Abstract
Concerns about chemical exposure in the electronics manufacturing industry have long been recognized, but data are lacking in Southeast Asia. We conducted a study in Batam, Indonesia, to evaluate chemical exposures in electronics facilities, using participatory research and biological monitoring approaches. A convenience sample of 36 workers (28 exposed, 8 controls) was recruited, and urine samples were collected before and after shifts. Five solvents (acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, benzene, and xylenes) were found in 46%-97% of samples, and seven metals (arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, tin, antimony, lead, and vanadium) were detected in 60%-100% of samples. Biological monitoring and participatory research appeared to be useful in assessing workers' exposure when workplace air monitoring is not feasible due to a lack of cooperation from the employer. Several logistical challenges need to be addressed in future biomonitoring studies of electronics workers in Asia in factories where employers are reluctant to track workers' exposure and health.

Abstract
Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is a heavy metal endocrine disruptor used widely in various industries worldwide and is considered a reproductive toxicant. Our previous studies demonstrated that lactational exposure to Cr(VI) caused follicular atresia, disrupted steroid hormone biosynthesis and signaling, and delayed puberty. However, the underlying mechanism was unknown. The current study investigated the effects of Cr(VI) exposure (25 ppm) during postnatal days 1-21 via dam's milk on epigenetic alterations in the ovary of F1 offspring. Data indicated that Cr(VI) disrupted follicle development and caused apoptosis by increasing DNMT3a /3b and histone methyl marks (H3K27me3 and H3K9me3) along with decreasing histone acetylation marks (H3K9ac and H3K27ac). Our study demonstrates that exposure to Cr(VI) causes changes in the epigenetic marks, partially contributing to the transcriptional repression of genes regulating ovarian development, cell proliferation (PCNA), cell survival (BCL-XL and BCL-2), and activation of genes regulating apoptosis (AIF and cleaved caspase-3), resulting in follicular atresia. The current study suggests a role for epigenetics in Cr(VI)-induced ovotoxicity and infertility.

Abstract
Numerous factors affect reproduction, including stress, diet, obesity, the use of stimulants, or exposure to toxins, along with heavy elements (lead, silver, cadmium, uranium, vanadium, mercury, arsenic). Metals, like other xenotoxins, can cause infertility through, e.g., impairment of endocrine function and gametogenesis or excess production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The advancement of nanotechnology has created another hazard to human safety through exposure to metals in the form of nanomaterials (NMs). Nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit a specific ability to penetrate cell membranes and biological barriers in the human body. These ultra-fine particles (<100 nm) can enter the human body through the respiratory tract, food, skin, injection, or implantation. Once absorbed, NPs are transported to various organs through the blood or lymph. Absorbed NPs, thanks to ultrahigh reactivity compared to bulk materials in microscale size, disrupt the homeostasis of the body as a result of interaction with biological molecules such as DNA, lipids, and proteins; interfering with the functioning of cells, organs, and physiological systems; and leading to severe pathological dysfunctions. Over the past decades, much research has been performed on the reproductive effects of essential trace elements. The research hypothesis that disturbances in the metabolism of trace elements are one of the many causes of infertility has been unquestionably confirmed. This review examines the complex reproductive risks for men regarding the exposure to potentially harmless xenobiotics based on a series of 298 articles over the past 30 years. The research was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases searching for papers devoted to in vivo and in vitro studies related to the influence of essential elements (iron, selenium, manganese, cobalt, zinc, copper, and molybdenum) and widely used metallic NPs on male reproduction potential.

Abstract
Untainted environment promotes health, but the last few decades experienced steep upsurge in environmental contaminants posing detrimental physiological impact. The responsible factors mainly include the exponential growth of human population, havoc rise in industrialization, poorly planned urbanization, and slapdash environment management. Environmental degradation can increase the likelihood of human exposure to heavy metals, resulting in health consequences such as reproductive problems. As a result, research into metal-induced causes of reproductive impairment at the genetic, epigenetic, and biochemical levels must be strengthened further. These metals impact upon the female reproduction at all strata of its regulation and functions, be it development, maturation, or endocrine functions, and are linked to an increase in the causes of infertility in women. Chronic exposures to the heavy metals may lead to breast cancer, endometriosis, endometrial cancer, menstrual disorders, and spontaneous abortions, as well as pre-term deliveries, stillbirths. For example, endometriosis, endometrial cancer, and spontaneous abortions are all caused by the metalloestrogen cadmium (Cd); lead (Pb) levels over a certain threshold can cause spontaneous abortion and have a teratogenic impact; toxic amounts of mercury (Hg) have an influence on the menstrual cycle, which can lead to infertility. Impact of environmental exposure to heavy metals on female fertility is therefore a well-known fact. Thus, the underlying mechanisms must be explained and periodically updated, given the growing evidence on the influence of increasing environmental heavy metal load on female fertility. The purpose of this review is to give a concise overview of how heavy metal affects female reproductive health.

