Silica/Annona muricata nano-hybrid: Synthesis and anticancer activity against breast cancer

Biogenically derived silica nanoparticles may serve as a well-defined target vehicle for drug delivery and have a wide range of applications in biomedicine. Silica nanoparticles are an excellent candidate as drug carriers due to their mesoporous structure, high drug loading capacity, low toxicity, environmental friendliness and low economic synthesis procedures. In this study, nano structured silica was extracted from sugarcane bagasse through an alkali leaching extraction and conjugated with A. muricata extract overcoming its poor solubility and improving its bioavailability within the host system. The Silica Nanoparticles (SNP) and Annona muricata conjugated Silica Nanoparticles (AM/SNP) were characterized using SEM, FTIR, TGA, EDAX, XRD and zeta potential. The AM/SNP was subjected to kinetic release studies and exhibited a sustained release of 64 % over the course of 12 h in contrast to extract, indicating the slow release of the drug under synthetic conditions. A. muricata pose a high affinity against tumor cells as an anti-cancer agent, and the potential of binding was testified using in-silico virtual screening against breast cancer receptors with lead acetogenins with Annomuricin (-7.4 kcal/mol) and Gigantecin (-7.4 kcal/mol) exhibiting a high binding affinity against ER and HER2+ receptors respectively. The AM/SNP conjugate exhibited high cytotoxicity against the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line with an IC50 value of 33.43 μg, indicating high potency of the conjugate at low concentrations, facilitating low systemic toxicity on administration.

A review on green approaches utilizing phytochemicals in the synthesis of vanadium nano particles and their applications

In the modern era, inorganic nanoparticles have received profound attention as they possess boundless applications in various fields. Among these, vanadium-based nanoparticles (VNPs) are highly remarkable due to their inherent physiological and biological properties with many therapeutic and other applications, such as drug delivery systems for diseases like cancer, environmental remediation, energy storage, energy conversion, and photocatalysis. Moreover, physically, and chemically synthesized VNPs are very versatile, however, these synthesis routes cause concern to health and the environment due to the highly savage reaction conditions, using highly toxic and harsh chemicals, which compel the researchers to develop an eco-friendly, greener, and sustainable route for synthesis. In this outlook, to avoid the innumerable limitations, a bio approach is used over chemical and physical methods. This present review emphasis on the role of various biological components in the synthesis, especially Phyto-molecules that acts as capping and reducing agent, and solvent system for the nanoparticles synthesis. Furthermore, the influence of various factors on the biogenic synthesized nanoparticles has also been discussed. Finally, potential applications of as-synthesized VNPs, principally as an antimicrobial agent and their role as a nanomedicine, energy applications as a supercapacitor, and photocatalytic agents, have been discussed.

Enhancing tomato plant growth in a saline environment through the eco-friendly synthesis and optimization of nanoparticles derived from halophytic sources

Using green synthesis methods to produce halophytic nanoparticles presents a promising and cost-effective approach for enhancing plant growth in saline environments, offering agricultural resilience as an alternative to traditional chemical methods. This study focuses on synthesizing zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles derived from the halophyte Withania somnifera, showcasing their potential in ameliorating tomato growth under salinity stress. The biosynthesis of ZnO nanoparticles was initially optimized (i.e., salt concentration, the amount of plant extract, pH, and temperature) using a central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM) together with UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) to comprehensively characterize the biosynthesized ZnO NPs. The central composite design (CCD) based response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the biosynthesis of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) by adjusting salt concentration, plant extract, pH, and temperature. The ZnO NPs were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). FT-IR showed an absorption peak of ZnO between 400 and 600 cm-1, while SEM showed irregular shapes ranging between 1.3 and 6 nm. The data of EDX showed the presence of Zn (77.52%) and O (22.48%) levels, which exhibited the high purity synthesized ZnO under saline conditions. Introducing ZnO nanoparticles to tomato plants resulted in a remarkable 2.3-fold increase in shoot length in T23 (100 mg/L ZnO nanoparticles + 50 mM NaCl). There was an observable increase in foliage at T2 (20 mg L-1 ZnO) and T23 (100 mg L-1 ZnO-NPs + 50 mM NaCl). Tomato plants treated with T2 (20 mg L-1 ZnO) and T23 (100 mg L-1 ZnO-NPs + 50 mM NaCl) improved root elongation compared to the control plant group. Both fresh and dry leaf masses were significantly improved in T1 (10 mg L-1 ZnO) by 7.1-fold and T12 (10 mg L-1 ZnO-NPs + 100 mM NaCl) by 0.8-fold. The concentration of Zn was higher in T12 (10 mg L-1 ZnO NPs + 100 mM NaCl) among all treatments. Our findings prove that utilizing ZnO nanoparticles under saline conditions effectively promotes tomato plants' growth, thereby mitigating the negative impacts of salt stress.

