Foliar application of iron impacts flavonoid glycosylation and promotes flavonoid metabolism in coloured rice

Coloured rice is known as a healthcare food owing its rich flavonoid content. To better understand the effects of iron on the flavonoid metabolism of coloured rice grains, different concentrations of FeSO4 were foliar sprayed on to red rice Yuhongdao 5815 (RR) and black rice Nanheinuo (BR). The results revealed the association of iron with the increased accumulation of anthocyanins in BR and proanthocyanins in RR along with enhancements in their antioxidant capacities and total flavonoid contents. Metabolomic analysis revealed that the differential metabolites between the iron treated coloured rice and the control primarily occurred because of the O-linked glycosylation of aglycones, which are involved in the flavonoid pathway. RR exhibited a significantly higher number of differential metabolites compared with BR. Thus, foliar FeSO4 application affects the O-linked glycosylation and positively regulates flavonoid metabolism.

Improving the electrochemical characteristics and performance of a neutral all-iron flow battery by using the iron reduction bacteria

At present, the all-iron redox flow batteries (RFBs) have greater application potential due to high accessibility of electrolytes compared to traditional RFBs. Meanwhile, although electroactive bacteria can accelerate the electrons transfer, their potential to improve the performance of RFBs has been overlooked. Previously, we had confirmed that ferrous-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) could enhance the performance of an all-iron RFB, therefore we conducted several batch experiments and chronopotentiometry experiments by using the ferric-reducing bacteria (FeRB) or mixed culture (FeOB and FeRB) to demonstrate whether they have the same or stronger effects on Fe3+-DTPA/Na4[Fe(CN)6] RFB. The results showed that the experimental reactors could achieve higher charging current density and initial cathodic potential during constant voltage charging process. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data and cyclic voltammetry curves demonstrated that the polarization impedance increased slower and reduction peak potential of experimental groups also emerged a positive shift compared to CK. According to chronopotentiometry experiments results, the microbes could function at maximum 0.3 M, 12 mA/cm2, and also improved the charging specific capacity. Combined the SEM pictures and microbial composition analysis, the main functional electroactive FeRB were Alcaligenes, Corynebacterium and Bacillus, which indicated to have important potential in improving the performance of RFBs.

Reducing the accumulation of cadmium and phenanthrene in rice by optimizing planting spacing: Role of low-abundance but core rhizobacterial communities

Optimizing planting spacing is a common agricultural practice for enhancing rice growth. However, its effect on the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and phenanthrene (Phen) in soil-rice systems and the response mechanisms of rhizobacteria to co-contaminants remain unclear. This study found that reducing rice planting spacing to 5 cm and 10 cm significantly decreased the bioavailability of Cd (by 7.9 %-29.5 %) and Phen (by 12.9 %-47.6 %) in the rhizosphere soil by converting them into insoluble forms. The increased accumulation of Cd and Phen in roots and iron plaques (IPs) ultimately led to decreased Cd (by 32.2 %-39.9 %) and Phen (by 4.2 %-17.3 %) levels in brown rice, and also significantly affected the composition of rhizobacteria. Specifically, reducing rice planting spacing increased the abundance of low-abundance but core rhizobacteria in the rhizosphere soil and IPs, including Bacillus, Clostridium, Sphingomonas, Paenibacillus, and Leifsonia. These low-abundance but core rhizobacteria exhibited enhanced metabolic capacities for Cd and Phen, accompanied by increased abundances of Cd-resistance genes (e.g., czcC and czcB) and Phen-degradation genes (e.g., pahE4 and pahE1) within the rhizosphere soil and IPs. Reduced planting spacing had no noticeable impact on rice biomass. These findings provide new insights into the role of low-abundance but core rhizobacterial communities in Cd and Phen uptake by rice, highlighting the potential of reduced planting spacing as an eco-friendly strategy for ensuring the safety of rice production on contaminated paddy soils.

The colonization of Penicillium oxalicum SL2 on rice root surface increased Pb interception capacity of iron plaque and decreased Pb uptake by roots

The exploration of microbial resources to reduce Pb accumulation in rice attracted great attention. In this study, we found Penicillium oxalicum SL2, a Pb-tolerant strain with good capability of dissolving phosphorus and stabilizing Pb in soil, was able to colonize on the root surface of rice seedlings without additional carbon sources, and promoted the secretion of metabolites related to amino acid metabolism, organic acid metabolism, signal transduction and other pathways in rhizosphere exudates, in which the secretion of oxalate increased by 47.7 %. However, P. oxalicum SL2 increased Fe(II) proportion and Fe availability on the root surface, resulting in iron plaque content decrease. Moreover, by converting root surface Pb from Pb-Fe state to PbC2O4 and Pb-P compounds, P. oxalicum SL2 increased Pb intercept capacity of iron plaque by 118.0 %. Furthermore, P. oxalicum SL2 regulated element distribution on the root surface, and reduced the relative content of Pb on the maturation zone of root tip, which was conducive to reducing Pb uptake by apoplastic pathway and the risk of Pb accumulation in root system. Our findings further revealed the interaction between P. oxalicum SL2 and rice root, providing a theoretical basis for the development and application of microbial agents in Pb-contaminated farmland.

Nanozyme sensor array based on Fe, Se co-doped carbon material for the discrimination of Sulfur-containing compounds

Developing methods for the accurate identification and analysis of sulfur-containing compounds (SCCs) is of great significance because of their essential roles in living organisms and the diagnosis of diseases. Herein, Se-doping improved oxidase-like activity of iron-based carbon material (Fe-Se/NC) was prepared and applied to construct a four-channel colorimetric sensor array for the detection and identification of SCCs (including biothiols and sulfur-containing metal salts). Fe-Se/NC can realize the chromogenic oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by activating O2 without relying on H2O2, which can be inhibited by different SCCs to diverse degrees to produce different colorimetric response changes as "fingerprints" on the sensor array. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) revealed that nine kinds of SCCs could be well discriminated. The sensor array was also applied for the detection of SCCs with a linear range of 1-50 μM and a limit of detection of 0.07-0.2 μM. Moreover, colorimetric sensor array inspired by the different levels of SCCs in real samples were used to discriminate cancer cells and food samples, demonstrating its potential application in the field of disease diagnosis and food monitoring. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS: In this work, a four-channel colorimetric sensor array for accurate SCCs identification and detection was successfully constructed. The colorimetric sensor array inspired by the different levels of SCCs in real samples were also used to discriminate cancer cells and food samples. Therefore, this Fe-Se/NC based sensor array is expected to be applied in the field of environmental monitoring and environment related disease diagnosis.

Potential retention of dissolved organic matter by soil minerals during wetland water-table fluctuations

Wetlands export large amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) downstream, which is sensitive to water-table fluctuations (WTFs). While numerous studies have shown that WTFs may decrease wetland DOC via enhancing DOC biodegradation, an alternative pathway, i.e., retention of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by soil minerals, remains under-investigated. Here, we conducted a water-table manipulation experiment on intact soil columns collected from three wetlands with varying contents of reactive metals and clay to examine the potential retention of DOM by soil minerals during WTFs. Using batch sorption experiments and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, we showed that mineral (bentonite) sorption mainly retained lignin-, aromatic- and humic-like compounds (i.e., adsorbable compounds), in contrast to the preferential removal of protein- and carbohydrate-like compounds during biodegradation. Seven cycles of WTFs significantly decreased the intensity of adsorbable compounds in DOM (by 50 ± 21% based on fluorescence spectroscopy) and DOC adsorbability (by 2-20% and 1.9-12.7 mg L-1 based on batch sorption experiment), to a comparable extent compared with biodegradable compounds (by 11-32% and 1.6-15.2 mg L-1). Furthermore, oxidation of soil ferrous iron [Fe(II)] exerted a major control on the magnitude of potential DOM retention by minerals, while WTFs increased mineral-bound lignin phenols in the Zoige soil with the highest content of lignin phenols and Fe(II). Collectively, these results suggest that DOM retention by minerals likely played an important role in DOC decrease during WTFs, especially in soils with high contents of oxidizable Fe. Our findings support the 'iron gate' mechanism of soil carbon protection by newly-formed Fe (hydr)oxides during water-table decline, and highlight an underappreciated process (mineral-DOM interaction) leading to contrasting fate (i.e., preservation) of DOC in wetlands compared to biodegradation. Mineral retention of wetland DOC hence deserves more attention under changing climate and human activities.

Rice straw returning enhances cadmium activation by accelerating iron cycling thus hydroxyl radical production in paddy soils during drainage

Straw returning is widely found elevating the bioavailability of cadmium (Cd) in paddy soils with unclear biogeochemical mechanisms. Here, a series of microcosm incubation experiments were conducted and spectroscopic and microscopic analyses were employed. The results showed that returning rice straw (RS) efficiently increased amorphous Fe and low crystalline Fe (II) to promote the production of hydroxyl radicals (OH) thus Cd availability in paddy soils during drainage. On the whole, RS increased OH and extractable Cd by 0.2-1.4 and 0.1-3.3 times, respectively. While the addition of RS effectively improved the oxidation rate of structural Fe (II) mineral (i.e., FeS) to enhance soil Cd activation (up to 38.5 %) induced by the increased OH (up to 69.2 %). Additionally, the existence of CO32- significantly increased the efficiency level on OH production and Cd activation, which was attributed to the improved reactivity of Fe (II) by CO32- in paddy soils. Conclusively, this study emphasizes risks of activating soil Cd induced by RS returning-derived OH, providing a new insight into evaluating the safety of straw recycling.

Method development and validation for the quantitative determination of total flavonoids through the complexation of iron (III) and its application in real sample

BACKGROUND

The determination of flavonoids in real sample using UV-Vis spectrophotometer commonly uses quercetin and catechin with Al+3 complexing agent as reference materials for the calibration of the instrument. However, getting these standard materials is challenging due to its expense and unavailability in the chemical reserve of the country. Moreover, the Al+3 - quercetin complexation standard method demands high amount of quercetin in spite of its high cost. Hence, developing alternative method that can solve this problem is crucial for the determination of flavonoids in the real sample.

