Improving vanadium removal from contaminated river water in constructed wetlands: The role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

Industrial activities pose a significant ecological risk to water resources as they pollute surrounding waters with vanadium (V). Although the contribution of plants and substrates to V removal in constructed wetlands (CWs) has been reported, the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of AMF in V removal in CWs and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Reed plants (Phragmites australis) were inoculated with an AMF strain (Rhizophagus irregularis) in CW columns, creating AMF-inoculated (+AMF) and non-inoculated (-AMF) treatments. Three levels of influent V concentrations (low: 0.50 mg L-1, medium: 1.14 mg L-1 and high: 1.52 mg L-1) were examined. The + AMF treatment showed higher V removal (60%-98%) than the control (40%-82%) in all three conditions, although the difference was not significant in some cases. The mean mycorrhizal effects were 75%, 19%, and 28% for low, moderate, and high influent V concentrations, respectively. The +AMF treatment showed a higher GRSP-bonded V concentration (5.5 mg g-1) than the -AMF treatment (4.0 mg g-1). Furthermore, +AMF treatment showed larger plants with higher V concentrations in their tissues, accompanied by increased biological concentration factors and biological accumulation factors. Given the remarkable positive effect of AMF on V removal, our study suggests that treating AMF in CWs is a worthwhile approach.

Tri-mode Responses to Reactive Oxygen Species In Vivo by Chiral Vanadium-Based Nanoparticles

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are closely associated with the redox balance of the physiological environment, and monitoring ROS can aid in the early diagnosis of many diseases, including cancer. In this study, chiral vanadium trioxide/vanadium nitride (V2O3/VN) nanoparticles (NPs) modified with an organic dye (cyanine 3 [Cy3]) were prepared for ROS sensing. Chiral V2O3/VN NPs were prepared with the "ligand-induced chirality" strategy and showed a g-factor of up to 0.12 at a wavelength of 512 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this g-factor is the highest value of all chiral ceramic nanomaterials. The very high g-factor of the nanoprobe confers very high sensitivity, because the higher g-factor, the higher sensitivity. In the presence of ROS, V3+ in the chiral V2O3/VN nanoprobe undergoes a redox reaction to form V2O5, reducing the circular dichroism and absorbance signals, whereas the fluorescence signal of Cy3 is restored. With this nanoprobe, the limits of detection for the circular dichroic and fluorescence signals in living cells are 0.0045 nmol/106 and 0.018 nmol/106 cells, respectively. This chiral nanoprobe can also monitor ROS levels in vivo by fluorescence. This strategy provides an innovative approach to the detection of ROS and is expected to promote the wider application of chiral nanomaterials for biosensing.

Community assembly and microbial interactions in an alkaline vanadium tailing pond

Intensive development of vanadium-titanium mines leads to an increasing discharge of vanadium (V) into the environment, imposing potential risks to both environmental system and public health. Microorganisms play a key role in the biogeochemical cycling of V, influencing its transformation and distribution. In addition, the characterization of microbial community patterns serves to assess potential threats imposed by elevated V exposure. However, the impact of V on microbial community remains largely unknown in alkaline V tailing areas with a substantial amounts of V accumulation and nutrient-poor conditions. This study aims to explore the characteristics of microbial community in a wet tailing pond nearby a large-scale V mine. The results reveal V contamination in both water (0.60 mg/L) and sediment tailings (340 mg/kg) in the tailing pond. Microbial community diversity shows distinctive pattern between environmental metrices. Genera with the functional potential of metal reduction\resistance, nitrogen metabolism, and carbon fixation have been identified. In this alkaline V tailing pond, V and pH are major drivers to induce community variation, particularly for functional bacteria. Stochastic processes primarily govern the assemblies of microbial community in the water samples, while deterministic process regulate the community assemblies of sediment tailings. Moreover, the co-occurrence network pattern unveils strong selective pattern for sediment tailings communities, where genera form a complex network structure exhibiting strong competition for limited resource. These findings reveal the patterns of microbial adaptions in wet vanadium tailing ponds, providing insightful guidelines to mitigate the negative impact of V tailing and develop sustainable management for mine-waste reservoir.

Assessing petrochemical effluent effect on heavy metal pollution in Musa Estuary: A numerical modeling approach

The objective of this study is to assess the effect of petrochemical effluent on heavy metal pollutant in the Musa Estuary ecosystem in the North-western region of the Persian Gulf, through numerical modeling. The outfall of 30 petrochemical plants poses a potential threat to the estuary's seawater and sediment quality, environment, and public health. A combined hydrodynamic and ecologic modeling framework is applied to predict the spatial distribution of BOD and hazardous heavy metals in this estuary. MIKE 21 Flow Model (FM) CFD software is applied to simulate the tidal waves hydrodynamics, next to applying the MIKE ECO Lab models to predict the distribution of BOD and heavy metals in ambient water. The accuracy of the modeling framework is validated against measured water level, current speed, and water quality data. The results reveal that the level of lead concentration corresponds with the national standard, while the BOD, arsenic, molybdenum and vanadium exceed the limit in some areas, particularly in the tidal zone. The optimal outlet locations that effectively meet the standard concentrations of the heavy metals in the ambient water of the estuary are determined. The results confirm that the new outlet configuration corresponds with the standards: 0.198 μg/L for arsenic concentrations, 0.182 μg/L for molybdenum, 1.530 μg/L for vanadium, and 1.132 mg/L for BOD, at maximum. This study contributes to the perception of estuarine dynamics and provides practical implications for estuarine sustainable management and pollution control.

"Three-in-One" Multifunctional Hollow Nanocages with Colorimetric Photothermal Catalytic Activity for Enhancing Sensitivity in Biosensing

Immunochromatographic assays (ICAs) have been widely used in the field detection of mycotoxin contaminants. Nevertheless, the lack of multisignal readout capability and the ability of signaling tags to maintain their biological activity while efficiently loading antibodies remain a great challenge in satisfying diverse testing demands. Herein, we proposed a novel three-in-one multifunctional hollow vanadium nanomicrosphere (high brightness-catalytic-photothermal properties)-mediated triple-readout ICA (VHMS-ICA) for sensitive detection of T-2. As the key to this biosensing strategy, vanadium was used as the catalytic-photothermal characterization center, and natural polyphenols were utilized as the bridging ligands for coupling with the antibody while self-assembling with formaldehyde cross-linking into a hollow nanocage-like structure, which offers the possibility of realizing a three-signal readout strategy and improving the coupling efficiency to the antibody while preserving its biological activity. The constructed sensors showed a detection limit (LOD) of 2 pg/mL for T-2, which was about 345-fold higher than that of conventional gold nanoparticle-based ICA (0.596 ng/mL). As anticipated, the detection range of VHMS-ICA was extended about 8-fold compared with the colorimetric signal alone. Ultimately, the proposed immunosensor performed well in maize and oat samples, with satisfactory recoveries. Owing to the synergistic and complementary interactions between distinct signaling modes, the establishment of multimodal immunosensors with multifunctional tags is an efficient strategy to satisfy diversified detection demands.

How Do Differences in Electronic Structure Affect the Use of Vanadium Intermediates as Mimics in Nonheme Iron Hydroxylases?

We study active-site models of nonheme iron hydroxylases and their vanadium-based mimics using density functional theory to determine if vanadyl is a faithful structural mimic. We identify crucial structural and energetic differences between ferryl and vanadyl isomers owing to the differences in their ground electronic states, i.e., high spin (HS) for Fe and low spin (LS) for V. For the succinate cofactor bound to the ferryl intermediate, we predict facile interconversion between monodentate and bidentate coordination isomers for ferryl species but difficult rearrangement for vanadyl mimics. We study isomerization of the oxo intermediate between axial and equatorial positions and find the ferryl potential energy surface to be characterized by a large barrier of ca. 10 kcal/mol that is completely absent for the vanadyl mimic. This analysis reveals even starker contrasts between Fe and V in hydroxylases than those observed for this metal substitution in nonheme halogenases. Analysis of the relative bond strengths of coordinating carboxylate ligands for Fe and V reveals that all of the ligands show stronger binding to V than Fe owing to the LS ground state of V in contrast to the HS ground state of Fe, highlighting the limitations of vanadyl mimics of native nonheme iron hydroxylases.

