Advanced sustainable processes via functionalized Fe-N co-doped fishbone biochar for the remediation of plasticizer di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate-contaminated marine sediment

Sediments are important sinks for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer, and thus, maintaining the sediment quality is essential for eliminating plasticizers in aqueous environments and recovering the sediment ecological functions. To mitigate the potential risks of endocrine-disrupting compounds, identifying an effective and eco-friendly degradation process of organic pollutants from sediments is important. However, sustainable and efficient utilization of slow pyrolysis for converting shark fishbone to generate shark fishbone biochar (SFBC) has rarely been explored. Herein, SFBC biomass was firstly produced by externally incorporating heteroatoms or iron oxide onto its surface in conjunction with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to promote DEHP degradation and explore the associated benthic bacterial community composition from the sediment in the water column using the Fe-N-SFBC/PMS system. SFBC was pyrolyzed at 300-900 °C in aqueous sediment using a carbon-advanced oxidation process (CAOP) system based on PMS. SFBC was rationally modified via N or Fe-N doping as a radical precursor in the presence of PMS (1 × 10-5 M) for DEHP removal. The innovative SFBC/PMS, N-SFBC/PMS, and Fe-N-SFBC/PMS systems could remove 82%, 65%, and 90% of the DEHP at pH 3 in 60 min, respectively. The functionalized Fe3O4 and heteroatom (N) co-doped SFBC composite catalysts within a hydroxyapatite-based structure demonstrated the efficient action of PMS compared to pristine SFBC, which was attributed to its synergistic behavior, generating reactive radicals (SO4•-, HO•, and O2•-) and non-radicals (1O2) involved in DEHP decontamination. DEHP was significantly removed using the combined Fe-N-SFBC/PMS system, revealing that indigenous benthic microorganisms enhance their performance in DEHP-containing sediments. Further, DEHP-induced perturbation was particularly related to the Proteobacteria phylum, whereas Sulfurovum genus and Sulfurovum lithotrophicum species were observed. This study presents a sustainable method for practical, green marine sediment remediation via PMS-CAOP-induced processes using a novel Fe-N-SFBC composite material and biodegradation synergy.

Development in health-promoting essential polyunsaturated fatty acids production by microalgae: a review

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) found in microalgae, primarily omega-3 (ω-3) and omega-6 (ω-6) are essential nutrients with positive effects on diseases such as hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, and coronary risk. Researchers still seek improvement in PUFA yield at a large scale for better commercial prospects. This review summarizes advancements in microalgae PUFA research for their cost-effective production and potential applications. Moreover, it discusses the most promising cultivation modes using organic and inorganic sources. It also discusses biomass hydrolysates to increase PUFA production as an alternative and sustainable organic source. For cost-effective PUFA production, heterotrophic, mixotrophic, and photoheterotrophic cultivation modes are assessed with traditional photoautotrophic production modes. Also, mixotrophic cultivation has fascinating sustainable attributes over other trophic modes. Furthermore, it provides insight into growth phase (stage I) improvement strategies to accumulate biomass and the complementing effects of other stress-inducing strategies during the production phase (stage II) on PUFA enhancement under these cultivation modes. The role of an excessive or limiting range of salinity, nutrients, carbon source, and light intensity were the most effective parameter in stage II for accumulating higher PUFAs such as ω-3 and ω-6. This article outlines the commercial potential of microalgae for omega PUFA production. They reduce the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cancer, and hypertension and play an important role in their emerging role in healthy lifestyle management.

Advancements in Nano-Enhanced microalgae bioprocessing

Microalgae are promising sources of valuable compounds: carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, lipids, etc. To overcome the feasibility challenge due to low yield and attain commercial potential, researchers merge technologies to enhance algal bioprocess. In this context, nanomaterials are attractive for enhancing microalgal bioprocessing, from cultivation to downstream extraction. Nanomaterials enhance biomass and product yields (mainly lipid and carotenoids) through improved nutrient uptake and stress tolerance during cultivation. They also provide mechanistic insights from recent studies. They also revolutionize harvesting via nano-induced sedimentation, flocculation, and flotation. Downstream processing benefits from nanomaterials, improving extraction and purification. Special attention is given to cost-effective extraction, showcasing nanomaterial integration, and providing a comparative account. The review also profiles nanomaterial types, including metallic nanoparticles, magnetic nanomaterials, carbon-based nanomaterials, silica nanoparticles, polymers, and functionalized nanomaterials. Challenges and future trends are discussed, emphasizing nanomaterials' role in advancing sustainable and efficient microalgal bioprocessing, unlocking their potential for bio-based industries.

Kumquat peel-derived biochar to support zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) for enhancing peracetic acid activation to remove acetaminophen from aqueous solution

This study presents the synthesis of a novel composite catalyst, ZIF-67, doped on sodium bicarbonate-modified biochar derived from kumquat peels (ZIF-67@KSB3), for the enhanced activation of peracetic acid (PAA) in the degradation of acetaminophen (APAP) in aqueous solutions. The composite demonstrated a high degradation efficiency, achieving 94.3% elimination of APAP at an optimal condition of 200 mg L-1 catalyst dosage and 0.4 mM PAA concentration at pH 7. The degradation mechanism was elucidated, revealing that superoxide anion (O2•-) played a dominant role, while singlet oxygen (1O2) and alkoxyl radicals (R-O•) also contributed significantly. The degradation pathways of APAP were proposed based on LC-MS analyses and molecular electrostatic potential calculations, identifying three primary routes of transformation. Stability tests confirmed that the ZIF-67@KSB3 catalyst retained an 86% efficiency in APAP removal after five successive cycles, underscoring its durability and potential for application in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

KHCO3-activated high surface area biochar derived from brown algae: A case study for efficient adsorption of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution

The current study aimed to assess the effectiveness of biochar formed from algae in the removal of Cr(VI) through the process of impregnating brown algae Sargassum hemiphyllum with KHCO3. The synthesis of KHCO3-activated biochar (KBAB-3), demonstrating remarkable adsorption capabilities for Cr(VI), was accomplished utilizing a mixture of brown algae and KHCO3 in a mass ratio of 1:3, followed by calcination at a temperature of 700 °C. Based on the empirical evidence, it can be observed that KBAB-3 shown a significant ability to adsorb Cr(VI) within a range of 60-160 mg g-1 across different environmental conditions. In addition, the KBAB-3 material demonstrated the advantageous characteristic of easy separation, allowing for the continued maintenance of a high efficiency in removing Cr(VI) even after undergoing numerous cycles of reuse. In conclusion, the application of KBAB-3, a novel adsorbent, exhibits considerable prospects for effective removal of Cr(VI) from diverse water sources in the near future.

Synergistic microwave and acidic deep eutectic solvent-based pretreatment of Theobroma cacao pod husk biomass for xylooligosaccharides production

The bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass into novel bioproducts is crucial for sustainable biorefineries, providing an integrated solution for circular economy objectives. The current study investigated a novel microwave-assisted acidic deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment of waste cocoa pod husk (CPH) biomass to extract xylooligosaccharides (XOS). The sequential DES (choline chloride/citric acid, molar ratio 1:1) and microwave (450W) pretreatment of CPH biomass was effective in 67.3% xylan removal with a 52% XOS yield from total xylan. Among different XOS of varying degrees of polymerization, a higher xylobiose content corresponding to 69.3% of the total XOS (68.22 mg/g CPH) from liquid fraction was observed. Enzymatic hydrolysis of residual xylan from pretreated CPH biomass with low commercial xylanase (10 IU/g) concentration yielded 24.2% XOS. The MW-ChCl/citric acid synergistic pretreatment approach holds great promise for developing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method contributing to the sustainable production of XOS from agricultural waste streams.