Abstract
Environmental contamination with hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), has been increasing in the United States as well as in developing countries. Exposure to Cr(VI) predisposes the human population to various diseases, including cancer, infertility, and developmental problems in children. Previous findings from our laboratory reported that prenatal exposure to Cr(VI) caused premature ovarian failure through p53-mediated mechanisms. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is an NAD+ -dependent histone deacetylase class III. SIRT1 deacetylates several histones and non-histone proteins such as p53 and NFkB. The current study determines a role for the SIRT1-p53 network in apoptosis induced by Cr(VI) in the ovary and establishes physical interaction between SIRT1 and p53. Adult pregnant dams were given regular drinking water or Cr(VI) (10 ppm potassium dichromate in drinking water, ad libitum), and treated with SIRT1 inhibitor, EX-527 (50 mg/kg body weight, i.p.,), during 9.5 - 14.5 days post-coitum. On postnatal day-1, ovaries from F1 offspring were collected for various analyses. Results indicated that Cr(VI) increased germ cell and somatic cell apoptosis, upregulated acetyl-p53, activated the apoptotic pathway, and inhibited cell survival pathways. Cr(VI) decreased acetyl-p53-SIRT1 co-localization in the ovary. In an immortalized rat granulosa cell line SIGC, Cr(VI) inhibited the physical interaction between SIRT1 and acetyl-p53 by altering the p53:SIRT1 ratio. EX-527 exacerbated Cr(VI)-induced mechanisms. The current study shows a novel mechanism for Cr(VI)-induced apoptosis in the ovary, mediated through the p53-SIRT1 network, suggesting that targeting the p53 pathway may be an ideal approach to rescue ovaries from Cr(VI)-induced apoptosis.

Abstract
The major pesticides of the world are glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH), and their toxicity is highly debated. To understand their mode of action, the comparative herbicidal and toxicological effects of glyphosate (G) alone and 14 of its formulations were studied in this work, as a model for pesticides. GBH are mixtures of water, with commonly 36-48% G claimed as the active principle. As with other pesticides, 10-20% of GBH consist of chemical formulants. We previously identified these by mass spectrometry and found them to be mainly families of petroleum-based oxidized molecules, such as POEA, and other contaminants. We exposed plants and human cells to the components of formulations, both mixed and separately, and measured toxicity and human cellular endocrine disruption below the direct toxicity experimentally measured threshold. G was only slightly toxic on plants at the recommended dilutions in agriculture, in contrast with the general belief. In the short term, the strong herbicidal and toxic properties of its formulations were exerted by the POEA formulant family alone. The toxic effects and endocrine disrupting properties of the formulations were mostly due to the formulants and not to G. In this work, we also identified by mass spectrometry the heavy metals arsenic, chromium, cobalt, lead and nickel, which are known to be toxic and endocrine disruptors, as contaminants in 22 pesticides, including 11 G-based ones. This could also explain some of the adverse effects of the pesticides. In in vivo chronic regulatory experiments that are used to establish the acceptable daily intakes of pesticides, G or other declared active ingredients in pesticides are assessed alone, without the formulants. Considering these new data, this assessment method appears insufficient to ensure safety. These results, taken together, shed a new light on the toxicity of these major herbicides and of pesticides in general.