Hyper-accumulation of vanadium in animals: Two sponges compete with urochordates

Vanadium (V) concentrations in organisms are usually very low. To date, among animals, only some urochordate and annelid species contain very high levels of V in their tissues. A new case of hyper-accumulation of V in a distinct animal phylum (Porifera), namely, the two homoscleromorph sponge species Oscarella lobularis and O. tuberculata is reported. The measured concentrations (up to 30 g/kg dry weight) exceed those reported previously and are not found in all sponge classes. In both Oscarella species, V is mainly accumulated in the surface tissues, and in mesohylar cells, as V(IV), before being partly reduced to V(III) in the deeper tissues. Candidate genes from Bacteria and sponges have been identified as possibly being involved in the metabolism of V. This finding provides clues for the development of bioremediation strategies in marine ecosystems and/or bioinspired processes to recycle this critical metal.

Utilization of phosphoric acid-modified biochar to reduce vanadium leaching potential and bioavailability in soil

Remediating vanadium (V) polluted soil has garnered widespread attention over the past decade. Yet, few research projects have investigated the stabilization of soil V using modified biochar, so the effects and interacting mechanisms between soil properties and modified biochar for V immobilization and stabilization remain unclear. Hence, this gap is addressed by determining the leaching behavior and mechanisms of soil V on different dosages of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) impregnated biochar (MLBC, 0.5%-4%). The applicability and durability in soil V immobilization was investigated under acid precipitation. The MLBC effect on V bioavailability and mobility was assessed first by CaCl2, Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP) extractions in different periods. The V concentrations significantly reduced in CaCl2, TCLP, and SPLP extract with MLBC at each dosage (30 d), while slight to significant increase in SPLP and TCLP extract V was recorded in a long-term incubation (90 d). Column leaching test further demonstrated the high durability of 4% MLBC in V stabilization under continuous acid exposure. Compared to the control (no-biochar), the accumulated V content in the leaching solution significantly decreased in MLBC-amended soil. Acid soluble fraction of V showed significant negative correlation with both soil organic matter (SOM) and available P, which was positively correlated with pH, suggested that pH, available P and SOM were key factors affecting the bioavailability of V in soil. Moreover, combining with the characterization results of MLBC and amended soil, the results revealed that H3PO4 modified biochar played a vital role on V immobilization and soil improvement by forming electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange, redox reaction or complexation with the increase of functional groups. These revealed an efficient and steady development of soil quality and treatment for soil V contamination, under MLBC operation to soil polluted with exogenous V.

The mechanism and reaction kinetics of visible light active bismuth oxide deposited on titanium vanadium oxide for aqueous diclofenac photocatalysis

Non-uniform, non-spherical bismuth oxide deposited on titanium vanadium oxide (3%-BVT1) was successfully synthesized via co-precipitation method and assessed for visible light degradation of aqueous diclofenac. The synthesized photocatalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Up to 80.7% diclofenac degradation was observed with a significant increment in reaction rate compared to commercially available Degussa P25 (kapp = 0.0013 → 0.0083 min-1) achieved within 3 h treatment time under optimized parameters of diclofenac concentration (10 mg L-1), catalyst loading (0.1 g L-1), and pH (5). The enhanced photocatalysis could be due to electron-hole separation and contribution of powerful oxidative species •OH > O2•-  > h+  >  > e-. The recyclability experiments indicate that 3%-BVT1 retained its efficiency up to 74.1% over five reaction cycles. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis indicated the formation of several transformation products during the degradation pathway. The studies of interfering ions depicted mild interference by sulfates, while interference by phosphates and nitrates was negligible during photocatalytic process, i.e., 70, 78.01, and 78.43% for the selected concentrations of 50, 25, and 40 mg L-1 as per their maximum concentrations detected in the natural wastewaters. Thus, 3%-BVT1 is a potential versatile candidate to treat various organic pollutants including pharmaceuticals.

Promoting effect of FeOx addition on the mechanochemically prepared vanadium-based catalyst for real PCDD/Fs removal and mechanism insight

Industrial-use VOx-based catalysts usually have a higher active temperature window (> 250-300°C), which becomes a "bottleneck" for the practical application of PCDD/Fs catalytic degradation technology. In this work, VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalyst prepared via mechanochemically method was investigated for the catalytic removal of PCDD/Fs. The removal efficiency of 1,2-DCBz, pure PCDD/Fs gas generated in the lab, PCDD/Fs from actual flue gas, long-term were studied, and the degradation mechanism was explored using FTIR and TOFMS. The degradation efficiency of 1,2-DCBz and PCDD/Fs on VOx-FeOx/TiO2 were higher than that of VOx/TiO2 catalyst, and the optimal FeOx addition ratio was 3 wt.%. The characterization results show that the addition of FeOx can effectively improve the pore structure, surface acidity, and VOx dispersion of the catalyst, thus contributing to increasing the V5+ content and surface-active oxygen, which is conducive to the improvement of adsorption and redox performance of the catalyst. Under the actual MSWI (municipal solid waste incineration) flue gas, the PCDD/Fs removal efficiency over VTi-3Fe-MC maintained long-term stability, higher than 85% for 240 min. This result was not significantly reduced compared with the data obtained in the laboratory. According to the analysis results of intermediate products by FTIR and GC-TOFMS, it can be inferred that the epoxidation fracture of benzene ring is the rate-limiting step of dioxin catalytic degradation reaction. This work gives an in-depth view into the PCDD/Fs removal over VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalysts and could provide guidelines for the rational design of reliable catalysts for industrial applications.

Enhanced photocatalytic activity of V3O7 / V2O5 - reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite towards methylene blue dye degradation

This work investigates the photocatalytic performance of V2O5 and V3O7 nanoparticles and their nanocomposites with rGO. The as-annealed V2O5 and V3O7 nanoparticles exhibited pure orthorhombic and monoclinic structures with an optical bandgap of 2.3 and 2.5 eV, respectively. The corresponding vibrational modes using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy analysis further confirm the form. The morphological studies reveal that V2O5 and V3O7 nanoparticles possess plate and petal-like morphology, respectively. Moreover, in the case of V2O5/V3O7-rGO nanocomposites, the plate/petal-like nanoparticles are embedded within rGO sheets. Incorporating nanoparticles within rGO sheets has quenched the green photoluminescence emission, enhancing their photocatalytic performance upon irradiation with white light of 100 mW/cm2. This is ascribed to the effective transport of interfacial electrons from vanadium oxide nanoparticles to the rGO surface, reducing the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. These results indicate that the vanadium oxide/rGO nanocomposites have potential applications in wastewater treatment.

A review on green approaches utilizing phytochemicals in the synthesis of vanadium nano particles and their applications

In the modern era, inorganic nanoparticles have received profound attention as they possess boundless applications in various fields. Among these, vanadium-based nanoparticles (VNPs) are highly remarkable due to their inherent physiological and biological properties with many therapeutic and other applications, such as drug delivery systems for diseases like cancer, environmental remediation, energy storage, energy conversion, and photocatalysis. Moreover, physically, and chemically synthesized VNPs are very versatile, however, these synthesis routes cause concern to health and the environment due to the highly savage reaction conditions, using highly toxic and harsh chemicals, which compel the researchers to develop an eco-friendly, greener, and sustainable route for synthesis. In this outlook, to avoid the innumerable limitations, a bio approach is used over chemical and physical methods. This present review emphasis on the role of various biological components in the synthesis, especially Phyto-molecules that acts as capping and reducing agent, and solvent system for the nanoparticles synthesis. Furthermore, the influence of various factors on the biogenic synthesized nanoparticles has also been discussed. Finally, potential applications of as-synthesized VNPs, principally as an antimicrobial agent and their role as a nanomedicine, energy applications as a supercapacitor, and photocatalytic agents, have been discussed.

Fabrication of a novel tantalum boride/vanadium carbide modified screen-printed carbon electrode for voltammetric determination of pimonidazole in bio-fluids

For the first time, a tumour hypoxia marker detection has been developed using two-dimensional layered composite modified electrodes in biological and environmental samples. The concept of TaB2 and V4C3-based MXene composite materials is not reported hitherto using ball-milling and thermal methods and it remains the potentiality of the present work. The successful formation is confirmed through various characterisation techniques like X-ray crystallography, scanning electron microscopy photoelectron, and impedance spectroscopy. A reliable and repeatable electrochemical sensor based on TaB2@V4C3/SPCE was developed for quick and extremely sensitive detection of pimonidazole by various electroanalytical methods. It has been shown that the modified electrode intensifies the reduction peak current and causes a decrease in the potential for reduction, in comparison with the bare electrode. The proposed sensor for pimonidazole reduction has strong electrocatalytic activity and high sensitivity, as demonstrated by the cyclic voltammetry approach. Under the optimal experimental circumstances, differential pulse voltammetry techniques were utilised for generating the wide linear range (0.02 to 928.51 µM) with a detection limit of 0.0072 µM. The resultant data demonstrates that TaB2@V4C3/SPCE nano-sensor exhibits excellent stability, reliability, and repeatability in the determination of pimonidazole. Additionally, the suggested sensor was successfully used to determine the presence of pimonidazole in several real samples, such as human blood serum, urine, water, and drugs.

