Characterization of polyalkylvinyl ether phases by solid-state and suspended-state nuclear magnetic resonance investigations

New Insights to Characterize Paint Varnishes and to Study Water in Paintings by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR)

Paintings are complex multi-layered systems made of organic and inorganic materials. Several factors can affect the degradation of paintings, such as environmental conditions, past restoration works and, finally, the type of painting technique and the art materials used over the centuries. The chemical–physical characterization of paintings is a constant challenge that requires research into and the development of novel analytical methodologies and processes. In recent years, solvents and water-related issues in paintings are attracting more attention, and several studies have been focused on analyzing the interaction between water molecules and the constitutive materials. In this study, recent applications applying different NMR methodologies were shown, highlighting the weakness and the strength of the techniques in analyzing paintings. In particular, the study of water and its diffusive interactions within wall and oil paintings was performed to prove how the portable NMR can be used directly in museums for planning restoration work and to monitor the degradation processes. Furthermore, some preliminary results on the analysis of varnishes and binders, such us linseed oil, shellac, sandarac and colophony resins, were obtained by 1H HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy, highlighting the weakness and strengths of this technique in the field of conservation science.

High-resolution magic angle spinning (1) H NMR measurement of ligand concentration in solvent-saturated chromatographic beads

A method based on (1) H high-resolution magic angle spinning NMR has been developed for measuring concentration accurately in heterogeneous materials like that of ligands in chromatography media. Ligand concentration is obtained by relating the peak integrals for a butyl ligand in the spectrum of a water-saturated chromatography medium to the integral of the added internal reference. The method is fast, with capacity of 10 min total sample preparation and analysis time per sample; precise, with a reproducibility expressed as 1.7% relative standard deviation; and accurate, as indicated by the excellent agreement of derived concentration with that obtained previously by (13) C single-pulse excitation MAS NMR. The effects of radiofrequency field inhomogeneity, spin rate, temperature increase due to spinning, and distribution and re-distribution of medium and reference solvent both inside the rotor during spinning and between bulk solvent and pore space are discussed in detail. © 2016 The Authors Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

¹³C SPE MAS measurement of ligand concentration in compressible chromatographic beads

A method for measuring the ligand concentration in heterogeneous materials like chromatography media is described. In this method, (13)C single pulse excitation magic angle spinning NMR experiment with broadband (1)H decoupling is used to determine the peak integrals for a butyl ligand in the spectrum of a dried chromatography medium. Within a carefully controlled protocol, those integrals compared with that of the internal reference compound dimethyl sulfone provide the required volume concentration with an accuracy of ca 2%. The effects of temperature, degree of hydration, and other experimental parameters are discussed.

High resolution magic angle spinning NMR as a tool for unveiling the molecular enantiorecognition of omeprazole by amylose-based chiral phase

Polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases (CSP) demonstrate great versatility and higher chiral selectivity for a variety of chiral compounds in multimodal elution modes (normal, reverse and polar organic). The main role of CSP phenyl carbamate based derivatives as chiral selectors is the formation of diastereoisomeric complexes by means of π-π interaction, dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonding and/or inclusion complex mechanisms. Nevertheless, the mechanism behind their enantioselectivity requires clarification. High resolution magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H HR/MAS NMR) has provided key information on the recognition process at the binding sites of the CSP surface. Herein we report the results obtained using omeprazole as a probe for these investigations.

Role of chromatography in the development of Standard Reference Materials for organic analysis

The certification of chemical constituents in natural-matrix Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) can require the use of two or more independent analytical methods. The independence among the methods is generally achieved by taking advantage of differences in extraction, separation, and detection selectivity. This review describes the development of the independent analytical methods approach at NIST, and its implementation in the measurement of organic constituents such as contaminants in environmental materials, nutrients and marker compounds in food and dietary supplement matrices, and health diagnostic and nutritional assessment markers in human serum. The focus of this review is the important and critical role that separation science techniques play in achieving the necessary independence of the analytical steps in the measurement of trace-level organic constituents in natural matrix SRMs.

Conformational temperature dependence of a poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) stationary phase investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and liquid chromatography

A polymer-based RP sorbent was prepared by immobilizing a poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) copolymer with an acid mass fraction of 5% on silica by using a 3-glycidoxypropyl linkage. 13C cross-polarization/magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy of the sorbent, either in the dry state or suspended in the mobile phase, showed an increase in mobility at elevated temperatures. Alkyl chain segments with gauche conformations were more mobile than chain segments with trans conformations. The strength of the 13C-1H dipolar couplings in the alkyl chains was measured using the constant time dipolar and chemical shift pulse sequence, revealing less molecular motion for the trans conformation. Non-linear van't Hoff plots were observed for separations of shape-constrained solutes (such as geometric beta-carotene isomers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). At higher temperatures, the retention behavior was similar to that of monomeric C18 sorbents, whereas at ambient and lower temperatures, enhanced shape-selective properties were exhibited similar to those of polymeric C30 sorbents.

Characterization of lycopene nanoparticles combining solid-state and suspended-state NMR spectroscopy

The core-shell structure of lycopene micronizates can be verified by employing a combination of solid-state and suspended-state NMR spectroscopy. The type of molecular aggregation of carotenoid nanoparticles can be clearly determined from their characteristic fingerprint pattern in the solid-state NMR spectra.
