Canine reduction in the miocene hominoid Oreopithecus bambolii: behavioural and evolutionary implications

Isotopic reconstructions of habitat change surrounding the extinction of Oreopithecus, the last European ape

OBJECTIVE

Oreopithecus bambolii was the last hominoid to survive in Europe. The purpose of this investigation was to reconstruct, through stable isotope analyses, Oreopithecus' habitat, subsistence behavior, and changes in habitat that may have led to its extinction.

METHODS

Carbon and oxygen stable isotopes from inorganic carbonate in tooth enamel from Oreopithecus and its contemporaneous faunas from localities in Tuscany and Sardinia were sampled. Also the fauna from localities in Tuscany shortly after Oreopithecus went extinct were sampled.

RESULTS

Results indicated that Oreopithecus, compared with most modern hominoids, inhabited forests that probably had a more open canopy. At Tuscan localities, Oreopithecus yields some of the highest carbon isotope values but some of the lowest oxygen, suggesting a diet that may have included tubers or aquatic vegetation. Relatively higher oxygen values in Sardinia suggested that its diet included arboreal foods as well. Among modern and fossil hominoids, Oreopithecus only resembled chimpanzees living outside of rainforests. It also resembled Ardipithecus in carbon isotope values, suggesting possible similarities in feeding strategies concordant with shared skeletal features between Oreopithecus and early hominins. Isotope values from post-Oreopithecus faunas indicated a shift to more forested conditions, unlike other hominoid extinctions associated with loss of forest.

CONCLUSIONS

Isotopic reconstructions of Oreopithecus' habitat and changes associated with its extinction indicated that its paleoecology was unique among hominoids. However, these reconstructions also suggested that like other hominoids, Oreopithecus was susceptible to changes in seasonality of precipitation, and it may have used wetlands as a buffer to seasonal regimes. The relationship between bending stress and the shape of maxillary canines in cercopithecoid monkeys

Primate canines function in social displays but are also recruited for biting in agonistic encounters. Although the precise nature of the loads such behavior places on the canine crown is unknown, it is thought that bending is a major component of such loads. To date, modeling of canine bending strength has relied on idealized geometric representations. Accounting for the tapering of the crown as well as shape changes along an apical-basal axis provides a more realistic model for assessment of bending stress in canines. We provide such an accounting and evaluate the hypothesis that the morphology of the cercopithecoid canine represents a structural solution for maintaining constant maximum bending stress under apical or distributed loading in a parasagittal plane. This isostress hypothesis is analogous to a design criterion of minimum mass for a given structural requirement. Examining permanent maxillary canines from males and females representing eight West African cercopithecoid species, we reconstructed crown geometry from apex to base using microcomputed tomography. From reconstructed cross-sections, we determined section moduli about a buccolingual centroidal axis. We then determined what the taper should be for a variety of parasagittal loading distributions if the isostress hypothesis were true and compared these theoretical tapers to actual crown geometry. We found that a variety of loading distributions can be accommodated by the canines, particularly among males. These results suggest that our sample of canines are not optimized for resisting particular biting loads, but effectively limit stress gradients associated with a range of behaviors.

New dental remains of Hispanopithecus laietanus (Primates: Hominidae) from Can Llobateres 1 and the taxonomy of Late Miocene hominoids from the Vallès-Penedès Basin (NE Iberian Peninsula)

Here we report 12 teeth of the fossil great ape Hispanopithecus (Hominidae: Dryopithecinae: Hispanopithecini), recovered in 2011 from the locality of Can Llobateres 1 (MN9, early Vallesian, Late Miocene, ca. 9.7 Ma [millions of years ago]) in the Vallès-Penedès Basin (Catalonia, Spain). Besides an isolated dP(3) from layer CLL1.1b in the eastern (classical) sector of the site, all of the remaining teeth come from facies CLL1.0 (roughly equivalent to CLL1.2 and CLL1.1b), located in the newly excavated western sector, and representing at least two different individuals. Based on facet congruence and degree of wear, all of the upper cheek teeth, a central incisor and a lateral incisor most likely correspond to a single young adult individual of unknown sex, whereas a very worn I(2) and a female C(1) represent one or two additional individual(s). Morphological and metrical comparisons allow us to attribute these remains to Hispanopithecus laietanus, which is the single hominoid species recognized at CLL1. The newly described teeth represent a significant addition to the hypodigm of this taxon, enabling us to more completely assess the degree of variation displayed by several teeth. In light of the new specimens, the previous tooth position assignment of several upper molars from Can Llobateres and Can Poncic is revised, and the criteria employed to distinguish Hispanopithecus crusafonti from H. laietanus are critically evaluated. On the basis of the available upper cheek teeth from these localities, a distinction at the species level between both samples is tentatively favored, mainly on the basis of P(3), M(1) and M(2) proportions as well as I(1) lingual morphology and proportions. The results of the 2011 field season unambiguously confirm that hominoid-bearing fossiliferous layers from CLL1 are not exhausted. Additional excavations at this site are promising for the discovery of additional remains of H. laietanus in the near future.