Abstract
Environmental contamination with hexavalent chromium (CrVI) is a growing problem both in the U.S and developing countries. CrVI is a heavy-metal endocrine disruptor; women working in Cr industries exhibit an increased incidence of premature abortion and infertility. The current study was designed to understand the mechanism of CrVI toxicity on placental cell survival/death pathways. Pregnant mothers were treated with or without CrVI (50ppmK2Cr2O7) through drinking water from gestational day (GD) 9.5-14.5, and placentas were analyzed on GD 18.5. Results indicated that CrVI increased apoptosis of trophoblasts, vascular endothelium of the metrial glands and yolk sac epithelium through caspase-3 and p53-dependent pathways. CrVI increased apoptosis in labyrinth and basal zones in a caspase-3-independent manner via AIF, and through an ATM-p53-NOXA-PUMA-p27 network. CrVI downregulated cell survival proteins Bcl-2, Bcl-XL and XIAP in the placenta. CrVI disrupts placental histoarchitecture and increases cell death by spatiotemporal modulation of apoptotic signaling.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RVT), a polyphenolic component in grapes and red wine, has been known for its cytoprotective actions against several diseases. However, beneficial effects of RVT against early exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have not been understood. EDCs are linked to several ovarian diseases such as premature ovarian failure, polycystic ovary syndrome, early menopause and infertility in women. Hexavalent chromium (CrVI) is a heavy metal EDC, and widely used in >50 industries. Environmental contamination with CrVI in the US is rapidly increasing, predisposing the human to several illnesses including cancers and still birth. Our lab has been involved in determining the molecular mechanism of CrVI-induced female infertility and intervention strategies to mitigate CrVI effects. Lactating mother rats were exposed to CrVI (50ppm potassium dichromate) from postpartum days 1-21 through drinking water with or without RVT (10mg/kg body wt., through oral gavage daily). During this time, F1 females received respective treatments through mother's milk. On postnatal day (PND) 25, blood and the ovary, kidney and liver were collected from the F1 females for analyses. CrVI increased atresia of follicles by increasing cytochrome C and cleaved caspase-3; decreasing antiapoptotic proteins; decreasing estradiol (E2) biosynthesis and enhancing metabolic clearance of E2, increasing oxidative stress and decreasing endogenous antioxidants. RVT mitigated the effects of CrVI by upregulating cell survival proteins and AOXs; and restored E2 levels by inhibiting hydroxylation, glucuronidation and sulphation of E2. This is the first study to report the protective effects of RVT against any toxicant in the ovary.

Abstract
Prenatal exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including bisphenol A, dioxin, pesticides, and cigarette smoke, has been linked to several ovarian diseases such as premature ovarian failure (POF) and early menopause in women. Hexavalent chromium (CrVI), one of the more toxic heavy metals, is widely used in more than 50 industries. As one of the world's leading producers of Cr compounds, the U.S. is facing growing challenges in protecting human health against adverse effects of CrVI. Our recent findings demonstrated that in vivo CrVI exposure during gestational period caused POF in F1 offspring. Our current research focus is three-fold: (i) to identify the effect of CrVI on critical windows of great vulnerability of fetal ovarian development; (ii) to understand the molecular mechanism of CrVI-induced POF; (iii) to identify potential intervention strategies to mitigate or inhibit CrVI effects. In order to accomplish these goals we used a fetal whole ovarian culture system. Fetuses were removed from the normal pregnant rats on gestational day 13.5. Fetal ovaries were cultured in vitro for 12 days, and treated with or without 0.1 ppm potassium dichromate (CrVI) from culture day 2-8, which recapitulated embryonic day 14.5-20.5, in vivo. Results showed that CrVI increased germ cell/oocyte apoptosis by increasing caspase 3, BAX, p53 and PUMA; decreasing BCL2, BMP15, GDF9 and cKIT; and altering cell cycle regulatory genes and proteins. This model system may serve as a potential tool for high throughput testing of various drugs and/or EDCs in particular to assess developmental toxicity of the ovary.

