Abstract
Two international guidelines published on the management of Asherman syndrome (AS) have made recommendations on various adjuvant methods to prevent intrauterine reformation. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these methods when used in primary or secondary prevention settings is different. Our aim is to assess the effectiveness of various adjuvant methods for the secondary prevention of intrauterine adhesions (IUAs). Articles were considered eligible if they included subjects with AS before surgery and compared a chosen method with either a control or a comparison group (using another method). The primary outcome was the IUA reformation rate at follow-up hysteroscopy. A total of 29 studies [15 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and 14 cohort studies] were included. Adhesion reformation with various methods to prevented IUA reformation when compared with controls were: second-look hysteroscopy: [risk ratio (RR): 0.21, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.05-0.90 (p = 0.02)]; intrauterine contraceptive device: RR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.36-1.12 (p = 0.12); continuous intrauterine balloon: RR: 0.18, 95% CI: 0.05-0.68 (p = 0.01); intermittent intrauterine balloon: RR: 0.50, 95% CI: 0.31-0.80 (p = 0.004); anti-adhesion gel: RR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.58-1.10 (p = 0.17); amnion graft: RR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.44-0.91 (p = 0.01).

Abstract
UNLABELLED Adhesion is a leading cause of small bowel obstruction. Adhesive small bowel obstruction has significant challenges in diagnosis, treatment and prevention with considerable impact on morbidity and socioeconomic burden. Small bowel obstruction caused by adhesion or any other aetiology is clinically indistinguishable due to similar clinical presentation. Computed Tomography scans and water-soluble contrast studies are more specific in diagnosis and possess value in predicting the need for surgery. Surgical management is indicated only in complicated cases or failed conservative treatments with the majority resolving with non-operative management. However, there is no clear-cut consensus about the timing of operative intervention. Meticulous surgical practice is the keystone in preventing adhesion formation despite the availability of numerous pharmacological and surgical strategies. This review aims to update the current knowledge of the pathophysiology of adhesion formation, treatment options and various prevention modalities of adhesive small bowel obstruction. Abstract
Free flap surgery is currently the only successful method used by surgeons to reconstruct critical-sized defects of the jaw, and is commonly used in patients who have had bony lesions excised due to oral cancer, trauma, infection or necrosis. However, donor site morbidity remains a significant flaw of this strategy. Various biomaterials have been under investigation in search of a suitable alternative for segmental mandibular defect reconstruction. Hydrogels are group of biomaterials that have shown their potential in various tissue engineering applications, including bone regeneration, both through in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical animal trials. This review discusses different types of hydrogels, their fabrication techniques, 3D printing, their potential for bone regeneration, outcomes, and the limitations of various hydrogels in preclinical models for bone tissue engineering. This review also proposes a modified technique utilizing the potential of hydrogels combined with scaffolds and cells for efficient reconstruction of mandibular segmental defects.

Abstract
Postoperative adhesion, bonding of the abdominal wall to damaged organs, causes severe complications after abdominal surgery. Despite the availability of physical barriers (i.e., solutions, films, and hydrogels), adhesion prevention materials that are a single-substance system with stability in wet tissue and ease of use have not been reported. Here, we report a microparticle based, sprayable adhesion prevention material comprising decyl group modified Alaska pollock gelatin (C10-ApGltn). C10-ApGltn microparticles (C10-MPs) were prepared by a coacervation method, freeze drying, and thermal crosslinking. The C10-MPs adhered to and formed a colloidal gel layer on intestinal serosal tissue by hydration without any crosslinking agents. After hydration of the C10-MPs, the resulting colloidal gel layer did not adhere to other tissues. Additionally, the C10-MP colloidal gel layer formed on the stomach serosal tissue showed stability when submersed in saline for 2 days. The colloidal gel layer also showed tissue followability. An in vivo rat adhesion model revealed that C10-MP colloidal gel layer on the cecum and abdominal wall defects effectively reduced postoperative adhesion and induced tissue remodeling, including re-mesothelialization. Therefore, C10-MPs are a potential anti-adhesion material for preventing postoperative adhesion. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: We evaluated the postoperative adhesion prevention ability of a colloidal gel based on decyl group modified Alaska pollock gelatin (ApGltn) microparticles (C10-MPs). These microparticles are sprayable and form a colloidal gel with only hydration on the gastrointestinal tissue. We revealed that the modification of the decyl group into ApGltn improved the stability of C10-MP colloidal gel on the tissue by hydrophobic interaction in the in-vitro experiments. The gel prevented postoperative adhesion by being a physical barrier in the in-vivo rat adhesion model.