Deciphering Vanadium Speciation in Smelting Ash and Adaptive Responses of Soil Microorganisms

Abundant smelting ash is discharged during pyrometallurgical vanadium (V) production. However, its associated V speciation and resultant ecological impact have remained elusive. In this study, V speciation in smelting ash and its influence on the metabolism of soil microorganisms were investigated. Smelting ashes from V smelters contained abundant V (19.6-115.9 mg/g). V(V) was the dominant species for soluble V, while solid V primarily existed in bioavailable forms. Previously unrevealed V nanoparticles (V-NPs) were prevalently detected, with a peak concentration of 1.3 × 1013 particles/g, a minimal size of 136.0 ± 0.6 nm, and primary constituents comprising FeVO4, VO2, and V2O5. Incubation experiments implied that smelting ash reshaped the soil microbial community. Metagenomic binning, gene transcription, and component quantification revealed that Microbacterium sp. and Tabrizicola sp. secreted extracellular polymeric substances through epsB and yhxB gene regulation for V-NPs aggregation to alleviate toxicity under aerobic operations. The V K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra suggested that VO2 NPs were oxidized to V2O5 NPs. In the anaerobic case, Comamonas sp. and Achromobacter sp. reduced V(V) to V(IV) for detoxification regulated by the napA gene. This study provides a deep understanding of the V speciation in smelting ash and microbial responses, inspiring promising bioremediation strategies to reduce its negative environmental impacts.

The energetics of N2 reduction by vanadium containing nitrogenase

The main class of nitrogenases has a molybdenum in its cofactor. A mechanism for Mo-nitrogenase has recently been described. In the present study, another class of nitrogenases has been studied, the one with a vanadium instead of a molybdenum in its cofactor. It is generally believed that these classes use the same general mechanism to activate nitrogen. The same methodology has been used here as the one used for Mo-nitrogenase. N2 activation is known to occur after four reductions in the catalytic cycle, in the E4 state. The main features of the mechanism for Mo-nitrogenase found in the previous study are an activation process in four steps prior to catalysis, the release of a sulfide during the activation steps and the formation of H2 from two hydrides in E4, just before N2 is activated. The same features have been found here for V-nitrogenase. A difference is that five steps are needed in the activation process, which explains why the ground state of V-nitrogenase is a triplet (even number) and the one for Mo-nitrogenase is a quartet (odd number). The reason an additional step is needed for V-nitrogenase is that V3+ can be reduced to V2+, in contrast to the case for Mo3+ in Mo-nitrogenase. The fact that V3+ is Jahn-Teller active has important consequences. N2H2 is formed in E4 with reasonably small barriers.

Architecture of Vanadium-Based MXene Dysregulating Tumor Redox Homeostasis for Amplified Nanozyme Catalytic/Photothermal Therapy

Taking the significance of the special microenvironment for tumor cell survival into account, disrupting tumor redox homeostasis is highly prospective for improving therapeutic efficacy. Herein, a multifunctional 2D vanadium-based MXene nanoplatform, V4 C3 /atovaquone@bovine albumin (V4 C3 /ATO@BSA, abbreviated as VAB) has been elaborately constructed for ATO-enhanced nanozyme catalytic/photothermal therapy. The redox homeostasis within the tumor cells is eventually disrupted, showing a remarkable anti-tumor effect. The VAB nanoplatform with mixed vanadium valence states can induce a cascade of catalyzed reactions in the tumor microenvironment, generating plenty of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with effective glutathione consumption to amplify oxidative stress. Meanwhile, the stable and strong photothermal effect of VAB under near-infrared irradiation not only causes the necrosis of tumor cells, but also improves its peroxidase-like activity. In addition, the release of ATO can effectively alleviate endogenous oxygen consumption to limit triphosadenine formation and inhibit mitochondrial respiration. As a result, the expression of heat shock proteins is effectively suppressed to overcome thermoresistance and the production of ROS can be further promoted due to mitochondrial injury. Moreover, VAB also presents high photoacoustic and photothermal imaging performances. In brief, the multifunctional nanoplatform can provide ATO-enhanced nanozyme catalytic/photothermal therapy with broadening the biomedical applications of vanadium-based MXene.

Green Synthesis of ZnO and V-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles Using Vinca rosea Plant Leaf for Biomedical Applications

The present work focused on the synthesis of Vinca rosea leaf extract derived ZnO and vanadium-doped ZnO nanoparticles (V-ZnO NPs). The chemical composition, structural, and morphology of ZnO and vanadium-doped ZnO NPs were examined by FTIR, XRD, and SEM-EDX. The FTIR confirmed the presence of functional groups corresponding to ZnO and vanadium-doped ZnO NPs. SEM-EDX clearly indicated the morphology of synthesised NPs; the hexagonal crystal of NPs was confirmed from XRD. In addition, the cytotoxic effect of ZnO and V-ZnO NPs was estimated against the breast cancer (MCF-7) cell line. From the assay, Vinca rosea (V. rosea) capped ZnO NPs have shown improved cytotoxic activity than that of Vinca rosea capped V-ZnO NPs. ZnO and vanadium-doped ZnO NPs showed the strongest antibacterial activity against Enterococcus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger. The α-amylase inhibition assays demonstrated antidiabetic activity of synthesised NPs. From the assay test, results obtained Vinca rosea capped ZnO nanoparticles prepared using the green approach showed high effective antioxidant, antidiabetic activity, and anticancer activity than vanadium-doped ZnO NPs.

Internal surface modification of additively manufactured macroporous TiAl6V4 biomimetic implants via a calciothermic reaction-based process and osteogenic in vivo responses

Three-dimensional macroporous titanium-aluminum-vanadium (TiAl6V4) implants produced by additive manufacturing (AM) can be grit blasted (GB) to yield microtextured exterior surfaces, with additional micro/nano-scale surface features provided by subsequent acid etching (AE). However, the line-of-sight nature of GB causes the topography of exterior GB + AE-modified surfaces to differ from internal GB-inaccessible surfaces. Previous in vitro studies using dense TiAl6V4 substrates indicated that a nonline-of-sight, calciothermic-reaction (CaR)-based process provided homogeneous osteogenic nanotextures on GB + AE surfaces, suggesting it could be used to achieve a homogeneous nanotopography on external and internal surfaces of macroporous AM constructs. Macroporous TiAl6V4 (3D) constructs were produced by direct laser melting and modified by GB + AE, with the CaR process then applied to 50% of constructs (3DCaR). The CaR process yielded nanoporous/nanorough internal surfaces throughout the macroporous constructs. Skeletally mature, male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with these constructs using a cranial on-lay model. Prior to implantation, a Cu++-free click hydrogel was applied to half of the constructs (3D + H, 3DCaR + H) to act as a challenge to osseointegration. Osseointegration was compared between the four implant groups (3D, 3DCaR, 3D + H, 3DCaR + H) at 4w. 3D + H implants exhibited lower bone volume (BV) and percent bone ingrowth (%BI) than the 3D implants. In contrast, osseointegrated 3DCaR + H implants had similar BV and %BI as the 3DCaR implants. Implant pull-off forces correlated with these results. In vitro analyses indicated that human bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) exhibited enhanced production of osteoblast differentiation markers and factors associated with osteogenesis when grown on CaR-modified 3D substrates relative to control (TCPS) substrates. This work confirms that the CaR process provides osteogenic nanotextures on internal surfaces of macroporous 3D implants, and suggests that CaR-modified surfaces can promote osseointegration in cases where osteogenesis is impaired.

Selective, rapid extraction of uranium from aqueous solution by porous chitosan-phosphorylated chitosan-amidoxime macroporous resin composite and differential charge calculation

Herein, a new porous chitosan-phosphorylated chitosan-amidoxime macroporous resin composite (PCAR) was designed and synthesized for the rapid and selective extraction of uranium resources from aqueous solution. This study showed that PCAR exhibited excellent adsorption toward uranium in a pH range of 5-9. The dynamic adsorption process aligned with the quasi-second-order kinetic model and corresponded to the chemical adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was 561.28 mg·g-1 at pH 6 and 308 K. Mechanism analysis showed that the synergistic effect of the amidoxime group (-(NH2)C=N-OH), PO, and -NH2 on the PCAR surface improved the uranium adsorption performance. The differential charge density indicated that the amidoxime and phosphate groups provide lone-pair electrons for the adsorption of UO22+ and their synergistic effect improves the UO22+ adsorption performance of PCAR. The uranium distribution coefficients of PCAR and CAR are 4.6 and 2.4 times those of vanadium, respectively. These results indicate that phosphorylation can ameliorate the disadvantage of competitive vanadium adsorption of the amidoxime adsorbent. In addition, PCAR exhibits good reusability and stable adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Hence, PCAR has excellent potential for uranium extraction from aqueous solution.