Biogenic preparation of copper oxide nanoparticles using table olive: Catalytic reduction, cytotoxicity, and burn wound healing activities

Green strategy for the preparation of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using table olive has been researched in the present work. Some characterization assays viz., transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) was used for evaluation of the crystal structure, size and morphology of the manufactured NPs. As a catalyst, the prepared material demonstrated remarkable catalytic capability (>99% in 4 min) for the reduction of rhodamine B using sodium borohydride. In addition, the treated cells with the CuO NPs were examined by regarding the cytotoxicity properties on normal (HUVEC) cell line. The results showed that the prepared CuO NPs did not have any cytotoxicity effects on HUVEC (up to 500 μg/mL). Furthermore, in vivo experiments on burn wounds in rats show that the synthesized CuO NPs ointment significantly diminished (p ≤ 0.01) the wound area. On the other hand, the wound contracture factor was increased in comparison with the control groups. Collectively, the CuO NPs prepared by biological method have potential applications in organic pollutants reduction and wound care applications. In this viewpoint, CuO NPs may be considered as an effective for treatment of different wounds including burn wounds or injuries from surgeries such as plastic surgery.

Current scenario on biogenic synthesis of metal oxide nanocomposites using plant specimens and their application towards treatment of wastewater

Various industries such as textile, leather, and paper mills discharge huge amount of industrial effluents to the environment containing unconsumed dyes and toxic heavy metal ions which are very harmful and carcinogenic in nature. The increase in water pollution is adversely impacting the ecosystems and human health. Now, it has become a great challenge to treat the contaminated water/wastewater. Photocatalysis and adsorption are the two techniques gaining significant attention for the removal of toxic pollutants from wastewater effectively. In this regard, metal oxide-based nanomaterials and their composites have gained profound attention in photocatalytic degradation as well as adsorptive removal of toxic pollutants from water due to their chemical reactivity, higher surface area, regeneration efficiency, ample adsorption sites, intriguing photocatalytic activity, and cost-effectiveness. However, the conventional methods, employed to synthesize these metal oxide nanocomposites, involve the use of toxic chemicals which again produce secondary pollutants. Among all biological materials, the use of plant biomolecules is found to be the most effective way to synthesize stable nanomaterials, as the phytoconstituents of plants act as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent. It is experimentally proved that bio-based nanocomposites have tremendous potential towards the degradation of environmental pollutants. Thus, there is a great need to work on the synthesis of some novel plant-based metal oxide nanocomposites and their applications in the field of water treatment. This review mainly discusses the metal oxide nanocomposites synthesized using plant specimens and their various applications towards treatment of water/wastewater.

Cymodocea serrulata-capped silver nanoparticles for battling human lung cancer, breast cancer, hepatic cancer: Optimization by full factorial design and in vitro cytotoxicity evaluation

In recent times, there has been growing interest in nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized through biological means due to their ease of production and their potential applications in the field of biology. This study presents an environmentally friendly method for the biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the leaf extract of Cymodocea serrulata as both a reducing agent and a capping agent. Various physico-chemical and microscopic techniques were employed to comprehensively characterize the biogenically produced AgNPs. The results of these characterization studies confirmed the formation of spherical, stable, and crystalline AgNPs with an average size of 30.5 ± 2.5 nm. Furthermore, the antibacterial assessment revealed the remarkable antibacterial properties of these biogenically synthesized Ag NPs, even at exceedingly low concentrations ranging from 50 to 100 μg/mL. The IC50 values for the biogenically synthesized AgNPs against different human cancer cell lines, such as A549, MDA-MB-231, HepG2, and MCF-7, were determined to be 93.4 ± 4.5, 82.5 ± 3.7, 87.6 ± 4.1, and 57.3 ± 2.5 μg/mL, respectively. Most notably, the biogenically synthesized Ag NPs exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity, as evidenced by their IC50 value of 30.08 ± 1.4 μg/mL, as assessed through the HRBC membrane stabilization method. These in vitro findings strongly suggest that AgNPs fabricated through biogenic processes using Cymodocea serrulata leaf extract hold promise as potential therapeutic candidates for combating bacterial infections, cancer, and inflammatory conditions.

Zero-Valent Iron Nanoparticles: Biogenic Synthesis and their Medical Applications; Existing Challenges and Future Prospects

OBJECTIVE

In the last decade, nanobiotechnology is emerging as a keen prudence area owing to its widespread applications in the medical field. In this context, zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) have garnered tremendous attention attributed to their cheap, non-toxic, excellent paramagnetic nature, extremely reactive surface, and dual oxidation state that makes them excellent antioxidants and free-radical scavengers. Facile biogenic synthesis, in which a biological source is used as a template for the synthesis of NPs, is presumably dominant among other physical and chemical synthetic procedures. The purpose of this review is to elucidate plant-mediated synthesis of nZVI, although they have been successfully fabricated by microbes and other biological entities (such as starch, chitosan, alginate, cashew nut shell, etc.) as well.