Graphene-based functional electrochemical sensors for the detection of chlorpyrifos in water and food samples: a review

Prolonged and excessive use of chlorpyrifos (CPS) has caused severe pollution, particularly in crops, vegetables, fruits, and water sources. As a result, CPS is detected in various food and water samples using conventional methods. However, its applications are limited due to size, portability, cost, etc. In this regard, electrochemical sensors are preferred for CPS detection due to their high sensitivity, reliability, rapid, on-site detection, and user-friendly. Notably, graphene-based electrochemical sensors have gained more attention due to their unique physiochemical and electrochemical properties. It shows high sensitivity, selectivity, and quick response because of its high surface area and high conductivity. In this review, we have discussed an overview of three graphene-based different functional electrochemical sensors such as electroanalytical sensors, bio-electrochemical sensors, and photoelectrochemical sensors used to detect CPS in food and water samples. Furthermore, the fabrication and operation of these electrochemical sensors using various materials (low band gap material, nanomaterials, enzymes, antibodies, DNA, aptamers, and so on) and electrochemical techniques (CV, DPV, EIS, SWV etc.) are discussed. The study found that the electrical signal was reduced with increasing CPS concentration. This is due to the blocking of active sites, reduced redox reaction, impedance, irreversible reactions, etc. In addition, acetylcholinesterase-coupled sensors are more sensitive and stable than others. Also, it can be further improved by fabricating with low band gap nanomaterials. Despite their advantages, these sensors have significant drawbacks, such as low reusability, repeatability, stability, and high cost. Therefore, further research is required to overcome such limitations.

Controlling effects of terrestrial organic matter on metal contamination and toxicity risks in port sediments

The contents of metals, total carbon, total nitrogen (TN), total organic carbon (TOC), and stable isotope composition (δ13Corg and δ15N) of sediment organic matter (SOM) were investigated to explore the sources and spatial distribution of metals and SOM in the surface sediments (Kaohsiung Port, Taiwan). Results showed that TOC and metals in estuarine sediments are high, gradually decreasing toward the port entrances. The δ13Corg, δ15N, and TOC/TN ratios indicate that SOM comes mainly from terrestrial sources. This study proposes a befitting model between metal pollution and toxicity risk index and SOM sources in port sediments by combining stable isotope composition, correlation matrix, and multiple linear regression analysis. The model indicates that the degree of metal pollution and toxicity risk in sediments are mainly affected by TOCterr content and SOM source. The results help to understand the influence of organic matter sources in port sediments on metal concentration distribution.

Sustainable production of cellulose and hemicellulose-derived oligosaccharides from pineapple leaves: Impact of hydrothermal pretreatment and controlled enzymatic hydrolysis

Globally, the demands for sustainably sourced functional foods like prebiotic oligosaccharides have been constantly increasing. This study assessed the potential of pineapple leaves (PL) as lignocellulosic feedstock for sustainable production of cellulose and hemicellulose-derived oligosaccharides through its hydrothermal pretreatment (HT) followed by controlled enzymatic hydrolysis. PL was subjected to HT at 160, 175, and 190 °C for 20, 30, 60, and 90 min without any catalyst for xylooligosaccharide (XOS) production, whereas, the resulting solid content after HT was subjected to controlled enzymatic hydrolysis by commercial cellulase using conduritol B epoxide (0.5-5 mM) for glucooligosaccharides (GOS) production. HT at 160 °C for 60 min resulted in maximum yield of XOS and GOS at 23.7 and 18.3 %, respectively, in the liquid phase. Controlled enzymatic hydrolysis of HT treated (160 °C) PL solids for 20 and 30 min yielded ∼ 174 mg cellobiose/g dry biomass within 24 h, indicating overall high oligosaccharide production.

Combined toxicity of microplastics and copper on Goniopora columns

As microplastics (MP) become ubiquitous, their interactions with heavy metals threatens the coral ecosystem. This study aimed to assess the combined toxicity of MP and copper (Cu) in the environment of coral. Goniopora columna was exposed to polyethylene microplastics (PE-MP) combined with Cu2+ at 10, 20, 50, 100, and 300 μg/L for 7 days. Polyp length and adaptability were recorded daily, and coral samples were collected at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days to analyse zooxanthellae density and antioxidant activity. Tissue observations and the analysis of MP and Cu2+ accumulation were conducted on the 7th day. After 1 day of exposure, PE-MP combined with different concentrations of Cu2+ significantly decreased polyp length and adaptability compared with PE-MP alone. Simultaneously, a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) content, lead to coral oxidative stress, which was a combined effect with PE-MP. After 3 days of exposure, PE-MP combined with Cu2+ at >50 μg/L significantly reduced zooxanthellae density, damaging the coral's symbiotic relationship. In antioxidant enzyme activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased significantly after 1 day of exposure. After 3 days of exposure, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity significantly increased with Cu2+ at >20 μg/L. After 5 days of exposure, PE-MP combined with different concentrations of Cu2+ significantly reduced catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), and glutathione transferase (GST) activity, disrupting the antioxidant enzyme system, and acting antagonistically to PE-MP alone. Tissue observations revealed that the PE-MP combined with Cu2+ at >50 μg/L caused severe mesenteric atrophy, vacuolar, and Cu2+ accumulation in the coral mesenteric compared with PE-MP alone. The results suggest that combined exposure of PE-MP and copper leads to more severe oxidative stress, disruption antioxidant enzyme system, tissue damage, and Cu2+ accumulation, resulting in a significant maladaptation of corals to the environment.

Sustainable management of tea wastes: resource recovery and conversion techniques

As the demand for tea (Camellia sinensis) has grown across the world, the amount of biomass waste that has been produced during the harvesting process has also increased. Tea consumption was estimated at about 6.3 million tonnes in 2020 and is anticipated to reach 7.4 million tonnes by 2025. The generation of tea waste (TW) after use has also increased concurrently with rising tea consumption. TW includes clipped stems, wasted tea leaves, and buds. Many TW-derived products have proven benefits in various applications, including energy generation, energy storage, wastewater treatment, and pharmaceuticals. TW is widely used in environmental and energy-related applications. Energy recovery from low- and medium-calorific value fuels may be accomplished in a highly efficient manner using pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion, and gasification. TW-made biochar and activated carbon are also promising adsorbents for use in environmental applications. Another area where TW shows promise is in the synthesis of phytochemicals. This review offers an overview of the conversion procedures for TW into value-added products. Further, the improvements in their applications for energy generation, energy storage, removal of different contaminants, and extraction of phytochemicals have been reviewed. A comprehensive assessment of the sustainable use of TWs as environmentally acceptable renewable resources is compiled in this review.