Spectrophotometric determination of trace vanadium in fresh fruit juice samples by ion pair-based surfactant-assisted microextraction procedure with solidification of floating organic drop

An ion pair-based surfactant-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction with solidification of floating organic drop (IP-SA-DLLME-SFOD) was developed for extraction of vanadium followed by spectrophotometric determination. Tannic acid (TA) and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were utilized as complexing and ion-pairing agents, respectively. Using ion-pairing, TA-vanadium complex became more hydrophobic and quantitatively extracted into 1-undecanol. Some factors that influence extraction efficiency were studied. Under optimized circumstances, the detection and quantification limits were 1.8 μg L-1 and 5.9 μg L-1, respectively. The method was linear up to 1000 μg L-1 and the enrichment factors was 19.8. For 100 μg L-1 vanadium, the intra-day, and inter-days relative standard deviations (n = 8) were 1.4% and 1.8%, respectively. The suggested IP-SA-DLLME-SFOD procedure has been effectively implemented for spectrophotometric quantification of vanadium in fresh fruit juice samples. Finally, the greenness of the approach was estimated using Analytical Greenness Calculator (AGREE), which proved its environmental friendliness and safety.

Vanadium in modern sediments of urban lakes in the North of Russia: natural and anthropogenic sources

Studies have found that vanadium tends to accumulate in the sediments of lakes located in urban areas where fuel oil thermal power plants or boiler houses are present. The highest concentration of vanadium, amounting to 4785 mg/kg, was found in a lake situated less than a kilometer away from a thermal power plant. In contrast, pristine lakes typically have vanadium levels that are consistent with or below the background levels. In certain regions of Karelia, the elevated concentration of vanadium in lake sediments can be attributed to the presence of uranium‑vanadium ores. In urban sediments, vanadium is closely associated with nickel, which can also be released into the environment through the emissions of thermal power plants and boiler houses. It has been observed that vanadium in lakes primarily exists in the solid insoluble fraction, possibly bonded with natural minerals.

Inhibition of calcium imbalance protects hepatocytes from vanadium exposure-induced inflammation by mediating mitochondrial-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes in ducks

Vanadium (V) is an essential mineral element in animals, but excessive V can lead to many diseases, affecting the health of humans and animals. However, the molecular crosstalk between mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes (MAMs) and inflammation under V exposure is still at the exploratory stage. This study was conducted to determine the molecular crosstalk between MAMs and inflammation under V exposure in ducks. In this study, duck hepatocytes were treated with NaVO3 (0 μM, 100 μM, and 200 μM) and 2-aminoethyl diphenyl borate (2-APB) (IP3R inhibitor) alone or in combination for 24 h. The data showed that V exposure-induced cell vacuolization, enlarged intercellular space, and decreased density and viability. Meanwhile, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malonaldehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were upregulated under V treatment. In addition, excessive V could lead to a marked reduction in the MAMs structure, destruction of the membrane structure and overload of intracellular Ca2+ and mitochondrial Ca2+. Moreover, V treatment resulted in notable upregulation of the levels of MAMs-relevant factors (IP3R, Mfn2, Grp75, MCU, VDAC1) but downregulated the levels of IL-18, IL-1β, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the cell supernatant. Additionally, it also significantly elevated the levels of inflammation-relevant factors (NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, MAVS, IL-18, IL-1β, and TXNIP). However, the inhibition of IP3R expression attenuated the V-induced variations in the above indicators. Collectively, our results revealed that the maintenance of calcium homeostasis could protect duck hepatocytes from V-induced inflammation injury via MAMs.

Vanadium Carbide Nanosheets with Broad-Spectrum Antioxidant Activity for Pulmonary Fibrosis Therapy

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic and highly lethal lung disease that largely results from oxidative stress; however, effective antioxidant therapy by targeting oxidative stress pathogenesis is still lacking. The big challenge is to develop an ideal antioxidant material with superior antifibrotic effects. Herein, we report that V4C3 nanosheets (NSs) can serve as a potential antioxidant for treatment of pulmonary fibrosis by scavenging reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Interestingly, subtle autoxidation can adjust the valence composition of V4C3 NSs and significantly improve their antioxidant behavior. Valence engineering triggers multiple antioxidant mechanisms including electron transfer, H atom transfer, and enzyme-like catalysis, thus endowing V4C3 NSs with broad-spectrum, high-efficiency, and persistent antioxidant capacity. Benefiting from antioxidant properties and good biocompatibility, V4C3 NSs can significantly prevent myofibroblast proliferation and extracellular matrix abnormality, thus alleviating the progression of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in vivo by scavenging ROS, anti-inflammation, and rebuilding antioxidant defenses. This study not only provides an important strategy for designing excellent antioxidant nanomaterials, but also proposes a proof-of-concept demonstration for the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis and other oxidative stress-related diseases.

Vanadium, cobalt, zinc, and rubidium are associated with markers of inflammation and oxidative stress in a Greek population with obesity

Introduction

The prevalence of obesity is rising globally, with negative effects on the socioeconomic system. As a result of its drivers which include low-grade chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and fatty acid metabolism, this phenotype develops metabolic anomalies that exacerbate its pathogenesis. It has been discovered that metals and metalloids have substantial effects on both the immune system and metabolism and are influenced by factors connected to obesity. Although there is a known connection between metals, obesity, and related metabolic disorders, it is still under research.

Methods

We determined the plasma levels of 16 metals and metalloids in 76 individuals with obesity and investigated the relationships with inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in order to clarify the processes by which metals/metalloids exhibit their effects.

Results

After adjusting for age, gender, BMI, physical activity level, smoking, the existence of metabolic abnormalities, and dietary intake of the corresponding metal, regression analysis revealed the following statistically significant associations; vanadium was negatively associated with oxLDL (Beta ± SE= -0.014 ± 0.005, p=0.007), zinc was negatively associated with leptin (Beta ± SE= -12.390 ± 5.226, p=0.025), cobalt was associated negatively with adiponectin (Beta ± SE= -0.030 ± 0.012, p=0.001) and positively with MPO (Beta ± SE= 0.002 ± 0.001, p=0.023), and rubidium was negatively associated with oxLDL (Beta ± SE= -1.139 ± 0.411, p=0.008) and positively with MPO (Beta ± SE= 0.324 ± 0.102, p=0.003).

Discussion

The aforementioned associations highlight the need for further research, demonstrating the importance of inflammation and oxidative stress in the association between metals/metalloids and obesity-related metabolic abnormalities.

Vanadium nitride decorated carbon cloth anode promotes aniline degradation and electricity generation of MFCs by efficiently enriching electroactive bacteria and promoting extracellular electron transfer

To increase the colonization of electroactive bacteria and accelerate the rate of extracellular electron transfer, a simple coated anode of microbial fuel cell was designed. Here, we took advantage of vanadium nitride (VN) particles to modify the carbon cloth (VN@CC). Compared with bare carbon cloth, the designed VN@CC bioanodes exhibited a larger electrochemically active area, better biocompatibility, and smaller charge transfer impedance. The MFC with VN@CC bioanodes achieved the maximum power density of 3.89 W m-2 and chemical oxygen demand removal rate of 84% when 1000 mg L-1 aniline was degraded, which were about 1.88 and 2.8 times that of CC. The morphology of biofilm and 16s rRNA gene sequence analysis proved that the VN@CC bioanodes facilitated the enrichment of electroactive bacteria (99.02%) and increased the ratio of fast electron transfer in the extracellular electron transfer, thus enhancing the MFC performance of aniline degradation and power output. This work disclosed that it was feasible to increase the overall performance of MFC by enhancing the EET efficiency and presented valuable insights for future work.