Abstract
Background Recent experimental studies using herbal extracts have shown the possibility of peripheral nerve regeneration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of herbal extracts on peripheral nerve regeneration in a rat sciatic nerve injury model. Methods A total of 53 rats were randomly assigned to a control group or one of four experimental groups. In all rats, the sciatic nerve was completely severed and microscopic epineural end-to-end neurorrhaphy was performed. Normal saline (2 mL) was topically applied to the site of nerve repair in the control group, whereas four different herbal extracts – 2 mL each of Astragalus mongholicus Bunge, Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino, Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux, or Paeonia lactiflora Pall. – were topically applied to the site of nerve repair in each experimental group. Nerve conduction studies were performed at an average of 11.9 weeks after the operation, and conduction velocity and proximal and distal amplitudes were measured. Biopsies were performed at an average of 13.2 weeks after the initial neurorrhaphy. The quality of nerve anastomosis and perineural adhesion to the surrounding soft tissues was macroscopically evaluated. The neuroma size at the site of the neurorrhaphy was microscopically measured, whereas the size of the scar tissue was evaluated relative to the diameter of the repaired nerve. Results The nerve conduction study results showed the highest nerve conduction velocity in the experimental group that used the Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino extract and the highest proximal and distal amplitudes in the experimental group that used the Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux extract. Macroscopic evaluations after the second operation showed that grade 2 perineural adhesion was found in 70.8% of rats. The mean neuroma size in the Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino, Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux, and Paeonia lactiflora Pall. groups showed statistically significant decreases relative to the control group. The mean scar tissue formation index in the Paeonia lactiflora Pall. group showed a statistically significant decrease relative to the control group. Conclusions The peripheral nerve regeneration effect of the herbal extracts was confirmed through decreased neuroma and scar tissue formation. Abstract
Postoperative peritoneal adhesion (PPA) is a prevalent incidence that generally happens during the healing process of traumatized tissues. It causes multiple severe complications such as intestinal obstruction, chronic abdominal pain, and female infertility. To prevent PPA, several antiadhesion materials and drug delivery systems composed of biomaterials are used clinically, and clinical antiadhesive is one of the important applications nowadays. In addition to several commercially available materials, like film, spray, injectable hydrogel, powder, or solution type have been energetically studied based on natural and synthetic biomaterials such as alginate, hyaluronan, cellulose, starch, chondroitin sulfate, polyethylene glycol, polylactic acid, etc. Moreover, many kinds of animal adhesion models, such as cecum abrasion models and unitary horn models, are developed to evaluate new materials' efficacy. A new animal adhesion model based on hepatectomy and conventional animal adhesion models is recently developed and a new adhesion barrier by this new model is also developed. In summary, many kinds of materials and animal models are studied; thus, it is quite important to overview this field's current progress. Here, PPA is reviewed in terms of the species of biomaterials and animal models and several problems to be solved to develop better antiadhesion materials in the future are discussed.

Abstract
Cryopreservation is an essential part of tissue banking and effective cryopreservation methods are critical for the development of cost-effective cell therapy products. Cell sheets are an attractive subset of cell therapy types, and cryopreservation has the potential to further drive down costs of allogeneic cell sheet therapy. This is currently a challenge as adhered cell monolayers are more susceptible to membrane damage during the freezing process. In this article, we investigate the performance of a surface-modified dressing for the cryopreservation of cells and strategies to improve cell recovery. Cryopreservation of multipotent adult progenitor cells (MAPC®) was performed on cells following their attachment to a surface for different periods of time. MAPC cells, given just 1 h to attach, washed off and were not recovered on the surface following thawing. Cells attached for longer periods, elongated further, and were more susceptible to damage from cryopreservation. A temporal window was identified that could allow cryopreservation on adherent surfaces where cells had attached to a surface without full elongation. By functionalizing the surface with coupled hyaluronic acid, cell spreading was initially retarded, thereby widening this temporal window. This approach demonstrates a novel method for enhancing the recovery of cryopreserved cell sheets on surfaces.