METHODS

The methodology of the study involved keyword searches of electronic databases, including ScienceDirect, NCBI, and Google Scholar (2008-2023). Search terms of the review included 'biogenic synthesis of nZVI', 'plant-mediated synthesis of nZVI', 'medical applications of nZVI', and 'Recent advancements and future prospects of nZVI'.

RESULTS

Various articles were identified and reviewed for biogenic fabrication of stable nZVI with the vast majority of studies reporting positive findings. The resultant nanomaterial found great interest for biomedical purposes such as their use as biocompatible anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and albumin binding agents that have not been adequately accessed in previous studies.

CONCLUSION

This review shows that there are potential cost savings applications to be made when using biogenic nZVI for medical purposes. However, the encountering challenges concluded later, along with the prospects for sustainable future development.

Characterization and cytotoxicity assessment of cadmium sulfide quantum dots synthesized with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici

The potential of CdS quantum dots for biomedical and bioimaging applications depends on their cytotoxicity, which can be modulated by coating molecules. Using sulfur as a precursor can be used along with cadmium nitrate to synthesize CdS quantum dots with the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. The latter replaces pure chemical sulfur as a precursor for CdS quantum dot synthesis, thus transforming waste into a value-added product, increasing sustainability, reducing the environmental impact of the process through the implementation of green synthesis techniques, and contributing to the circular economy. Therefore, we compared the cytotoxicity on HT-29 cells of biogenic, and chemical CdSQDs, synthesized by a chemical method using pure sulfur. Biogenic and chemical CdSQDs had diameters of 4.08 ± 0.07 nm and 3.2 ± 0.20 nm, Cd/S molar ratio of 43.1 and 1.1, Z-potential of - 14.77 ± 0.64 mV and - 5.52 ± 1.11 mV, and hydrodynamic diameters of 193.94 ± 3.71 nm and 152.23 ± 2.31 nm, respectively. The cell viability improved 1.61 times for biogenic CdSQDs over chemical CdSQDs, while cytotoxicity, measured as IC50, diminished 1.88-times. The lower cytotoxicity of biogenic CdSQDs was attributed to their organic coating consisting of lipids, amino acids, proteins, and nitrate groups that interacted with CdS through -OH and -SH groups. Therefore, the biogenic synthesis of CdSQDs has repurposed a pathogenic fungus, taking advantage of the biomolecules it secretes, to transform hazardous sulfur waste and metal ions into stable CdSQDs with advantageous structural and cytotoxic properties for their potential application in biomedicine and bioimaging.

Biogenic Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles and Their Biomedical Applications: A Review

Nanotechnology has inscribed novel perception into the material science and one of the most extensively used nanomaterials is Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) with healthcare and biomedical applications. Because of its outstanding biocompatibility, low toxicity, and low cost, ZnO NPs have become one of the most prominent metal oxide NPs in biological applications. This review highlights the different aspects of ZnO NPs, like their green synthesis as a substitute of conventional route due to avoidance of threat of hazardous, costly precursors and subsequent mostly therapeutic applications. Due to their wide bandwidth and high excitation binding energy, ZnO NPs have undergone extensive research. In addition to their potential applications as antibiotics, antioxidants, anti-diabetics, and cytotoxic agents, ZnO NPs also hold a promising future as an antiviral treatment for SARS-CoV-2. Zn has antiviral properties and may be effective against a variety of respiratory virus species, particularly SARS-CoV-2. This review includes a variety of topics, including the virus's structural properties, an overview of infection mechanism, and current COVID-19 treatments. Nanotechnology-based techniques for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19 are also discussed in this review.

Biogenic synthesis, molecular docking, biomedical and environmental applications of multifunctional CuO nanoparticles mediated Phragmites australis