Facile heteroatoms modification biochar production from mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) pericarps for enhanced the suppression of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are critical environmental concerns due to their intrinsic toxic aromatic nature and concomitant circumstances that potentially harm the ecological and human health. In this study, converting mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) pericarps to value-added biochar by pyrolysis for evaluating the potential formation/destruction of biochar-bound PAHs was studied for the first time. This study designed and optimized the thermal processing conditions at 300-900 °C in the CO2 or N2 atmosphere, and heteroatoms (N, O, B, NB, and NS) were modified for mahogany pericarps biochar (MPBC) production. The MPBC500 exhibited significantly higher pyrolysis products of PAHs (2780 ± 38 ng g-1) than that of MPBC900 (78 ± 6 ng g-1) under N2 without introducing modified elements. Specifically, the inhibition capacity of MPBC500 for PAHs under CO2 was improved most efficiently by the active nitrogen species of the pyridinic N and pyrrolic N groups. The pyrolysis conditions and heteroatom modification of MPBC altered its physicochemical properties, that is, aromaticity and hydrophobicity, affecting the PAH concentration and composition in the pyrolysis products. This study reveals sustainable approaches to reduce the environmental footprint of biochar by focusing on increases in PAHs pollution in sustainable biochar produced from a low-carbon bioeconomy perspective.

Fine-tuning of key parameters to enhance biomass and nutritional polyunsaturated fatty acids production from Thraustochytrium sp

The escalating demand for long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) due to their vital health effects has deepened the exploration of sustainable sources. Thraustochytrium sp. stands out as a promising platform for omega-3 and 6 PUFA production. This research strategically optimizes key parameters: temperature, salinity, pH, and G:Y:P ratio and the optimized conditions for maximum biomass, total lipid, and DHA enhancement were 28 °C, 50 %, 6, and 10:1:2 respectively. Process optimization enhanced 32.30 and 31.92 % biomass (9.88 g/L) and lipid (6.57 g/L) yield. Notably, DHA concentration experienced a substantial rise of 69.91 % (1.63 g/L), accompanied by notable increases in EPA and DPA by 82.69 % and 31.47 %, respectively. MANOVA analysis underscored the statistical significance of the optimization process (p < 0.01), with all environmental factors significantly influencing biomass and lipid data (p < 0.05), particularly impacting DHA production. Thraustochytrium sp. can be a potential source of commercial DHA production with the fine-tuning of these key process parameters.

Phthalate esters and nonylphenol concentrations correspond with microplastic distribution in anthropogenically polluted river sediments

This paper presents the phthalate esters (PAEs), nonylphenol (NPs), and microplastics (MPs) in river sediments. Results showed that sediments near residential areas were mainly composed of fine particles, potentially influencing the adsorption of PAEs and NPs in the area. The concentrations of Σ10 PAEs in the sediments ranged between 2448 and 63,457 μg/kg dw, dominated by DEHP and DnOP. Microplastics were detected in all samples, with higher abundances found in sediments near residential areas dominated by polypropylene. Toxicological risk assessment indicated potential risks to sensitive aquatic organisms exposed to the sediments. Correlations between MPs, PAEs, and NPs suggest that MPs may serve as possible sources of PAEs in the sediments. Principal component analysis explained 95.4 % of the pollutant variability in the sediments. Overall, this study emphasizes the significance of monitoring and understanding the presence and interactions of PAEs and MPs in river sediments to assess their potential impacts on aquatic ecosystems.

Metal-free nitrogen and sulfur binary-doped cellulose-based biochar for efficient suppression of priority organic pollutants and environmental application

Biochar production from cellulose biomass is an alternative solution in the search for clean and renewable biofuel. However, the rational design of cellulose biochar (CLBC) for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) reduction by integrating pyrolysis process parameters and introducing heteroatoms as inhibitors remains to be studied. Therefore, exogenous heteroatoms (N, B, S, SB, NB, and NS) were used to modify CLBC for the first time. CLBC300 pyrolyzed at 300 °C in a CO2 atmosphere achieved the highest concentrations of PAHs (4982 ± 271 ng g-1), compared with that of CLBC700 (3615 ± 71 ng g-1) formed in a N2 atmosphere without heteroatom doping. The results showed that binary nitrogen- and sulfur-doped CLBC exhibited remarkable PAH-removal performance of 99 % with the lowest toxic equivalency (TEQ) value of 9 ng g-1. Overall, this study presents novel insights into the development of a heteroatom-based modification approach for reducing CLBC-borne PAHs and creating value-added products from cellulose biomass.

The remediation of marine sediments containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by peroxymonosulfate activated with Sphagnum moss-derived biochar and its benthic microbial ecology

This research was to study the efficiency of Sphagnum moss-derived biochar (SMBC) in removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from marine sediment using a peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based carbon-advanced oxidation process (PMS-CAOPs). Sphagnum moss-derived biochar (SMBC) was generated via a simple thermochemical process for PMS activation toward enhancing decontamination of sediments. At pH 6, the SMBC/PMS system achieved a PAH removal efficiency exceeding 78% in 12 h reaction time. Moreover, PAHs of 6-, 5-, 4-, 3-, and 2-ring structures exhibited 98%, 74%, 68%, 85%, and 91%, of removal, respectively. The SMBC activation of PMS generated both radicals (SO4•- and HO•) and nonradical (1O2), species responsible for PAHs degradation, attributed primarily to inherent iron and carbon moieties. The significant PAHs degradation efficiency showcased by the SMBC/PMS process holds promise for augmenting the performance of indigenous benthic microbial activity in sediment treatment contexts. The response of sediment microbial communities to PAH-induced stress was particularly associated with the Proteobacteria phylum, specifically the Sulfurovum genus. The findings of the present study highlight the efficacy of environmentally benign reactive radical/nonradical-based PMS-CAOP using pristine carbon materials, offering a sustainable strategy for sediment treatment.

Linking seasonal plankton succession and cellular trace metal dynamics in marine assemblages

Factors affecting trace metal dynamics in marine plankton still need to be fully understood. Underlying mechanisms affecting cellular metal distribution, seasonal changes, and the influence of plankton community structure are poorly explored. This study comprehensively analyzed the seasonal changes in environmental factors, plankton community structure, and their impact on plankton cellular metal dynamics. Plankton samples were isolated, and trace metals (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb) were analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Plankton community structure significantly changed with seasons (p < 0.05), which were mainly driven by temperature (seasonal change) and nutrients (eutrophication). Mean plankton cellular trace metals did not significantly change (p > 0.05) in the study area but were higher along estuaries likely due to differences in metal influx from rivers. However, their distribution patterns significantly differ between the wet and dry seasons, likely influenced by the changes in community structure and anthropogenic influx. Cellular trace metals, particularly in phytoplankton, strongly correlated with selected species suggesting the impacts of community structure in trace metal distribution. Hence, the influence of environmental factors in driving plankton succession may have caused a ripple effect on cellular trace metal distribution, especially in phytoplankton. However, both blooming species Skeletonema and Chaetoceros (diatoms) showed a contrasting relationship with cellular metals, suggesting the cooccurrence of bioaccumulation or biodilution mechanisms. This study shows the potential influence of community structure in cellular trace metal dynamics for marine plankton assemblages. However, more than plankton abundance and functional diversity, i.e., species diversity, might be needed to assess the community-level impacts on cellular metals.