Abstract
Background: Peritendinous adhesion that simultaneous with tendon healing link the healing tendon to the surrounding tissue. It results in functional disability, and has a significant adverse impact on health as well as social and economic development. Methods: Based on a search in the PubMed and Web of Science database, the research articles were screened by their time, main idea, impact factor index, while the ones with no credibility were excluded. Afterwards, we go through the analysis of the reliability and characteristics of the results were further screened from selected articles. Results: A total of 17 biomaterials used to evaluate the adhesion mechanism and the properties of the material were found. All of these biomaterials contained randomized controlled studies and detailed descriptions of surgical treatment that support the reliability of their results which indicates that biomaterials act as barriers to prevent the formation of adhesion, and most of them exhibit satisfactory biocompatibility, biodegradability or selective permeability. Moreover, a few had certain mechanical strength, anti-inflammatory, or carrier capacities. However, there still existed some defects, such as time, technology, clinical trials, material targeting and different measurement standards which also lowered the reliability of their results. Conclusion: In future, anti-adhesion biomaterials should focus on affordable raw materials with wide sources, and the production process should be simplified, in this way, the versatility and targeting of materials will be improved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adhesion formation is a critical issue in surgery, particularly in hepatectomy. The present study aimed to develop a bilayer adhesion barrier comprising alginate (Alg) of different molecular weight (Mw). It was expected that a slowly dissolving layer remains on the cut surface, functioning as a physical barrier, whereas a rapidly dissolving layer widely distributes in the peritoneal cavity to prevent de novo adhesions. METHODS Bilayer Alg sponges were fabricated using low Mw Alg for the upper layer and high Mw Alg for the bottom layer. The dissolution behavior of each layer was evaluated in vitro in peritoneum-like environments. We constructed a Pean crush hepatectomy-induced adhesion model in rats. The effects of the bilayer sponge on cut surface and de novo adhesions were separately evaluated in terms of their extent and grade. RESULTS The Alg sponge layer with low Mw dissolved faster than that with high Mw in vitro. One week after the hepatectomy, although no significant decrease in adhesion extent on the cut surface was observed in rats that received Seprafilm and Interceed, treatment with Alg bilayer sponge significantly decreased the adhesion extent to 38% of that without treatment. Moreover, a significant decrease in de novo adhesion extent was observed in the Alg bilayer sponge compared with the Interceed group. CONCLUSIONS The Alg bilayer sponge was effective for preventing both cut surface and de novo adhesions in the rat Pean crush hepatectomy model. The simple yet functional design of the Alg bilayer sponge can facilitate its use in future clinical practice.

Abstract
Background Hyaluronan (HA) is a ubiquitous component of the extracellular matrix. HA and its derivatives have been used in the sinuses to reduce scarring and possibly promote wound healing. However, in recent animal studies, HA esters exhibited inflammatory effects. Mitomycin C (MMC) is another potential antiscarring treatment. This study prospectively evaluated the effects of three different HA constructs on wound healing in the rabbit maxillary sinus: (i) a novel cross-linked HA hydrogel, (ii) the cross-linked HA gel containing covalently bound MMC, and (iii) a commercially available woven HA ester (Merogel). Methods Ostia were created with a 4-mm otologic drill in the maxillary sinuses of 15 New Zealand white rabbits with one side randomly chosen for treatment. After 14 or 21 days the size of the maxillary ostia were recorded and the tissue was examined under light microscopy. Results Sinuses treated with the novel HA and HA-MMC hydrogels showed an increased ostial diameter compared with untreated controls. Woven HA ester–treated sinuses showed no improvement, with a trend toward a smaller ostium than controls. Histological examination showed that woven HA ester tended to cause increased fibrosis and granulomatous inflammation, and heterophilia was slightly increased in the HA hydrogel-treated sinuses. Blinded observation noted foamy macrophages surrounding the residual woven HA ester in each specimen while no similar reaction was noted near the residual HA or HA-MMC hydrogels. Conclusion This study suggests that the degree of ostial narrowing, inflammation, and fibrosis depends on the formulation of the HA used. Minimal, if any, additional benefit is seen with addition of MMC to the HA hydrogel in this pilot study.

Abstract
Adhesion formation after abdominal and pelvic operations remains a challenging problem. Role of adjuvant barriers have been studied but there is no comparative study between liquid paraffin and hyaluronic acid as a barrier method. Hence, we planned to compare the effectiveness of 0.4 % hyaluronic acid and liquid paraffin in the prevention of postoperative intraperitoneal adhesions in rats. This prospective, randomized and controlled study was conducted in 60 adult Wistar albino rats. Surgical trauma by caecal abrasion and 1 g talcum powder was used in the rat model to induce adhesion formation. After trauma, 3 ml normal saline was instilled in the peritoneal cavity in control group (n = 20), 3 ml liquid paraffin was instilled in experimental group A (n = 20) and 3 ml 0.4 % hyaluronic acid was instilled in experimental group B (n = 20). Two weeks after laparotomy, repeat laparotomy was performed and the adhesions were scored according to Zuhlke classification. Liquid paraffin and hyaluronic acid both reduce the extent and grade of adhesions both macroscopically (p = 0.018, p = 0.017) and microscopically (p = 0.019, p = 0.019) respectively. Although there was significant reduction in adhesions by hyaluronic acid at certain specific sites as compared with liquid paraffin, its overall effectiveness in preventing postoperative intraperitoneal adhesions is not significantly different from liquid paraffin (p = 0.092, p = 0.193) respectively. The presence of liquid paraffin and hyaluronic acid in the peritoneal cavity reduce postoperative intraperitoneal adhesions significantly in rats. However, there is no overall significant difference in the effectiveness of two groups. Dosage and safety of these chemicals in human beings remains to be established.