Abstract
Environmental exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is one cause of premature ovarian failure (POF). Hexavalent chromium (CrVI) is a heavy metal EDC widely used in more than 50 industries, including chrome plating, welding, wood processing, and tanneries. Recent data from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency indicate increased levels of Cr in drinking water from several American cities, which potentially predispose residents to various health problems. Recently, we demonstrated that gestational exposure to CrVI caused POF in F1 offspring. The current study was performed to identify the molecular mechanism behind CrVI-induced POF. Pregnant rats were treated with 25 ppm of potassium dichromate from Gestational Day (GD) 9.5 to GD 14.5 through drinking water, and the fetuses were exposed to CrVI through transplacental transfer. Ovaries were removed from the fetuses or pups on Embryonic Day (ED) 15.5, ED 17.5, Postnatal Day (PND) 1, PND 4, or PND 25, and various analyses were performed. Results showed that gestational exposure to CrVI: 1) increased germ cell/oocyte apoptosis and advanced germ cell nest (GCN) breakdown; 2) increased X-prolyl aminopeptidase (Xpnpep) 2, a POF marker in humans, during GCN breakdown; 3) decreased Xpnpep2 during postnatal follicle development; and 4) increased colocalization of Xpnpep2 with Col3 and Col4. We also found that Xpnpep2 inversely regulated the expression of Col1, Col3, and Col4 in all the developmental stages studied. Thus, CrVI advanced GCN breakdown and increased follicle atresia in F1 female progeny by targeting Xpnpep2.

Abstract
Research into occupational exposure of metals and consequences of reproductive systems has made imperative scientific offerings in the preceding few decades. Early research works focused on possible effects on the reproductive functions rather than the complete reproductive health of the woman. Later, it was realized that metals, as reproductive toxins, may also induce hormonal changes affecting other facets of reproductive health such as the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and fertility. Concern is now shifting from considerations for the pregnant woman to the entire spectrum of occupational health threats and thus reproductive health among women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite concerns over the harmful health effects of semiconductor production, epidemiological studies have shown mixed results. OBJECTIVES We aim to critically appraise epidemiologic studies to date, and to suggest future research and actions to protect workers in semiconductor industry. METHODS Epidemiologic studies were identified through electronic database searches, review of reference lists of relevant published works, and expert consultations, and were narratively reviewed. RESULTS Most evidence suggests reproductive risks from fabrication jobs, including spontaneous abortion (SAB), congenital malformation, and reduced fertility. Although chemicals have been suspected as causal agents, knowledge of the likely contribution(s) from specific exposures is still limited. Evidence of cancer risk seems to be equivocal. However, the available studies had serious limitations including healthy worker effects (HWEs), information bias, and insufficient power, all of which are associated with underestimation. Nevertheless, excess risks for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), leukemia, brain tumor, and breast cancer were observed. CONCLUSIONS Monitoring and innovative research based on international collaboration with a focus on sentinel events are required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We assessed whether paternal exposure prior to conception and maternal exposure during pregnancy to welding fumes (WF) and metal dusts or fumes (MD/F) independently and jointly increases the risk of preterm delivery, low birth weight, and small-for-gestational age. METHODS The study population was selected from The Finnish Prenatal Environment and Health Study of 2,568 newborns (response rate 94%) and included 1,670 women who worked during pregnancy of which 68 were exposed either to WF and/or MD/F. RESULTS The risk of SGA was related to maternal exposure to WF only (adjusted OR = 1.78; 95% CI 0.53-5.99), MD/F only (adjusted OR = 1.77; 95% CI 0.38-8.35) and both exposures (2.92; 1.26-6.78). The corresponding effect estimates for preterm delivery were 2.66 (0.32-22.08), 5.64 (1.14-27.81) and for birth weight below 3,000 g 3.79 (1.09-13.19), 1.85 (0.56-6.14) and 1.70 (0.70-4.15), respectively. There was some suggestive, inconsistent evidence that the risk of preterm delivery and SGA is related to paternal exposure to WF. CONCLUSIONS The present results provide evidence that maternal exposure to WF or MD/F combination during pregnancy may reduce fetal growth and suggestive evidence that paternal exposure to WF may increase the risk of preterm delivery and small-for-gestational age. The small number of exposed women and the lack of data for exposure concentrations suggest the need for further study to verify our findings.