Sorption of cadmium, chromium, lead, and vanadium from artificial wetlands using Lemna aequinoctialis

The efficacy of the lesser duckweed, Lemna aequinoctialis (Welw.), to remediate varying concentrations of cadmium, chromium, lead, and vanadium from an organo-metallic contaminated media was tested in artificial surface wetland mesocosm experiment. A 100 g of fresh-weight duckweed was introduced into each of the mesocosm, except for the control setup and monitored for 120 days while the metals removal rate was quantified using an atomic absorption spectrometer. A time-dependent and partial sorption of metals was observed with the highest removal rate recorded for cadmium (71.96%), followed by lead (69.23%), vanadium (55.22%), and chromium (41.64%). The uptake and bioaccumulation of metals were reflected in the increased plant biomass (p < 0.05, F = 97.12) and relative growth rate (p < 0.05, F = 1214.35) in duckweed. A coefficient (r2) of 0.951, 0.919, 0.970, and 0.967 was recorded for cadmium, chromium, lead, and vanadium respectively, indicating that the remediation of metals followed the first-order kinetic rate model. This study highlights the efficacy of the lesser duckweed to preferentially remediate metals in an organo-metallic complex medium for potential wastewater treatment in the petrochemical industry.

Synthesis of 2D VO2 Nanosheets for the Dual Optical Sensor Method by Colorimetric and Fluorometric Sensing of Catecholamines

For the first time, we report a dual optical sensor method (DOSM) using novel 2D VO2 nanosheets to act as fluorometric and colorimetric sensors to perform quantitative analysis of epinephrine (EP) and dopamine (DA). The wide color spectrum of the 2D vanadium oxidation series and specifically metastable blue 2D VO2 nanosheets were used to develop a DOSM biosensor. DA and EP are the major catecholamines in the human body that play vital roles as neurotransmitters and stress-responsive hormones of the endocrine system, respectively. Accurate and selective detection of these biomolecules can assist in the diagnosis of many neuroendocrine system-related diseases. The newly synthesized 2D VO2 nanosheet sensor showed bluish-green fluorescence as the first-ever fluorescence from 2D VO2 nanosheets. This sensor showed dual-function sensing toward EP by a dominant color change and fluorescence quenching. It is capable of individually detecting and quantifying both EP and DA with high selectivity and sensitivity by using both colorimetry and fluorometry simultaneously, with the detection limits of 1.07 and 5.54 μM for colorimetric analysis, respectively, and 48.07 and 3.98 μM for fluorescence analysis, respectively. The DOSM sensor was directly applied to real urine samples and gained satisfactory recovery above 90% by means of spiked concentrations. This study has opened a new platform using the DOSM and the vanadium oxidation spectrum in a much more effective way for biosensing. The fluorescence capabilities of this metal oxide can be further applied to many sensor applications based on both fluorescence and colorimetric detection.

Trimester-specific effects of maternal exposure to single and mixed metals on cord serum inflammatory cytokines levels: A prospective birth cohort study

BACKGROUND

Cord blood inflammatory cytokines are vital in early-life programming. An increasing number of studies concern the effect of maternal exposure to different metal elements during pregnancy on inflammatory cytokines, but limited studies have explored the association between maternal exposure to mixed metals and cord blood inflammatory cytokine levels.

METHODS

We measured serum concentrations of vanadium (V), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and barium (Ba) in the first, second, and third trimesters and eight cord serum inflammatory cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-17A, and TNF-α) in 1436 mother-child dyads from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort. Generalized linear models and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were performed to assess the association of single and mixed metal exposure during each trimester with cord serum inflammatory cytokine levels, respectively.

RESULTS

Regarding metal exposure in the first trimester, V was positively associated with TNF-α (β = 0.33, 95 % CI: 0.13, 0.53); Cu was positively associated with IL-8 (β = 0.23, 95 % CI: 0.07, 0.39); Ba was positively associated with IFN-γ and IL-6; As was negatively associated with IFN-γ and IL-17A; and Cd was negatively associated with IFN-γ, IL-1β, IL-12p70, IL-17A, and TNF-α. BKMR revealed that exposure to metal mixtures in the first trimester was positively associated with IL-8 and TNF-α but negatively associated with IL-17A. Moreover, V contributed the most to these associations. Interaction effects were observed between Cd and As and between Cd and Cu with IL-8, and between Cd and V with IL-17A. Among males, As decreased inflammatory cytokines; among females, Cu increased inflammatory cytokine levels, whereas Cd decreased inflammatory cytokine concentrations.

CONCLUSIONS

Maternal exposure to metal mixtures in the first trimester interfered with cord serum inflammatory cytokine levels. The associations of maternal exposure to As, Cu and Cd with inflammatory cytokines showed sex differences. Further studies are warranted to support the findings and explore the mechanism of the susceptibility window and sex-specific disparity.

Co-exposure to iron, copper, zinc, selenium and titanium is associated with the prevention of gastric precancerous lesions

Gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death, and gastric precancerous lesions (GPLs) are an important stage in the transformation of normal gastric mucosa to gastric cancer. Matched for age and sex, a total of 316 subjects were eventually included from our prospective observation population (including 1007 patients with GPLs and 762 normal controls), and a questionnaire survey was conducted. In total, 10 plasma elements (iron, copper, zinc, selenium, rubidium, strontium, titanium, aluminum, vanadium and arsenic) were measured by applying inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry (ICP‒MS). A multivariate conditional logistic regression model and Bayesian kernel logistic regression model (BKMR) were used to analyze the association between plasma element concentrations and GPLs. In the multimetal model, plasma titanium concentrations were significantly and positively associated with the prevalence of GPLs, with a fourth-quartile OR of 11.56 ([95% CI]: [2.78-48.13]). Plasma selenium and copper were negatively correlated with GPLs, with the highest quartiles of selenium and copper having an OR of 0.03 ([95% CI]: [0.01-0.15]; P < 0.001) and 0.24 ([95% CI]: [0.07-0.82]), respectively. In the BKMR model, there was a significant negative combined correlation of five metals on GPLs: iron, copper, zinc, selenium, and titanium. The results of this study showed that plasma concentrations of selenium and copper were negatively correlated with GPLs, while plasma concentrations of titanium were positively correlated with GPLs, and the combined action of the five elements was negatively correlated with GPLs.

Study on the correlation and interaction between metals and dyslipidemia: a case-control study in Chinese community-dwelling elderly

Previous studies on the association between metals and dyslipidemia are not completely consistent. There are few studies investigating the relationship between mixed metal exposure and dyslipidemia as well as the effects of metals on dyslipidemia in community-dwelling elderly. To evaluate the correlations and interaction effect between the urinary concentrations of metals and the risk of dyslipidemia in community-dwelling elderly. We designed a case-control study to assess the correlation between urine metals and dyslipidemia in elderly people in the Yinchuan. The urinary levels of 13 metals, including calcium, vanadium, iron, cobalt, zinc, copper, arsenic, selenium, molybdenum, cadmium, tellurium, and thallium, were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the blood biochemical analyzer was used to measure the blood lipid levels of 3384 senior individuals from four different areas of Yinchuan city. Logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to explore the correlation and dose-response relationship between urinary metals and the risk of dyslipidemia. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used to select metals, and then weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was used to explore the weight of each metal in mixed metals. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to explore the interactions between metals on dyslipidemia risk. (1) After selection by LASSO regression, in the multi-metal model, compared with the lowest quartile, the adjusted ORs (95%CI) of the highest quartiles were 0.47 (0.37-0.60) for Fe, 1.43 (1.13-1.83) for Zn, 1.46 (1.11-1.92) for As, 0.59 (0.44-0.80) for Se, 1.53 (1.18-2.00) for Mo, and 1.36 (1.07-1.73) for Te. (2) In the WQS regression model, Fe and Mo accounted for the largest weight in the negative and positive effects of dyslipidemia, respectively. (3) In the BKMR model, there may be a positive interaction between Te and Se on dyslipidemia. Among the mixed metals, Fe, As, Se, Mo, and Te were associated with the prevalence of dyslipidemia, with Fe and Mo contributing the most. There may be certain interactions between Te and Se.