Abstract
Aim To compare new remineralizing agents calcium sodium phosphosilicate paste and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) paste with that of fluoridated toothpaste in remineralization of early carious lesions using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis. Materials and methods Sixty sound extracted premolars were collected and placed in demineralizing solution for 4 days to produce artificial carious lesions. All specimens were evaluated for any loss of mineral content using SEM-EDX analysis. Samples were randomly assigned to three groups: Group I: Fluoridated toothpaste (control), group II: CPP-ACP paste, and group III: Calcium sodium phosphosilicate paste. Specimens were then treated with above-mentioned remineralizing agents and again measured for mineral content using SEM-EDX analysis. Results Group III (calcium sodium phosphosilicate paste) showed highest significant difference followed in descending order by group II (CPP-ACP paste) and group I (fluoridated toothpaste). Conclusion Calcium sodium phosphosilicate paste showed maximum remineralizing potential compared with CPP-ACP and fluoridated toothpastes. Abstract
Aim To evaluate the effectiveness of resin infiltration on artificial caries lesion by assessing the depth of resin penetration and the change in microhardness of lesion postinfiltration. Materials and methods Totally 45 human extracted premolars were used to create an artificial demineralized lesion in enamel using demineralizing solution. A total of 15 samples (group I) were infiltrated with resin. The depth of resin penetration was studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Other half (n = 30) of samples was equally divided into three subgroups and Vickers hardness number (VHN) values were obtained to measure the surface microhardness as group 11 a—before demineralization, 11 b—after demineralization, IIc—postresin infiltration. Results Mean depth of penetration in group I was 516.8 urn. There was statistically significant increase in VHN values of demineralized lesion postresin infiltration (independent Student’s t-test, p < 0.001). Conclusion Penetration depth of the resin infiltrant was deep enough to render beneficial effects, while significant increase in microhardness was observed postresin infiltration. Abstract
Aim Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to use emotions effectively and productively. It is becoming increasingly clear that these skills are one of the primary foundations for better performance of students in classrooms and in the society as well and EI provides the basis for competencies important "in almost every job." So we accessed the EI of teenagers as a guide of their academic score. Study design We analyzed the correlation of academic score to the EI of teenagers in regular schools and part-time unconventional coaching institute using the Bar-On Emotional Quotient questionnaire. Results and conclusion The results of our study showed that empathy and self-actualization were highly developed in students of regular conventional school than those attending part-time unconventional coaching institute. The academic score had a significantly positive correlation with empathy, whereas a significantly negative correlation with interpersonal relations. Empathy, interpersonal relation, and impulsive control were significantly higher in females than males. Therefore by inculcating and working toward development of EI in the young generation, we can hope to achieve a more positive environment. How to cite this article Sekhri P, Sandhu M, Sachdev V. Abstract
Background Oral clefts are among the common congenital birth defects with a broad phenotypic gamut. Since the epidermal ridges of the fingers and palms as well as the facial structures like lip, alveolus, and palate are formed from the same embryonic tissues during the same embryonic period, the genetic and environmental factors responsible for causing cleft lip and palate might also affect dermatoglyphic patterns. Aim Thus, study was undertaken to compare the dermato-glyphic pattern of children with orofacial clefts and normal children and to determine the correlation of dermatoglyphics with orofacial clefts. Materials and methods Total study sample consisted of 120 children in the age group of 3 to 16 years being divided into study and control groups. Dermatoglyphic data obtained from both control and study groups were then subjected to statistical analysis. Results Statistically no significant difference was found in the dermatoglyphic pattern and atd angle for both the groups. Conclusion It was observed that dermatoglyphics in orofacial clefts may not be distinctive. Further, large-scale studies are recommended to confirm the same. Abstract
Objective Cavity preparation is a surgical procedure that attempts to remove all infected dentin.1 Bacteria left beneath the filling material is greatest threat to the pulp. To reduce the potential for residual caries development and sensitivity, an antibacterial solution with the ability to disinfect the prepared tooth surface would be of help.2 So this study was conducted to evaluate and compare the effect of dentin disinfection with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (Consepsis) and 0.3% iodine (Ora5) on shear bond strength (SBS) of self-etch adhesives to dentin. Materials and methods Buccal surfaces of 36 caries-free permanent third molars were ground to expose dentin. All specimens were mounted on acrylic block, divided randomly into three groups, namely group I (control), group II (Con-sepsis), and group III (Ora5). After the application of cavity disinfectant and bonding procedures as per manufacturer’s instructions, composite cylinders were built. Then SBS was measured using universal testing machine. Results Statistical analysis of the measurements were made using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), which showed that when cavity disinfectants (Consepsis and Ora5) were used there was significant reduction in SBS of composite to dentin when compared with that of control group. Interpretation and conclusion The results indicate that the use of commercially available cavity disinfectants, Consepsis containing 2% chlorhexidine gluconate and Ora5 containing 0.3% iodine and 0.15% potassium iodide with self-etch adhesive (Adper Prompt), would significantly lower SBS of composite to dentin. Aims and objectives The purpose of this study is to determine the appropriate reference standard for eruption timing of primary teeth in infants and preschool children of Bhopal city and to determine the role of various factors affecting the eruption of primary dentition. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among the infants and preschool children (4-36 months) attending the local government or private hospitals, and vaccination centers. Prior to the study, Institutional Ethical Committee clearance and informed written consent from the parents were obtained. The data were collected from full-term infants and preschool children of 4 to 36 months from Bhopal city. Oral examination was done under adequate natural light by a single examiner using mouth mirror and probe. Teeth present in the oral cavity were noted by using Federation Dentaire Internationale system of nomenclature in the preformed pro-forma. The teeth were considered as erupted, when any part of its crown had penetrated the gingiva and was visible in the oral cavity. Height, weight, birth weight, and other close-ended questions in questionnaire were asked from parents. Results and conclusion The data collected were statistically analyzed and it was observed that significant relation exists between tooth eruption and birth weight, feeding habits, socioeconomic status, and body mass index (BMI). Based on the findings, it may be concluded that Indian children experienced delayed eruption of primary teeth when compared with children of different countries and standard norms. Abstract
Introduction Bacteria and their products play a primary etiological role in the initiation and perpetuation of pulpoperiapical pathosis. Intracanal medication is important for endodontic success as it eliminates microorganisms that persist after chemomechanical preparation. Aim To compare antimicrobial efficacy of calcium hydroxide powder, triple antibiotic paste, calcium hydroxide with 2% chlorhexidine solution, and triple antibiotic paste with 2% chlorhexidine solution. Materials and methods A total of 48 nonvital primary teeth were included in this study. After access opening first microbiological sample (s1) was collected by using absorbent paper point introducing into canal. Second microbilogical sample (s2) was taken following chemomechanical preparation and the teeth were divided into four groups: Group I: calcium hydroxide (CH) powder with distilled water; group II: CH with 2% chlorhexidine solution; group III: triple antibiotic powder with distilled water; group IV: triple antibiotic paste with 2% chlorhexidine solution. Then the canals were filled with any one group of the medicament and cavity was temporarily sealed with zinc oxide eugenol. After 1 week, a postmedication sample (s3) was collected. Then the canal was filled with Metapex, restored with glass ionomer cement. Conclusion From the experiments carried out in this study, with the limitations, an inference can be drawn that a combination of antimicrobial agent used as intracanal medicament is definitely better than single agent like Ca(OH)2. Abstract
Introduction With greater awareness worldwide, the use of herbs and herbal products has increased to a large extent. Objective To evaluate and compare the antimicrobial efficacy of green tea, garlic with lime, and 0.05% sodium fluoride (NaF) mouth rinses against Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacilli species, and Candida albicans. Materials and methods A total of 45 children aged 4 to 6 years with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC; based on decayed extracted filled [defs] score) were selected. Children were divided randomly into three equal groups and were asked to rinse with the prescribed mouth rinse once daily for 2 weeks after breakfast under supervision. A base-line and postrinsing nonstimulated whole salivary sample (2 mL) was collected and tested for the number of colony-forming units (CFUs). The data were statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 software with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s post hoc test. Results A statistically significant fall in colony count was found with the three mouth rinses in S. mutans (p < 0.001, p < 0.001) and Lactobacilli spp. (p < 0.001, p < 0.001), but not against C. albicans (p = 0.264, p = 0.264). On comparison, no statistically significant difference was found against S. mutans (p = 1, p = 0.554, p = 0.572), lactobacilli spp. (p = 0.884, p = 0.999, p = 0.819), and C. albicans (p = 0.999, p = 0.958, p = 0.983). Conclusion The findings of this study indicate that green tea and garlic with lime mouth rinse can be an economical alternative to NaF mouth rinse both for prevention and therapeutics. Abstract
Background The medicament formocresol (FC) used for pulpotomy in primary teeth has great concerns regarding its toxicity due to one of its constituent formaldehyde which acts by tissue fixation. Therefore, new medicaments were introduced which claimed preservation and regeneration of pulp. Aim The present study is aimed to compare and evaluate the clinical and radiographic success of FC, pulpotec, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and emdogain (EMD) as pulpotomy medicaments in human primary molars. Design A sample of 21 patients with 84 teeth were selected. All the patients have at least four teeth eligible for pulpotomy according to selection criteria. In each mouth, the teeth selected were randomly allocated into four groups with 21 each. Results After 24 months of follow-up, the clinical success rates were FC (94%), pulpotec (94%), MTA (100%), and EMD (83%) and radiographically FC (88%), pulpotec (83%), MTA (94%), and EMD (72%), which were statistically not significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion The outcome of this study demonstrates MTA has a high success rate compared with FC, pulpotec, and EMD as pulpotomy agent. Abstract
