Children were classified as rehearsers/non-rehearsers based on behavioral observations and/or verbal reports of strategy use. As expected from previous research, the comparison group had a significantly higher proportion of rehearsers than the ASD group. However, spontaneous rehearsers performed significantly better on the serial recall task than non-rehearsers, regardless of group membership. Children in the comparison group had a higher mean total score on the metamemory questionnaire than the ASD group. However, when examined by rehearsal use, participants classified as rehearsers, regardless of diagnostic group, scored significantly higher on the metamemory questionnaire than non-rehearsers. Finally, across groups, hierarchical regression analyses identified both metamemory and language proficiency as significant predictors of rehearsal strategy use. The fact that the predictors showed the same relationship across the comparison group and the ASD group implies that metamemory and language proficiency, while separate entities, are both fundamental underlying skills contributing to the emergence of rehearsal strategies, and that the results are likely generalizable to other populations with developmental challenges.

Categorical perception of affective and linguistic facial expressions

Two experiments investigated categorical perception (CP) effects for affective facial expressions and linguistic facial expressions from American Sign Language (ASL) for Deaf native signers and hearing non-signers. Facial expressions were presented in isolation (Experiment 1) or in an ASL verb context (Experiment 2). Participants performed ABX discrimination and identification tasks on morphed affective and linguistic facial expression continua. The continua were created by morphing end-point photo exemplars into 11 images, changing linearly from one expression to another in equal steps. For both affective and linguistic expressions, hearing non-signers exhibited better discrimination across category boundaries than within categories for both experiments, thus replicating previous results with affective expressions and demonstrating CP effects for non-canonical facial expressions. Deaf signers, however, showed significant CP effects only for linguistic facial expressions. Subsequent analyses indicated that order of presentation influenced signers' response time performance for affective facial expressions: viewing linguistic facial expressions first slowed response time for affective facial expressions. We conclude that CP effects for affective facial expressions can be influenced by language experience.

Short-term auditory memory in children using cochlear implants and its relevance to receptive language

The aim of this study was to assess auditory sequential, short-term-memory (SSTM) performance in young children using cochlear implants (CI group) and to examine the relationship of this performance to receptive language performance. Twenty-four children, 5 to 11 years old, using the Nucleus 22-electrode cochlear implant, were tested on a number of auditory and visual tasks of SSTM. The auditory memory tasks were designed to minimize the effect of auditory discrimination ability. Stimuli were chosen that children with cochlear implants could accurately identify with a reaction time similar to that of a control group of children with normal hearing (NH group). All children were also assessed on a receptive language test and on a nonverbal intelligence scale. As expected, children using cochlear implants demonstrated poorer auditory and visual SSTM skills than their hearing peers when the stimuli were verbal or were pictures that could be readily labeled. They did not differ from their peers with normal hearing on tasks where the stimuli were less likely to be verbally encoded. An important finding was that the CI group did not appear to have a sequential memory deficit specific to the auditory modality. The difference scores (auditory minus visual memory performance) for the CI group were not significantly different from those for the NH group. SSTM performance accounted for significant variance in the receptive language performance of the CI group. However, a forward stepwise regression analysis revealed that visual spatial memory (one of the subtests of the nonverbal IQ test) was the main predictor of variance in the language scores of the children using cochlear implants.