Vanadium-Doped Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Promotes Osteogenic Differentiation of rBMSCs via the WNT/β-Catenin Signaling Pathway

Pentavalent vanadium [V(V)] has been studied as bioactive ions to improve the bone defect repair; however, its osteogenic promotion mechanism is still not fully understood so far. In this study, a V-doped mesoporous bioactive glass (V-MBG) was prepared, and its effects on osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) and potential signaling pathways were investigated. The physicochemical characterization revealed that the incorporation of V slightly reduced the specific surface area and increased the mesoporous pore size, and the abundant mesopores of V-MBG were beneficial to the sustained dissolution of V(V) ions as well as calcium, silicon, and phosphorus ions. Cell proliferation results indicated that the high dilution ratio (>16) V-MBG extract markedly promoted the proliferation of rBMSCs compared with the control group and the same dilution ratio MBG extract. Compared with the same dilution ratio MBG extract, diluted V-MBG extracts markedly promoted the secretion of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin (OCN) protein at day 7 but insignificantly stimulated the runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein synthesis. In depth, the diluted V-MBG extracts remarkably up-regulated the expression of WNT/β-catenin pathway direct target genes, including WNT3a, β-catenin, and AXIN2 genes in contrast to the same dilution ratio MBG extracts, suggesting that the released V(V) ions might promote osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs via the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Bioactive Vanadium Disulfide Nanostructure with "Dual" Antitumor Effects of Vanadate and Gas for Immune-Checkpoint Blockade-Enhanced Cancer Immunotherapy

Bioactive inorganic nanomaterials and the biological effects of metal ions have attracted extensive attention in tumor therapy in recent years. Vanadium (V), as a typical bioactive metal element, regulates a variety of biological functions. However, its role in antitumor therapy remains to be revealed. Herein, biodegradable vanadium disulfide (VS2) nanosheets (NSs) were prepared as a responsive gas donor and bioactive V source for activating cancer immunotherapy in combination with immune-checkpoint blockade therapy. After PEGylation, VS2-PEG exhibited efficient glutathione (GSH) depletion and GSH-activated hydrogen sulfide (H2S) release. Exogenous H2S caused lysosome escape and reduced adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis in tumor cells by interfering with the mitochondrial membrane potential and inducing acidosis. In addition, VS2-PEG degraded into high-valent vanadate, leading to Na+/K+ ATPase inhibition, potassium efflux, and interleukin (IL)-1β production. Together with further induction of ferroptosis and immunogenic cell death, a strong antitumor immune response was stimulated by reversing the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Moreover, the combined treatment of VS2-PEG and α-PD-1 amplified antitumor therapy, significantly suppressed tumor growth, and further elicited robust immunity to effectively defeat tumors. This work highlights the biological effects of vanadium for application in cancer treatment.

Cyanobacterial blooms increase the release of vanadium through iron reduction and dissolved organic matter complexation in the sediment of eutrophic lakes

Vanadium (V), a hazardous environmental contaminant, can be highly toxic to aquatic or even human life. Nonetheless, knowledge of its redox geochemistry and mobility in sediments, especially those of eutrophic lakes, remains limited. In this study, we combined in situ high-resolution sampling and laboratory simulation experiments for monitoring soluble and labile V to reveal the mobilization mechanism of V in the sediment of Lake Taihu. The results showed that the concentration of soluble V (1.18-5.22 µg L-1) exceeded the long-term ecotoxicology limitation proposed by the government of the Netherlands. The highest value appeared in summer (July to September), with an average concentration of 3.87 µg L-1, which exceeded the short-term exposure limit. The remobilization of V in summer was caused by the combined effect of the reduction of Fe(hydr)oxides and dissolved organic matter (DOM) complexation, which accelerated the release of associated Fe-bound V and increased the solubility of DOM-V. Additionally, V showed high mobility in winter, owing to the species of V(Ⅲ)/V(Ⅳ) being oxidized to V(Ⅴ) with higher solubility. It is noteworthy that the elevated remobilization of V in sediments increases the risk of V release from sediments, which poses the threat of water V pollution in Lake Taihu.

2D Piezoelectric BiVO4 Artificial Nanozyme with Adjustable Vanadium Vacancy for Ultrasound Enhanced Piezoelectric/Sonodynamic Therapy

Increasing the yield of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to enhance oxidative stress in cells is an eternal goal in cancer therapy. In this study, BiVO4 artificial nanozyme is developed with adjustable vanadium vacancy for ultrasound (US) enhanced piezoelectric/sonodynamic therapy. Under US excitation, the vanadium vacancy-rich BiVO4 nanosheets (abbreviated Vv -r BiVO4 NSs) facilitate the generation of a large number of electrons to improve the ROS yield. Meanwhile, the mechanical strain imposed by US irradiation makes the Vv -r BiVO4 NSs display a typical piezoelectric response, which tilts the conduction band to be more negative and the valance band more positive than the redox potentials of O2 /O2 •- and H2 O/·OH, boosting the efficiency of ROS generation. Both density functional theory calculations and experiments confirm that the introduction of cationic vacancy can improve the sonodynamic effect. As expected, Vv -r BiVO4 NSs have better peroxidase enzyme catalytic and glutathione depletion activities, resulting in increased intracellular oxidative stress. This triple amplification strategy of oxidative stress induced by US substantially inhibits the growth of cancer cells. The work may open an avenue to achieve a synergetic therapy by introducing cationic vacancy, broadening the biomedical use of piezoelectric materials.

Cobalt chromium alloys in fixed prosthodontics: Investigations of mechanical properties and microstructure

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Cobalt chromium (Co-Cr) alloys possess beneficial mechanical properties because alloys, even in thin sections, can resist high mastication forces and exhibit an acceptable bond to the surface porcelain layer. Traditional manufacturing techniques of Co-Cr alloys such as casting have been replaced with newer fabrication techniques, such as milling, laser melting, and presintered milling. Despite scarce documentation, these new manufacturing techniques are being used to fabricate dental and implant constructions.

PURPOSE

This in vitro study investigates the hardness, yield strength, elastic modulus, and microstructure of the most commonly used Co-Cr alloys for fixed prosthodontics based on manufacturing technique. In addition, this study investigates the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical properties and microstructure of these materials.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Five Co-Cr alloys were included (dumbbell and rectangular shaped) based on four manufacturing techniques: cast, milled, laser melted, and presintered milled. Commercially pure titanium grade 4 and titanium-6 aluminum-4 vanadium ELI (extra low interstitial) were included for comparison, and yield strength and elongation after fracture were evaluated. The specimens were tested for hardness using the Vickers test and for elastic modulus using a nondestructive impulse excitation technique. The microstructure of selected specimens was analyzed using focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).

RESULTS

The mechanical properties depend on the manufacturing technique used; the laser-melted and presintered Co-Cr specimens demonstrated the highest mechanical properties, followed by the milled and cast groups. Both the laser-melted and the presintered milled Co-Cr specimens showed smaller grain size compared with the cast and milled Co-Cr specimens. The titanium-6 aluminum-4 vanadium ELI demonstrated higher hardness and yield strength compared to commercially pure titanium grade 4. No major differences were observed for the selected materials regarding the mechanical properties and microstructural appearance after heat treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

The laser melting and presintered milling techniques produced higher mechanical properties compared with the cast and milled Co-Cr. These findings were confirmed through microstructural analysis with respect to the grain size, precipitation, and number of pores.

V4 C3 MXene Immune Profiling and Modulation of T Cell-Dendritic Cell Function and Interaction

Although vanadium-based metallodrugs are recently explored for their effective anti-inflammatory activity, they frequently cause undesired side effects. Among 2D nanomaterials, transition metal carbides (MXenes) have received substantial attention for their promise as biomedical platforms. It is hypothesized that vanadium immune properties can be extended to MXene compounds. Therefore, vanadium carbide MXene (V4 C3 ) is synthetized, evaluating its biocompatibility and intrinsic immunomodulatory effects. By combining multiple experimental approaches in vitro and ex vivo on human primary immune cells, MXene effects on hemolysis, apoptosis, necrosis, activation, and cytokine production are investigated. Furthermore, V4 C3 ability is demonstrated to inhibit T cell-dendritic cell interactions, evaluating the modulation of CD40-CD40 ligand interaction, two key costimulatory molecules for immune activation. The material biocompatibility at the single-cell level on 17 human immune cell subpopulations by single-cell mass cytometry is confirmed. Finally, the molecular mechanism underlying V4 C3 immune modulation is explored, demonstrating a MXene-mediated downregulation of antigen presentation-associated genes in primary human immune cells. The findings set the basis for further V4 C3 investigation and application as a negative modulator of the immune response in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Soil amendments for vanadium remediation: a review of remediation of vanadium in soil through chemical stabilization and bioremediation

Immobilization of vanadium (V) in soils is one option to prevent groundwater contamination and plant uptake. Phytoremediation, microbial remediation, and chemical stabilization using soil amendments are among the leading environmentally friendly and economically feasible techniques in V remediation. Soil amendments were used to reduce V mobility by immobilizing it in the soil matrix through chemical stabilization, while bioremediation methods such as phytoremediation and microbial remediation were used to remove V from contaminated soils. Vanadium exists in several species and among them V5+ species are the most prevalent, toxic, and soluble form and present as a negatively charged ion (H2VO4- and HVO42-) in oxic soils above pH 4. Amendments used for chemical stabilization can change the physicochemical properties enhancing immobility of V in soil. The pH of the soil environment, point of zero charge of the colloid surface, and redox conditions are some of the most important factors that determine the efficiency of the amendment. Commonly used amendments for chemical stabilization include biochar, zeolites, organic acids, various clay minerals and oxides of elements such as iron, titanium, manganese, and aluminum. For bioremediation, chelating agents and microbial communities are used to mobilize V to enhance phyto-or microbial-extraction procedures. The objectives of this review were to discuss remediation methods of V while considering V speciation and toxicity in soil, and soil amendment application for V removal from soil. The information compiled in this review can guide further research on soil amendments for optimal V remediation in largely contaminated industrial sites.

