Optimizing bone and biomass co-torrefaction parameters: High-performance arsenic removal from wastewater via co-torrefied bone char

This study aimed to investigate bone char's physicochemical transformations through co-torrefaction and co-pyrolysis processes with biomass. Additionally, it aimed to analyze the carbon sequestration process during co-torrefaction of bone and biomass and optimize the process parameters of co-torrefaction. Finally, the study sought to evaluate the arsenic sorption capacity of both torrefied and co-torrefied bone char. Bone and biomass co-torrefaction was conducted at 175 °C to 300 °C. An orthogonal array of Taguchi techniques and artificial neural networks (ANN) were employed to investigate the influence of various torrefaction parameters on carbon dioxide sequestration within torrefied bone char. A co-torrefied bone char, torrefied at a reaction temperature of 300 °C, a heating rate of 15 °C·min-1, and mixed with 5 gm of biomass (wood dust), was selected for the arsenic (III) sorption experiment due to its elevated carbonate content. The results revealed a higher carbonate fraction (21%) in co-torrefied bone char at 300 °C compared to co-pyrolyzed bone char (500-700 °C). Taguchi and artificial neural network (ANN) analyses indicated that the relative impact of process factors on carbonate substitution in bone char followed the order of co-torrefaction temperature (38.8%) > heating rate (31.06%) > addition of wood biomass (30.1%). Co-torrefied bone chars at 300 °C exhibited a sorption capacity of approximately 3 mg·g-1, surpassing values observed for pyrolyzed bone chars at 900 °C in the literature. The findings suggest that co-torrefied bone char could serve effectively as a sorbent in filters for wastewater treatment and potentially fulfill roles such as a remediation agent, pH stabilizer, or valuable source of biofertilizer in agricultural applications.

Kumquat peel-derived biochar to support zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) for enhancing peracetic acid activation to remove acetaminophen from aqueous solution

This study presents the synthesis of a novel composite catalyst, ZIF-67, doped on sodium bicarbonate-modified biochar derived from kumquat peels (ZIF-67@KSB3), for the enhanced activation of peracetic acid (PAA) in the degradation of acetaminophen (APAP) in aqueous solutions. The composite demonstrated a high degradation efficiency, achieving 94.3% elimination of APAP at an optimal condition of 200 mg L-1 catalyst dosage and 0.4 mM PAA concentration at pH 7. The degradation mechanism was elucidated, revealing that superoxide anion (O2•-) played a dominant role, while singlet oxygen (1O2) and alkoxyl radicals (R-O•) also contributed significantly. The degradation pathways of APAP were proposed based on LC-MS analyses and molecular electrostatic potential calculations, identifying three primary routes of transformation. Stability tests confirmed that the ZIF-67@KSB3 catalyst retained an 86% efficiency in APAP removal after five successive cycles, underscoring its durability and potential for application in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

26.5625 Gbaud PAM-4 short-reach transmission at 75°C using 850 nm VCSELs with strategic oxide guiding layer positioning

This article presents an all-epitaxy approach to reduce the root mean square spectral width (ΔλR M S) of 850 nm oxide-confined vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with a large aperture of 7 µm through strategic optimization of the oxide guiding layer within the epitaxy structure. At 75°C, the VCSEL demonstrates a ΔλR M S of ∼0.3 nm at a bias current of 7.5 mA. Furthermore, the VCSEL achieves successful transmission of 26.5625 Gbaud PAM-4 modulation over a short-reach (SR) OM4 fiber link while maintaining a TDECQ budget below the 4.5 dB specified by 50G IEEE Ethernet standards.

Effects of water washing and KOH activation for upgrading microalgal torrefied biochar

Torrefaction is an effective pathway for microalgal solid biofuel upgrading, and alkali metal activation is also an efficient method to enhance fuel properties. This study explores the comparison of torrefaction alone and KOH activation combined with torrefaction to determine a better operation for biochar production from the microalga Nannochloropsis Oceanica. The results indicate that the HHV ranges of KOH-activated biochar and unactivated biochar are 25.611-32.792 MJ·kg-1 and 25.024-26.389 MJ·kg-1, respectively. Furthermore, KOH-activated biochar is better than unactivated biochar, with less residue, broader pyrolysis and combustion temperature ranges, higher elemental carbon, and less combined carbon. Moreover, KOH-activated biochar is close to the unactivated one from the viewpoint of expense calculation and life cycle assessment and thus possesses a better comprehensive performance. Overall, KOH activation is an efficient method for upgrading microalgal solid biofuel. The results are conducive to exploring further modification of microalgal solid biofuel production with better properties, thus leading to a greener and more efficient approach for upgrading fuel performance.