RESULTS

An iron-based complexation method for the determination of flavonoids in the real sample was developed that reduces the amount of quercetin by 200 times (1 mg/mL to 0.005 mg/mL) during the calibration of UV-Vis spectroscopy as an alternative method. The reaction parameters (incubation time, pH, and concentration of quercetin) were optimized using software Design Expert 11 and confirmed by the practical experiments. The kinetics of reaction between iron and quercetin was found to be pseudo first order with rate constant of kobs at 340 and 510 nm. The analysis window for the flavonoid complex was achieved with the kinetic discrimination of the interferences at its optimized time of complexation 20 min and absorbance maxima of 510 nm. The developed method was validated by evaluating its precision, accuracy, recovery test (84-117%), detection limit and quantification limit following the standard protocols. The calibration of the instrument has been developed for the new method and the linear regression coefficient (R2) of 0.998 was obtained.

SIGNIFICANCE

Applying the developed standard material (Fe3+ - quercetin complex) gives freedom for the analytical chemists to find the standard materials that is accessible and cheaper than the existing one (Al3+-quercetin complex). The developed method can also be easily applied for determination of flavonoid in the real samples without potential interferences coming from sample matrix.

Relationship between prepregnancy BMI and the concentrations of iron, calcium, and magnesium in serum and hair during the first trimester of pregnancy in women

BACKGROUND

In women of childbearing age, a low dietary supply of iron, calcium, and magnesium is often observed. Minerals deficiency in pregnant women is often associated with abnormal body weight and may impact fetal development disorders. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and the dietary intake of iron, calcium and magnesium and their concentrations in serum and hair in pregnant women.

METHOD

The study involved 97 Caucasian/white low-risk pregnant women at 12 weeks of gestation. The analysis of minerals in serum and hair samples was performed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Pre-pregnancy BMI was calculated based on self-reported weight. The study used a validated questionnaire and a 24-h recall nutrition interview, which were analyzed using Aliant software.

RESULTS

It was found that overweight and obese women exhibited higher magnesium concentration in serum, while iron content in serum and hair was markedly lower compared to women with normal body weight. The average total supply of iron was below the recommendation in pregnant women. Moreover, an inverse significant relationship was observed between BMI and iron concentration in hair and serum in the whole population.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, being overweight or obese before pregnancy is associated with low dietary iron intake and low iron concentration in serum and hair during the first trimester of pregnancy in women.

Investigation of the accuracy of a portable109Cd XRF system for the measurement of iron in skin

We have previously reported the design of a portable109Cd x-ray fluorescence (XRF) system to measure iron levels in the skin of patients with either iron overload disease, such as thalassemia, or iron deficiency disease, such as anemia. In phantom studies, the system was found to have a detection limit of 1.35μg Fe per g of tissue for a dose of 1.1 mSv. However, the system must provide accurate as well as precise measurements of iron levels in the skin in order to be suitable for human studies. The accuracy of the system has been explored using several methods. First, the iron concentrations of ten pigskin samples were assessed using both the portable XRF system and ICP-MS, and the results were compared. Overall, it was found that XRF and ICP-MS reported average values for iron in skin that were comparable to within uncertainties. The mean difference between the two methodologies was not significant, 2.5 ± 4.6μg Fe per g. On this basis, the system could be considered accurate. However, ICP-MS measurements reported a wider range of values than XRF, with two individual samples having ICP-MS results that were significantly elevated (p < 0.05) compared to XRF. SynchrotronμXRF maps of iron levels in pigskin were acquired on the BioXAS beam line of the Canadian Light Source. TheμXRF maps indicated two important features in the distribution of iron in pigskin. First, there were small areas of high iron concentration in the pigskin samples, that were predominantly located in the dermis and hypodermis at depths greater than 0.5 mm. Monte Carlo modelling using the EGS 5 code determined that if these iron 'hot spots' were located towards the back of the skin at depths greater than 0.5 mm, they would not be observed by XRF, but would be measured by ICP-MS. These results support a hypothesis that iron levels in the two samples that reported significantly elevated ICP-MS results compared to XRF may have had small blood vessels at the back of the skin. Second, the synchrotronμXRF maps also showed a narrow (approximately 100μm thick) layer of elevated iron at the surface of the skin. Monte Carlo models determined that, as expected, the XRF system was most sensitive to these skin layers. However, the simulations found that the XRF system, when calibrated against homogenous water-based phantoms, was found to accurately measure average iron levels in the skin of normal pigs despite the greater sensitivity to the surface layer. The Monte Carlo results further indicated that with highly elevated skin surface iron levels, the XRF system would not provide a good estimate of average skin iron levels. The XRF estimate could, with correction factors, provide a good estimate of the iron levels in the surface layers of skin. There is limited data on iron distribution in skin, especially under conditions of disease. If iron levels are elevated at the skin surface by diseases including thalassemia and hemochromatosis, this XRF device may prove to be an accurate clinical tool. However, further data are required on skin iron distributions in healthy and iron overload disease before this system can be verified to provide accurate measurements.

Unveiling a Technosol-based remediation approach for enhancing plant growth in an iron-rich acidic mine soil from the Rio Tinto Mars analog site

This paper explores the potential of Technosols made from non-hazardous industrial wastes as a sustainable solution for highly acidic iron-rich soils at the Rio Tinto mining site (Spain), a terrestrial Mars analog. These mine soils exhibit extreme acidity (pHH2O = 2.1-3.0), low nutrient availability (non-acid cation saturation < 20 %), and high levels of Pb (3420 mg kg-1), Cu (504 mg kg-1), Zn (415 mg kg-1), and As (319 mg kg-1), hindering plant growth and ecosystem restoration. To address these challenges, the study systematically analyzed selected waste materials, formulated them into Technosols, and conducted a four-month pot trial to evaluate the growth of Brassica juncea under greenhouse conditions. Technosols were tailored by adding varying weight percentages of waste amendments into the mine Technosol, specifically 10 %, 25 %, and 50 %. The waste amendments comprised a blend of organic waste (water clarification sludge, WCS) and inorganic wastes (white steel slag, WSS; and furnace iron slag, FIS). The formulations included: (T0) exclusively mine Technosol (control); (T1) 60 % WCS + 40 % WSS; (T2) 60 % WCS + 40 % FIS; and (T3) 50 % WCS + 16.66 % WSS + 33.33 % FIS. The analyses covered leachate quality, soil pore water chemistry, and plant response (germination and survival rates, plant height, and leaf number). Results revealed a significant reduction in leachable contaminant concentrations, with Pb (26.16 mg kg-1), Zn (4.94 mg kg-1), and Cu (2.29 mg kg-1) dropping to negligible levels and shifting towards less toxic species. These changes improved soil conditions, promoting seed germination and seedling growth. Among the formulations tested, Technosol T1 showed promise in overcoming mine soil limitations, enhancing plant adaptation, buffering against acidification, and stabilizing contaminants through precipitation and adsorption mechanisms. The paper stresses the importance of tailoring waste amendments to specific soil conditions, and highlights the broader implications of the Technosol approach, such as waste valorization, soil stabilization, and insights for Brassica juncea growth in extreme environments, including Martian soil simulants.

Constructing Highly Emissive Covalent Organic Frameworks for Fe3+ Ion Detection via Wall Function

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent a new type of crystalline porous polymers that possess pre-designed skeletons, uniform nanopores, and ordered π structure. These attributes make them well-suited for the design of light-emitting materials. However, the majority of COFs exhibits poor luminescence due to aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), resulting from the strong interaction between adjacent layers. To break the limitation, the building units with three methoxy groups on the walls are used to construct TM-OMe-EBTHz-COF, which suppresses the ACQ effects to improve light-emitting activity of COF. The TM-OMe-EBTHz-COF exhibits a notable emission of yellow-green luminescence in the solid state, with a remarkably high absolute quantum yield of 21.1%. The methoxy groups and hydrazine linkage form three coordination sites, contributing to excellent performance in metal ions sensing. The TM-OMe-EBTHz-COF demonstrates high sensitivity and selectivity to Fe3+ ion. Importantly, the low detection limit is below 150 nanomolar, ranking it among the best-performing Fe3+ sensor systems.

Cable bacteria: Living electrical conduits for biogeochemical cycling and water environment restoration

Since the discovery of multicellular cable bacteria in marine sediments in 2012, they have attracted widespread attention and interest due to their unprecedented ability to generate and transport electrical currents over centimeter-scale long-range distances. The cosmopolitan distribution of cable bacteria in both marine and freshwater systems, along with their substantial impact on local biogeochemistry, has uncovered their important role in element cycling and ecosystem functioning of aquatic environments. Considerable research efforts have been devoted to the potential utilization of cable bacteria for various water management purposes during the past few years. However, there lacks a critical summary on the advances and contributions of cable bacteria to biogeochemical cycles and water environment restoration. This review aims to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the current research on cable bacteria, with a particular view on their participation in aquatic biogeochemical cycles and promising applications in water environment restoration. It systematically analyzes (i) the global distribution of cable bacteria in aquatic ecosystems and the major environmental factors affecting their survival, diversity, and composition, (ii) the interactive associations between cable bacteria and other microorganisms as well as aquatic plants and infauna, (iii) the underlying role of cable bacteria in sedimentary biogeochemical cycling of essential elements including but not limited to sulfur, iron, phosphorus, and nitrogen, (iv) the practical explorations of cable bacteria for water pollution control, greenhouse gas emission reduction, aquatic ecological environment restoration, as well as possible combinations with other water remediation technologies. It is believed to give a step-by-step introduction to progress on cable bacteria, highlight key findings, opportunities and challenges of using cable bacteria for water environment restoration, and propose directions for further exploration.

Risk Factors for Thromboembolic Events in Patients With Dialysis-Dependent CKD: Pooled Analysis of Phase 3 Roxadustat Trials in Japan

INTRODUCTION

Thromboembolic events have occurred in clinical trials of roxadustat. This post hoc analysis explored potential factors related to thromboembolic events in dialysis-dependent patients treated with roxadustat in four phase 3 clinical trials in Japan.