Bioleaching performance of vanadium-bearing smelting ash by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans for vanadium recovery

The bioleaching process is widely used in the treatment of ores or solid wastes, but little is known about its application in the treatment of vanadium-bearing smelting ash. This study investigated bioleaching of smelting ash with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The vanadium-bearing smelting ash was first treated with 0.1 M acetate buffer and then leached in the culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. Comparison between one-step and two-step leaching process indicated that microbial metabolites could contribute to the bioleaching. The Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans demonstrated a high vanadium leaching potential, solubilizing 41.9% of vanadium from the smelting ash. The optimal leaching condition was determined, which was 1% pulp density, 10% inoculum volume, an initial pH of 1.8, and 3 Fe²⁺g/L. The compositional analysis showed that the fraction of reducible, oxidizable, and acid-soluble was transferred into the leaching liquor. Therefore, as the alternative to the chemical/physical process, an efficient bioleaching process was proposed to enhance the recovery of vanadium from the vanadium-bearing smelting ash.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and oxalic acid mediated vanadium reduction and redistribution in vanadium-containing tailings

The microbially- and chemically-mediated redox process is critical in controlling the fate of vanadium (V) in tailing environment. Although the microbial reduction of V has been widely studied, the coupled biotic reduction mediated by beneficiation reagents and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. Herein, the reduction and redistribution of V in V-containing tailings and Fe/Mn oxide aggregates mediated by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and oxalic acid were explored. The dissolution of Fe-(hydr)oxides by oxalic acid promoted the microbe-mediated V release from solid-phase. After 48-day of reaction, the dissolved V concentrations in the bio-oxalic acid treatment reached maximum values of 1.72 ± 0.36 mg L^-1 and 0.42 ± 0.15 mg L^-1 in the tailing system and the aggregate system, respectively, significantly higher than those in control (0.63 ± 0.14 mg L^-1 and 0.08 ± 0.02 mg L^-1). As the electron donor, oxalic acid enhanced the electron transfer process of S. oneidensis MR-1 for V(V) reduction. The mineralogical characterization of final products indicates that S. oneidensis MR-1 and oxalic acid promoted solid-state conversion from V₂O₅ to NaV₆O₁₅. Collectively, this study demonstrates that microbe-mediated V release and redistribution in solid-phase were promoted by oxalic acid, suggesting that the role of organic agents for the V biogeochemical cycle in natural systems deserves greater attention.

Biodistribution of Vanadium Dioxide Particles in Mice by Consecutive Gavage Administration: Effects of Particle Size, Dosage, and Health Condition of Mice

The newly developed vanadium dioxide (VO₂), a material with excellent reversible and multi-stimuli responsible phase transition property, has been widely used in high-performance and energy-saving smart devices. The rapid growth of the VO₂-based emerging technologies and the complex biological effect of vanadium to organisms urge a better understanding of the behavior of VO₂ in vivo for safety purpose. Herein, we study the absorption, distribution, and excretion of two commercial VO₂ (nanoscale SVO₂ and bulk MVO₂) in mice after consecutive gavage administration for up to 28 days. The absorption of both types of VO₂ is as low as less than 1.5% of the injected dose within 28 days, while MVO₂ is several times more difficult to be absorbed than SVO₂. Almost all unabsorbed VO₂ is excreted through feces. For the absorbed vanadium, bone is the organ with the largest accumulation, followed by liver, kidney, and spleen. The vanadium content in organs shows a size-, dosage-, and animal health condition-dependent manner, and increases gradually to a saturation value along with the consecutive administration. Generally, smaller particle size and higher dosage lead to higher vanadium contents in organs, and more vanadium accumulates in bone and liver in diabetic mice than in normal mice. After the treatment is stopped, the accumulated vanadium in organs decreases a lot within 14 days, even reaches to the background level in some organs, but the content of vanadium in the bone remains high after 14 days post-exposure. These findings provide basic information for the safety assessment and safe applications of VO₂-based materials.

Exposure to multiple metals and diabetes mellitus risk in dong ethnicity in China: from the China multi-ethnic cohort study

Metals play an important role in the development of diabetes mellitus (DM). The association of metals with diabetes among the Dong ethnicity in China remains poorly understood. The current study aimed to evaluate the association of single metal exposure and multi-metal co-exposure with DM risk. Urinary concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, strontium, vanadium, and zinc were measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) among 4479 Dong ethnic participants aged 30-79 years from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study. Based on tertiles, the metal exposure can be divided into three groups: low, middle, and high exposure. Multivariate logistic regression models and principal component analysis were performed to determine exposure to single-metal and multi-metal co-exposure in relation to DM. A decrease in risk of DM was associated with iron (OR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.61-1.00 and 0.68, 0.53-0.88 for the middle and high vs. low) and strontium (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.69-1.12 and 0.67, 0.51-0.86 for the middle and high vs. low), respectively. A principal component 3 (PC3) characterized by iron and strontium showed an inverse association with DM. A principal component 4 (PC4) characterized by manganese and lead positively associated with DM. Exposure to high concentrations of urinary iron and strontium may reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus. This study revealed an increase in the risk of diabetes mellitus by co-exposure to high concentrations of urinary manganese and lead.

A sustainable vanadium bioremediation strategy from aqueous media by two potential green microalgae

Globally, environmental concerns are rapidly growing due to increasing pollution levels. Vanadium is a hazardous heavy metal that poses health issues with an exposure concentration of about 2 ppm. It is regularly discharged by some industries and poses an environmental challenge. There are no sustainable green treatment methods for discharged effluents to mitigate vanadium threats to humans and the environment. In this study, the goal was to develop a green, sustainable method for removing vanadium and to utilize the produced biomass for biofuels, thus offsetting the treatment cost. Microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana SU1 and Picochlorum oklahomensis were employed for vanadium (III) treatment. The maximum removal was 25.5 mg L^-1 with biomass and lipid yields of 3.0 g L^-1 and 884.4 mg L^-1 respectively after 14 days of treatment. The vanadium removal capacity by microalgae was further enhanced up to 2-2.7 folds while optimizing the key parameters, pH, and temperature before removing biomass from the liquid phase. FTIR is used to analyse the reactive groups in algal cell walls to confirm vanadium adsorption and to understand the dominant and quantitative interactions. Zeta potential analysis helps to find out the most suitable pH range to facilitate the ionic bonding of biomass and thus maximum vanadium adsorption. This study addresses regulating external factors for enhancing the removal performance during microalgal biomass harvesting, which significantly enhances the removal of vanadium (III) from the aqueous phase. This strategy aims to improve the removal efficiency of microalgal treatment at an industrial scale for the bioremediation of vanadium and other inorganic pollutants.

Carbon capture technology exploitation for vanadium tailings and assessment of CO2 sequestration potential

In recent years, the global warming trend is still increasing due to CO₂ emissions from various sources, such as electricity, heat production, industry, and transportation. In the vanadium industry, the vanadium bearing shale is of low grade, and the extraction of the required elemental vanadium produces large quantities of vanadium tailings (VTs). Both the roasting pretreatment of vanadium shale during vanadium extraction and the high-temperature calcination process for the preparation of vanadium products generate large amounts of CO₂ gas. Therefore, it is particularly important to find an effective and environmentally friendly method for the treatment of vanadium tailings and CO₂ generated by the vanadium industry. In this study, a potential method for the indirect carbonation of low calcium VTs under atmospheric pressure conditions was investigated. The carbonation reaction was investigated for different ammonia addition factors and different introduced CO₂ concentrations and temperatures. The carbonation experiments showed that under the conditions of coefficient of ammonia addition of 1.4, reaction time of 60 min and reaction temperature of 60 °C, the utilization rate of calcium in VTs reached 97.9% and the CO₂ uptake of VTs at 0.073 g-CO₂/g, indicating that the carbonation of vanadium with low-calcium VTs was effective. The carbonation product was analyzed and measured using TG, XRD, and SEM-EDS, and it was discovered to be CaCO₃, confirming the feasibility of carbonation reaction with vanadium tailings. Furthermore, the characterization of the carbonation product confirmed the mechanism and safety of the carbonation reaction, laying the groundwork for future applications.