KHCO3-activated high surface area biochar derived from brown algae: A case study for efficient adsorption of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution

The current study aimed to assess the effectiveness of biochar formed from algae in the removal of Cr(VI) through the process of impregnating brown algae Sargassum hemiphyllum with KHCO3. The synthesis of KHCO3-activated biochar (KBAB-3), demonstrating remarkable adsorption capabilities for Cr(VI), was accomplished utilizing a mixture of brown algae and KHCO3 in a mass ratio of 1:3, followed by calcination at a temperature of 700 °C. Based on the empirical evidence, it can be observed that KBAB-3 shown a significant ability to adsorb Cr(VI) within a range of 60-160 mg g-1 across different environmental conditions. In addition, the KBAB-3 material demonstrated the advantageous characteristic of easy separation, allowing for the continued maintenance of a high efficiency in removing Cr(VI) even after undergoing numerous cycles of reuse. In conclusion, the application of KBAB-3, a novel adsorbent, exhibits considerable prospects for effective removal of Cr(VI) from diverse water sources in the near future.

Recent advances in liquid fuel production from plastic waste via pyrolysis: Emphasis on polyolefins and polystyrene

The management of plastic waste (PW) has become an indispensable worldwide issue because of the enhanced accumulation and environmental impacts of these waste materials. Thermo-catalytic pyrolysis has been proposed as an emerging technology for the valorization of PW into value-added liquid fuels. This review provides a comprehensive investigation of the latest advances in thermo-catalytic pyrolysis of PW for liquid fuel generation, by emphasizing polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene. To this end, the current strategies of PW management are summarized. The various parameters affecting the thermal pyrolysis of PW (e.g., temperature, residence time, heating rate, pyrolysis medium, and plastic type) are discussed, highlighting their significant influence on feed reactivity, product yield, and carbon number distribution of the pyrolysis process. Optimizing these parameters in the pyrolysis process can ensure highly efficient energy recovery from PW. In comparison with non-catalytic PW pyrolysis, catalytic pyrolysis of PW is considered by discussing mechanisms, reaction pathways, and the performance of various catalysts. It is established that the introduction of either acid or base catalysts shifts PW pyrolysis from the conventional free radical mechanism towards the carbonium ion mechanism, altering its kinetics and pathways. This review also provides an overview of PW pyrolysis practicality for scaling up by describing techno-economic challenges and opportunities, environmental considerations, and presenting future outlooks in this field. Overall, via investigation of the recent research findings, this paper offers valuable insights into the potential of thermo-catalytic pyrolysis as an emerging strategy for PW management and the production of liquid fuels, while also highlighting avenues for further exploration and development.

A comprehensive study of artificial neural network for sensitivity analysis and hazardous elements sorption predictions via bone char for wastewater treatment

Using bone char for contaminated wastewater treatment and soil remediation is an intriguing approach to environmental management and an environmentally friendly way of recycling waste. The bone char remediation strategy for heavy metal-polluted wastewater was primarily affected by bone char characteristics, factors of solution, and heavy metal (HM) chemistry. Therefore, the optimal parameters of HM sorption by bone char depend on the research being performed. Regarding enhancing HM immobilization by bone char, a generic strategy for determining optimal parameters and predicting outcomes is crucial. The primary objective of this research was to employ artificial neural network (ANN) technology to determine the optimal parameters via sensitivity analysis and to predict objective function through simulation. Sensitivity analysis found that for multi-metals sorption (Cd, Ni, and Zn), the order of significance for pyrolysis parameters was reaction temperature > heating rate > residence time. The primary variables for single metal sorption were solution pH, HM concentration, and pyrolysis temperature. Regarding binary sorption, the incubation parameters were evaluated in the following order: HM concentrations > solution pH > bone char mass > incubation duration. This approach can be used for further experiment design and improve the immobilization of HM by bone char for water remediation.