METHODS

Thromboembolic events with onset before and after week 12 were evaluated. Baseline risk factors for thromboembolic events were investigated by Cox regression analyses. Nested case-control analyses using conditional logistic models with matched pairs of case-control data explored relationships between thromboembolic events and laboratory parameters.

RESULTS

Of the 444 patients, 56 thromboembolic events were observed in 44 patients during ≤ 52 weeks of treatment. The proportion of venous and arterial thromboembolic events gradually increased after week 12. Baseline risk factors included hemodialysis (vs peritoneal dialysis), advanced age (≥ 65 years), shorter dialysis vintage (< 4 months), and history of thromboembolism. The absence of concomitant intravenous or oral iron therapy (including ferric citrate) was associated with thromboembolic events before week 12 (hazard ratio 11.25; 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.36-37.71; vs presence). Case-control analysis revealed that low average transferrin saturation (< 10%; unadjusted odds ratio [OR] 6.25; 95% CI 1.52-25.62; vs ≥ 20%), high average transferrin level (≥ 2.5 g/L; unadjusted OR 4.36; 95% CI 1.23-15.39; vs < 2.0 g/L), and high average roxadustat dose (≥ 150 mg; unadjusted OR 5.95; 95% CI 1.07-33.16; vs < 50 mg) over the previous 8 weeks before the event onset were associated with thromboembolic events after week 12. However, adjustment for iron status extinguished the significant relationship between roxadustat dose and events. Multivariate case-control analysis showed that increased transferrin from baseline (≥ 1.0 g/L; adjusted OR 7.85; 95% CI 1.82-33.90; vs < 0.5 g/dL) and decreased mean corpuscular volume (< - 2 fL; adjusted OR 5.55; 95% CI 1.73-17.83; vs ≥ 0 fL) were associated with increased risk of thromboembolic events.

CONCLUSION

In addition to established risk factors, iron deficiency may be related to thromboembolic events. Graphical Abstract available for this article.

High pressure homogenization: A promising approach to expand food applications of chia mucilage

Two chia mucilages with different viscosities, obtained by extraction conditions optimized in a previous work, were homogenized by high pressure homogenization (HPH). Particle size, molecular weight, zeta potential, FTIR spectrum, rheological properties, water absorption capacity, water holding capacity and iron binding capacity were determined on both mucilages treated and without treatment. Homogenization led to a significant reduction in viscosity respect to chia mucilage controls, which can be related to the decrease in particle size and molecular weight. A high iron binding capacity was obtained for both mucilages. FTIR spectra of both mucilages with iron showed displacements in bands related with stretching of carboxylic uronic acids, suggesting the interaction site with this mineral. This interaction was also verified by particle size determination with a displacement to higher sizes in the presence of iron. Potential zeta showed a significant reduction in the presence of iron. A model to explain the binding between chia mucilage and iron is proposed. HPH appears as an alternative to expand chia mucilage functionality reducing the viscosity of chia mucilage solutions for the offer of a new ingredient also with optimal levels of hydration and iron binding capacity.

Evaluation of iron-modified biochar on arsenic accumulation by rice: a pathway to assess human health risk from cooked rice

Arsenic (As) contamination of rice grain poses a serious threat to human health. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce the bioavailability of As in the soil and its accumulation in rice grains to ensure the safety of food and human health. In this study, mango (Mangifera indica) leaf-derived biochars (MBC) were synthesized and modified with iron (Fe) to produce FeMBC. In this study, 0.5 and 1% (w/w) doses of MBC and FeMBC were used. The results showed that 1% FeMBC enhanced the percentage of filled grains/panicle and biomass yield by 17 and 27%, respectively, compared to the control. The application of 0.5 and 1% FeMBC significantly (p < 0.05) reduced bioavailable soil As concentration by 33 and 48%, respectively, in comparison to the control. The even higher As flux in the control group as compared to the biochar-treated groups indicates the lower As availability to biochar-treated rice plant. The concentration of As in rice grains was reduced by 6 and 31% in 1% MBC and 1% FeMBC, respectively, compared to the control. The reduction in As concentration in rice grain under 1% FeMBC was more pronounced due to reduced bioavailability of As and enhanced formation of Fe-plaque. This may restrict the entry of As through the rice plant. The concentrations of micronutrients (such as Fe, Zn, Se, and Mn) in brown rice were also improved after the application of both MBC and FeMBC in comparison to the control. This study indicates that the consumption of parboiled rice reduces the health risk associated with As compared to cooked sunned rice. It emphasizes that 1% MBC and 1% FeMBC have great potential to decrease the uptake of As in rice grains.

Machine learning-based soil quality assessment for enhancing environmental monitoring in iron ore mining-impacted ecosystems

In November 2015, a catastrophic rupture of the Fundão dam in Mariana (Brazil), resulted in extensive socio-economic and environmental repercussions that persist to this day. In response, several reforestation programs were initiated to remediate the impacted regions. However, accurately assessing soil health in these areas is a complex endeavor. This study employs machine learning techniques to predict soil quality indicators that effectively differentiate between the stages of recovery in these areas. For this, a comprehensive set of soil parameters, encompassing 3 biological, 16 chemical, and 3 physical parameters, were evaluated for samples exposed to mining tailings and those unaffected, totaling 81 and 6 samples, respectively, which were evaluated over 2 years. The most robust model was the decision tree with a restriction of fewer levels to simplify the tree structure. In this model, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC), Base Saturation (BS), and Effective Cation Exchange Capacity (eCEC) emerged as the most pivotal factors influencing model fitting. This model achieved an accuracy score of 92% during training and 93% during testing for determining stages of recovery. The model developed in this study has the potential to revolutionize the monitoring efforts conducted by regulatory agencies in these regions. By reducing the number of parameters that necessitate evaluation, this enhanced efficiency promises to expedite recovery monitoring, simultaneously enhancing cost-effectiveness while upholding the analytical rigor of assessments.

Effect of iron nanoparticles on chromium adsorption in aqueous solution using magnetic biochar: A site energy distribution analysis

The effects of adding green-synthesized magnetic iron-containing nanoparticles (GSMFe) onto biochar in aqueous solution for the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] were investigated in this study. Nanocomposites, denoted as green synthesis magnetic biochar (GSMB), were created using a green synthesis technique with white tea residue to introduce GSMFe into biochar. Six adsorbents, varying in GSMFe content, were tested for their effectiveness in eliminating Cr(VI), a globally significant hazardous heavy metal. The results demonstrated that incorporating GSMFe into biochar led to significant improvements in adsorption capacity and saturation magnetization. With an increasing amount of GSMFe, the maximum adsorption capacity increased from 2.47 mg/g (EWTWB) to 9.11 mg/g (GSMB4). The highest saturation magnetization was achieved at 13.4 Am2/kg at GSMB4. Similarly, surface areas rose up to 72.9 m2/g at GSMB3 but declined thereafter due to GSMFe aggregation and pore blockage. Sorption behavior for Cr(VI) was assessed using five isotherm models, with the Redlich-Peterson model showing the best fit. The analysis of approximate site energy distribution (SED) indicates that the incorporation of GSMFe enhances the frequency of the entire range of sorption energy sites, while the biochar matrix contributes to a slight increase in medium sorption energy sites within the GSMFe. Among the GSMBs, the difference were more pronounced at low-energy sites than at high-energy sites. At higher energy sites (27,500-40,000 J/mol), sorption site frequencies remained similar, regardless of GSMFe content and associated physicochemical properties. For sorption energy site values exceeding 17,500 J/mol (Cr(VI) concentration below 50 mg/L), GSMB2 is regarded as a more practical choice due to its relatively large area under the frequency distribution curve and commendable cost-effectiveness.

Microbial strategies for phosphorus acquisition in rice paddies under contrasting water regimes: Multiple source tracing by 32P and 33P

Microbial acquisition and utilization of organic and mineral phosphorus (P) sources in paddy soils are strongly dependent on redox environment and remain the key to understand P turnover and allocation for cell compound synthesis. Using double 32/33P labeling, we traced the P from three sources in a P-limited paddy soil: ferric iron-bound phosphate (Fe-P), wheat straw P (Straw-P), and soil P (Soil-P) in microbial biomass P (MBP) and phospholipids (Phospholipid-P) of individual microbial groups depending on water regimes: (i) continuous flooding or (ii) alternate wetting and drying. 32/33P labeling combined with phospholipid fatty acid analysis allowed to trace P utilization by functional microbial groups. Microbial P nutrition was mainly covered by Soil-P, whereas microorganisms preferred to take up P from mineralized Straw-P than from Fe-P dissolution. The main Straw-P mobilizing agents were Actinobacteria under alternating wetting and drying and other Gram-positive bacteria under continuous flooding. Actinobacteria and arbuscular mycorrhiza increased P incorporation into cell membranes by 1.4-5.8 times under alternate wetting and drying compared to continuous flooding. The Fe-P contribution to MBP was 4-5 times larger in bulk than in rooted soil because (i) rice roots outcompeted microorganisms for P uptake from Fe-P and (ii) rhizodeposits stimulated microbial activity, e.g. phosphomonoesterase production and Straw-P mineralization. Higher phosphomonoesterase activities during slow soil drying compensated for the decreased reductive dissolution of Fe-P. Concluding, microbial P acquisition strategies depend on (i) Soil-P, especially organic P, availability, (ii) the activity of phosphomonoesterases produced by microorganisms and roots, and (iii) P sources - all of which depend on the redox conditions. Maximizing legacy P utilization in the soil as a function of the water regime is one potential way to reduce competition between roots and microbes for P in rice cultivation.