The demand for metal nanoparticles is increasing with the widening application areas while causing environmental impact including pollution, toxic byproduct generation and depletion of natural resources. Incorporating natural materials in nanoparticle synthesis can contribute toward environmental sustainability. This paper is concerned with the biogenic synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) mediated by the plant species Phragmites australis. UV-vis, FT-IR, TEM and SEM studies were used to characterize the obtained CuONPs. The synthesized nanoparticles' antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was assessed. The CuONPs' reducing power, total phenolic component content, and flavonoid content were all calculated. Additionally, the dye removal abilities of copper oxide nanoparticles using Brilliant Blue R-250 were studied. The CuONP synthesis was assessed morphological by change of color and in the UV-vis analysis by the SPR band around 320 and 360 nm. FT-IR was used to monitor the functional groups present in the synthesized CuONPs. The obtained CuONPs were spherical and between 70 and 142 nm in size, according to the SEM data and TEM analyses were in accordance with SEM results. Using disk diffusion, the CuONPs demonstrated substantial antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus and E. coli, with inhibition zones of 18.5 ± 0.8 and 12.7 ± 0.6 mm, respectively. The MBC and MIC values were 62.5 μg/mL against S. aureus and 125 μg/mL against E. coli. The antioxidant abilities of P. australis and CuONPs were also confirmed. The CuONP solution's total phenolic substance content was 9.44 μg of pyrocathecol equivalent per milligram of nanoparticle, and its total flavonoid content was 16.24 μg of catechin equivalent per milligram of nanoparticle. Additionally, the synthesized CuONPs were found to be well effective on industrial dye removal by demonstrating high decolorization of 98 %. Also, the antibacterial activity of CuONPs was investigated through the interactions with S. aureus FtsZ, dihydropteroate synthase and thymidylate kinase. In silico molecular docking analysis was applied in the confirmation of the binding sites and interactions of active sites. CuONP showed -9.067, -8,048, and -7.349 kcal/mol of binding energies in molecular docking analysis of FtsZ, dihydropteroate synthase and thymidylate kinase proteins respectively. The results of this study suggested the antimicrobial, antioxidant and decolorative effect of synthesized CuONPs that can be apply in multiple areas of R&D and industry.

Biogenic synthesis of reduced graphene oxide from Ziziphus spina-christi (Christ's thorn jujube) extracts for catalytic, antimicrobial, and antioxidant potentialities

In the current work, various concentrations of the aqueous extract of Ziziphus spina-christi were employed for the phytoreduction of graphene oxide (GO). The green synthesized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was characterized through UV-Vis spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) denoted the presence of numerous phytoconstituents including ketones, terpenoids, fatty acids, esters, and flavonoids, which acted as reducing and capping agents. The obtained results indicated the increase in rGO yield and shape with increasing the extract concentration. The optimized rGO was instantaneously ~100% removed methylene blue (MB) from the water at 5 mg L^-1. However, the removal efficiency was slightly declined to reach 73.55 and 65.1% at 10 and 15 mg L^-1, respectively. A powerful antibacterial activity for rGO particularly against gram-negative bacteria with a high concentration of 2 × 10⁸ CFU mL^-1 was confirmed. Furthermore, rGO demonstrated promising and comparable antioxidant efficiency with vitamin C against DPPH free radical scavenging. While vitamin C recorded 13.45 and 48.4%, the optimized rGO attained 13.30 and 45.20% at 12 and 50 μg mL^-1, respectively.

Photosynthetic microbes in nanobiotechnology: Applications and perspectives

Photosynthetic microbes like brown algae, red algae, green-algae and blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are utilized extensively for various commercial and industrial purposes. However, in recent time, their application has shifted to nanotechnology. The synthesis of metal nanoparticles using algal resources is known as Phyconanotechnology. Due to various advantages of the photosynthetic microbes such as presence of bioactive molecules, scalability, high metal uptake and cultivability, these microbes form ideal sources for nanoparticle synthesis. The green synthesis of nanoparticles is a non-toxic and environment-friendly alternative compared to other hazardous chemical and physical routes of synthesis. Several species of algae are explored for the fabrication of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. Various physical characterization techniques collectively contribute in defining the surface morphology of nanoparticles and the existing functional groups for bioreduction and stability. A wide range of nanostructured metals like gold, silver, copper, zinc, iron, platinum and palladium are fabricated using algae and cyanobacteria. Due to the unique properties of the phycogenic nanoparticles, biocompatibility and safety aspects, all of these metal nanoparticles have their applications in facets like infection control, diagnosis, drug delivery, biosensing and bioremediation. Herein, the uniqueness of the phycogenic nanoparticles along with their distinctive antibacterial, antifungal, antibiofilm, algaecidal, antiviral, anticancer, antioxidant, antidiabetic, dye degradation, metal removal and catalytic properties are featured. Lastly, this work highlights the various challenges and future perspectives for further exploration of the biogenic metal nanoparticles for development of nanomedicine and environmental remediation in the coming years.

Biogenic enabled in-vitro synthesis of nickel cobaltite nanoparticle and its application in single stage hybrid biohydrogen production

In biomass to biofuels production technology enzyme plays a key role. Nevertheless, the high production cost of cellulase enzyme is one of the critical issues in the economical production of biofuels. Nowadays, implementation of nanomaterials as catalyst is emerging as an innovative approach for the production of sustainable energy. In this context, synthesis of nickel cobaltite nanoparticles (NiCo₂O₄ NPs) via in vitro route has been conducted using fungus Emericella variecolor NS3 meanwhile; its impact has been evaluated on improved thermal and pH stability of crude cellulase enzyme obtained from Emericella variecolor NS3. Additionally, bioconversion of alkali treated rice straw using NiCo₂O₄ NPs stabilized cellulase produced sugar hydrolyzate which is further used for H₂ production via hybrid fermentation. Total 51.7 g/L sugar hydrolyzate produced 2978 mL/L cumulative H₂ production after 336 h along with maximum rate 34.12 mL/L/h in 24 h using Bacillus subtilis PF_1 and Rhodobacter sp. employed for dark and photo-fermentation, respectively.