Monolithically integrated 940 nm VCSELs on bulk Ge substrates

This research successfully developed an independent Ge-based VCSEL epitaxy and fabrication technology route, which set the stage for integrating AlGaAs-based semiconductor devices on bulk Ge substrates. This is the second successful Ge-based VCSEL technology reported worldwide and the first Ge-based VCSEL technology with key details disclosed, including Ge substrate specification, transition layer structure and composition, and fabrication process. Compared with the GaAs counterparts, after epitaxy optimization, the Ge-based VCSEL wafer has a 40% lower surface root-mean-square roughness and 72% lower average bow-warp. After device fabrication, the Ge-based VCSEL has a 10% lower threshold current density and 19% higher maximum optical differential efficiency than the GaAs-based VCSEL.

25 Gb/s NRZ transmission at 85°C using a high-speed 940 nm AlGaAs oxide-confined VCSEL grown on a Ge substrate

In this Letter, we present a comprehensive analysis of the high-speed performance of 940 nm oxide-confined AlGaAs vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) grown on Ge substrates. Our demonstration reveals a pronounced superiority of Ge-based VCSELs in terms of thermal stability. The presented Ge-VCSEL has a maximum modulation bandwidth of 16.1 GHz and successfully realizes a 25 Gb/s NRZ transmission at 85  ∘C. The experimental results underscore the significance and potential of Ge-VCSELs for applications requiring robust performance in high-temperature environments, laying the cornerstone for the future development of VCSEL devices.

Catalytic torrefaction effect on waste wood boards for sustainable biochar production and environmental remediation

Wood boards used in construction are generally treated with toxic chemicals, making them unsuitable for further use and causing environmental pollution. This study evaluates the possibility of using catalytic torrefaction as a pretreatment to improve wood pyrolysis and combustion for greener biochar production. Waste beech boards were impregnated with different K2CO3 solutions (0-0.012 M), then torrefied between 5 and 60 min at 275 °C. The ICP-AES showed that the board's surface held more potassium than the core. Torrefaction coupled with potassium decreased the C-O and -OH stretches. Thermogravimetric analysis of torrefied wood showed that the board's internal heating degraded the core more than the surface. The exothermic reactions made potassium's catalytic action more efficient in the core. Interactions between the potassium content and torrefaction duration decreased the pyrolysis' maximum devolatilization temperature. During combustion, potassium decreased the ignition temperature by up to 9% and 3% at the surface and core, respectively, while the torrefaction increased it. The catalytic torrefaction significantly decreased the devolatilization peak during combustion, thus making the wood's combustion similar to that of coal, having only the char oxidation step. These findings highlight the advantages and challenges of waste wood's catalytic-torrefaction for biochar production to reduce environmental pollution.

Environmental fate of aquatic pollutants and their mitigation by phycoremediation for the clean and sustainable environment: A review

Emerging pollutants such as natural and manufactured chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, surfactants, and other biological agents such as personal care products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and many industrial discharges hamper the aquatic environment. Nanomaterials and microplastics, among the categories of pollutants, can directly interfere with the marine ecosystem and translate into deleterious effects for humans and animals. They are either uncontrolled or poorly governed. Due to their known or suspected effects on human and environmental health, some chemicals are currently causing concern. The aquatic ecology is at risk from these toxins, which have spread worldwide. This review assesses the prevalence of emerging and hazardous pollutants that have effects on aquatic ecosystems and contaminated water bodies and their toxicity to non-target organisms. Microalgae are found to be a suitable source to remediate the above-mentioned risks. Microalgae based mitigation techniques are currently emerging approaches for all such contaminants, including the other categories that are discussed above. These studies describe the mechanism of phycoremediation, provide outrage factors that may significantly affect the efficiency of contaminants removal, and discuss the future directions and challenges of microalgal mediated remediations.