Benchtop x-ray fluorescence to quantify elemental content in nails non-destructively

Metals continue to impose health issues among world populations. A non-invasive alternative biomarker for assessment of metals and other elements has been explored in other studies using toenail samples. Some benefits of using toenails as biomarkers over blood samples include cost efficiency, ease of collection, and a longer biological half-life within samples. The objective of this study was to employ desktop XRF for the purpose of measuring metal concentrations in human nail samples, thus conducting a non-destructive assessment. These benefits paired with comparable accuracy in exposure detection could prove toenail samples to be a preferred biomarker for many studies. Current elemental quantification techniques in toenail samples could be improved. The standard practice for measuring metal exposure in toenails, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), has a counterpart in x-ray fluorescence. While maintaining similar quantification capabilities, x-ray fluorescence could provide decreased cost, preservation of samples, and ease of operation. Portable XRF machines have been tested for measuring toenail samples, but they have drastically increased detection limits in comparison to ICP-MS. New benchtop XRF systems should give comparable detection limits to ICP-MS. This study compares the benchtop XRF measurements of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and Selenium (Se) levels to that of ICP-MS measurements of toenail samples and calculates estimated detection limits for 23 other elements. We found strong correlations for the toenail lead (R2 = 0.92), copper (R2 = 0.95), selenium (R2 = 0.60), and iron (R2 = 0.77) comparison between desktop XRF and ICP-MS measurements. Median minimum detection limits over the 23 elements were found to be 0.2 μg/g using a 7.5-min measurement. Benchtop XRF provides a lower detection limit than previously studied portable XRF machines, which gives it the capability of accurately detecting almost any desired element in nail samples. Benchtop XRF provides a non-destructive alternative to ICP-MS in surveillance of nail samples.

Clean and accurate soil quality monitoring in mining areas under environmental rehabilitation in the Eastern Brazilian Amazon

Soil quality monitoring in mining rehabilitation areas is a crucial step to validate the effectiveness of the adopted recovery strategy, especially in critical areas for environmental conservation, such as the Brazilian Amazon. The use of portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry allows a rapid quantification of several soil chemical elements, with low cost and without residue generation, being an alternative for clean and accurate environmental monitoring. Thus, this work aimed to assess soil quality in mining areas with different stages of environmental rehabilitation based on predictions of soil fertility properties through pXRF along with four machine learning algorithms (projection pursuit regression, PPR; support vector machine, SVM; cubist regression, CR; and random forest, RF) in the Eastern Brazilian Amazon. Sandstone and iron mines in different chronological stages of rehabilitation (initial, intermediate, and advanced) were evaluated, in addition to non-rehabilitated and native forest areas. A total of 81 soil samples (26 from sandstone mine and 55 from iron mine) were analyzed by both traditional wet-chemistry methods and pXRF. The available/exchangeable contents of K, Ca, B, Fe, and Al, in addition to H+Al, cation exchange capacity at pH = 7, Al saturation, soil organic matter, pH, sum of bases, base saturation, clay, and sand were accurately predicted (R2 > 0.70) using pXRF data, with emphasis on the prediction of Fe (R2 = 0.93), clay content (R2 = 0.81), H+Al (R2 = 0.81), and K+ (R2 = 0.85). The best predictive models were developed by RF and CR (86%) and when considering pXRF data + mining area + stage of rehabilitation (73%). The results highlight the potential of pXRF to accurately assess soil properties in environmental rehabilitation areas in the Amazon region (yet scarcely evaluated under this approach), promoting a more agile and cheaper preliminary diagnosis compared to traditional methods.

Trace metals and nutrient analysis of marine fish species from the Gwadar coast

Trace metals are naturally occurring metals found in very small concentrations in the environment. In the context of fish flesh, metals such as copper, calcium, potassium, sodium, zinc, iron, and manganese are absorbed by fish and play vital roles in various physiological functions. However, if these metals exceed the recommended limits set by WHO/FAO, they are termed 'toxic metals' due to their harmful impacts on both the fish and its consumers. Therefore, the present study aims to analyze the levels of protein, lipids, and certain metals-Aluminum (Al), Sodium (Na), Zinc (Zn), Titanium (Ti), Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Potassium (K), and Calcium (Ca) in three commercially important marine fishes i.e. Rastrelliger kanagurta, Sardinella abella, and Otolithes ruber. The study also aims to assess their potential impact on human health. The macro-Kjeldhal method and Soxhlet apparatus were used to estimate protein and lipid contents, while atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was used to estimate trace metals found in fishes. The study found that these fish species are valuable sources of protein, lipids, and certain essential minerals. The protein content (CP) in these three species ranged from 63.35 to 86.57%, while lipid content was from 21.05 to 23.86%. The overall results of the trace metal concentrations analyzed in the present study revealed that Aluminum (Al), Sodium (Na), Zinc (Zn), Titanium (Ti), Copper (Cu), Potassium (K), and Calcium (Ca) were found in low concentration or traces and also within suitable ranges as set by WHO/FAO. However, Iron (Fe) was absent in all three species. Moreover, both copper and potassium were found in all three species, while Zinc was present in Rastrelliger kanagurta and Sardinella abella, calcium in Sardinella abella, and sodium in Otolithes ruber only. Titanium was recorded for the first time in S. abella. However, the total health risk assessment associated with these fish food consumption was measured by THQ and TTHQ and found to be less than 1, which shows no potential risk related to trace metals found in these fishes on human health upon their consumption. In conclusion, these commercially important marine fish species were found valuable sources of protein, lipids, and essential trace minerals that are necessary for human health. Thus, the current study provides useful information for the local population to make informed decisions about their daily diets and highlights the importance of sustainable fishing practices to maintain these valuable marine resources by periodical monitoring of their ecosystem.

Elucidating polyethylene microplastic degradation mechanisms and metabolic pathways via iron-enhanced microbiota dynamics in marine sediments

The extensive use of plastics has given rise to microplastics, a novel environmental contaminant that has sparked considerable ecological and environmental concerns. Biodegradation offers a more environmentally friendly approach to eliminating microplastics, but their degradation by marine microbial communities has received little attention. In this study, we used iron-enhanced marine sediment to augment the natural bacterial community and facilitate the decomposition of polyethylene (PE) microplastics. The introduction of iron-enhanced sediment engendered an augmented bacterial biofilm formation on the surface of polyethylene (PE), thereby leading to a more pronounced degradation effect. This novel observation has been ascribed to the oxidative stress-induced generation of a variety of oxygenated functional groups, including hydroxyl (-OH), carbonyl (-CO), and ether (-C-O) moieties, within the microplastic substrate. The analysis of succession in the community structure of sediment bacteria during the degradation phase disclosed that Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas emerged as the principal bacterial players in PE degradation. These taxa were directly implicated in oxidative metabolic pathways facilitated by diverse oxidase enzymes under iron-facilitated conditions. The present study highlights bacterial community succession as a new pivotal factor influencing the complex biodegradation dynamics of polyethylene (PE) microplastics. This investigation also reveals, for the first time, a unique degradation pathway for PE microplastics orchestrated by the multifaceted marine sediment microbiota. These novel insights shed light on the unique functional capabilities and internal biochemical mechanisms employed by the marine sediment microbiota in effectively degrading polyethylene microplastics.

Straw with different fermentation degrees mediate Se/Cd bioavailability by governing the putative iron reducing bacteria

Straw returning is a crucial agronomic practice in fields due to its various benefits. However, effects and mechanisms of straw with different fermentation degrees on Se and Cd bioavailability have not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, straw with different fermentation degrees were applied to a Cd-contaminated seleniferous soil to investigate their effects on Se and Cd bioavailability. Results revealed that the effects of straw application on Se/Cd bioavailability in soil depended on the fermentation degrees of straw. Both original and slightly fermented straw had pronounced impacts on microbial iron reduction compared to fully fermented straw, and thus led to a significant increase in Se and Cd bioavailability. The linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) showed that norank_f_Symbiobacteraceae, Micromonospora, WCHB1-32, Ruminiclostrdium, and Cellulomonas were the major biomarkers at genus level in straw application soils, additional network analysis and random forest analysis suggested that Ruminiclostrdium and Cellulomonas might be implicated in microbial iron reduction. Furthermore, the microbial iron reduction had negative effects on mineral-associated Se with coefficient of -0.81 and positive effects on mineral-associated Cd with coefficient of 0.72, while Mn fractions exhibited positive effects on mineral-associated Se with a coefficient of 0.53 and negative effects on mineral-associated Cd. In conclusion, straw with different fermentation degrees governed Se and Cd mobility by regulating abundance of Ruminiclostrdium and Cellulomonas, subsequently affecting Fe and Mn fractions and consequently influencing Se and Cd bioavailability.

EDXRF and the relative presence of K, Ca, Fe and as in amyloidogenic tissues

Trace and minor elements play crucial roles in a variety of biological processes, including amyloid fibrils formation. Mechanisms include activation or inhibition of enzymatic reactions, competition between elements and metal proteins for binding positions, also changes to the permeability of cellular membranes. These may influence carcinogenic processes, with trace and minor element concentrations in normal and amyloid tissues potentially aiding in cancer diagnosis and etiology. With the analytical capability of the spectroscopic technique X-ray fluorescence (XRF), this can be used to detect and quantify the presence of elements in amyloid characterization, two of the trace elements known to be associated with amyloid fibrils. In present work, involving samples from a total of 22 subjects, samples of normal and amyloid-containing tissues of heart, kidney, thyroid, and other tissue organs were obtained, analyzed via energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). The elemental distribution of potassium (K), calcium (Ca), arsenic (As), and iron (Fe) was examined in both normal and amyloidogenic tissues using perpetual thin slices. In amyloidogenic tissues the levels of K, Ca, and Fe were found to be less than in corresponding normal tissues. Moreover, the presence of As was only observed in amyloidogenic samples; in a few cases in which there was an absence of As, amyloid samples were found to contain Fe. Analysis of arsenic in amyloid plaques has previously been difficult, often producing contradictory results. Using the present EDXRF facility we could distinguish between amyloidogenic and normal samples, with potential correlations in respect of the presence or concentration of specific elements.