Biogenic Synthesis, Characterization and Antibacterial Potential Evaluation of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Against Escherichia coli

The development of resistance against antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections along with the prevalence of medication residues presents significant public health problems globally. Antibiotic-resistant germs result in infections that are difficult or impossible to treat. Decreasing antibiotic effectiveness calls for rapid development of alternative antimicrobials. In this respect, nanoparticles (NPs) of copper oxide (CuO) manifest a latent and flexible inorganic nanostructure with noteworthy antimicrobial impact. Green synthesis of CuO NPs was performed in the current study, which was then doped with varying amounts of ginger (Zingiber officinale, ZO) and garlic (Allium sativum, AS) extracts. In low and high doses, the synthesized compound was used to measure the antimicrobial effectiveness against pathogenic Escherichia coli. The present research successfully demonstrated a renewable, eco-friendly synthesis technique with natural materials that is equally applicable to other green metal oxide NPs.

Zinc oxide and zinc oxide-based nanostructures: biogenic and phytogenic synthesis, properties and applications

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are considered as very significant and essential material due to its multifunctional properties, stability, low cost and wide usage. Many green and biogenic approaches for ZnO NPs synthesis have been reported using various sources such as plants and microorganisms. Plants contain biomolecules that can act as capping, oxidizing and reducing agents that increase the rate of reaction and stabilizes the NPs. This review emphasizes and compiles different types of plants and parts of plant used for the synthesis of ZnO and its potential applications at one place. The influence of biogenic and phytogenic synthesized ZnO on its properties and possible mechanisms for its fabrication has been discussed. This review also highlights the potential applications and future prospects of phytogenic synthesized ZnO in the field of energy production and storage, sun light harvesting, environmental remediation, and biological applications.

Influence of the capping of biogenic silver nanoparticles on their toxicity and mechanism of action towards Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

BACKGROUND

Biogenic nanoparticles possess a capping of biomolecules derived from the organism employed in the synthesis, which contributes to their stability and biological activity. These nanoparticles have been highlighted for the control of phytopathogens, so there is a need to understand their composition, mechanisms of action, and toxicity. This study aimed to investigate the importance of the capping and compare the effects of capped and uncapped biogenic silver nanoparticles synthesized using the filtrate of Trichoderma harzianum against the phytopathogenic fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Capping removal, investigation of the composition of the capping and physico-chemical characterization of the capped and uncapped nanoparticles were performed. The effects of the nanoparticles on S. sclerotiorum were evaluated in vitro. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the nanoparticles on different cell lines and its effects on nontarget microorganisms were also investigated.

RESULTS

The capped and uncapped nanoparticles showed spherical morphology, with greater diameter of the uncapped ones. Functional groups of biomolecules, protein bands and the hydrolytic enzymes NAGase, β-1,3-glucanase, chitinase and acid protease from T. harzianum were detected in the capping. The capped nanoparticles showed great inhibitory potential against S. sclerotiorum, while the uncapped nanoparticles were ineffective. There was no difference in cytotoxicity comparing capped and uncapped nanoparticles, however higher genotoxicity of the uncapped nanoparticles was observed towards the cell lines. Regarding the effects on nontarget microorganisms, in the minimal inhibitory concentration assay only the capped nanoparticles inhibited microorganisms of agricultural importance, while in the molecular analysis of the soil microbiota there were major changes in the soils exposed to the uncapped nanoparticles.

CONCLUSIONS

The results suggest that the capping played an important role in controlling nanoparticle size and contributed to the biological activity of the nanoparticles against S. sclerotiorum. This study opens perspectives for investigations concerning the application of these nanoparticles for the control of phytopathogens.

Biogenic Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles with High Antimicrobial and Catalytic Activities using Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia glutinosa)

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely sought after for a variety of biomedical and environmental applications due to their antimicrobial and catalytic properties. We present here a green and simple synthesis of AgNPs utilizing traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. The screening of 20 aqueous herb extracts shows that Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia glutinosa) had the most promising potential in producing AgNPs of 30±6 nm, with narrow size distribution and high crystallinity. The antimicrobial activities of these AgNPs conducted on E. coli cells were found to be superior in comparison to poly(vinylpyrrolidone)-capped AgNPs synthesized using common chemical method. Additionally, the AgNPs obtained possess excellent catalytic performance in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. We compared the phytochemical and FTIR spectral analyses of the herb extract before and after synthesis, in order to elucidate the phytochemicals responsible for the reduction of Ag⁺ ions and the capping of the AgNPs produced.

