Estimation of additive genetic variance in commercial layer poultry and simulated populations under selection

Egg weight and reproduction traits in laying hens: estimation of direct and maternal genetic effects using Bayesian approach via Gibbs sampling

Fertility, generally considered as a trait of the two parents, is perhaps best defined as the interaction between the male and female gametes in the production of a viable zygote. Although zygote development and hatchability are traits of the embryo influenced by maternal effects, in most previous studies they have been considered to be female reproductive traits. The aim of this work was to study the influence of sire on fertility and hatchability traits and to estimate the (co)variance components of direct and maternal genetic effects under a Bayesian setting via Gibbs sampling. We measured the fertility of 6396 eggs and the hatchability of 5393 embryos on an individual basis. In addition, egg weight from 42 to 63 weeks of age (EW63) was recorded on an individual egg basis. The sire accounted for a significant amount of the variation infertility and hatchability. For direct heritability, the marginal posterior mean, for fertility and hatchability were almost equal (0·24). The maternal heritabilities for fertility and hatchability were 0·20 and 0·18, respectively. The direct heritability value for the egg weight trait was high. The direct-direct genetic correlation between egg weight and hatchability was negative and significant. The genetic correlations between the direct effect of the egg weight trait and maternal effects for fertility and hatchability were low, with variable signs, and were not significant. On the other hand, significant negative genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects of fertility and hatchability were obtained (the posterior means were –0·56 for FE and –0·55 for HC).

Heritabilities and genetic correlations of economic traits in Iranian native fowl and estimated genetic trend and inbreeding coefficients

1. Genetic parameters were estimated in a base population of a closed experimental strain of fowl. Data were obtained on 21 245 Iranian native hens (breeding centre for Fars province) subject to 8 successive generations of selection. This population had been selected for body weight at 12 weeks of age (BW12) and egg number during the first 12 weeks of the laying period (EN), mean egg weight (EW) at weeks 28, 30 and 32, and age at sexual maturity (ASM). 2. The method of multi-traits restricted maximum likelihood with an animal model was used to estimate genetic parameters. Resulting heritabilities for BW12, EN, EW and ASM were 0.68 +/- 0.02, 0.40 +/- 0.02, 0.64 +/- 0.02 and 0.49 +/- 0.02, respectively. 3. Genetic correlations between BW12 and EN, EW and ASM were 0.11 +/- 0.33, 0.54 +/- 0.21 and -0.12 +/- 0.03, respectively. Genetic correlations between EN and EW and ASM were -0.09 +/- 0.03 and -0.85 +/- 0.01, respectively, while between EW and ASM, it was 0.05 +/- 0.03. 4. The overall predicted genetic gains, after 7 generations of selection, estimated by the regression coefficients of the breeding value on generation number were equal to 22.7, 0.17, 0.04 and -1.38, for BW12, EN, EW and ASM, respectively. 5. A pedigree file of 21 245 female and male birds was used to calculate inbreeding coefficients and their influence on production and reproduction traits. Average inbreeding coefficients for all birds, inbred birds, female birds and male birds were 0.048, 0.673, 0.055 and 0.047%, respectively. Regression coefficients of BW12, ASM, EN and EW on inbreeding coefficient for all birds were equal to 0.51 +/- 0.001, 0.31 +/- 0.003, -0.51 +/- 0.003 and 0.03 +/- 0.001, respectively.

Estimation of heritability for heterophil:lymphocyte ratio in chickens by restricted maximum likelihood. Effects of age, sex, and crossing

The objectives of the current study were to estimate the heritability of the heterophil to lymphocyte ratio and to evaluate the effects of age, sex, and crossing on that ratio. There were three different experiments. In Experiment 1, we used a total of 711 birds from two generations with complete pedigree of a Spanish breed of chickens (Quail Castellana) to estimate the heritability for the leukocyte ratio at 36 wk of age by restricted maximum likelihood. The estimated heritability (0.59 +/- 0.09) indicated that leukocyte ratio should easily respond to selection. Heritabilities for heterophil and lymphocyte numbers were also high (0.56 +/- 0.07 and 0.65 +/- 0.07). In Experiment 2, leukocyte ratio differences among ages and sexes were investigated at 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, and 36 wk, in 576 birds from the same breed. Males showed significantly greater heterophil to lymphocyte ratios than females at the onset of sexual maturity and as adults. Significant variations with age for leukocyte ratio were observed in both sexes, which were mainly related to onset of sexual maturity, from which the leukocyte ratio increased more or less continuously. In females, the effect of age was also significant on heterophil and lymphocyte numbers. Finally, in Experiment 3, crossing effects were evaluated in 96 birds from a cross between the Quail Castellana and a White Leghorn population at 8 wk of age. The negative heterosis percentages found in the F1 and F2 generations were significant (-26% and -36%, respectively).

Genetic parameters for egg number, egg weight, and eggshell color in three Catalan poultry breeds

Heritabilities for egg number, egg weight, and eggshell color (percentage light absorbance) at 39 wk of age, and the genetic correlations between them were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood in three Catalan poultry breeds: Penedesenca Negra (PN), Prat Lleonada (PL), and Empordanesa Roja (ER). Additive genetic differences between these breeds were also estimated. Data were from the IRTA Poultry Genetic Conservation Program and consisted of records from 1,309 PN, 1,466 PL, and 1,440 ER hens, which were obtained from 80 contemporary batches per breed hatched between 1987 and 1992. Estimates of heritability for egg number, egg weight, and eggshell color were, 0.20, 0.59, and 0.49 for PN, 0.31, 0.48, and 0.53 for PL; and 0.33, 0.50, and 0.27 for ER. Estimated genetic correlations between egg number and egg weight, egg number and shell color, and egg weight and shell color were, for PN, -0.22, -0.03, and 0.00; for PL, -0.21, -0.06, and 0.09; and -0.19, -0.29, and 0.30 for ER. Heritability for eggshell color and genetic correlation between eggshell color and other traits showed a different genetic pattern in ER breed. Significant additive genetic differences (P < 0.05) were found between ER and PN base populations for egg number (3.89), egg weight (0.91), and eggshell color (-3.50); and between ER and PL for egg number (6.69) and eggshell color (35.39). The PN and PL breeds differed significantly (P < 0.05) for eggshell color (38.22), which was darker in PN. These results could be taken as the expected genetic differences for these breeds.