Pretreatment of marine sediment for the removal of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate by sulfite in the presence of sorghum distillery residue-derived biochar and its effect on microbiota response

This study investigates the mechanism behind the oxidation di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in marine sediment by coupling sulfite using biochar prepared from sorghum distillery residue (SDRBC). The rationale for this investigation stems from the need to seek effective methods for DEHP-laden marine sediment remediation. The aim is to assess the feasibility of sulfite-based advanced oxidation processes for treating hazardous materials such as DEHP containing sediment. To this end, the sediment in question was treated with 2.5 × 10-5 M of sulfite and 1.7 g L-1 of SDRBC700 at acidic pH. Additionally, the study demonstrated that the combination of SDRBC/sulfite with a bacterial system enhances DEHP removal. Thermostilla bacteria were enriched, highlighting their role in sediment treatment. This study concludes that sulfite-associated sulfate radicals-driven carbon advanced oxidation process (SR-CAOP) offers sustainable sediment pretreatment through the SDRBC/sulfite-mediated microbial consortium, in which the SO3•- and 1O2 were responsible for DEHP degradation. SDRBC/sulfite offers an effective and environmentally friendly method for removing DEHP. Further, these results can be targeted at addressing industry problems related to sediment treatment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in 55-120 μm phytoplankton

A baseline study was undertaken on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in phytoplankton. Plankton samples from six stations (duplicates) in Kaohsiung Harbor (KH), Taiwan along with a phytoplankton control sample afar from the harbor, were collected. We applied size-fractionation to isolate phytoplankton (55-120 μm), followed by sedimentation and centrifugation to remove abiogenic particulates. The phytoplankton was freeze-dried, extracted with acetone: n-hexane (1:1, v/v), and analyzed using GC-MS. ΣPAHs in phytoplankton ranged between 5204 and 28,903 ng/g dry weight (mean: 12,150 ng/g). The ΣPAHs in KH were >7 times than the control site (C1: 3972 ng/g). Cluster analysis showed spatial gradients (northern < southern KH). Accumulated PAHs in phytoplankton were from petrogenic (fishing ports and ships) and pyrogenic (river outflows), dominated by lower-ring PAHs, likely due to their higher bioavailability in the dissolved phase. We present a practical phytoplankton isolation technique for more accurate phytoplankton PAH concentrations with insights into their distribution and sources.

Microalgae and nano-cellulose composite produced via a co-culturing strategy for ammonia removal from the aqueous phase

This study addresses the pressing need for sustainable bioremediation solutions to combat increasing pollution challenges in alignment with sustainability development goals. The research focuses on developing a co-culture approach involving microalgae and Komagataeibacter europaeus BCRC 14148 bacterium to create a biocomposite for efficient ammonia removal. Nanocellulose, produced by the bacterium, serves as a substrate for microalgae attachment. Optimization using specific growth media ratios resulted in biocomposite yields of 4.05 ± 0.16 g/L and 3.83 ± 0.13 g/L in HS medium with fructose and glucose, respectively. The optimal conditions include a 40:60 ratio of HS-F to TAP medium, 25 ℃ incubation, 6000 Lux light intensity, pH 5.5, and a 48-hour incubation period. When applied to wastewater treatment, the biocomposite demonstrated exceptional ammonium removal efficiency at 91.64 ± 1.27 %. This co-culture-derived biocomposite offers an eco-friendly, recyclable, and effective solution for sustainable environmental bioremediation.

Advances in oligosaccharides production from brown seaweeds: extraction, characterization, antimetabolic syndrome, and other potential applications

Brown seaweeds are a promising source of bioactive substances, particularly oligosaccharides. This group has recently gained considerable attention due to its diverse cell wall composition, structure, and wide-spectrum bioactivities. This review article provides a comprehensive update on advances in oligosaccharides (OSs) production from brown seaweeds and their potential health applications. It focuses on advances in feedstock pretreatment, extraction, characterization, and purification prior to OS use for potential health applications. Brown seaweed oligosaccharides (BSOSs) are extracted using various methods. Among these, enzymatic hydrolysis is the most preferred, with high specificity, mild reaction conditions, and low energy consumption. However, the enzyme selection and hydrolysis conditions need to be optimized for desirable yield and oligosaccharides composition. Characterization of oligosaccharides is essential to determine their structure and properties related to bioactivities and to predict their most suitable application. This is well covered in this review. Analytical techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy are commonly applied to analyze oligosaccharides. BSOSs exhibit a range of biological properties, mainly antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and prebiotic properties among others. Importantly, BSOSs have been linked to possible health advantages, including metabolic syndrome management. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions, such as obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, oligosaccharides have potential applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Future research should focus on improving industrial-scale oligosaccharide extraction and purification, as well as researching their potential utility in the treatment of various health disorders.[Figure: see text].

Enhanced photocatalytic activity of tin oxide-doped molybdenum disulfide nanohybrids under visible light irradiation: Antibiotics elimination, heavy metal reduction and antibacterial behavior

Nano-heterojunction photocatalytic can operate removal of pollutants, which is basic for the sustainable development of a clean environment. Herein, we propose a novel MoS2/SnO2 (MS) S-scheme heterojunction by a facile hydrothermal process, which is cheap, easily available, highly visible-light response, and good stability. The MS nano-heterojunction suggested superior performance with the photocatalytic degradation of 97.6% within 100 min for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal, which was 5.74 and 4.88 folds higher than that of pristine MoS2 and SnO2, respectively. The fabricated MS photocatalysts displayed outstanding photocatalytic efficiency toward Cr (VI) reduction. The removal capability of Cr (VI) reached up to 92.5% within 60 min. The photodegradation efficiency was 5.2 folds that of pristine MoS2. In addition, the antibacterial performance approximately approached 100% for E. coli within 10 min, which was more apparent than the others. A series of excellent results implied that MS nano-heterojunction had a high ultraviolet and visible light absorbance, larger specific surface area, outstanding electron-hole pairs migration and higher capability of photo-response electrons and holes separation rate. This system offers a novel window into the evolution of nano-heterojunction for wastewater treatment and solar energy harvesting applications.

Insights into the recent advances of agro-industrial waste valorization for sustainable biogas production

Recent years have seen a transition to a sustainable circular economy model that uses agro-industrial waste biomass waste to produce energy while reducing trash and greenhouse gas emissions. Biogas production from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is an alternative option in the hunt for clean and renewable fuels. Different approaches are employed to transform the LCB to biogas, including pretreatment, anaerobic digestion (AD), and biogas upgradation to biomethane. To maintain process stability and improve AD performance, machine learning (ML) tools are being applied in real-time monitoring, predicting, and optimizing the biogas production process. An environmental life cycle assessment approach for biogas production systems is essential to calculate greenhouse gas emissions. The current review presents a detailed overview of the utilization of agro-waste for sustainable biogas production. Different methods of waste biomass processing and valorization are discussed that contribute towards developing an efficient agro-waste to biogas-based circular economy.

Assessment of thraustochytrids potential for carotenoids, terpenoids and polyunsaturated fatty acids biorefinery

Heterotrophic fast-growing thraustochytrids have been identified as promising candidates for the bioconversion of organic sources into industrially important valuable products. Marine thraustochytrids exhibit remarkable potential for high-value polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) production however their potential is recently discovered for high-value carotenoids and terpenoids which also have a role as a dietary supplement and health promotion. Primarily, omega-3 and 6 PUFAs (DHA, EPA, and ARA) from thraustochytrids are emerging sources of nutrient supplements for vegetarians replacing animal sources and active pharmaceutical ingredients due to excellent bioactivities. Additionally, thraustochytrids produce reasonable amounts of squalene (terpenoid) and carotenoids which are also high-value products with great market potential. Hence, these can be coextracted as a byproduct with PUFAs under the biorefinery concept. There is still quite a few printed information on bioprocess conditions for decent (co)-production of squalene and carotenoid from selective protists such as lutein, astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, and lycopene. The current review seeks to provide a concise overview of the coproduction and application of PUFAs, carotenoids, and terpenoids from oleaginous thraustochytrids and their application to human health.