Biological synthesis of iron nanoparticles using hydrolysates from a waste-based biorefinery

The purpose of this work was to produce iron nanoparticles (Fe-NP) by microbial pathway from anaerobic bacteria grown in anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AnFBRs) that constitute a new stage of a waste-based biorefinery. Bioparticles from biological fluidized bed reactors from a biorefinery of organic fraction of municipal solid wastes (that produces hydrolysates rich in reducing sugars) were nanodecorated (embedded nanobioparticle or nanodecorated bioparticle, ENBP) by biological reduction of iron salts. Factors "origin of bioparticles" (either from hydrogenogenic or methanogenic fluidized bed reactor) and "type of iron precursor salt" (iron chloride or iron citrate) were explored. SEM and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) showed amorphous distribution of nanoparticles (NP) on the bioparticles surface, although small structures that are nanoparticle-like could be seen in the SEM micrographs. Some agglomeration of NPs was confirmed by DLS. Average NP size was lower in general for NP in ENBP-M than ENBP-H according to HRTEM. The factors did not have a significant influence on the specific surface area of NPs, which was high and in the range 490 to 650 m² g^-1. Analysis by EDS displayed consistent iron concentration 60-65% iron in nanoparticles present in ENBP-M (bioparticles previously grown in methanogenic bioreactor), whereas the iron concentration in NPs present in ENBP-H (bioparticles previously grown in hydrogenogenic bioreactor) was more variable in a range from 8.5 to 62%, depending on the iron salt. X-ray diffraction patterns showed the typical peaks for magnetite at 35° (3 1 1), 43° (4 0 0), and 62° (4 0 0); moreover, siderite diffraction pattern was found at 26° (0 1 2), 38° (1 1 0), and 42° (1 1 3). Results of infrared analysis of ENBP in our work were congruent with presence of magnetite and occasionally siderite determined by XRD analysis as well as presence of both Fe⁺² and F⁺³ (and selected satellite signal peaks) observed by XPS. Our results on the ENBPs hold promise for water treatment, since iron NPs are commonly used in wastewater technologies that treat a wide variety of pollutants. Finally, the biological production of ENBP coupled to a biorefinery could become an environmentally friendly platform for nanomaterial biosynthesis as well as an additional source of revenues for a waste-based biorefinery.

Current status of plant metabolite-based fabrication of copper/copper oxide nanoparticles and their applications: a review

Since green mode of nanoparticles (NPs) synthesis is simple, advantageous and environment friendly relative to chemical and physical procedures, various plant species have been used to fabricate copper and copper oxide nanoparticles (Cu/CuO-NPs) owing to the presence of phytochemicals which often act as capping as well as stabilizing agent. These Cu/CuO-NPs are highly stable and used in the degradation of organic dyes like methylene blue and reduction of organic compounds such as phenols. They are also used as antibacterial, antioxidant and antifungal agent due to their cytotoxicity. They are also examined for agricultural crops growth and productivity. Cu-NPs increased the root and shoot growth of mung bean. In wheat plants, these particles reduced shoot growth; and enhanced the grain yield and stress tolerance through starch degradation. Similarly, CuO-NPs treated seedlings have shown reduced chlorophyll, carotenoid and sugar content, whereas proline and anthocyanins were increased in Brassica rapa seedlings. Overall, this review presents the recent understanding of plant-mediated Cu and CuO-NPs fabrication and their application in biomedicine, environmental remediation and agricultural practices. A comparison of the traditional/conventional method of fabrication of NPs with those of green protocols has also been made. Some misconception of copper chemistry has also been critically discussed in terms of oxidation and reduction reactions.

Enhanced biodegradation of an endocrine disrupting micro-pollutant: Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate using biogenic self-assembled monolayer of silver nanoparticles

Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is one of the predominant plasticizer and an endocrine disrupting chemical occurring almost in all partitions of the environment. Though DEHP occur at lower concentration, reluctance arises due to their ability to disrupt endocrine system even lower concentration. In the present study, DEHP was assessed for degradation at minimal level (1-100 μg L^-1) by a novel bacterial strain, Rhodococcus jostii PEVJ9. In the experimental design, significant variables were concentration of silver nitrate and DEHP, pH, temperature, time and agitation. Degradation without SAM-silver nanoparticles was 30-66% (predicted value = 30.8-66.8%, R² = 99.7%) while, degradation in the presence of SAM-silver nanoparticles onto bacterial cells was 100% (predicted value = 98.4-102.1%, R² = 99.6%) within 72 h. In short, this is the first report illustrating the experimental designs in biogenic synthesis of SAM-silver nanoparticles and enhanced degradation of DEHP at minimal level. The study overcomes poor bioavailability and assimilation of DEHP at lower concentration by the microbial population present in the environment. Thus, an efficient clean-up would prevent or minimize DEHP exposure at all trophic levels ranging from feminization of fishes to reproductive disorders in humans.