Peritoneal adhesions are seen frequently after abdominal surgery and can cause serious complications. We aimed to evaluate the effects of the oral use of diclofenac sodium and ellagic acid on formation of postoperative adhesions in rats Studies have shown that agents with anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant substances can prevent adhesion by decreasing oxidative stress. We compared and evaluated the effects of ellagic acid that has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory diclofenac sodium on peritoneal adhesion development in our experimental study. Laparotomy was performed with a midline incision under general anesthesia and an adhesion model was created on the antimesenteric side of the cecum in Groups I, II, and III. Group I received 85 mg/kg ellagic acid and Group II, 50 mg/kg diclofenac sodium through the nasogastric catheter while Group III received no medication. Only laparotomy was performed in Group IV. The rats were sacrificed at the end of the 14th day. Following macroscopic scoring, tissue samples were removed and subjected to biochemical and histopathologic evaluation. The degree of adhesion and the malondialdehyde level were decreased (P < 0.05), and glutathione level increased (P < 0.05) in Group I compared to Group II and Group III. The effects of ellagic acid on the prevention of peritoneal adhesion were found to be stronger than diclofenac sodium. This can be explained by the fact that ellagic acid is a strong antioxidant and decreases oxidative stress with anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic effects.

Abstract
Objectives Ankaferd has been used as a blood-stopping agent and it may also have an anti-inflammatory effect. We investigated the efficacy of Ankaferd in preventing postoperative pericardial adhesions in an experimental rabbit model. Methods Sixteen New Zealand white rabbits were used and categorised into two groups: an Ankaferd and a control group. The Ankaferd group of rabbits was treated with a sponge impregnated with Ankaferd solution, which was applied over the abraded epicardium. A sponge impregnated with 0.9% isotonic NaCl solution was applied to the control group using the same protocol. Scores for adhesion and visibility of coronary vessels were graded by macroscopic examination, and pericardial tissues were analysed microscopically in terms of inflammation and fibrosis. Results In the Ankaferd group, the adhesion scores were significantly higher than in the control group (p = 0.007). When the groups were compared according to the prevalence of fibrosis and degree of inflammation, the Ankaferd group was found to be statistically significantly different from the control group in terms of prevalence of fibrosis (p = 0.028). Conclusion Topical application of Ankaferd to prevent postoperative pericardial adhesions increased adhesion and fibrosis scores.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The open abdominal (OA) approach is a management strategy used in the most severely injured trauma patients. In addition to the morbidity and mortality, a major challenge is the gradual development of dense adhesions that make reoperations progressively more difficult. This randomized, prospective, proof-of-concept study was conducted to determine the effect of carboxymethylcellulose sodium hyaluronate adhesion barrier (CMHAB; Seprafilm, Genzyme Biosurgery, Bridgewater, NJ) on abdominal adhesions and wound characteristics in trauma open abdomens. METHODS A prospective, randomized, controlled study of wound and adhesion characteristics with or without CMHAB was conducted at 5 level I trauma centers. Consenting patients were randomized to either CMHAB or no adhesion barrier (NAB) groups. We evaluated patient demographics, injury characteristics/severity, reason for OA management, wound sizes (transverse/longitudinal), Zuhlke adhesion score, abdominal contamination score, hospital/intensive care durations of stay, morbidity, and mortality. RESULTS Thirty patients were enrolled (17 randomized to CMHAB; 13 randomized to NAB) with mean age of 40.3, Injury Severity Score of 30, Abbreviated Injury Score (AIS)-abdomen of 3.68, APACHE II score of 14.4, and 67% blunt trauma mechanism. The groups were well-matched with regard to age, sex, Injury Severity Score/abdominal AIS, penetrating/blunt injury rates, initial lactate/base deficit, mortality, OA indications, and contamination scores. There were no differences in nonabdominal or abdominal complications (ie, fistula, abscess, wound related) between the groups. Patients with CMHAB had shorter intensive care unit durations of stay (15 vs 22 days; P < .05). Intraoperative adhesion scores were not different during the first four operations but diverged significantly at the 5th operative intervention or after about 1 week of OA therapy. After the 5th operation, adhesion scores in the NAB group were 67% greater (approximately 1 Zuhlke point) than the CMHAB group. We did not note differences between wound sizes over time, closure types, or wound closure characteristics between CMHAB and NAB. CONCLUSION Although CMHAB did not eliminate adhesions in this proof-of-concept study, it limited their severity, particularly in abdomens left open >9 days or requiring ≥5 operations. There was no difference in wound sizes, overall or abdominal complications, or mortality between the groups. Further research is warranted to better delineate potential benefits of CMHAB, especially in the setting of reoperations in post-OA patients.