The facial skeleton of the chimpanzee-human last common ancestor

This review uses the current morphological evidence to evaluate the facial morphology of the hypothetical last common ancestor (LCA) of the chimpanzee/bonobo (panin) and human (hominin) lineages. Some of the problems involved in reconstructing ancestral morphologies so close to the formation of a lineage are discussed. These include the prevalence of homoplasy and poor phylogenetic resolution due to a lack of defining derived features. Consequently the list of hypothetical features expected in the face of the LCA is very limited beyond its hypothesized similarity to extant Pan. It is not possible to determine with any confidence whether the facial morphology of any of the current candidate LCA taxa (Ardipithecus kadabba, Ardipithecus ramidus, Orrorin tugenensis and Sahelanthropus tchadensis) is representative of the LCA, or a stem hominin, or a stem panin or, in some cases, a hominid predating the emergence of the hominin lineage. The major evolutionary trends in the hominin lineage subsequent to the LCA are discussed in relation to the dental arcade and dentition, subnasal morphology and the size, position and prognathism of the facial skeleton.

The orang-utan mating system and the unflanged male: A product of increased food stress during the late Miocene and Pliocene?

The orang-utan is unique among apes in having an unusually long male developmental period and two distinct adult male morphs (flanged and unflanged), which generally, but not exclusively, employ different reproductive strategies (call-and-wait vs. sneak-and-rape). Both morphs have recently been shown to have roughly similar levels of reproductive success in the one site where such a study has been conducted. This is in stark contrast to the unimale polygynous gorilla, in which dominant males sire almost all infants. Despite this, evidence on sexual dimorphism, life history, diet, and socioecology of extant and extinct apes, as well as the ontogeny, reproductive morphology, and physiology of extant apes, all indicate that the orang-utan's present-day mating system most likely evolved from a gorilla-like base, with one dominant male guarding a harem of females. The available evidence indicates that, due chiefly to the likely onset of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (generally regarded as the trigger for mast fruiting in dipterocarps) approximately 3-5Ma, southeast Asian forests would have begun to experience longer and more severe periods of low food availability. This change in food availability would have meant that full-time gregariousness was no longer energetically tolerable and, as a result, females dispersed more widely in search of food and adult/flanged males were no longer able to effectively guard a harem of females. A niche for a quiet, quick, opportunistic "sexual predator" (i.e., the unflanged male) then became available. This finding implies that, despite being anatomically quite chimpanzee-like, the ancestral hominoid probably had a social and mating system more similar to the gorilla than any other living ape.

Developmental changes in the shape of the supralaryngeal vocal tract in chimpanzees

The hyoid bone and larynx in human neonates are positioned as high as in other mammals. However, during postnatal life, they descend relative to the hard palate more rapidly compared with the horizontal growth of the oral cavity. This process is completed through the descent of the laryngeal skeleton relative to the hyoid, and through the descent of the hyoid relative to the cranial base. Thus, the human supralaryngeal vocal tract (SVT) develops to form a two-tube configuration with equally long horizontal and vertical parts. Longitudinal studies on living chimpanzee infants show that the descent of the larynx is more rapid than the horizontal growth of the oral cavity. This is primarily attributed to the descent of their larynges relative to the hyoid bone, but this is not accompanied by the descent of the hyoid. The present study, using embalmed specimens of chimpanzees, also shows that the horizontal and vertical parts of the SVT grow in chimpanzees similarly to humans during infancy. However, in chimpanzees, the horizontal part of the SVT grows greatly, whereas the vertical part of the SVT grows only slightly during the juvenile period. As a result, the chimpanzee larynx does not descend rapidly relative to the oral elongation during that period. Such differences may be related to the structural and morphological development of the facial skeleton and mandible, which affects prognathism and hyoid descent. These results support the hypothesis that the descent of the larynx evolved in at least two steps during hominoid evolution.