Abstract
The literature indicates that exposure to electro-magnetic fields (EMF) may result in an increased incidence of cancer and spontaneous abortion. The aim of the present study was to determine whether living closer to high voltage power lines (HVPL) increased the risk of congenital anomalies. We studied residential exposure in any municipality in the Central-East Region of France where there was at least one residence within 500 metres of a HVPL. This was a matched case-control design. The cases consisted of all children with congenital anomalies, identified to the population-based registry in Central-East France between 1988-91. We chose two random controls, matched for birth year and municipality, for each case. For every case and control, we measured the distance from the HVPL to the maternal residence at the time of birth of the child as a surrogate for EMF exposure. Using 100 metres from an HVPL as the cut-point between exposure and non-exposure to electro-magnetic fields produced by HVPL, yielded an odds ratio of 0.95 (95% (confidence interval) CI: 0.45-2.03). Using 50 metres as the cut-point, yielded an OR of 1.25 (95% CI: 0.49-3.22). Among the 11 cases within 100 metres, there were 2 children with chromosomal anomalies, but otherwise there was no pattern in the occurrence of specific anomalies. These data indicate a lack of association between distance to HVPL and the total number of congenital anomalies. This study does not have enough statistical power to determine whether the prevalence of a specific congenital anomaly is significantly increased as a result of living near a HVPL.

Abstract
An investigation of a reported spontaneous abortion excess in an office environment was undertaken employing a multidisciplinary approach, including (1) an epidemiologic/validation step; (2) an industrial hygiene survey, including electromagnetic field measurements and indoor air quality determinations; and (3) a risk perception/risk communication component. This approach was needed because there are numerous chemical and physical agents and psychosocial stressors that may potentially impact the reproductive status of female office workers. Although video display terminals (VDTs) are typically the focus of spontaneous abortion (SAB) investigations, one cannot ignore other stressors in the environment. Magnetic field exposures within a payroll area were determined using a hand-held survey meter and data logging dosimeter. On average, the full shift time-weighted average exposures of workers to extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields in the payroll office area ranged from 1.0 to 5.6 mG. Influencing the investigation's protocol design were the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC's) recent Guidelines for Investigating Clusters of Health Events. Although these guidelines grew primarily out of cancer cluster investigations, we applied them in this instance and found them to be generalizable to reproductive hazards investigations. A spontaneous abortion excess was validated over a 2-year period among 26 women with 32 reproductive events, with rates 1.5-2.5 times the expected, depending on comparison figures used. Lessons learned in the investigation, including the applicability of the CDC's Cluster Investigation Protocol and the enormous importance of risk perception and risk communication, are described.

Abstract
Some laboratory studies have reported effects of extremely low frequency electric and magnetic fields on calcium homeostasis and pineal gland function which potentially could have consequences for reproductive health. The purpose of this review is to report results of research to date in humans on maternal, paternal and fetal exposure to the 50-60 Hz fields associated with electricity, and to propose populations, endpoints and strategies for future research.

Abstract
This study examined the association between exposure to occupational hazards and pregnancy outcomes using data from a case-control study conducted in 29 hospitals in Shanghai, China. The sample included 1,875 perinatal deaths and newborns with birth defects and the same number of controls. Information on mother's exposure to occupational radiation, chemicals, noise, and pesticides was investigated. Logistic regression analysis controlling for potential confounders showed that exposure to radiation before/during pregnancy was associated with antepartum fetal death, birth defects, small-for-gestational-age (SGA), and threatened abortion. Exposure to chemicals before/during pregnancy was associated with antepartum fetal death, early neonatal death, birth defects, preterm birth, and threatened abortion. Women exposed to pesticides during pregnancy had an increased risk of SGA and threatened abortion. Exposure to occupational noise during pregnancy increased the risk of antepartum fetal death. Furthermore, higher than expected numbers of congenital anomalies in the central nervous system (CNS) were identified among women exposed to chemicals before pregnancy and to pesticides during the first trimester of pregnancy. No significant association was found between occupational exposure and intrapartum fetal death. Although recall bias may be possible in our study, the findings encourage further research.