Biogenic synthesis and antimicrobial activity of silica-coated silver nanoparticles for esthetic dental applications

OBJECTIVES

this study aimed to synthesize AgNPs from green tea (GT) extract, forming GT-AgNPs, and to coat their surfaces with silica, resulting in light-colored Ag@SiO₂ nanoparticles.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

particles were characterized and tested for minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), biofilm formation against Streptococcus mutans and cytotoxicity evaluation on dental pulp fibroblasts.

RESULTS

X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the formation of pure AgNPs, whereas energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapped their elemental atoms. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) demonstrated formation of particles at nanoscale, with moderate polydispersity and negative zeta potential, in agreement with nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) size measurements. Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the successful condensation of silica, which significantly increased surface area by 50%, as assayed by surface area analysis (BET). Thermogravimetric analysis showed a 18%-mass of silica on the surface of Ag@SiO₂NPs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) displayed the spherical shape of nanoparticles and average size of 11 nm for GT-AgNPs and Ag@SiO₂NPs. Ag@SiO₂NPs demonstrated potent antimicrobial action against S. mutans, with MIC determined as 600 μg/mL, and inhibition of approximately 44% (p < 0.05) of biofilm formation. At the MIC concentrations, both NPs did not exhibit cytotoxicity.

CONCLUSION

Ag@SiO₂NPs might have a useful application in dental materials.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The possibility of incorporating antimicrobial properties in restorative materials without compromising esthetics makes the AgNPs@SiO₂ NPs promising agents against S. mutans biofilm formation, hence the prevention of dental caries. This represents a great step towards the development of more interactive biomaterials in dentistry to overcome clinical problems.

Flower Shaped Gold Nanoparticles: Biogenic Synthesis Strategies and Characterization

Microbes can serve as mediators for the fabrication of complicated nano-structures, obviating the tedious and time-consuming methods of synthesis. The shape of a nanoparticle has a very prominent role in defining the functionality in prospective arenas. So, the flower shaped nanoparticles are in focus nowadays due to their enhanced electrocatalytic and optical properties as compared to the spherical ones. We present the biosynthesis of flower shaped gold nanoparticles by Bacillus subtilis RSB64 and process parameters optimization using central composite design. The two well-separated scattering spectra showing absorption peaks at 540 nm and 750 nm indicate the presence of anisotropic gold nanoparticles and the results were corroborated by transmission electron microscopy analysis. The presence of gold nanoparticles was further confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray studies. The functional groups responsible for the stability of gold nanoparticles were predicted by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The gold nanoparticles biosynthesis were collective effects of three experimental process parameters viz pH, temperature and precursor concentration. These three parameters were statistically optimized wherein pH 11.0, substrate concentration 1:1 (v/v) and temperature of 50 °C resulted in the synthesis of stable flower shaped gold nanoparticles of 50 nm size. The results indicated the tailored biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles with a flower like morphology by multi process parameter analysis to finalize robust conditions for the synthesis using B. subtilis RSB64. These gold nanoflowers demonstrate increased surface area efficiency/reactivity and could be employed for sustained and controlled delivery of drugs.

A perspective on biogenic synthesis of platinum nanoparticles and their biomedical applications

In recent era, the interest on inorganic nanoparticles is augmenting due to their engrossing and uncanny properties. Among them, platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) are highly remarkable owing to their intrinsic physicochemical and biological properties making them an effective candidate towards catalytic and biomedical applications. Nevertheless, conventional physical and chemical methodologies of PtNPs synthesis are among the most prevalent protocols to synthesize PtNPs of desired shape and size. However, the above methods create notable concern to health and environment due to the use of harsh and toxic chemicals as well as violent reaction conditions. Hence, an economic, eco-friendly, non-toxic and sustainable route for the synthesis of PtNPs is the need of the hour to circumvent the shortcomings associated with conventional methodologies. In this aspect, the approach of green synthesis has lightened up the way for the environmentally benign synthesis of PtNPs. Interestingly, this review focuses chiefly on the green synthesis of PtNPs from various biological entities such as microorganisms, plants, seaweeds and other innovative miscellaneous protocols. Furthermore, it also summarizes the potential biomedical applications of PtNPs especially as an antibacterial agent and their role as nanomedicine. Overall, the emerging biogenic synthesis of PtNPs makes it feasible to foresee more promising biomedical outcomes in the upcoming future.

