Morphological Aspects and Microscopic Analyses of Fibrous Tunic and Uveal Components in Bovine Eye

This study aimed to reveal the anatomical features of the bovine eye by scanning electron and light microscopic methods. For this purpose, a total of 40 eyes were evaluated. Gross and microscopic characteristics of the cornea, sclera, ciliary body, choroid, iris, and lens were determined. Bowman's and Descemet's membranes of the cornea were quite dense and prominent. Collagen lamellae of the cornea were wavy in the periphery and more parallel to the basal and metachromatic fibroblasts were noted. Three to four ciliary plicae merged to form ciliary processes. The presence of prominent intermediate bands connecting the ciliary plicae was determined. The zonular fibrils merged and attached to the lens in the form of thick zonular bands. A dense corpora nigra was present at the rectangular pupillary border of the iris. Tapetum fibrosum, consisting of polygonal tapetal cells, was in blue-yellow-green color and covered most of the choroid. A complex drainage system consisting of trabecular meshwork, angular aqueous plexus, ciliary sinus, and scleral venous vessels localized in a fairly wide iridocorneal angle was identified. Identifying structural features of the bovine eye is very important and useful for pathological evaluations, understanding species-specific physiological mechanisms and for operative interventions of ruminant species.

Adaptations for amphibious vision in sea otters (Enhydra lutris): structural and functional observations

Sea otters (Enhydra lutris) are amphibious mammals that maintain equal in-air and underwater visual acuity. However, their lens-based underwater accommodative mechanism presumably requires a small pupil that may limit sensitivity across light levels. In this study, we consider adaptations for amphibious living by assessing the tapetum lucidum, retina, and pupil dynamics in sea otters. The sea otter tapetum lucidum resembles that of terrestrial carnivores in thickness and fundic coverage. A heavily rod-dominated retina appears qualitatively similar to the ferret and domestic cat, and a thick outer nuclear layer relative to a thinner inner nuclear layer is consistent with nocturnal vertebrates and other amphibious carnivores. Pupil size range in two living sea otters is smaller relative to other amphibious marine carnivores (pinnipeds) when accounting for test conditions. The pupillary light response seems slower than other aquatic and terrestrial species tested in comparable brightness, although direct comparisons require further assessment. Our results suggest that sea otters have retained features for low-light vision but rapid adjustments and acute underwater vision may be constrained across varying light levels by a combination of pupil shape, absolute eye size, and the presumed coupling between anterior lens curvature and pupil size during accommodation.

Use of Ferrets in Toxicity Testing

A selective review of the literature is presented in order to introduce the reader to the extensive studies conducted in the ferret ( Mustela putorius furo) in such diverse fields as virology, gastroenterology, and teratology. Husbandry, anatomical variations, and the modeling of specific human disorders are discussed to indicate the increasing recognition of this species as a valuable asset in toxicity testing.

Comparing the retinal structures and functions in two species of gulls (Larus delawarensis and Larus modestus) with significant nocturnal behaviours

Ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) and gray gulls (Larus modestus) are two species active both by day and night. We have investigated the retinal adaptations that allow the diurnal and nocturnal behaviours of these two species. Electroretinograms and histological analyses show that both species have a duplex retina in which cones outnumber rods, but the number of rods appears sufficient to provide vision at night. Their retinas respond over the same scotopic dynamic range of 3.4logcdm(-2), which encompasses all of the light levels occurring at night in their photic environment. The amplitudes of the scotopic saturated a- and b-wave responses as well as the photopic saturated b-wave response and the photopic sensitivity parameter S are however higher in ring-billed gulls than in gray gulls. Moreover, the process of dark adaptation is about 30min faster in gray gulls than in ring-billed gulls. Our results suggest that both species have acquired in the course of their evolution functional adaptations that can be related to their specific photic environment.

Comparative morphology of the tapetum lucidum (among selected species)

OBJECTIVES

The phenomenon of 'eye-shine' is seen in a variety of animal species, and is generally thought to be related to the presence of an intraocular reflecting structure, the tapetum lucidum. The tapetum lucidum is a biologic reflector system that is a common feature in the eyes of vertebrates. It normally functions to provide the light-sensitive retinal cells with a second opportunity for photon-photoreceptor stimulation, thereby enhancing visual sensitivity at low light levels. The tapetum lucidum is presented here according to a classification based on the location, as well as the composition, of this reflective layer. Finally, the physical and chemical properties, as well as the origins of the different tapeta lucida, are discussed and compared.

METHODS

The anatomic and biochemical aspects of the tapetum lucidum in various vertebrates are examined. Morphologic observations were made from paraffin and plastic embedded specimens. Specimens were treated with traditional stains and observed by light and transmission electron microscopy.

RESULTS

Some species (primates, squirrels, birds, red kangaroo and pig) do not have this structure and they usually are diurnal animals. In vertebrates, the tapetum lucidum exhibits diverse structure, organization and composition. Therefore, the retinal tapetum (teleosts, crocodilians, marsupials, fruit bat), the choroidal guanine tapetum (elasmobranchs), the choroidal tapetum cellulosum (carnivores, rodents, cetacea), and the choroidal tapetum fibrosum (cow, sheep, goat, horse) are described.

CONCLUSIONS

The tapetum lucidum represents a remarkable example of neural cell and tissue specialization as an adaptation to a dim light environment and, despite these differences, all tapetal variants act to increase retinal sensitivity by reflecting light back through the photoreceptor layer. These variations regarding both its location and structure, as well as the choice of reflective material, may represent selective visual adaptations associated with their feeding behavior, in response to the use of specific wavelengths and amount of reflectance required.

Fine structure of the feline tapetum lucidum

The morphology of the tapetum lucidum of the domestic cat (Felis catus) was studied by electron microscopy. The tapetum is a tapetum cellulosum, localized in the choroid of the dorsal fundus. The cells comprising this structure are described.