Abstract
While several studies have examined the role of employment during pregnancy on reproductive risk, few have taken into account the potential selection pressures which may cause a woman to choose employment or non-employment during pregnancy. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that employment, or certain types or preconditions of employment, places a woman at increased risk for spontaneous abortion. A case-control study design, utilizing two control groups matched to the 334 cases for age and parity (total N = 981) allowed detailed comparisons of exposures and correlates during the index pregnancy. Control groups consisted of pregnant women (less than 25 wk gestation) and postnatal women. Detailed histories of employment in the 3 months preceding and 4 months following the last menstrual period (LMP), were taken, as well as data on such potential confounding variables as past obstetrical history and socioeconomic status. No significant differences were found between groups in terms of overall employment status. In addition, particular characteristics of jobs, such as hours worked per week, physical activity level, shift work or flexibility of hours were found to be non-significant when analyzed several ways. However, a marked difference in risk (OR for prenatal comparison 1.79, P less than 0.01; OR for postnatal comparison 2.13, P less than 0.001) was found for job motivation amongst full-time workers for risk, with those women stating they worked primarily out of financial need being at highest risk for abortion. This remained after using multiple logistic regression to control for family income and other socioeconomic variables, job characteristics and subjective measures of job satisfaction.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The relation between spontaneous abortion (n = 5010), stillbirth without congenital defect (n = 210), and working conditions was analysed in 22,613 previous pregnancies of 56,067 women interviewed, 1982-4, immediately after termination of their most recent (current) pregnancy. The 22,613 previous pregnancies were those in which at time of conception the women were employed 30 or more hours a week. Ratios of observed (O) to expected (E) fetal deaths after allowance by logistic regression for seven non-occupational confounding variables were calculated at four stages of pregnancy in 60 occupational groups and six main sectors for women whose work entailed various physical demands, environmental conditions, and exposure to chemicals. The O/E ratios for abortion were raised in the sales sector (1.13, p less than 0.05) and services sector (1.11, p less than 0.01) and for stillbirth in the sales sector (1.50, p less than 0.1). Substantially increased O/E ratios for late but not early abortion were found in operating room nurses (2.92, p less than 0.05), radiology technicians (3.82, p less than 0.01), and employees in agriculture and horticulture (2.40, p less than 0.05); in all categories the O/E ratio for stillbirth were also raised but only significantly (5.55, p less than 0.01) in the latter group. The O/E ratio for stillbirth was also raised in leather manufacture (3.09, p less than 0.01). In both individual and grouped analysis (the latter undertaken to minimise the possible effect of recall bias) significantly increased O/E ratios for abortion were found in women exposed to various high levels of physical stress, particularly weight lifting, other physical effort, and standing (p less than 0.01). Increased ratios for stillbirth at this level of significance (p less than 0.01) were found for other physical effort and vibration. Noteworthy chemical exposure was identified only in the health, services, and manufacturing sectors; the O/E ratio for stillbirth approached two in women exposed to solvents, almost all in manufacturing (p less than 0.01). In the latter sector exposed to solvents was also associated with an approximately 20% increase in abortion ratio at similar probability level.

Abstract
An investigation was conducted among all female laboratory workers in the county of Funen to test the hypothesis that work in laboratories during pregnancy increases the risk of spontaneous abortion. Laboratory workers from hospital, university, and other public laboratories and from laboratories in industry were investigated. A socially comparable reference group less exposed to chemicals at work included office workers, technical assistants and designers, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists. Information was obtained through a postal questionnaire study in May 1980 and from hospital records. Neither the occupation in any single category of laboratory nor the alleged exposure to any single chemical during pregnancy showed a significant increase in the odds ratio for spontaneous abortion. A selection bias was found among the non-respondents with respect to both occupation and outcome of pregnancy, but the influence on the results was slight, owing to the small number of non-respondents. The higher rates of hospital admission for spontaneous abortion among the cases compared with the controls indicates that register data are not more valid than self reported data. This leads to several methodological problems that ought to be studied in further detail.

Abstract
An increase is expected in the world's industrial use of several metals, Al, Co, Mo, V, and W, among others. Very little is known about their possible effects on early mammalian development. Groups of mice were injected with compounds of these metals either before implantation or at early organogenesis. None of the metal compounds showed any interference with implantation, but all of them significantly affected fetal development: Al caused an increased frequency of fetal internal hemorrhage, Mo inhibited fetal normal weight gain, W increased the frequency of resorptions, and Al, Co, Mo, and V all interfered with fetal skeletal ossification.

