Canopy nitrogen distribution and the photosynthetic performance of sunflower crops during grain filling - a quantitative analysis

Diversity of responses to nitrogen deficiency in distinct wheat genotypes reveals the role of alternative electron flows in photoprotection

Nitrogen (N) deficiency represents an important limiting factor affecting photosynthetic productivity and the yields of crop plants. Significant reported differences in N use efficiency between the crop species and genotypes provide a good background for the studies of diversity of photosynthetic and photoprotective responses associated with nitrogen deficiency. Using distinct wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes with previously observed contrasting responses to nitrogen nutrition (cv. Enola and cv. Slomer), we performed advanced analyses of CO₂ assimilation, PSII, and PSI photochemistry, also focusing on the heterogeneity of the stress responses in the different leaf levels. Our results confirmed the loss of photosynthetic capacity and enhanced more in lower positions. Non-stomatal limitation of photosynthesis was well reflected by the changes in PSII and PSI photochemistry, including the parameters derived from the fast-fluorescence kinetics. Low photosynthesis in N-deprived leaves, especially in lower positions, was associated with a significant decrease in the activity of alternative electron flows. The exception was the cyclic electron flow around PSI that was enhanced in most of the samples with a low photosynthetic rate. We observed significant genotype-specific responses. An old genotype Slomer with a lower CO₂ assimilation rate demonstrated enhanced alternative electron flow and photorespiration capacity. In contrast, a modern, highly productive genotype Enola responded to decreased photosynthesis by a significant increase in nonphotochemical dissipation and cyclic electron flow. Our results illustrate the importance of alternative electron flows for eliminating the excitation pressure at the PSII acceptor side. The decrease in capacity of electron acceptors was balanced by the structural and functional changes of the components of the electron transport chain, leading to a decline of linear electron transport to prevent the overreduction of the PSI acceptor side and related photooxidative damage of photosynthetic structures in leaves exposed to nitrogen deficiency.

The effect of differential growth rates across plants on spectral predictions of physiological parameters

Leaves of various ages and positions in a plant's canopy can present distinct physiological, morphological and anatomical characteristics, leading to complexities in selecting a single leaf for spectral representation of an entire plant. A fortiori, as growth rates between canopies differ, spectral-based comparisons across multiple plants--often based on leaves' position but not age--becomes an even more challenging mission. This study explores the effect of differential growth rates on the reflectance variability between leaves of different canopies, and its implication on physiological predictions made by widely-used spectral indices. Two distinct irrigation treatments were applied for one month, in order to trigger the formation of different growth rates between two groups of grapevines. Throughout the experiment, the plants were physiologically and morphologically monitored, while leaves from every part of their canopies were spectrally and histologically sampled. As the control vines were constantly developing new leaves, the water deficit plants were experiencing growth inhibition, resulting in leaves of different age at similar nodal position across the treatments. This modification of the age-position correlation was characterized by a near infrared reflectance difference between younger and older leaves, which was found to be exponentially correlated (R(2) = 0.98) to the age-dependent area of intercellular air spaces within the spongy parenchyma. Overall, the foliage of the control plant became more spectrally variable, creating complications for intra- and inter-treatment leaf-based comparisons. Of the derived indices, the Structure-Insensitive Pigment Index (SIPI) was found indifferent to the age-position effect, allowing the treatments to be compared at any nodal position, while a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)-based stomatal conductance prediction was substantially affected by differential growth rates. As various biotic and abiotic factors may form distinctions in growth, future precision agriculture studies should consider its spectral effect on physiological predictions.

Dynamic changes of canopy-scale mesophyll conductance to CO₂ diffusion of sunflower as affected by CO₂ concentration and abscisic acid

Leaf-level measurements have shown that mesophyll conductance (g(m)) can vary rapidly in response to CO₂ and other environmental factors, but similar studies at the canopy-scale are missing. Here, we report the effect of short-term variation of CO₂ concentration on canopy-scale g(m) and other CO₂ exchange parameters of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) stands in the presence and absence of abscisic acid (ABA) in their nutrient solution. g(m) was estimated from gas exchange and on-line carbon isotope discrimination (Δ(obs)) in a ¹³CO₂/¹²CO₂) gas exchange mesocosm. The isotopic contribution of (photo)respiration to stand-scale Δ(obs) was determined with the experimental approach of Tcherkez et al. Without ABA, short-term exposures to different CO₂ concentrations (C(a) 100 to 900 µmol mol⁻¹) had little effect on canopy-scale g(m) . But, addition of ABA strongly altered the CO₂-response: g(m) was high (approx. 0.5 mol CO₂ m⁻² s⁻¹) at C(a) <200 µmol mol⁻¹ and decreased to <0.1 mol CO₂ m⁻² s⁻¹ at C(a) >400 µmol mol⁻¹. In the absence of ABA, the contribution of (photo)respiration to stand-scale Δ(obs) was high at low C(a) (7.2 ‰) and decreased to <2 ‰ at C(a) > 400 µmol mol⁻¹. Treatment with ABA halved this effect at all C(a) .

Do plant parts compete for resources? An evolutionary viewpoint

Simultaneously growing sinks are thought to compete for plant resources. Negative correlations, for example between grain number and stem mass in cereals, indeed resemble competition; but is the notion of intra-plant competition evolutionarily justified? Here we review intra-plant competition in light of two aspects of evolutionary biology: (a) major transitions that led to the reorganization of evolutionary individuals (e.g. isolated DNA molecules and independent cells) into new units of adaptation (e.g. chromosomes and multicellular organisms) with associated constraints to intra-individual conflict; and (b) genomic conflicts within individual plants with implications for resource allocation. Against this background, we look at apparent competition among genetically identical plant parts, and conclude that plants might use competition-like mechanisms to allocate resources, but only to the extent that these proximate mechanisms enhance overall plant fitness. In dealing with apparent competition among genetically different plant structures, we emphasize developing seeds attached to the same maternal plant, and the determination of yield components in annual crops. We propose that competition-like mechanisms among genetically different plant parts have been strongly shaped by the evolution of genomic conflict between parent and offspring, between female and male parents, and among siblings. By defining the number and potential size of grain simultaneously and before fertilization, a strong maternal control of resource allocation is exerted that favours uniform offspring size and partially counteracts genomic conflict.

A process-based model to simulate nitrogen distribution in wheat (Triticum aestivum) during grain-filling

Nitrogen (N) distribution among plant organs plays a major role in crop production and, in general, plant fitness to the environment. In the present study, a process-based model simulating N distribution within a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) culm during grain filling was developed using a functional-structural approach. A model of turnover of the photosynthetic apparatus was used to describe the fluxes between a common pool of mobile N and each leaf lamina. Grain N accumulation within a time-step was modelled as the minimum between the quantity calculated by a potential function and the N available in the common pool. Nitrogen dynamics in the other organs (i.e. stem, chaff, root N uptake and remobilisation) were accounted for by forced variables. Using a unique set of six parameters, the model was able to simulate the observed N kinetics of each lamina and of the grains under a wide range of crop N supplies and for three cultivars. The time-course of the vertical gradient of lamina N during grain filling was realistically simulated as an emerging property of the local processes defined at the lamina scale. The model described in the present study offers new insight into the interactions between N metabolism, plant architecture and productivity.