Hollow-Structured N-doped carbon-embedded CoFe NanoAlloy for boosting activation of Monopersulfate: Engineered interface and heteroatom Doping-Induced enhancements

While transition metals are useful for activating monopersulfate (MPS) to degrade contaminants, bimetallic alloys exhibit stronger catalytic activities owing to several favorable effects. Therefore, even though Co is an efficient metal for MPS activation, CoFe alloys are even more promising heterogeneous catalysts for MPS activation. Immobilization/embedment of CoFe alloy nanoparticles (NPs) onto hetero-atom-doped carbon matrices appears as a practical strategy for evenly dispersing CoFe NPs and enhancing catalytic activities via interfacial synergies between CoFe and carbon. Herein, N-doped carbon-embedded CoFe alloy (NCCF) is fabricated here to exhibit a unique hollow-engineered nanostructure and the composition of CoFe alloy by using Co-ZIF as a precursor after the facile etching and Fe doping. The Fe dopant embeds CoFe alloy NPs into the hollow-structured N-doped carbon substrate, enabling NCCF to possess the higher mesoscale porosity, active N species as well as more superior electrochemical properties than its analogue without Fe dopants, carbon matrix-supported cobalt (NCCo). Thus, NCCF exhibits a considerably larger activity than NCCo and the benchmark catalyst, Co3O4 NP, for MPS activation to degrade an environmental hormone, dihydroxydiphenyl ketone (DHPK). Besides, NCCF + MPS shows an even lower activation energy for DHPK degradation than literatures, and retains its high efficiency for eliminating DHPK in different water media. DHPK degradation pathway and ecotoxicity assessment are unraveled based on the insights from the computational chemistry, demonstrating that DHPK degradation by NCCF + MPS did not result in the formation of toxic and highly toxic by-products. These features make NCCF a promising heterogeneous catalyst for MPS activation to degrade DHPK.

Harvesting visible light for enhanced catalytic degradation of wastewater using TiO2@Fe3O4 embedded on two dimensional reduced graphene oxide nanosheets

Carbon-integrated binary metal oxide semiconductors have gained prominence in the last decade as a better material for photocatalytic wastewater treatment technology. In this regard, this research describes the investigation of the binary metal oxide TiO2@Fe3O4 embedded on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets synthesized through a combination of sol-gel, chemical precipitation, and Hummer's processes. Besides, the catalyst is applied for the photocatalytic degradation of organic chlorophenol pollutants. The characterized diffraction results showed the peak broadening of the rGO-TiO2@Fe3O4 composite formed with tetragonal and cubic structures having small crystallite sizes. The TEM observation shows an enormous miniature of TiO2@Fe3O4 nanospheres spread on the folded 2D-rGO nanosheets with a large BET surface area. The XPS result holds the mixed phases of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3. Finally, the catalyst demonstrated a low band gap with extended light absorption towards visible light irradiation. The synergistic interactions between Fe3+ and Fe2+ improved the visible light activity due to the incorporation of rGO, and also possessed good recycling capacity. The increased mobility of electrons at the interfaces of TiO2 and Fe3O4 due to the mixing of rGO results in the separation of charge carriers by elevating the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of chlorophenol.

[Efficacy analysis of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in morbidly obese patients aged 10-21 years]