Tuber extract of Arisaema flavum eco-benignly and effectively synthesize silver nanoparticles: Photocatalytic and antibacterial response against multidrug resistant engineered E. coli QH4

Metal nanoparticles, synthesized using Phyto-constituents are the most economically and environmentally benign materials ever. Biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from three fractions of Arisaema flavum tuber extract were synthesized and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD (X-rays diffraction), FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and EDX (Energy dispersive Microscopy). XRD pattern show the face centred cubic crystalline (Fcc) structure of AgNPs. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of different Polyphenolic compounds capping the AgNps. UV-visible spectroscopy result confirmed the presence of Ag because of the particular surface plasmon Resonance (SPR) in the area of 400-430 nm. The electron microscope studies revealed the formation of spherical AgNPs with diameter ranging from 12 nm to 20 nm. Strong signals of AgNPs were confirmed with EDX analysis. The antibacterial properties of the AgNPs prepared with various extracts were tested against multi-drug resistant bacteria. Which showed significant antibacterial activity against all the multidrug resistant bacterial strains and especially multidrug resistant engineered E.ColiQH4. AgNPs synthesized by methanolic, Ethyl Acetate and aqueous Extracts of Areseama Flavum exhibited significant Photocatalytic activity to reduce methylene blue. Small size, spherical shape and high dispersion are the key properties due to which the AgNPs are having significant biological and photocatalytic activity. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report of biogenic AgNPs regarding antibacterial activity against multidrug resistant Engineered E.Coli QH4.

Antimicrobial activity of the biogenically synthesized core-shell Cu@Pt nanoparticles

The interest in the biological synthesis of mono metal nanoparticles has been visible for years. As more attention is also given to the biological methods of synthesizing bimetallic nanoparticles, this work used the Agrimoniae herba extract in order to obtain bimetallic core-shell Cu@Pt nanoparticles. The formed core-shell Cu@Pt nanoparticles were characterized by Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–vis), Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) measurements. The obtained core-shell Cu@Pt nanoparticles were analysed in terms of their antibacterial activity. It was discovered that the synthesized nanoparticles exhibited maximum activity against gram-negative bacteria E. coli ATCC 25922, S. aureus ATCC 25923, and P. aeruginosa NCTC 6749. The core-shell Cu@Pt nanoparticles also exhibited activity against the yeast C. albicans ATCC 10231 and dermatophytes T. mentagrophytes ATCC 9533.

Syzygium aromaticum extract mediated, rapid and facile biogenic synthesis of shape-controlled (3D) silver nanocubes

The synthesis of metal nano materials with controllable geometry has received extensive attention of researchers from the past decade. In this study, we report an unexplored new route for rapid and facile biogenic synthesis of silver nanocubes (AgNCs) by systematic reduction of silver ions with crude clove (Syzygium aromaticum) extract at room temperature. The formation and plasmonic properties of AgNCs were observed and the UV-vis spectra show characteristic absorption peak of AgNCs with broaden region at 430 nm along with the intense (124), (686), (454) and (235) peak in X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed the formation and crystallinity of AgNCs. The average size of AgNC cubes were found to be in the range of ~80 to 150 nm and it was confirmed by particles size distribution, scanning and transmission electron microscopy with elemental detection by EDAX. Further FTIR spectra provide the various functional groups present in the S. aromaticum extract which are supposed to be responsible and participating in the reaction for the synthesis of AgNCs. The AgNCs casted over glass substrate show an electrical conductivity of ~0.55 × 10(6) S/m demonstrating AgNCs to be a potential next generation conducting material due to its high conductivity. This work provides a novel and effective approach to control the shape of silver nanomaterial for impending applications. The current synthesis mode is eco-friendly, low cost and promises different potential applications such as biosensing, nanoelectronics, etc.

Biogenic synthesis of multi-applicative silver nanoparticles by using Ziziphus Jujuba leaf extract

Herein, we are reporting for the first time one step biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at room temperature by using Ziziphus Jujuba leaf extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The process of nanoparticles preparation is green, rapid, environmentally benign and cost effective. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by means of UV-Vis., XRD, FT-IR, TEM, DLS and Zeta potential. The absorption band centered at λmax 434 nm in UV-Vis. reflects surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of AgNPs. XRD analysis revealed, that biosynthesized AgNPs are crystalline in nature with the face centered cubic structure. FT-IR analysis indicates that nanoparticles were capped with the leaf extract. TEM images shows the synthesized nanoparticles are having different shapes with 20-30 nm size. The data obtained from DLS that support the hydrodynamic size of 28 nm. Zeta potential of -26.4 mV indicates that the nanoparticles were highly stable in colloidal state. The effect of pH, quantity of leaf extract and concentrations of AgNO3 were also studied to attend control over the particle size and stability. The synthesized AgNPs shows highly efficient catalytic activity towards the reduction of anthropogenic pollutant 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and Methylene Blue (MB) for environmental protection. Synthesized AgNPs also exhibited good antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli.