Abstract
The effectiveness of rheological blends of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) and low molecular weight hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) in the prevention of peritoneal adhesions post-surgery is demonstrated. The physical mixture of the two carbohydrates increased the dwell time in the peritoneum while significantly improving the injectability of the polymer compared with HA alone. HA-HPMC treatment decreased the total adhesion area by ∼ 70% relative to a saline control or no treatment in a repeated cecal injury model in the rabbit. No significant cytotoxicity and minimal inflammation were associated with the blend. Furthermore, no chemical or physical processing was required prior to their use beyond simple mixing.

Abstract
Designing of biologically active scaffolds with optimal characteristics is one of the key factors for successful tissue engineering. Recently, hydrogels have received a considerable interest as leading candidates for engineered tissue scaffolds due to their unique compositional and structural similarities to the natural extracellular matrix, in addition to their desirable framework for cellular proliferation and survival. More recently, the ability to control the shape, porosity, surface morphology, and size of hydrogel scaffolds has created new opportunities to overcome various challenges in tissue engineering such as vascularization, tissue architecture and simultaneous seeding of multiple cells. This review provides an overview of the different types of hydrogels, the approaches that can be used to fabricate hydrogel matrices with specific features and the recent applications of hydrogels in tissue engineering. Special attention was given to the various design considerations for an efficient hydrogel scaffold in tissue engineering. Also, the challenges associated with the use of hydrogel scaffolds were described.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of intrauterine balloon, intrauterine contraceptive device and hyaluronic acid gel in the prevention of the adhesion reformation after hysteroscopic adhesiolysis for Asherman's syndrome. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cohort study of 107 women with Asherman's syndrome who were treated with hysteroscopic division of intrauterine adhesions. After hysteroscopic adhesiolysis, 20 patients had intrauterine balloon inserted, 28 patients had intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) fitted, 18 patients had hyaluronic acid gel instilled into the uterine cavity, and 41 control subjects did not have any of the three additional treatment measures. A second-look hysteroscopy was performed in all cases, and the effect of hysteroscopic adhesiolysis was scored by the American Fertility Society classification system. RESULTS Both the intrauterine balloon group and the IUD group achieved significantly (P<0.001) greater reduction in the adhesion score than that of the hyaluronic acid gel group and control group. The efficacy of the balloon was greater than that of the IUD (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in results between the hyaluronic acid gel group and the control groups. CONCLUSION The insertion of an intrauterine balloon or intrauterine device is more effective than the use of hyaluronic acid gel in the prevention of intra-uterine adhesion reformation.

