Reproductive biology of caridean decapods from the Weddell Sea

Hábitat y historia de vida de Pachychelles laevidactylus (Crustacea, Anomura, Porcellanidae) en el intermareal rocoso de Mar del Plata, Argentina

RESUMEN Se analizó la estructura del hábitat, el crecimiento relativo, la heteroquelia, la estructura poblacional, la madurez morfométrica y la fecundidad de Pachycheles laevidactylus Ortmann, 1892, durante Abril, Mayo y Junio del 2005, en sustratos naturales de Mar del Plata, Argentina (38°02'S, 57°31'W). La cobertura algal, la exposición al oleaje y el tiempo de inmersión varió de manera significativa entre estratos y entre meses. La morfometría de las quelas no manifestó diferencias entre sexos. Las hembras mostraron el abdomen más grande que los machos. Si bien existió la heteroquelia, no se detectó lateralidad. Las tallas (ancho de caparazón) estuvieron comprendidas entre 0.67 mm a 9.3 mm para los machos, y entre 1.07 mm a 10.65 mm, para las hembras. La densidad de organismos varió entre meses y entre los estratos. La estructura poblacional, para el periodo de estudio, se explicó en función de la estructura del hábitat. La madurez morfométrica de las hembras fue registrada a los 4.38 mm de ancho de caparazón. El número de huevos se correlacionó positivamente con la talla de las hembras ovígeras con un mínimo de 2 huevos y un máximo de 160, pero esa relación dependió del avance en el desarrollo de los embriones.

Diversity and distribution of deep-sea shrimps in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica

Although decapod crustaceans are widespread in the oceans, only Natantia (shrimps) are common in the Antarctic. Because remoteness, depth and ice cover restrict sampling in the South Ocean, species distribution modelling is a useful tool for evaluating distributions. We used physical specimen and towed camera data to describe the diversity and distribution of shrimps in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. Eight shrimp species were recorded: Chorismus antarcticus; Notocrangon antarcticus; Nematocarcinus lanceopes; Dendrobranchiata; Pasiphaea scotiae; Pasiphaea cf. ledoyeri; Petalidium sp., and a new species of Lebbeus. For the two most common species, N. antarcticus and N. lanceopes, we used maximum entropy modelling, based on records of 60 specimens and over 1130 observations across 23 sites in depths from 269 m to 3433 m, to predict distributions in relation to environmental variables. Two independent sets of environmental data layers at 0.05° and 0.5° resolution respectively, showed how spatial resolution affected the model. Chorismus antarcticus and N. antarcticus were found only on the continental shelf and upper slopes, while N. lanceopes, Lebbeus n. sp., Dendrobranchiata, Petalidium sp., Pasiphaea cf. ledoyeri, and Pasiphaea scotiae were found on the slopes, seamounts and abyssal plain. The environmental variables that contributed most to models for N. antarcticus were depth, chlorophyll-a concentration, temperature, and salinity, and for N. lanceopes were depth, ice concentration, seabed slope/rugosity, and temperature. The relative ranking, but not the composition of these variables changed in models using different spatial resolutions, and the predicted extent of suitable habitat was smaller in models using the finer-scale environmental layers. Our modelling indicated that shrimps were widespread throughout the Ross Sea region and were thus likely to play important functional role in the ecosystem, and that the spatial resolution of data needs to be considered both in the use of species distribution models.

Thermal limits and adaptation in marine Antarctic ectotherms: an integrative view

A cause and effect understanding of thermal limitation and adaptation at various levels of biological organization is crucial in the elaboration of how the Antarctic climate has shaped the functional properties of extant Antarctic fauna. At the same time, this understanding requires an integrative view of how the various levels of biological organization may be intertwined. At all levels analysed, the functional specialization to permanently low temperatures implies reduced tolerance of high temperatures, as a trade-off. Maintenance of membrane fluidity, enzyme kinetic properties (Km and k(cat)) and protein structural flexibility in the cold supports metabolic flux and regulation as well as cellular functioning overall. Gene expression patterns and, even more so, loss of genetic information, especially for myoglobin (Mb) and haemoglobin (Hb) in notothenioid fishes, reflect the specialization of Antarctic organisms to a narrow range of low temperatures. The loss of Mb and Hb in icefish, together with enhanced lipid membrane densities (e.g. higher concentrations of mitochondria), becomes explicable by the exploitation of high oxygen solubility at low metabolic rates in the cold, where an enhanced fraction of oxygen supply occurs through diffusive oxygen flux. Conversely, limited oxygen supply to tissues upon warming is an early cause of functional limitation. Low standard metabolic rates may be linked to extreme stenothermy. The evolutionary forces causing low metabolic rates as a uniform character of life in Antarctic ectothermal animals may be linked to the requirement for high energetic efficiency as required to support higher organismic functioning in the cold. This requirement may result from partial compensation for the thermal limitation of growth, while other functions like hatching, development, reproduction and ageing are largely delayed. As a perspective, the integrative approach suggests that the patterns of oxygen- and capacity-limited thermal tolerance are linked, on one hand, with the capacity and design of molecules and membranes, and, on the other hand, with life-history consequences and lifestyles typically seen in the permanent cold. Future research needs to address the detailed aspects of these interrelationships.

Fecundity and life-history strategies in marine invertebrates

The reproductive strategies of an organism play a major role in the dynamics of the population and the biogeography and continuity of the species. Numerous processes are involved in reproduction leading to the production of offspring. Although diverse processes are involved in oogenesis (the production of eggs) and spermatogenesis (the production of sperm), the basic patterns of gametogenesis are similar amongst invertebrates, with the proliferation and differentiation of germ cells leading to the final production of mature gametes. The production of gametes, especially eggs, is energetically expensive, and therefore strongly sensitive to selective pressures. An organism can ingest and assimilate a limited amount of energy from the environment. The different ways by which energy is allocated to growth and reproduction in order to maximize fitness forms the basis of the differing life-history strategies that have developed in marine invertebrates. Fecundity is defined as the number of offspring produced by a female in a determined time period. The term fecundity needs to be explicitly defined in each study in order to obtain the maximum information from the data analysed. Because of the variety of egg production patterns found among marine invertebrates, a wide range of methodologies has been developed to quantify fecundity. These include direct egg counts in brooding species, spawning induction in live individuals and histological studies of preserved material. Specific considerations need to be taken into account for colonial organisms, because of their modular organization. The production of eggs requires an optimal allocation of energy into growth and reproduction for the maximization of parental fitness. Fecundity is central in studies of life-history theory and in the development of life-history models because it is directly related to energy allocation and partitioning. There are important relationships and trade-offs between fecundity and other life-history traits, such as egg size, female size and age, age at first reproduction, reproductive effort and residual reproductive value. These trade-offs, together with morpho-functional constraints and genetic variation determine the evolution of life histories through natural selection. Fecundity is a highly plastic character within the limits defined by the bioenergetics and life-history strategy of the organism. Egg production is affected mainly by environmental factors such as food quantity and quality, temperature or presence of toxic elements in the habitat. The differences in fecundity found among closely related species from different biogeographical locations reflect, at least in part, the differing environmental conditions of their habitat.