Soil covering measure mitigates vanadium loss during short-term simulated rainfall in the vanadium titano-magnetite tailings reservoir

Soil covering is an operative measure to decline pollutant release in tailings reservoirs and promote vegetation restoration, yet urgent research still needs to probe into pollutant leaching and migration in the artifact technology under extreme precipitation. Here, a soil column leaching experiment was designed to explore the migration and behaviors of vanadium (V) in the system of vanadium titano-magnetite tailings (VTMTs) covered by soils with different depths (5 cm, 10 cm, and 15 cm). Chemical fractions of V in the VTMTs and covered soils were analyzed to decipher the mechanisms underlying the V migration. We found a limited V leaching (0.26-0.52 μg/L, <0.01% of total V) in the columns during the experiments, and V in the VTMTs was not apt to be leached or migrate upward to the overlying soils. The soil volumes overlaid had nonsignificant effect on the V behaviors in the VTMTs (P > 0.05), because of the dominant and stable residual V (96.4% of total V) in the tailings. Although acid soluble V might be transformed to oxidizable V, it was resupplied by the fractions of weak-bound V in the solid phases during the leaching experiments. The mineral metal (hydr)oxides (e.g., aluminum, iron) determined the V behaviors in the VTMTs via absorption effect, and the high affinity of V to organic matters probably prevented its migration throughout the overlying soils. The results indicate that soil covering measure in the VTMTs reservoirs effectively reduces V migration or release from the tailings through leaching or upward migration, which provides a significant guidance for vegetation restoration in V-rich tailings reservoirs.

Comparing the toxicity of tungsten and vanadium oxide nanoparticles on Spirulina platensis

The production and release of nanoparticles and their impacts on living organisms are among the most important concerns in the world. Spirulina platensis was chosen because of its ability to absorb more elements than other algae. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to improve the product quality of spirulina exposed to new type of nanoparticles. In this experiment, vanadium oxide nanoparticles (VNPs) and tungsten oxide nanoparticles (WNPs) were used at concentrations of 0, 0.001, 0.017, and 0.05 g/l. The measured indices such as protein percentage and concentrations of phycobiliproteins and carbohydrates were the most important parameters of spirulina. Results showed that the concentration of 0.001 g/l of VNPs significantly affected the amounts of protein and phycocyanin. It has also been observed that 0.001 g/l of WNPs significantly influenced the amounts of protein (5.3%) and phycocyanin (90%); however, WNPs at all concentrations increased the concentrations of protein and phycocyanin. A concentration of 0.05 g/l of WNPs increased phycocyanin content by 83% over the control. The examination of nanoparticles by spirulina showed that VNPs were more adsorbed by spirulina than WNPs. In general, VNPs were toxic to algae at concentrations of 0.017 and 0.05 g/l, but WNPs did not show any fatal toxicity.

Mobility of arsenic and vanadium in waterlogged calcareous soils due to addition of zeolite and manganese oxide amendments

Addition of manganese(IV) oxides (MnO₂ ) and zeolite can affect the mobility of As and V in soils due to geochemical changes that have not been studied well in calcareous, flooded soils. This study evaluated the mobility of As and V in flooded soils surface-amended with MnO₂ or zeolite. A simulated summer flooding study was conducted for 8 weeks using intact soil columns from four calcareous soils. Redox potential was measured in soils, whereas pH, major cations, and As and V concentrations were measured biweekly in pore water and floodwater. Aqueous As and V species were modeled at 0, 4, and 8 weeks after flooding (WAF) using Visual MINTEQ modeling software with input parameters of redox potential, temperature, pH, total alkalinity, and concentrations of major cations and anions. Aqueous As concentrations were below the critical thresholds (<100 μg L^-1 ), whereas aqueous V concentrations exceeded the threshold for sensitive aquatic species (2-80 μg L^-1 ). MnO₂ -amended soils were reduced to sub-oxic levels, whereas zeolite-amended and unamended soils were reduced to anoxic levels by 8 WAF. MnO₂ decreased As and V mobilities, whereas zeolite had no effect on As but increased V mobility, compared to unamended soils. Arsenic mobility increased under anoxic conditions, and V mobility increased under oxic and alkaline pH conditions. Conversion of As(V) to As(III) and V(V) to V(IV) was regulated by MnO₂ in flooded soils. MnO₂ can be used as an amendment in immobilizing As and V, whereas the use of zeolite in flooded calcareous soils should be done cautiously.

Influence of Seminal Metals on Assisted Reproduction Outcome

Increased levels of metal ions in human seminal fluid have a significant correlation with male fertility. Few publications explain the effect of metals in semen and their influence on assisted reproductive treatments. Semen parameters and the levels of twenty-two metals were measured in the seminal fluid of 102 men attended in a Reproductive Unit. Metals were determined by optical emission spectrophotometry. A statistical relationship was found between spermiogram and iron, which was lower than expected in pathological spermiograms (p = 0.032); zinc (p = 0.066), calcium (p = 0.047), and magnesium (p = 0.048) mean levels were higher in normozoospermics. More days of sexual abstinence correlates with higher seminal zinc (p = 0.001) and magnesium levels (p = 0.002). Lower vanadium values were found to be associated with higher fertilization rates (p = 0.039). Higher values of lead (p = 0.052) and vanadium (p = 0.032) were obtained in patients who did not reach 100% embryo cleavage rate. Aluminium (p = 0.042) and sodium (p = 0.002) were found in lower amounts associated with better blastocyst rates. The implantation rate shows an inverse association with women's age and iron and calcium content, compared to magnesium and sodium which presented a significant direct association with this percentage. A significant direct relationship was found between the positive evolution of pregnancy and the values of zinc (p = 0.004), calcium (p = 0.013), potassium (p = 0.002), and magnesium (p = 0.009). The study confirms that zinc, iron, calcium, sodium, aluminium, magnesium, vanadium, and lead have positive-negative effects on reproduction and support the analysis of metals in semen as a new line of study on male fertility with implications for reproductive outcomes.

Polyaniline-Coated Porous Vanadium Nitride Microrods for Enhanced Performance of a Lithium-Sulfur Battery

To solve the slow kinetics of polysulfide conversion reaction in Li-S battery, many transition metal nitrides were developed for sulfur hosts. Herein, novel polyaniline-coated porous vanadium nitride (VN) microrods were synthesized via a calcination, washing and polyaniline-coating process, which served as sulfur host for Li-S battery exhibited high electrochemical performance. The porous VN microrods with high specific surface area provided enough interspace to overcome the volume change of the cathode. The outer layer of polyaniline as a conductive shell enhanced the cathode conductivity, effectively blocked the shuttle effect of polysulfides, thus improving the cycling capacity of Li-S battery. The cathode exhibited an initial capacity of 1007 mAh g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1, and the reversible capacity remained at 735 mAh g^-1 over 150 cycles.

Vanadium-resistant endophytes modulate multiple strategies to facilitate vanadium detoxification and phytoremediation in Pteris vittata

Vanadium (V) contamination of soils poses potential risks to humans and ecosystems. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of endophyte-assisted phytoremediation and to determine the mechanisms involved in V detoxification and plant growth promotion. Results showed that the endophytic bacterium Serratia marcescens PRE01 could successfully colonize the roots and increase the total V uptake of Pteris vittata by 25.4 %, with higher plant biomass and V accumulation in roots. Endophyte inoculation significantly improved the secretion of phytic, malic, and oxalic acids and accelerated FeVO₄ dissolution and subsequent Fe and V uptake in the rhizosphere. Under V stress without inoculation, V removed by shoot uptake, root uptake, and root surface adsorption accounted for 21.76 %, 42.14 %, and 30.93 % of the total V removal efficiency, respectively. To detoxify excess V, PRE01 effectively strengthened the adsorption of V on the root surface, with an increase in its contribution to the total V removal efficiency from 30.93 % to 38.10 %. Furthermore, beneficial endophytes could alleviate oxidative damage caused by V stress by reinforcing the plant antioxidant system and promoting V(V) reduction in root tissues. These findings clearly reveal that inoculation with endophytes is a promising method for modulating multiple strategies to enhance the phytoremediation of V-contaminated soils.