Abstract
PURPOSE This aim of the study is to determine whether the use of Seprafilm reduces the incidence and the medical costs of adhesive bowel obstruction (ABO) in children. METHODS Pediatric patients undergoing laparotomy were prospectively assigned to the Seprafilm group, n = 441). A historical control group consisted of children without using Seprafilm (n = 409). The incidence of ABO during a 24-month follow-up period was compared between the groups. To clarify the cost-benefit relations, expenses for Seprafilm and medical costs for hospitalization related to ABO in the Seprafilm group were compared with the ABO-associated hospitalization costs in the control group. RESULTS The cumulative incidence rate of ABO in the control group was significantly higher than in the Seprafilm group (4.9% vs. 2.0%, p = 0.015). Nearly all cases that required adhesiolysis had adhesions to areas other than the incision in both groups. In cost-benefit analysis, cost per patient was $105 higher in the control group than in the Seprafilm group, but this did not reach significance (p = 0.63). CONCLUSIONS Seprafilm reduces the incidence of ABO in the pediatric patients undergoing laparotomy. Although associated medical costs in the Seprafilm group were not significantly reduced, use of Seprafilm did not lead to an increase in cost. Wider range of Seprafilm application or an additional anti-adhesion device may help in preventing adhesion to areas other than the incision.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the anti-adhesion efficacy of a bi-layer electrospun fibrous membrane consisting of hyaluronic acid-loaded poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) fibrous membrane as the inner layer and PCL fibrous membrane as the outer layer with a single-layer PCL electrospun fibrous membrane in a rat cecum abrasion model. The rat model utilized a cecal abrasion and abdominal wall insult surgical protocol. The bi-layer and PCL membranes were applied between the cecum and the abdominal wall, respectively. Control animals did not receive any treatment. After postoperative day 14, a visual semiquantitative grading scale was used to grade the extent of adhesion. Histological analysis was performed to reveal the features of adhesion tissues. Bi-layer membrane treated animals showed significantly lower adhesion scores than control animals (p < 0.05) and a lower adhesion score compared with the PCL membrane. Histological analysis of the bi-layer membrane treated rat rarely demonstrated tissue adhesion while that of the PCL membrane treated rat and control rat showed loose and dense adhesion tissues, respectively. Bi-layer membrane can efficiently prevent adhesion formation in abdominal cavity and showed a significantly decreased adhesion tissue formation compared with the control.

Abstract
Although hyaluronic acid (HA) has been conventionally utilized as a tissue adhesion barrier material, its rapid clearance in the body still remains as a big challenge in the clinical practice. In this study, we prepared a hydrogel of HA embedded in mildly crosslinked alginate (HA/mcALG hydrogel), which is injectable, easily covers injured tissues, and remains stably at the applied site during wound healing (by muco-adhesive HA embedded in the network structure of the mcALG hydrogel). The HA/mcALG hydrogel was highly effective for the prevention of peritoneal tissue adhesion compared to HA and mcALG hydrogels, and did not lead to any abnormal tissue responses during wound healing. The HA/mcALG hydrogel can be a good candidate as an injectable tissue adhesion barrier for clinical applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mitomycin-C has been in clinical use primarily as a chemotherapeutic agent and is well known for antifibrotic properties. It has been widely used to prevent postoperative fibroblast proliferation and reduce scar adhesion in ophthalmologic and otolaryngologic operations. We investigated the efficacy of mitomycin-C in reducing postoperative pericardial adhesions in a rabbit model. METHODS New Zealand white rabbits were used and categorized into 2 groups, study (use of mitomycin-C) and control. Group 1 (n = 8) was treated with a sponge impregnated with mitomycin-C solution that was applied over the abraded epicardium. In group 2 (control group), the sponge was impregnated with 0.9% isotonic NaCl solution and was applied with the same protocol as the mitomycin-C-impregnated sponge in group 1 (n = 8). Rabbits were humanely killed at a mean of 2 weeks. The scores of adhesion were graded by macroscopic examination, and the pericardial tissues were analyzed microscopically in terms of inflammation and fibrosis. RESULTS In group 1, the adhesion scores were significantly lower than the control group's. No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of the severity of inflammation. There was a difference between groups in terms of the degree of fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS The use of mitomycin-C to prevent postoperative pericardial adhesions reduced adhesion and fibrosis scores in an experimental rabbit model. However, efficacy in reducing inflammation was not demonstrated.

Abstract
The impact of hemostatic agents on postoperative adhesion formation has not been well studied. We hypothesized that hemostatic agents would be a significant nidus for adhesion formation and that a resorbable barrier would effectively reduce adhesions to hemostatic agents. Four commercial hemostatic agents, each composed of a different biomaterial matrix, were implanted in female Sprague-Dawley rats, and adhesion formation was examined 7 days after surgery. In separate studies, the effects of serosal trauma (via cecal abrasion), added blood, and the presence of chemically modified sodium hyaluronate/carboxymethylcellulose (HA/CMC) barrier on adhesion formation to hemostatic agents were studied. Significant adhesions formed to hemostatic agents even in the absence of traumatized tissue. When applied after cecal abrasion, the incidence of adhesions to the hemostatic agents increased. Addition of blood to this model increased adhesion formation even further, causing adhesions in every animal in the study. An HA/CMC adhesion barrier reduced adhesions to hemostatic agents in the presence of serosal trauma and maintained effectiveness even in the presence of blood. In conclusion, hemostatic agents potentiated adhesion formation at the site of application in a model without trauma. In more challenging models, their adhesiogenic contribution was overwhelmed by trauma and blood. HA/CMC adhesion barrier applied over hemostatic agents at the time of surgery provided significant protection against postoperative adhesions in these preclinical models.