Green industry work: production of FeCl3 from iron and steel industry waste (mill scale) and its use in wastewater treatment

Mill scale (MS) is considered to be a significant metallurgical waste, but there is no economical method yet to utilize its metal content. In this study, which covers various processes in several stages, the solution of iron in MS, which is the Iron and Steel Industry (I&SI) waste, as FeCl3 (MS-FeCl3) in the thermoreactor in the presence of HCl, was investigated. In the next step, the conditions for using this solution as a coagulant in the treatment of I&SI wastewater were investigated using the jar test. The results of the treated water sample were compared by chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), color, and turbidity analyses using commercial aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3) and FeCl3 (C-FeCl3). Additionally, heavy metal analyses were conducted, and the treatment performance of three coagulants was presented. Accordingly, while 2.0 mg/L anionic polyelectrolyte was consumed at a dosage of 4.05 mg/L Al2(SO4)3 at pH 7.0, 0.25 mg/L anionic polyelectrolyte was consumed at a dosage of 1.29 mg/L at pH 5.0 in the C-FeCl3 and MS-FeCl3 studies. Also, Fe, Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb removal efficiencies were over 93.56% for all three coagulant usage cases. The results showed that the wastewater treatment performance of MS-FeCl3 by the recycling of MS, which is an I&SI waste, was at the same level as C-FeCl3. Thus, thanks to recycling, waste scale can be used as an alternative to commercial products for green production.

Performance of 4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole derived highly selective 'Turn-Off' fluorescent chemosensor for iron(III) ions detection and biological applications

Two fluorescent chemosensors, denoted as chemosensor 1 and chemosensor 2, were synthesized and subjected to comprehensive characterization using various techniques. The characterization techniques employed were Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), proton (1 H)- and carbon-13 (13 C)-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Chemosensor 1 is composed of a 1H-imidazole core with specific substituents, including a 4-(2-(4,5-c-2-yl)naphthalene-3-yloxy)butoxy)naphthalene-1-yl moiety. However, chemosensor 2 features a 1H-imidazole core with distinct substituents, such as 4-methyl-2-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole-2-yl)phenoxy)butoxy)-5-methylphenyl. Chemosensor 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. Both chemosensors 1 and 2 exhibit a discernible fluorescence quenching response selectively toward iron(III) ion (Fe3+ ) at 435 and 390 nm, respectively, in dimethylformamide (DMF) solutions, distinguishing them from other tested cations. This fluorescence quenching is attributed to the established mechanism of chelation quenched fluorescence (CHQF). The binding constants for the formation of the 1 + Fe3+ and 2 + Fe3+ complexes were determined using the modified Benesi-Hildebrand equation, yielding values of approximately 2.2 × 103 and 1.3 × 104  M-1 , respectively. The calculated average fluorescence lifetimes for 1 and 1 + Fe3+ were 2.51 and 1.17 ns, respectively, while for 2 and 2 + Fe3+ , the lifetimes were 1.13 and 0.63 ns, respectively. Additionally, the applicability of chemosensors 1 and 2 in detecting Fe3+ in live cells was demonstrated, with negligible observed cell toxicity.

Arsenic biogeochemical cycling association with basin-scale dynamics of microbial functionality and organic matter molecular composition

Geogenic arsenic (As)-contaminated groundwater is a sustaining global health concern that is tightly constrained by multiple interrelated biogeochemical processes. However, a complete spectrum of the biogeochemical network of high-As groundwater remains to be established, concurrently neglecting systematic zonation of groundwater biogeochemistry on the regional scale. We uncovered the geomicrobial interaction network governing As biogeochemical pathways by merging in-field hydrogeochemical monitoring, metagenomic analyses, and ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) characterization of dissolved organic matter. In oxidizing to weakly reducing environments, the nitrate-reduction and sulfate-reduction encoding genes (narGHI, sat) inhibited the dissolution of As-bearing iron minerals, leading to lower As levels in groundwater. In settings from weakly to moderately reducing, high abundances of sulfate-reduction and iron-transport encoding genes boosted iron mineral dissolution and consequent As release. As it evolved to strongly reducing stage, elevated abundance of methane cycle-related genes (fae, fwd, fmd) further enhanced As mobilization in part by triggering the formation of gaseous methylarsenic. During redox cycling of N, S, Fe, C and As in groundwater, As migration to groundwater and immobilization in mineral particles are geochemically constrained by basin-scale dynamics of microbial functionality and DOM molecular composition. The study constructs a theoretical model to summarize new perspectives on the biogeochemical network of As cycling.

Linking Zetaproteobacterial diversity and substratum type in iron-rich microbial mats from the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field (EMSO-Azores observatory)

Zetaproteobacteria have been reported in different marine and terrestrial environments all over the globe. They play an essential role in marine iron-rich microbial mats, as one of their autotrophic primary producers, oxidizing Fe(II) and producing Fe-oxyhydroxides with different morphologies. Here, we study and compare the Zetaproteobacterial communities of iron-rich microbial mats from six different sites of the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal Field through the use of the Zetaproteobacterial operational taxonomic unit (ZetaOTU) classification. We report for the first time the Zetaproteobacterial core microbiome of these iron-rich microbial mats, which is composed of four ZetaOTUs that are cosmopolitan and essential for the development of the mats. The study of the presence and abundance of different ZetaOTUs among sites reveals two clusters, which are related to the lithology and permeability of the substratum on which they develop. The Zetaproteobacterial communities of cluster 1 are characteristic of poorly permeable substrata, with little evidence of diffuse venting, while those of cluster 2 develop on hydrothermal slabs or deposits that allow the percolation and outflow of diffuse hydrothermal fluids. In addition, two NewZetaOTUs 1 and 2 were identified, which could be characteristic of anthropic iron and unsedimented basalt, respectively. We also report significant correlations between the abundance of certain ZetaOTUs and that of iron oxide morphologies, indicating that their formation could be taxonomically and/or environmentally driven. We identified a new morphology of Fe(III)-oxyhydroxides that we named "corals." Overall, our work contributes to the knowledge of the biogeography of this bacterial class by providing additional data from the Atlantic Ocean, a lesser-studied ocean in terms of Zetaproteobacterial diversity.IMPORTANCEUp until now, Zetaproteobacterial diversity studies have revealed possible links between Zetaproteobacteria taxa, habitats, and niches. Here, we report for the first time the Zetaproteobacterial core microbiome of iron-rich mats from the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal Field (LSHF), as well as two new Zetaproteobacterial operational taxonomic units (NewZetaOTUs) that could be substratum specific. We highlight that the substratum on which iron-rich microbial mats develop, especially because of its permeability to diffuse hydrothermal venting, has an influence on their Zetaproteobacterial communities. Moreover, our work adds to the knowledge of the biogeography of this bacterial class by providing additional data from the hydrothermal vent sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. In addition to the already described iron oxide morphologies, we identify in our iron-rich mats a new morphology that we named corals. Finally, we argue for significant correlations between the relative abundance of certain ZetaOTUs and that of iron oxide morphologies, contributing to the understanding of the drivers of iron oxide production in iron-oxidizing bacteria.

Effects of freeze-thaw action on in vivo and in vitro bioavailability of arsenic in soils from derelict industrial sites

Arsenic is a metalloid with carcinogenic properties and has been classified as a Category I carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Freeze-thaw processes affect the migration and transformation of soil heavy metals, as well as adsorption/desorption and redox reactions. However, there is limited research directly addressing the impact of freeze-thaw processes on the bioavailability of soil heavy metals. In this study, we focused on As and selected As-contaminated soil samples from three types of legacy sites in heavy industrial areas. Under controlled freeze-thaw experimental conditions, we utilized both in vivo and in vitro bioavailability measurement methods to investigate whether and how freeze-thaw processes affect the bioavailability of soil As. The results of this study showed that freeze-thaw processes reduced soil pH (P < 0.05), CEC, SOM, and particle size, with decreases of 0.33, 1.2 cmol/kg, 5.2 g/kg, and 54 µm, respectively. It also increased weight specific surface area (BET) (P < 0.05), with an increase of 300 m2/kg. Freeze-thaw processes increased the proportions of exchangeable (P < 0.05), carbonate-bound, and iron-manganese oxide-bound As (P < 0.05), but reduced the proportions of organic-bound and residual As (P < 0.05). Freeze-thaw processes significantly increased the relative bioavailability and bioaccessibility of As, with increases of 32 ± 9.6% and 13 ± 0.23%, respectively. Soil pH, SOM, BET and electronic conductivity (EC) were identified as factors which could contribute to the increased bioavailability of As due to freeze-thaw processes. These results provide new insights and evidence for refining the assessment of human health risks associated with heavy metal contamination in polluted soils.

Control of odorants in swine manure and food waste co-composting via zero-valent iron /H2O2 system

Odors have posed challenges to the advancement of aerobic composting. This work aims to identify the primary components responsible for odors and assess the effectiveness and mechanisms of the zero-valent iron/H2O2 system controlling various odorants in aerobic composting. Swine manure and food waste were used as composting materials, with the addition of zero-valent iron and hydrogen peroxide to mitigate odor emissions. Results revealed that odorants included ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and 22 types of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with ethyl acetate, heptane, and dimethyl disulfide being predominant. Among the odorants emitted, ammonia accounted for 75.43%, hydrogen sulfide for 0.09%, and identified VOCs for 24.48%. The ZVI/H2O2 system showed a significant reduction in ammonia and VOCs emission, with the reduction of 51% (ammonia) and 41.3% (VOCs) respectively, primarily observed during the thermophilic period. The occurrence of Fenton-like reactions and changes in key microbial populations were the main mechanisms accounting for odor control. The occurrence of Fenton-like reaction was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and reactive oxygen detection, showing the oxidation of zero-valent iron by H2O2 to higher valence elemental iron, and the simultaneous production of ·OH. Microbial analysis indicated that an enrichment of specific microorganisms with Bacillus contributed to feammonx and Bacillaceae contributed to organic biodegradation. Redundancy analysis highlighted the role of key microbial species (Bacillaceae, Bacillus, and Ureibacillus) in effectively reducing the level of ammonia and volatile organic compounds. These novelty findings illustrated that the potential of this system is promising for controlling the emission of odorants and aerobic composting reinforcement.