Abstract
The object of this study was to assess the relative risks of cancer for a particular branch of industry by using the newly created cancer environment registry. The registry was created by a record linkage of the 1960 census to the Swedish Cancer Registry 1961-73. A cohort study was undertaken of all subjects classified in the census as working in the electronics or electrical manufacturing industry. The risks were calculated in relation to the general working population. The results showed a slightly higher total incidence of cancer (all sites) in this branch of industry than in the general working population, for men as well as for women. This was especially so for tumour sites connected with the pharynx and the respiratory system. The study also indicates that the new registry has a potential as a screening instrument.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Spontaneous abortions in hospitals were analysed from two sources—membership files of the Union of Rubber and Leather Workers (about 10 000 women) and records of the personnel of a rubber factory (about 1600 women). Two frequencies of spontaneous abortions were calculated for each population analysed: rate (No spontaneous abortions X 100/No pregnancies) and ratio (No spontaneous abortions X 100/No births). The two frequencies were increased for all union members compared with all Finnish women. The frequencies, however, did not appreciably differ when the pregnancies occurred during union membership as compared with the pregnancies before or after membership. The frequency of spontaneous abortions was higher for the short-time union members than for those employed for longer periods, but the increased frequency did not correlate with union membership. The employees of a rubber factory had slightly fewer spontaneous abortions on average than the community population. The women employed in the rubber factory for three to 23 months were found to have appreciably higher frequencies of spontaneous abortions than the women employed for longer periods. The present study showed the feasibility of using cases of spontaneous abortions in hospitals in an occupational study with longitudinal employment data. Women with short periods of employment appeared to have more spontaneous abortions than those with longer periods of employment suggesting the presence of selection mechanisms, perhaps with some analogies to the “healthy worker effect” in occupational mortality studies. The presence of such selection mechanisms deserve serious consideration in occupational reproductive epidemiology.

Abstract
Spontaneous abortions were analyzed in an industrialized Finnish community according to the occupation and workplace of both the women and their husbands. Information about spontaneous abortions and births was obtained from the hospital discharge register, and data about the women and their families were collected from census files. When compared with all women employed outside the home, women who worked at a textile plant (factory A, a clothing manufacturer) had an increased rate of spontaneous abortion (16.7 per cent vs 11.4 per cent). The rate of spontaneous abortions among women employed at factory A differed according to the husband's workplace. The odds ratio for women employed at factor A whose husbands worked at a large metallurgical factory was 3.8, whereas the odds ratio for women whose husbands worked elsewhere was 1.2. Between 1973 and 1976, the rate of spontaneous abortions in this town was consistently lower for the summer period. (May-August) than for the other periods of the year.

Abstract
Spontaneous abortions in hospital sterilising staff were analysed using data from a postal questionnaire and a hospital discharge register. The study included all the sterilising staff employed in Finnish hospitals in 1980; the controls were nursing auxiliaries. Data from the questionnaire showed that the frequency of spontaneous abortions was 11.3% for the sterilising staff and 10.6% for the nursing auxiliaries. When the staff were concerned in sterilising procedures during their pregnancy the frequency was 16.7% compared with 5.6% for the non-exposed pregnancies. Adjustment for age, parity, decade of pregnancy, smoking habits, and intake of coffee and alcohol did not affect the differences. The increased frequency of spontaneous abortion correlated with exposure to ethylene oxide but not with exposure to glutaraldehyde or to formaldehyde. Analysis of spontaneous abortions from the hospital discharge register confirmed the findings. Thus the results from the two independent analyses suggest that exposure to ethylene oxide in hospitals may carry a risk of spontaneous abortion among sterilising staff.

Abstract
Spontaneous abortions were analyzed in an industrial community in Finland in relation to the occupation of women and their husbands, and to the level of air pollution in the family's residential area. Information on abortions and births was obtained from the hospital discharge register; information on the women and their families was obtained from the files of the population and housing census. Women who were employed in rayon textile jobs and paper products jobs had an increased rate (P less than 0.10) of spontaneous abortions; the wives of men employed in transport and communication, in rayon textile jobs, and in chemical process jobs also had an increased rate of spontaneous abortions. In material stratified for age, parity, and socioeconomic class no evidence was found that the level of sulfur dioxide or carbon disulfide could be associated with a risk of spontaneous abortions. More spontaneous abortions were noted in all socioeconomic classes in areas where the mean annual level of hydrogen sulfide exceeded 4 micrograms m-3. However, the difference (total rates 7.6 and 9.3, respectively) was not significant statistically.