Microplastics in coral reef sediments underestimated? They may hide in biominerals

Microplastics (MPs) may be underestimated in coral reef sediments. Current pretreatments for determining MPs in the sediments are mainly density separation and organic matter removal, ignoring MPs that may be embedded or encrusted in biominerals. This could lead to discrepancies in assessing the potential risk of MPs contamination. To confirm whether MPs in coral reef sediments are underestimated, a two-step sequential digestion, including organic matter removal (H2O2 digestion) and biomineral removal (HCl digestion), was performed on sediments from the coral reef area of the South Penghu Marine National Park (SPMNP, Taiwan). The MPs abundance and characteristics of the two steps were analyzed separately. The results showed that the average MPs abundance after HCl digestion (78 ± 42 MPs/kg) was significantly higher than that of H2O2 digestion (38 ± 25 MPs/kg). The MPs diversity integrated index (MPDII) in coral reef sediments was low (MPDII = 0.35), and MPs were mainly small (<2.0 mm, 91.3 %), fibrous (93.5 %), colored (60.9 %), and rayon polymers (73.9 %). Correlation analysis showed that MPs in biominerals mainly dominated MPs in the sediments. These results confirm that current assessments of MPs contamination levels in biomineral-rich sediments may be underestimated and uncertain. In addition, the mineralization of organisms in SPMNP reef regions was affected by MPs from moderate to high levels, depending on the proportion of MPs in biominerals.

Biochar for soil remediation: A comprehensive review of current research on pollutant removal

Biochar usage in soil remediation has turned out to be an enticing topic recently. Biochar, a product formed by pyrolysis of organic waste, which is rich in carbon, has the aptitude to ameliorate climate change by sequestering carbon while also enhancing soil quality and crop yields. Two-edged implications of biochar on soil amendment are still being discussed yet, clarity on the long-term implications of biochar on soil health and the environment is not yet achieved. As a result, it is crucial to systematically uncover the pertinent information regarding biochar remediation, as this can serve as a roadmap for future research on using biochar to remediate contaminated soils in mining regions. This review endeavors to bring forth run thoroughly the latest state of research on the use of biochar in soil remediation, along with its potential benefits, limitations, challenges, and future scope. By synthesizing existing literature on biochar soil remediation, this review aims to provide insights into the potential of biochar as a sustainable solution for soil remediation. Specifically, this review will highlight the key factors that influence the effectiveness of biochar for soil remediation and the potential risks associated with its use, as well as the current gaps in knowledge and future research directions.

A circular biorefinery approach for the production of xylooligosaccharides by using mild acid hydrothermal pretreatment of pineapple leaves waste

A hydrothermal process is a sustainable approach for biorefinery leading to conversion of lignocellulosic (LC) biomass into value-added products. This study is based on the production of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from pineapple leaves (PL) waste by using mild acid like gluconic acid (GA). GA, when used as catalyst in hydrothermal process to produce XOS the yield improved. The above process can be integrated with bacterial cellulose (BC) production bioprocess via Komagataeibacter europaeus 14,148 where gluconic acid is produced as by-product. Maximum XOS (2-5 degree of polymerisation) yield of 67.79 % in the liquid fraction was obtained via hydrothermal treatment at 160 °C for 60 min with 5% gluconic acid concentration. It is based on the selective solubilization of hemicellulose fraction. Enzymatic hydrolysis of GA hydrothermally pretreated solid fraction of PL biomass gave 14.5 g/L glucose with 5% solid loading and 10 FPU/gds enzyme loading which was employed for Bacterial cellulose production.

Enhanced copper (II) bioremediation from wastewater using nano magnetite (Fe3O4) modified biochar of Ascophyllum nodosum

Despite the remarkable Cu(II) sorption biochar potential, it is challenging to desorb them for repeated biochar usage. The present study aims to develop engineered biochar by polarizing Ascophyllum nodosum (seaweed) biomass and magnetizing it with Fe3O4 nanoparticles coating. SEM, EDX, XRD, BET, and FT-IR helped to characterize engineered biochar. Unlike conventional, magnetite biochar exhibited a significant Cu(II) removal potential from an aqueous solution at pH 5. The native and magnetic biochar removal efficiency was 75.2 % (36.99 mgg-1) and 90.27% (45.13 mgg-1), respectively. No significant change in temperature effect was observed. Adsorption study showed that magnetic biochar followed the Langmuir isotherm model with Qmax 53.19 mgg-1. Adsorption kinetics study indicates that magnetic biochar chemisorption dominates over physisorption. Thus, this study shows that seaweed-derived modified biochar could be the best alternative bioresource for removing heavy metals from wastewater. It can be reused to reduce the overall treatment cost of the process.

Highly effective synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from lignocellulosic biomass over a green and one-pot reaction in biphasic system

In this study, different types of lignocellulosic biomas were used as substrates for the conversion to 5-HMF via biphasic reaction system that is composed of a reaction phase (aqueous phase) and an extraction phase (organic phase) under the catalysis of various metal salts. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), ionic liquid [BMIM]Cl, aqueous choline chloride, aqueous betaine hydrochloride, and ethylamine hydrochloride were used as the reaction phase in the combination of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as organic solvents. The highest yields of 5-HMF obtained from pineapple stems in reactions with DES were 40.98%, 37.26%, and 23.44% for ChCl:Lac, ChCl:OA, and EaCl:Lac, respectively. Moreover, the combination of dimethyl sulfoxide, betaine hydrochloride aqueous solution, and AlCl3·6H2O with the pineapple stem conversion system resulted in a maximum yield of 61.04% ± 0.55% of 5-HMF. This study also demonstrated that AlCl3·6H2O and betaine hydrochloride could be effectively reused four times, which indicates a green and effective process.

Sustainable mixotrophic microalgae refinery of astaxanthin and lipid from Chlorella zofingiensis

Microalgal astaxanthin possesses numerous bioactivities and has several health applications. The current research focuses on designing and optimizing the two-stage mixotrophic bioprocess by Chlorella zofingiensis for astaxanthin production. Gradual increase in light intensity (4-8k-lux) and 3x micronutrient concentration were the key parameters for maximizing biomass yield of 2.5 g/L during 15 days of stage I. Furthermore, stress conditions (excessive CO2, light, salinity, etc.) enhanced astaxanthin yield at stage II. 20k lux light, 3x nutrients, and 5% CO2 were the best ranges for maximum astaxanthin production. Maximum biomass yield and astaxanthin content were 3.3 g/L and 16.7 mg/g, respectively, after 29 days of bioprocess. Astaxanthin biosynthesis was also affected by salinity, but less than other parameters. Astaxanthin bioprocess resulted in enhanced lipid yields of 35-37%, which could be used for biodiesel. This study shows promising scale-up potential with attractive sustainability features of Chlorella zofingiensis model for commercial astaxanthin-lipid biorefinery.