Coupling of polyhydroxybutyrate and zero-valent iron for enhanced treatment of nitrate pollution within the Permeable Reactive Barrier and its downgradient aquifer

Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) have been utilized for mitigating nitrate pollution in groundwater systems through the use of solid carbon and iron fillers that release diverse nutrients to enhance denitrification efficiency. We conduct laboratory column tests to evaluate the effectiveness of PRBs in remediating nitrate pollution both within the PRB and in the downgradient aquifer. We use an iron-carbon hydrogel (ICH) as PRB filler, which has different weight ratios of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI). Results reveal that denitrification in the downgradient aquifer accounts for at least 19.5 % to 32.5 % of the total nitrate removal. In the ICH, a higher ratio of PHB to mZVI leads to higher contribution of the downgradient aquifer to nitrate removal, while a lower ratio results in smaller contribution. Microbial community analysis further reveals that heterotrophic and mixotrophic bacteria dominate in the downgradient aquifer of the PRB, and their relative abundance increases with a higher ratio of PHB to mZVI in the ICH. Within the PRB, autotrophic and iron-reducing bacteria are more prevalent, and their abundance increases as the ratio of PHB to mZVI in the ICH decreases. These findings emphasize the downgradient aquifer's substantial role in nitrate removal, particularly driven by dissolved organic carbon provided by PHB. This research holds significant implications for nutrient waste management, including the prevention of secondary pollution, and the development of cost-effective PRBs.

Synergetic effect of nitrate on dissolved organic carbon attenuation through dissimilatory iron reduction during aquifer storage and recovery

Aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) is a promising water management technique in terms of quantity and quality. During ASR, iron (Fe) (hydr)oxides contained in the aquifer play a crucial role as electron acceptors in attenuating dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in recharging water through dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR). Considering the preference of electron acceptors, nitrate (NO3⁻), possibly coexisting with DOC as the prior electron acceptor to Fe (hydr)oxides, might influence DIR by interrupting electron transfer. However, this phenomenon is yet to be clarified. In this study, we systematically investigated the potential effect of NO3⁻ on DOC attenuation during ASR using a series of sediment columns representing typical aquifer conditions. The results suggest that DOC attenuation could be enhanced by the presence of NO3⁻. Specifically, total DOC attenuation was notably higher than that from the stoichiometric calculation simply employing NO3⁻ as the additional electron acceptor to Fe (hydr)oxides, implying a synergetic effect of NO3⁻ in the overall reactions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyzes revealed that the Fe(II) ions released from DIR transformed the Fe (hydr)oxides into a less bioavailable form, inhibiting further DIR. In the presence of NO3⁻, however, no aqueous Fe(II) was detected, and another form of Fe (hydr)oxide appeared on the sediment surface. This may be attributed to nitrate-dependent Fe(II) oxidation (NDFO), in which Fe(II) is (re)oxidized into Fe (hydr)oxide, which is available for the subsequent DOC attenuation. These mechanisms were supported by the dominance of DIR-relevant bacteria and the growth of NDFO-related bacteria in the presence of NO3⁻.

Biochemical Assessments of Six Species of Edible Coastal Algae Collected from Tabuk Region in Saudi Arabia

In the first study focusing on the Red Sea's Tabuk coast, six edible species of the most common algae were collected to evaluate their approximate composition using AOAC methods, amino acids using ion-exchange chromatography, minerals using atomic absorption spectroscopy, phenolic compounds using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, and ferric-reducing antioxidant power. All the data were significantly (p < 0.05) different among all the studied species. The data indicated that the protein content ranged from 9.25% for A. nodosum to 20.06% for H. musciformis. C. racemosa had the highest lipid content of 7.57%. Phosphors varied from 68.2 mg/100 g for A. nodosum to 406 mg/100 g for D. simplex. The largest amounts of calcium (2458 mg/100 g) and iron (29.79 mg/100 g) were found in C. racemosa. The total essential amino acids ranged between 38.16 and 46.82% for A. nodosum and D. simplex, respectively. F. vesiculosus had the maximum content of phenolic compounds (11.06 mg GAE/g). A. nodosum had the highest antioxidant capacity (1.78 mg TE/g). The research concluded that algae are the main effort toward sustainable agriculture to meet the world's food needs. that algae may be used to improve food naturally. To satisfy the criteria for sustainable food, which is one of the pillars of NEOM, numerous studies are required to investigate the natural products available in the Red Sea.

Changes in arsenic mobility and speciation across a 2000-year-old paddy soil chronosequence

Rice accumulates arsenic (As) when cultivated under flooded conditions in paddy soils threatening rice yield or its safety for human consumption, depending on As speciation. During long-term paddy use, repeated redox cycles systematically alter soil biogeochemistry and microbiology. In the present study, incubation experiments from a 2000-year-old paddy soil chronosequence revealed that As mobilization and speciation also change with paddy soil age. Younger paddies (≤100 years) showed the highest total As mobilization, with speciation dominated by carcinogenic inorganic oxyarsenic species and highly mobile inorganic thioarsenates. Inorganic thioarsenates formed by a high availability of reduced sulfur (S) due to low concentrations of reducible iron (Fe) and soil organic carbon (SOC). Long-term paddy use (>100 years) resulted in higher microbial activity and SOC, increasing the share of phytotoxic methylated As. Methylated oxyarsenic species are precursors for cytotoxic methylated thioarsenates. Methylated thioarsenates formed in soils of all ages being limited either by the availability of methylated As in young soils or that of reduced-S in older ones. The present study shows that via a linkage of As to the biogeochemistry of Fe, S, and C, paddy soil age can influence the kind and the extent of threat that As poses for rice cultivation.

[Using Biochar and Iron-calcium Material to Remediate Paddy Soil Contaminated by Cadmium and Arsenic]

In this study, iron-calcium material (FC) and hickory-cattail biochar (BC) were applied to prepare composite material (BF), which was used to repair the combined pollution of cadmium and arsenic in paddy soil to reduce the content of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in rice grain. Soil pore water, rhizosphere soil, bulk soil, rice plants, and root iron plaque samples were collected during the growth period of rice in a pot experiment to explore the effects and mechanism of FC, BC, and BF on the bioavailability of Cd and As in paddy soil and their contents in plants. The results showed that biochar could significantly (P < 0.05) increase the pH value of bulk soil (0.55-0.66 units) and rhizosphere soil (0.28-0.36 units) and elevate the soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content. FC material could significantly (P < 0.05) reduce the pH of bulk soil (0.14-0.27 units) and rhizosphere soil (0.38-0.41 units), as well as the soil DOC content. Iron-calcium materials and composite could simultaneously reduce the contents of available Cd and As in soil pore water, rhizosphere soil, and bulk soil, whereas biochar could reduce the content of Cd but increase the content of As. Among them, a 1% addition of composite had the best effect. The available Cd and As in soil decreased by 41.8%-48.2% and 6.1%-10.1%, respectively. Biochar, iron-calcium materials, and composites improved plant biomass (dry weight of root, stem, leaf, and grain). For example, the dry weights of rice grains under these treatments were higher (48.5%-184.0%) than that of CK, as was the root iron plaque content (7.5%-13.6%). Compared with that in the CK, biochar could effectively reduce the Cd content in rice grain by 21.0%-26.1%. Iron-calcium material and composite could simultaneously reduce the Cd and As contents in rice grain. Among them, the BF treatment had the best effect on the reduction of Cd and As in rice grain, with a decrease of 36.9%-42.0% and 40.4%-44.4%, respectively. The Cd and As contents in rice grain were lower than the national standard values (GB 2762-2017).

Assessing the mediating role of iron status on associations between an industry-relevant metal mixture and verbal learning and memory in Italian adolescents

BACKGROUND

Metals, including lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr) and copper (Cu), have been associated with neurodevelopment; iron (Fe) plays a role in the metabolism and neurotoxicity of metals, suggesting Fe may mediate metal-neurodevelopment associations. However, no study to date has examined Fe as a mediator of the association between metal mixtures and neurodevelopment.

OBJECTIVE

We assessed Fe status as a mediator of a mixture of Pb, Mn, Cr and Cu in relation to verbal learning and memory in a cohort of Italian adolescents.

METHODS

We used cross-sectional data from 383 adolescents (10-14 years) in the Public Health Impact of Metals Exposure Study. Metals were quantified in blood (Pb) or hair (Mn, Cr, Cu) using ICP-MS, and three markers of Fe status (blood hemoglobin, serum ferritin and transferrin) were quantified using luminescence assays or immunoassays. Verbal learning and memory were assessed using the California Verbal Learning Test for Children (CVLT-C). We used Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression Causal Mediation Analysis to estimate four mediation effects: the natural direct effect (NDE), natural indirect effect (NIE), controlled direct effect (CDE) and total effect (TE). Beta (β) coefficients and 95 % credible intervals (CIs) were estimated for all effects.

RESULTS

The metal mixture was jointly associated with a greater number of words recalled on the CVLT-C, but these associations were not mediated by Fe status. For example, when ferritin was considered as the mediator, the NIE for long delay free recall was null (β = 0.00; 95 % CI = -0.22, 0.23). Conversely, the NDE (β = 0.23; 95 % CI = 0.01, 0.44) indicated a beneficial association of the mixture with recall that operated independently of Fe status.

CONCLUSION

An industry-relevant metal mixture was associated with learning and memory, but there was no evidence of mediation by Fe status. Further studies in populations with Fe deficiency and greater variation in metal exposure are warranted.