Recent advancements and challenges in emerging applications of biochar-based catalysts

The sustainable utilization of biochar produced from biomass waste could substantially promote the development of carbon neutrality and a circular economy. Due to their cost-effectiveness, multiple functionalities, tailorable porous structure, and thermal stability, biochar-based catalysts play a vital role in sustainable biorefineries and environmental protection, contributing to a positive, planet-level impact. This review provides an overview of emerging synthesis routes for multifunctional biochar-based catalysts. It discusses recent advances in biorefinery and pollutant degradation in air, soil, and water, providing deeper and more comprehensive information of the catalysts, such as physicochemical properties and surface chemistry. The catalytic performance and deactivation mechanisms under different catalytic systems were critically reviewed, providing new insights into developing efficient and practical biochar-based catalysts for large-scale use in various applications. Machine learning (ML)-based predictions and inverse design have addressed the innovation of biochar-based catalysts with high-performance applications, as ML efficiently predicts the properties and performance of biochar, interprets the underlying mechanisms and complicated relationships, and guides biochar synthesis. Finally, environmental benefit and economic feasibility assessments are proposed for science-based guidelines for industries and policymakers. With concerted effort, upgrading biomass waste into high-performance catalysts for biorefinery and environmental protection could reduce environmental pollution, increase energy safety, and achieve sustainable biomass management, all of which are beneficial for attaining several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).

Enhanced mixotrophic production of lutein and lipid from potential microalgae isolate Chlorella sorokiniana C16

The current work aims to isolate high lutein-producing microalgae and maximize lutein production under a sustainable lutein-lipid biorefinery scheme. Lutein reduces retinitis, macular degeneration risk and improves eye health. An effective bioprocess design optimized nutrients, temperature, light, and salinity for biomass and lutein yield enhancement. 3X macro/micronutrients maximally enhanced biomass and lutein yields, 5.2 g/Land 71.13 mg/L. Temperature 32 °C exhibited maximum 17.4 mg/g lutein content and 10 k lux was most favorable for growth and lutein yield (15.47 mg/g). A 25% seawater addition led maximum of 21-27% lipid that could be used for biodiesel. Isolate was identified as Chlorella sorokiniana C16, which exhibited one of the highest lutein yields reported among recent studies, positioning it as a promising candidate for commercial lutein production. This study provides valuable insights into an effective bioprocess design and highlights the C16 strain potential as a sustainable platform for high-value lutein production under a biorefinery scheme.

A novel tungsten diselenide nanoparticles for enhanced photocatalytic performance of Cr (VI) reduction and ciprofloxacin (CIP)

Nanoparticles (NPs) fabrication is a significant approach to enhance the visible light response of photocatalysts, to realize inexpensive and more harmful compound removal, at larger scale. The poor electrons and holes separation capability and low light activity of bulk materials can be notably enhanced through developing NPs. From photocatalytic investigation, better performance was received in the tungsten diselenide (WSe2) NPs than that in bare WSe2, exhibiting the action of restrained recombination of charge carriers in the NPs. The photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction efficiency of WSe2 NPs is 2.7 folds greater than that by bare WSe2. On the other hand, the photocatalytic efficiency follows the order of nano WSe2-3 > nano WSe2-2 > nano WSe2-1 > bare WSe2, nano WSe2-3 is nearly 2.7 folds greater than that of bare WSe2. The results imply the fabrication of WSe2 NPs and it possesses improved visible light utilization. The proposed WSe2 NPs have merged with the three aspects of photocatalytic capability including the visible light activity, the valid separation of photo-response charge carriers and enough surface active sites owing to the nanoscale formed. This research endows conduct on the potential style of NPs for photo-response water environmental remediation.

Advances in oligosaccharides production from algal sources and potential applications

In recent years, algal-derived glycans and oligosaccharides have become increasingly important in health applications due to higher bioactivities than plant-derived oligosaccharides. The marine organisms have complex, and highly branched glycans and more reactive groups to elicit greater bioactivities. However, complex and large molecules have limited use in broad commercial applications due to dissolution limitations. In comparison to these, oligosaccharides show better solubility and retain their bioactivities, hence, offering better applications opportunity. Accordingly, efforts are being made to develop a cost-effective method for enzymatic extraction of oligosaccharides from algal polysaccharides and algal biomass. Yet detailed structural characterization of algal-derived glycans is required to produce and characterize the potential biomolecules for improved bioactivity and commercial applications. Some macroalgae and microalgae are being evaluated as in vivo biofactories for efficient clinical trials, which could be very helpful in understanding the therapeutic responses. This review discusses the recent advancements in the production of oligosaccharides from microalgae. It also discusses the bottlenecks of the oligosaccharides research, technological limitations, and probable solutions to these problems. Furthermore, it presents the emerging bioactivities of algal oligosaccharides and their promising potential for possible biotherapeutic application.

Microplastics in coastal farmed oyster (Crassostrea angulata) shells: Abundance, characteristics, and diversity

One of the most concerning emerging pollutants is microplastics (MPs), which can infiltrate soft tissues of organisms by ingestion, adhesion, and fusing and may even become embedded in biominerals. However, very little evidence is available about MPs in biominerals found in the wild. This study detected the abundance and characteristics of MPs in the shells of farmed oysters (Crassostrea angulata) off the coast of Taiwan and discussed the distribution, accumulation, and diversity in the oyster shells. The results showed that MPs were ubiquitous in oyster shells, with an average abundance of 0.70 ± 0.40 MPs/g. MPs abundance was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in small oyster shells (shell length < 6.5 cm, weight 5-10 g) and inorganic (CaCO3) fraction (HCl digestion) than in large oyster shells (>6.5 cm, 10-25 g) and an organic fraction (H2O2 digestion), respectively. However, there was no significant difference in MPs abundance between the top and bottom shells (p > 0.05). MPs with a size <2 mm accounted for 78.5 %, fibrous MPs for 93.7 %, and rayon for 89.5 %. The MPs diversity integrated index (MPDII) in oyster shells was low (0.27), and the small and fibrous MPs seemed more easily embedded in biominerals. The findings confirm the presence of MPs in oyster shells in coastal environments. In addition, oyster shells may contain higher amounts of MPs than soft tissues 4-5 times, which needs to be confirmed. Further revealing the distribution and accumulation of MPs in water/terrestrial biominerals will help to understand the fate of MPs in the environment.

Exploring the Anti-Cancer Effects of Fish Bone Fermented Using Monascus purpureus: Induction of Apoptosis and Autophagy in Human Colorectal Cancer Cells

Fish bone fermented using Monascus purpureus (FBF) has total phenols and functional amino acids that contribute to its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Colorectal cancer, one of the most prevalent cancers and the third largest cause of death worldwide, has become a serious threat to global health. This study investigates the anti-cancer effects of FBF (1, 2.5 or 5 mg/mL) on the cell growth and molecular mechanism of HCT-116 cells. The HCT-116 cell treatment with 2.5 or 5 mg/mL of FBF for 24 h significantly decreased cell viability (p < 0.05). The S and G2/M phases significantly increased by 88-105% and 25-43%, respectively (p < 0.05). Additionally, FBF increased the mRNA expression of caspase 8 (38-77%), protein expression of caspase 3 (34-94%), poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) (31-34%) and induced apoptosis (236-773%) of HCT-116 cells (p < 0.05). FBF also increased microtubule-associated protein 1B light chain 3 (LC3) (38-48%) and phosphoinositide 3 kinase class III (PI3K III) (32-53%) protein expression, thereby inducing autophagy (26-52%) of HCT-116 cells (p < 0.05). These results showed that FBF could inhibit HCT-116 cell growth by inducing S and G2/M phase arrest of the cell cycle, apoptosis and autophagy. Thus, FBF has the potential to treat colorectal cancer.

Bioprocess development for the production of xylooligosaccharide prebiotics from agro-industrial lignocellulosic waste

The development of sustainable biorefineries and bioeconomy has been the mandate of most of the governments with major focus on restricting the climate change concerns and finding new strategies to maintain the global food supply chain. Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) are short-chain oligomers which due to their excellent prebiotic potential in the nutraceutical sector has attracted intense research focus in the recent years. The agro-industrial crop and food waste can be utilized for the production of XOS which are derived from hemicellulose fraction (xylan) of the lignocellulosic materials. The extraction of xylan, is traditionally achieved by acidic and alkaline pretreatments which, however, have limited industrial applications. The inclusion of cutting-edge and environmentally beneficial pretreatment methods and technologies such as deep eutectic solvents and green catalysts are preferred. Moreover, the extraction of xylans from biomass using combinatorial pretreatment approaches may help in economizing the whole bioprocess. The current review outlines the factors involved in the xylan extraction and depolymerization processes from different lignocellulosic biomass and the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis for XOS production. The different types of oligosaccharides and their prebiotic potential for the growth of healthy gut bacteria have also been explained. The introduction of modern molecular technologies has also made it possible to identify enzymes and microorganisms with the desired characteristics for usage in XOS industrial production processes.

Facile analysis of mycotoxin in coffee and tea samples using a novel semi-automated in-syringe based fast mycotoxin extraction (FaMEx) technique coupled with direct-injection ESI-MS/MS analysis

Identifying the risk of ochratoxin A in our daily food has become fundamental because of its toxicity. In this work, we report a novel semi-automated in-syringe-based fast mycotoxin extraction (IS-FaMEx) technique coupled with direct-injection electrospray-ionization tandem mass spectrometer (ESI-MS/MS) detection for the quantification of ochratoxin A in coffee and tea samples. Under the optimized conditions, the results reveal that the developed method's linearity was more remarkable, with a correlation coefficient of > 0.999 and > 92% extraction recovery with a precision of 6%. The detection and quantification limits for ochratoxin A were 0.2 and 0.8 ng g-1 for the developed method, respectively, which is lower than the European Union regulatory limit of toxicity for ochratoxin-A (5 ng g-1) in coffee. Furthermore, the newly developed modified IS-FaMEx-ESI-MS/MS exhibited lower signal suppression of 8% with a good green metric score of 0.64. In addition, the IS-FaMEx-ESI-MS/MS showed good extraction recovery, matrix elimination, good detection, and quantification limits with high accuracy and precision due to the fewer extraction steps with semi-automation. Therefore, the presented method can be applied as a potential methodology for the detection of mycotoxins in food products for food safety and quality control purposes.

Significance of glycans in cellulolytic enzymes for lignocellulosic biorefinery - A review

Lignocellulosic (LC) biomass is the most abundant renewable resource for mankind gravitating society towards sustainable solution for energy that can reduce the carbon footprint. The economic feasibility of 'biomass biorefinery' depends upon the efficiency cellulolytic enzymes which is the main crux. Its high production cost and low efficiencies are the major limitations, that need to be resolved. As the complexity of the genome increases, so does the complexity of the proteome, further facilitated by protein post-translational modifications (PTMs). Glycosylation is regarded the major PTMs and hardly any recent work is focused on importance of glycosylation in cellulase. By modifying protein side chains and glycans, superior cellulases with improved stability and efficiency can be obtained. Functional proteomics relies heavily on PTMs because they regulate activity, localization, and interactions with protein, lipid, nucleic acid, and cofactor molecules. O- and N- glycosylation in cellulases influences its characteristics adding positive attributes to the enzymes.

Pyrolysis processes affecting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon profile of pineapple leaf biochar exemplified by atmosphere/temperature and heteroatom doping

The content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in pineapple leaf biochar was examined as a function of pyrolysis atmosphere (CO₂ or N₂), pyrolysis temperature (300-900 °C), and heteroatom (N, B, O, P, NP, or NS) doping. Without doping, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon production was maximal (1332 ± 27 ng/g) in CO₂ at 300 °C and minimal (157 ± 2 ng/g) in N₂ at 700 °C. The main components naphthalene and acenaphthylene accounted for about 91% of the total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in the biochar prepared under CO₂ at 300 °C. Under the maximal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon production conditions (CO₂, 300 °C), doping decreased the total hydrocarbon content by 49% (N), 61% (B), 73% (O), 92% (P), 93% (NB), and 96% (NS). The results shed new light on the management of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in BC production by controlling the pyrolysis atmosphere and temperature in addition to heteroatom doping. Results significantly contributed to the development of circular bioeconomy.

Comprehensive assessment of metals and organic pollutants in pelagic fishing port sediments

Fishing ports are among the environments that accumulate pollutants along the coast but often lack environmental data and scientific research. This study investigated 8 metals, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 10 phthalate esters (APs), and 2 alkylphenols (APs) in the surface sediments of Qianzhen Fishing Port, the largest pelagic fishing port in Taiwan. Indicator compounds, pollution hotspots, potential ecological risk levels, and pollution sources were evaluated. Results showed that copper, zinc, and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in surface sediments were pollution indicators posing potential toxicological risks. Metals and PAHs in sediments were mainly from ship-related sources, while PAEs and APs were related to dockland activities. Combining metal and organic pollutants, the sediments had a moderate potential ecological risk, with metals higher than organic pollutants. Cluster analysis and color geographic map of risks indicate sediment pollution hotspots and areas requiring immediate intervention. In the future, sustainable operation and management can be carried out by using metal-free antifouling paint, improving sewage treatment rate, and regular environmental dredging of fishing port.

Effects of pyrolysis conditions and heteroatom modification on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons profile of biochar prepared from sorghum distillery residues

The formation of 2- to 6-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sorghum distillery residue-derived biochar (SDRBC) was evaluated under different thermochemical pyrolysis conditions of carbonization atmosphere (N2 or CO2), temperature (300-900 °C) and doping with nonmetallic elements, i.e., N, B, O, P, N + B, and N + S. The results indicated that without surface modification, PAHs formation was 944 ± 74 ng g-1, the highest level, and 181 ± 16 ng g-1, the lowest level, at 300 °C in N2 and CO2 atmosphere, respectively. Boron doping of SDRBC significantly reduced the PAHs content (by 97%) under N2 at 300 °C. Results demonstrated that boron modified SDRBC exhibited the highest degree of PAH reduction. Combined pyrolysis temperature and atmosphere in addition to heteroatom doping is a robust and viable strategy for efficient suppression of PAHs formation and high-value utilization of pyrolysis products of low carbon footprint.