Impact of iron addition on phosphorus dynamics in sediments of a shallow peat lake 10 years after treatment

Internal phosphorus (P) loading is a key water quality challenge for shallow lakes. Addition of iron (Fe) salts has been used to enhance P retention in lake sediments. However, its effects on sediment geochemistry are poorly studied, albeit pivotal for remediation success. Here, we assess the factors controlling the retention of P and long-term effects following application of FeCl3 (0.5-1 mol Fe/m2, 2010) in the eutrophic, shallow peat lake Terra Nova (the Netherlands). Treatment reduced P levels in the lake for two years, but afterwards summer release of P intensified, resulting in higher surface water P concentrations than before treatment. Porewater and sediment analyses indicate that the majority of the added Fe is still undergoing redox cycling within the top 10 cm of sediment accounting for the binding of up to 70 % of sedimentary P. Sequential extractions further suggest that organic matter (OM) plays a key role in the resulting P and Fe dynamics: While reduction of P binding Fe(III) phases results in P release to porewaters, the produced Fe2+ remains bound to the solid phase presumably stabilized by OM. This causes P release from the sediments in excess to Fe during temporary low oxygen conditions in summer months, as confirmed by whole core flux incubation experiments. Quantitative coprecipitation of P with Fe upon reoxygenation of the water body is then impossible, leading to a gradual increase in surface water P. This first long-term study on a shallow peat lake underpins the role of OM for Fe cycling and the need to carefully consider the sediment properties and diagenetic pathways in the planning of Fe-amendments.

Using spatiotemporal ratio analyses to quantitatively estimate water quality recovery of the Rio Doce

The Fundão Dam breached on 5 November 2015 (the "Event"), resulting in the release of tailings, water, scoured sediment and/or soil, and other debris to downstream watercourses. Statistical analyses using historical and recent water quality measurements were conducted to assess the extent to which water quality in the Rio Doce was recovering to baseline conditions. A review of station- and/or parameter-specific water quality time series in the Rio Doce revealed two challenges: pre-Event data imbalance and seasonality. Due to the combined effects of these two factors, data gathered from Rio Doce water quality stations before the Event likely underestimated concentration ranges and limited the usefulness of common recovery assessment techniques such as times series and water quality standard exceedance analyses. These challenges were addressed by calculating quarterly and watershed-specific river-to-tributary ratios. R code was used to produce spatiotemporal time series for 44 investigated parameters that were measured both before and after the Event. The water quality recovery durations shown by the parameter- and/or region-specific river-to-tributary ratio time series indicated that (a) turbidity provides the most conservative measure for water quality recovery; (b) chemical parameters associated with the tailings, like manganese and iron recovered faster than turbidity; and (c) other investigated parameters unrelated to the tailings showed either no discernable impact or rapid recovery after the Event. The resulting parameter- and/or region-specific river-to-tributary ratio time series provided reliable and quantifiable estimates of water quality recovery durations. The water quality in the region furthest from Fundão Dam, in Espírito Santo, recovered one year after the Event, while water quality in the closest region to Fundão Dam, upstream of Risoleta Neves (Candonga) Dam, recovered 4.2 years after the Event. Haptoglobin gene polymorphism and iron profile in sickle cell disease patients with inflammation in Yaounde, Cameroon

BACKGROUND

Major sickle cell syndromes are the most common hemoglobinopathy in the world. The sickle cell patients are subjected to several factors causing inflammation, and the genetic identification of each individual allows to focus the possibility of allelic variations influence of a specific gene and then the polymorphism. This study aims at determining the distribution of HP gene (OMIM#140100) and their involvement on hematological parameters and the iron profile in the sickle cell patients presenting an inflammation condition during major sickle cell syndromes in Cameroun.

METHODS

A case-control analytical study has been conducted over a period of 6 months. Cases consisting of sickle cell patients in a situation of inflammation and control of non-inflamed sickle cell patients. The patients presenting major sickle cell syndromes, interned and/or followed at the Hematology Department of the Regional Hospital of Bafoussam and the Central Hospital of Yaoundé have been recruited. HP genotyping was carried out at the Laboratory for Public Health Research Biotechnologies (LAPHER-Biotech) in Yaoundé using allele-specific PCR. Also, inflammatory, hematological parameters and martial assessment were explored by standard methods. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the statistical tool R version 4.1.1. The comparison of proportions of alleles was made with the chi-square test, and the Wilcoxon test was used to compare the median between different groups using the statistical tool R version 4.1.1.

RESULTS

We analyzed the samples of 149 patients. The HP polymorphism describes a significant frequency of the "1F" allele (69.8%) followed by the "2" allele (46.31%). In addition, 80 patients (53.69%), 48 (32.21%), and 21 (14.09%) presented the genotype HP 1-1, HP 2-1, and HP 2-2, respectively. And eighty-one percent (81%) patients with genotype HP 2-2 showed a significant higher relative frequency of thrombocytosis compared with the genotype HP 1-1 and HP 2-1, respectively (51.2% and 68.8%, p = 0.087). The proportion of inflammation in the HP 2-2 group was higher (57.1%) compared with the other groups (respectively 42.5% and 35.4% in the HP 1-1 and HP 2-1 groups). Furthermore, the median CRP was significantly higher in the HP 2-2 group compared with the other groups (p = 0.039). Moreover, the entire population of the HP 2-2 group showed an elevation of ferritin and IL6 unlike the HP 1-1 and HP 2-1 groups.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrates a higher frequency of genotype HP 1-1 followed by the HP 2-2 genotype in patients with major sickle cell syndromes. However, a larger proportion of patients with genotype HP 2-2 are associated with hematological profile disorders, inflammation, and dysregulation of iron metabolism. Then, the haptoglobin polymorphism contributes to the severity of major sickle cell syndromes.

Magnetic activated carbon from spent coffee grounds: iron-catalyzed CO2 activation mechanism and adsorption of antibiotic lomefloxacin from aqueous medium

The facile fabrication of low-cost adsorbents possessing high removal efficiency and convenient separation property is an urgent need for water treatment. Herein, magnetic activated carbon was synthesized from spent coffee grounds (SCG) by Fe-catalyzed CO2 activation at 800 °C for 90 min, and magnetization and pore formation were simultaneously achieved during heat treatment. The sample was characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, VSM, SEM, and FTIR. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted using lomefloxacin (LMO) as the probing pollutant. Preparation mechanism was revealed by TG-FTIR and XRD. Experimental results showed that Fe3O4 derived from Fe species can be reduced to Fe by carbon at high temperatures, followed by subsequent reoxidation to Fe3O4 by CO2, and the redox cycle between Fe and Fe3O4 favored the formation of pores. The promotion effects of Fe species on CO2 activation can be quantitatively reflected by the yield of CO as the signature gaseous product, and the suitable activation temperate range was determined to be 675 to 985 °C. The BET surface area, total pore volume, and saturated magnetization value of the product were 586 m2 g-1, 0.327 cm3 g-1, and 11.59 emu g-1, respectively. The Langmuir model was applicable for the adsorption isotherm data for LMO with the maximum adsorption capacity of 95 mg g-1, and thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. This study demonstrated that Fe-catalyzed CO2 activation was an effective method of converting SCG into magnetic separable adsorbent for LMO removal from aqueous medium.

Increased Brain Iron Deposition in Episodic Migraine: A Pilot Voxel-based Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping

INTRODUCTION

Although iron deposition has been identified as a significant migraine trigger, the key structures in episodic migraine (EM) remain unknown.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study is to investigate cerebral iron deposition in EM using an advanced voxel-based quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM).

METHODS

A multi-echo gradient echo sequence MR was performed in 15 episodic migraine patients (EMs) and 27 normal control subjects (NCs). The reconstructed quantitative susceptibility mapping images and voxel-based analysis were performed over the entire brain. The susceptibility value of all brain regions with altered iron deposition was extracted, and the correlations between susceptibility value and clinical variables (including HAMA, HAMD, MoCA, VAS, MIDAS score, diseased duration, and headache frequency) were calculated.

RESULTS

EM patients presented increased susceptibility value in the left putamen and bilateral substantia nigra (SN) compared with NC. There was no correlation between susceptibility value and the clinical variables.

CONCLUSION

Increased brain iron deposition in the extrapyramidal system may be a biomarker for migraine, and abnormal iron metabolism may be involved in the extrapyramidal mechanism. The QSM technique would be an optimal and simple tool for clinical practice and research in iron measurement.

Magnetic iron-based nanoparticles biogeochemical behavior in soil-plant system: A critical review

Increasing attention is being given to magnetic iron-based nanoparticles (MINPs) because of their potential environmental benefits. Owing to the earth abundance and high utilization of MINPs, as well as the significant functions of Fe in sustainable agriculture and environmental remediation, an understanding of the environmental fate of MINPs is indispensable. However, there are still knowledge gaps regarding the largely unknown environmental behaviors and fate of MINPs in soil-plant system. Thus, this review summarizes recent literature on the biogeochemical behavior (uptake, transportation, and transformation) of MINPs in soil and plants. The different possible uptake (e.g., foliar and root adsorption) and translocation (e.g., xylem, phloem, symplastic/apoplastic pathway, and endocytosis) pathways are discussed. Furthermore, drivers of MINPs uptake and transportation (e.g., soil characteristics, fertilizer treatments, copresence of inorganic and organic anions, meteorological conditions, and cell wall pores) in both soil and plant environments are summarized. This review also details the physical, chemical, and biological transformations of MINPs in soil-plant system. More importantly, a metadata analysis from the existing literature was employed to investigate the distinction between MINPs and other engineering nanoparticles biogeochemical behavior. In the future, more attention should be given to understanding the behavior of MINPs in soil-plant system and improving the capabilities of predictive models. This review thus highlights the main knowledge gaps regarding MINPs behavior and fate to provide guidance for their safe application in agrochemicals, crop production, and soil health.

Causal associations between liver traits and Colorectal cancer: a Mendelian randomization study

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate the causal associations between several liver traits (liver iron content, percent liver fat, alanine transaminase levels, and liver volume) and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk using a Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to improve our understanding of the disease and its management.

METHODS

Genetic variants were used as instrumental variables, extracted from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) datasets of liver traits and CRC. The Two-Sample MR package in R was used to conduct inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR Egger, Maximum likelihood, Weighted median, and Inverse variance weighted (multiplicative random effects) MR approaches to generate overall estimates of the effect. MR analysis was conducted with Benjamini-Hochberg method-corrected P values to account for multiple testing (P < 0.013). MR-PRESSO was used to identify and remove outlier genetic variants in Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. The MR Steiger test was used to assess the validity of the assumption that exposure causes outcomes. Leave-one-out validation, pleiotropy, and heterogeneity testing were also conducted to ensure the reliability of the results. Multivariable MR was utilized for validation of our findings using the IVW method while also adjusting for potential confounding or pleiotropy bias.