Bioprocess engineering to produce essential polyunsaturated fatty acids from Thraustochytrium sp

In recent studies, thraustochytridhas emerged as a sustainable substitute to fish oil or polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA) sources: docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA), anddocosahexaenoic acid(DHA). Due to growing health concerns, there is increasing demand for commercial application of PUFA to several diseases, aquaculture feeds, and dietary products. Thraustochytrium sp. found a sustainable source for considerable PUFA and SFA production and is expected to meet omega PUFA demand globally. This study aims to increase PUFA yield by glucose carbon with an appropriate nitrogen ratio (10:1). The maximum biomass and lipid obtained from 40 g/L glucose, with 7.47±0.3 g/L and 4.63 g/L (60.84±1.4%) yields, respectively. However, maximum relative lipid, DHA and DPA yields were from 30 g/L glucose i.e, 67.6±1.9 % and 963.58±24 and 693.10±24 mg/L respectively with complete glucose assimilation. Thus, this could be a potential source of commercial DPA and DHA producers under the biorefinery scheme.

NiCo2O4-loaded sunflower husk-derived biochar as efficient peroxymonosulfate activator for tetracycline removal in water

In this study, biochar produced from sunflower seeds husk was activated through ZnCl₂ to support the NiCo₂O₄ nanoparticles (NiCo₂O₄@ZSF) in catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) toward tetracycline (TC) removal from aqueous solution. The good dispersion of NiCo₂O₄ NPs on the ZSF surface provided sufficient active sites and abundant functional groups for the adsorption and catalytic reaction. The NiCo₂O₄@ZSF activating PMS showed high removal efficiency up to 99% after 30 min under optimal condition ([NiCo₂O₄@ZSF] = 25 mg L^-1, [PMS] = 0.04 mM, [TC] = 0.02 mM and pH = 7). The catalyst also exhibited good adsorption performance with a maximum adsorption capacity of 322.58 mg g^-1. Sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-), superoxide radical (O₂•-), and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) played a decisive role in the NiCo₂O₄@ZSF/PMS system. In conclusion, our research elucidated the production of highly efficient carbon-based catalysts for environmental remediation, and also emphasized the potential application of NiCo₂O₄ doped biochar.

Development of lignocellulosic biorefineries for the sustainable production of biofuels: Towards circular bioeconomy

The idea of environment friendly and affordable renewable energy resources has prompted the industry to focus on the set up of biorefineries for sustainable bioeconomy. Lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is considered as an abundantly available renewable feedstock for the production of biofuels which can potentially reduce the dependence on petrochemical refineries. By utilizing various conversion technologies, an integrated biorefinery platform of LCB can be created, embracing the idea of the 'circular bioeconomy'. The development of effective pretreatment methods and biocatalytic systems by various bioengineering and machine learning approaches could reduce the bioprocessing costs, thereby making biomass-based biorefinery more sustainable. This review summarizes the development and advances in the lignocellulosic biorefineries from the LCB to the final product stage using various different state-of-the-art approaches for the progress of circular bioeconomy. The life cycle assessment which generates knowledge on the environmental impacts related to biofuel production chains is also summarized.

Advances in machine learning technology for sustainable advanced biofuel production systems in lignocellulosic biorefineries

In view of the global climate change concerns, the society is approaching towards the development of 'green' and renewable energies for sustainable future. The non-renewable fossil fuels may be largely replaced by renewable energy sources, which could facilitate sustainable growth, energy development and lessen the reliance on conventional energy sources. The traditional methods employed in biorefineries to estimate the data values for the biofuel production systems are often complicated, time-consuming and labour-intensive. Modern machine learning (ML) technologies hold enormous potential in managing high-dimensional complex scientific tasks and improving decision-making in energy distribution networks and systems. The data-driven probabilistic ML algorithms could be applied to smart biofuel systems and networks that may reduce the cost of experimental research while providing accurate estimates of product yields. The current review demonstrates a thorough understanding of the application of different ML models to regulate and monitor the production of biofuels from waste biomass through prediction, optimization and real-time monitoring. The in-depth analysis of the most recent advancements in ML-assisted biofuel production methods, including thermochemical and biochemical processes is provided. Moreover, the ML models in addressing the issues of biofuel supply chains, case studies, scientific challenges and future direction in ML applications are also summarized.

The effect of carboxymethyl cellulose and β-cyclodextrin as debittering agents on bitterness and physicochemical properties of bitter gourd extract

Bitter gourd extract (BGE) is rich in antioxidants and anti-diabetic components that promote good human health; however, its bitter taste makes it challenging to use in food. In this study, the effect of carboxymethyl cellulose and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) on the bitterness and properties of BGE were investigated. The bitterness intensity was evaluated by the trained sensory panel, and the physicochemical properties were also determined, including viscosity, total saponin, polyphenol content, antioxidant capacity, and α-amylase inhibition activity. It was found that the bitterness of BGE with 0.75%, w/v β-cyclodextrin decreased significantly by more than 90%. Additionally, FTIR, ¹ H-NMR, and thermogravimetric analysis of BGE supplemented with β-CD confirmed the formation of a complex between β-CD and components of BGE. The findings of the current study also reveal that debittering agents did not inhibit the bioactivities of BGE.

A novel pollution index to assess the metal bioavailability and ecological risks in sediments

The chemical forms of metals in sediments of ports around Taiwan were investigated using sequential extraction. Based on the availability of different chemical forms, novel indices such as bioavailability, mobility, availability, and availability risk of metals in sediments were developed. The results showed that Co, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cu were mainly present in available forms (49-84 %), and the proportion of oxidative or reductive fractionation was the highest. This suggests that the redox potential is a major factor for metal mobility in the sediments. The results from the proposed indexes showed that metals in sediments have low bioavailability but high to very high mobility and availability. Primarily, the proposed index is more appropriate, as the current index for assessing total metal content may overestimate the level of risk. The indexes established can comprehensively evaluate the bioavailability, mobility, availability, and ecological risk of metals in sediments.

A sustainable vanadium bioremediation strategy from aqueous media by two potential green microalgae

Globally, environmental concerns are rapidly growing due to increasing pollution levels. Vanadium is a hazardous heavy metal that poses health issues with an exposure concentration of about 2 ppm. It is regularly discharged by some industries and poses an environmental challenge. There are no sustainable green treatment methods for discharged effluents to mitigate vanadium threats to humans and the environment. In this study, the goal was to develop a green, sustainable method for removing vanadium and to utilize the produced biomass for biofuels, thus offsetting the treatment cost. Microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana SU1 and Picochlorum oklahomensis were employed for vanadium (III) treatment. The maximum removal was 25.5 mg L^-1 with biomass and lipid yields of 3.0 g L^-1 and 884.4 mg L^-1 respectively after 14 days of treatment. The vanadium removal capacity by microalgae was further enhanced up to 2-2.7 folds while optimizing the key parameters, pH, and temperature before removing biomass from the liquid phase. FTIR is used to analyse the reactive groups in algal cell walls to confirm vanadium adsorption and to understand the dominant and quantitative interactions. Zeta potential analysis helps to find out the most suitable pH range to facilitate the ionic bonding of biomass and thus maximum vanadium adsorption. This study addresses regulating external factors for enhancing the removal performance during microalgal biomass harvesting, which significantly enhances the removal of vanadium (III) from the aqueous phase. This strategy aims to improve the removal efficiency of microalgal treatment at an industrial scale for the bioremediation of vanadium and other inorganic pollutants.