RESULTS

The MR analysis suggested a causal effect between liver volume and a reduced risk of CRC (OR 0.60; 95% CI, 0.44-0.82; P = 0.0010) but did not provide evidence for causal effects of liver iron content, percent liver fat, or liver alanine transaminase levels. The MR-PRESSO method did not identify any outliers, and the MR Steiger test confirmed that the causal direction of the analysis results was correct in the Mendelian randomization analysis. MR results were consistent with heterogeneity and pleiotropy analyses, and leave-one-out analysis demonstrated the overall values obtained were consistent with estimates obtained when all available SNPs were included in the analysis. Multivariable MR was utilized for validation of our findings using the IVW method while also adjusting for potential confounding or pleiotropy bias.

CONCLUSION

The study provides tentative evidence for a causal role of liver volume in CRC, while genetically predicted levels of liver iron content, percent liver fat, and liver alanine transaminase levels were not associated with CRC risk. The findings may inform the development of targeted therapeutic interventions for colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) patients, and the study highlights the importance of MR as a powerful epidemiological tool for investigating causal associations between exposures and outcomes.

Determination of the Concentration of Heavy Metals in Artisanal Cheeses Produced in the Mexican States of Tabasco and Chiapas

Cheese consumption provides humans with minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and vitamins. In Mexico, several cheese varieties are produced, each with its texture, scent, and flavor. The artisanal cheeses made in the states of Tabasco and Chiapas-including, among others, the varieties named crema (cream), doble crema (double cream), oaxaca, panela, fresco, bola, poro, cotija, and asadero-have a high demand in the domestic and foreign markets. The intensification of anthropic activity in these states causes an increased emission to the environment of contaminants like heavy metals, which could reach human foodstuffs through the food chains. In particular, heavy metal contents in cheeses consumed daily by these states' local populations might represent a public health risk. Because of that, our objectives in this work were to determine the concentrations of lead, cadmium, nickel, copper, zinc, and iron in artisanal cheeses produced in the states of Tabasco and Chiapas and to determine the values of the hazard quotient (HQ), total hazard quotient (THQ), and cancer risk total (CRT) for adult and young men and women. The results of our analyses of cheese samples from the states of Tabasco and Chiapas showed that the average concentrations (mg kg-1) of cadmium (0.0023 ± 0.002, 0.0023 ± 0.002 mg kg-1, respectively, for each state), lead (0.0047 ± 0.00, 0.0051 ± 0.002), nickel (0.0039 ± 0.0046, 0.0031 ± 0.0039), copper (0.0199 ± 0.021, 0.0202 ± 0.022), zinc (0.1611 ± 0.18, 0.194 ± 0.21), and iron (61.84 ± 4.23, 65.76 ± 6.61 mg kg-1), the first three values lower than the limits established by the FAO/WHO and Codex Alimentarius. The value of THQ that we obtained was less than one, and that of CRT was within the limits established by the US-EPA, which means that the consumption of artisanal cheeses from Tabasco and Chiapas by humans does not imply a risk of disease or cancer.

Mitigation of arsenic accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings by oxygen nanobubbles in hydroponic cultures

Arsenic (As) is a toxic non-essential metal. Its accumulation in rice has not only seriously affected the growth of rice, but also poses a significant threat to human health. Many reports have been published to decrease the arsenic accumulation in the rice plant by various additives such as chemicals, fertilizers, adsorbents, microorganisms and analyzing the mechanism. Nanobubble is a new technology widely used in agriculture because of its long existence time and high mass transfer efficiency. However, a few studies have investigated the effect of nanobubbles on arsenic uptake in rice. This study investigated the effect of oxygen nanobubbles on the growth and uptake of As in rice. The oxygen nanobubbles could rupture the salinity of nutrients and produce the hydroxyl radical. The hydroxyl radical caused the oxidation of arsenic As(III) to As (V) and the oxidation of ferrous ions. At the same time, the oxidized iron adsorbing As (V) created the iron plaque on the rice roots to stop arsenic introduction into the rice plant. The results indicated that the treatment of oxygen nanobubbles increased rice biomass under As stress, while they increased the chlorophyll content and promoted plant photosynthesis. Oxygen nanobubbles reduced the As content in rice roots to 12.5% and shoots to 46.4%. In other words, it significantly decreased As accumulation in rice. Overall, oxygen nanobubbles mitigated the toxic effects of arsenic on rice and had the potential to reduce the accumulation of arsenic in rice.

Immobilization of zinc and cadmium by biochar-based sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron in a co-contaminated soil: Performance, mechanism, and microbial response

Mining and smelting of mineral resources causes excessive accumulation of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in surrounding soils. Here, biochar-based sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (SNZVI/BC) was designed via a one-step liquid phase reduction method to immobilize cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in a copolluted arable soil. A 60 d soil incubation experiment revealed that Cd and Zn immobilization efficiency by 6 % SNZVI/BC (25.2-26.2 %) was higher than those by individual SNZVI (13.9-18.0 %) or biochar (14.0-19.3 %) based on the changes in diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable PTM concentrations in soils, exhibiting a synergistic effect. Cd2+ or Zn2+ replaced isomorphously Fe2+ in amorphous ferrous sulfide, as revealed by XRD, XPS, and high-resolution TEM-EDS, forming metal sulfide precipitates and thus immobilizing PTMs. PTM immobilization was further enhanced by adsorption by biochar and oxidation products (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) of SNZVI via precipitation and surface complexation. SNZVI/BC also increased the concentration of dissolved organic carbon and soil pH, thus stimulating the abundances of beneficial bacteria, i.e., Bacilli, Clostridia, and Desulfuromonadia. These functional bacteria further facilitated microbial Fe(III) reduction, production of ammonium and available potassium, and immobilization of PTMs in soils. The predicted function of the soil microbial community was improved after supplementation with SNZVI/BC. Overall, SNZVI/BC could be a promising functional material that not only immobilized PTMs but also enhanced available nutrients in cocontaminated soils.

Impact of dust deposition on the growth of marine autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms: Evidence from the South China Sea

Aeolian dust can provide nutrients for the ocean and affect the growth of phytoplankton. However, the impacts of dust deposition on autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms have rarely been studied. In this study, we conducted two microcosm experiments in the low-nutrient and low-chlorophyll environment of the South China Sea and found that dust did not stimulate the abundance of autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms. Our results show that dust contains most of the unreacted iron-bearing minerals, and thus provides limited bioavailable iron and nitrogen for bacterioplankton and phytoplankton growth. These results elucidate the overlooked impacts of the properties of the iron-bearing minerals in aeolian dust on microbial communities, which may play an important role in marine ecosystems and climate change.

CO2 emission accounting and emission reduction analysis of the steel production process based on the material-energy-carbon correlation effect

This paper develops a process-level carbon emission calculation model for iron and steel enterprises through the carbon emission mechanism of the whole production process. The relationship between material, energy and carbon flows is considered and combined. The carbon emissions of enterprises are divided into industrial emissions and combustion emissions, and the indirect emissions of purchased intermediate products and electricity purchased from the grid are also considered. Carbon emission targets and corresponding emission reduction strategies are formulated at the enterprise and process levels. For example, consider an iron and steel enterprise. The different types of carbon emissions are accounted for, with their reduction potential analysed based on the carbon material flow analysis method. The results show that the carbon emission of this enterprise is 1930.87 kgCO2/t (CS), and the combustion emission caused by energy flow is the main contributor to the enterprise's carbon emission, accounting for 57.02% of the total emission. The carbon emission during iron-making accounts for 69.06% of the entire process and is critical in any carbon emission reduction of the enterprise. Among them, process emissions from the blast furnace process account for 81.79% of industrial emissions of the whole process, which is 356.51 kgCO2/t (CS), and is the main challenge of low carbon transformation in this extensive process. This study highlights that increasing the integrated steel-making scrap ratio and electric furnace steel production can break through the existing emission reduction limits. A 65.02% carbon emission reduction can be achieved, and using green electricity can reduce emissions by 24.15%. Reasonably determining the amount of purchased coke and paying attention to the high-value recycling of byproduct gas resources in the plant are essential to achieve low-carbon economic development of steel.

Coupling electrokinetic remediation with flushing using green tea synthesized nano zero-valent iron/nickel to remediate Cr (VI)

This study focuses on a flushing-electrokinetic remediation technology of hexavalent chromium from the chromium slag dump site. A suspension of nanoscale zero-valent iron/nickel fabricated from green tea (GT-nZVI/Ni), was employed as an eluent to degrade Cr (VI) and enhance the remediation effectiveness of a single EK. The removal efficiency of Cr (VI) was compared under different voltages, electrode spacings and pH values of the anolyte. The results demonstrated that the combined flushing and EK achieved a removal rate of Cr (VI) in the soil throughout all the experiments ranging from 83.08 to 96.97% after 120 h. The optimal result was obtained when the voltage was 28 V, the pH value of anolyte was 3 and the electrode spacing was 15 cm. The removal of Cr (VI) reached 91.49% and the energy consumption was 0.32606 kW·h·g-1. The underlying mechanisms responsible for the removal of Cr (VI) by GT-nZVI/Ni flushing-EK primarily involved electromigration, reduction and adsorption co-precipitation processes. The fractionation analysis of Cr (VI) concentration in the soil after remediation showed that the presence of GT-nZVI/Ni facilitated the conversion of Cr (VI) into oxidizable and residual states with low mobility and toxicity. The results of toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) indicated that the leaching concentration of Cr (VI) was below 1 mg·L-1, complying with the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, the phytotoxicity testing revealed that the germination index (GI) of the remediated soil reached 54.75%, indicating no potential harm to plants.