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in morbidly obese patients aged 10 to 21 years. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical data from 89 out of 200 patients who underwent LSG at the Gastrointestinal Surgery/Weight Loss Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University between January 2015 and December 2020. The primary outcome measures were the completion rate of LSG, the incidence of perioperative complications, and weight-related indicators 3, 6, 12, and ≥24 months postoperatively. Additionally, we compared glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, vitamin levels, liver function, and other relevant biochemical variables before and after surgery. Normally distributed continuous data are presented as x±s. Because the numbers of patients at each follow-up time point were not identical with the number of patients in the study cohort preoperatively, independent sample t-tests were used for intergroup comparisons. Non-normally distributed continuous data are presented as M(Q1, Q3), and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for intergroup comparisons. Results: Among the 89 patients, 35 were male (39.3%), the mean age was (18±2) years, and mean body mass index (BMI) 38.5±4.8 kg/m²; 37 of the patients having a BMI greater than 40 kg/m². Additionally, 63 patients (70.8%) had fatty livers, 34 (38.2%) hyperuricemia, 31(34.8%) sleep apnea syndrome, 20 (22.4%) gastroesophageal reflux, eight (8.9%) type 2 diabetes, and two (2.2%) hypertension. All 89 patients underwent LSG surgery successfully, with no conversions to open surgery. During the perioperative period, there were no cases of major bleeding, gastric leakage, or infections. Notable postoperative symptoms included nausea, vomiting, and pain, most of which improved by the second postoperative day. BMI values 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively had decreased to 31.5±5.8 kg/m², 28.6±4.3 kg/m², and 26.3±4.4 kg/m², respectively. All of these BMI values differed significantly from preoperative values (all P<0.05). At 12 and ≥24 months postoperatively, the percentages of total weight loss were (31.3±9.3)% and (33.1±10.5)%, respectively, both differing significantly from 3 months postoperatively (20.5±5.1)% (all P<0.05). The percentages of excess weight loss at 12 and ≥24 months postoperatively were 91% (70%, 113%) and 95% (74%, 118%) , respectively, both differing significantly from the percentage of total weight loss 3 months postoperatively (56% [45%, 72%]) (both P<0.05). Alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase serum concentrations decreased from preoperative values of 44.4 (25.5, 100.5) U/L and 29.0 (9.5, 48.0) U/L to 14.0 (10.8, 18.3) U/L and 13.0 (10.5, 17.3) U/L, respectively, ≥24 months postoperatively. Hemoglobin A1c decreased from 5.6 (5.3, 5.8)% preoperatively to ≥24 months postoperatively 5.3 (5.0, 5.4)%. High-density lipoprotein increased from 1.0 (0.9, 1.2) mmol/L preoperatively to 1.4 (1.1, 1.6) mmol/L ≥24 months postoperatively. Vitamin B12 decreased from 350.0 (256.8, 441.3) μg/L preoperative to 230.3(195.4, 263.9) μg/L ≥24 months postoperatively. All differed significantly from preoperative values (all P<0.05). Conclusion: LSG has favorable efficacy in morbidly obese patients aged 10 to 21 years. However, further confirmation is required through long-term, multicenter, randomized, controlled trials.

[Dilemma and breakthrough in the advancement of bariatric and metabolic surgery in China]

China currently has the largest population of overweight and obese individuals globally. Bariatric surgery is by far the most effective approach to address obesity and associated metabolic conditions. To manage the significant growth of obesity, China's bariatric and metabolic surgery has assumed a pivotal role. Despite a delayed start compared to other nations, China has made significant progress in bariatric metabolic surgery over the past two decades. Presently, the annual number of surgeries ranks ahead worldwide. However, the proportion of eligible obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery in China remains lower than global averages. Looking ahead, China's bariatric metabolic surgery field offers ample room for growth and improvement. This paper aims to highlight the achievements in bariatric and metabolic surgery within China while also addressing challenges, such as the high proportion of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, adherence to operation standards and guidelines, postoperative management and loss of follow-up, and quality control of database. By analyzing the current landscape and challenges, it is anticipated that China's bariatric metabolic surgery will continue to make remarkable progress in the future, bolstered by the collective dedication of the medical community.

Tetracycline-adsorbed biochar for solid biofuel usage to achieve waste utilization for environmental sustainability

Biochar is widely used to remove organic pollutants from the environment. Several studies have focused on pollutant removal via biochar adsorption. However, research on the subsequent processing of pollutant-adsorbed biochar is lacking. This study explored the potential of biochar for the adsorption of an aquatic organic pollutant (tetracycline) and its subsequent use as a solid biofuel. These results suggest that corn straw-derived biochar (torrefaction and pyrolysis) is suitable for two-stage utilization to achieve bioresource valorization for environmental sustainability. Tetracycline-adsorbed biochar, particularly biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C, is suitable for use as a biofuel. The biochar produced via torrefaction (300 °C) and pyrolysis (600 °C) is the optimal choice, with surface area, contact angle, graphitization degree, calorific value, enhancement factor, and upgrading energy index values of 172.48 m2/g, 120.4°, 3.87, 26.983 MJ/kg, 1.58, and 33.72, respectively. This is supported by the results of expense calculation, comprehensive performance analysis, and life-cycle assessment. Overall, the biochar produced in this study is suitable for organic pollutant removal and as solid biofuel; thus, it can be used to realize waste utilization for environmental sustainability.

Low-temperature biochar production from torrefaction for wastewater treatment: A review

Biochar, a carbon-rich and por ous material derived from waste biomass resources, has demonstrated tremendous potential in wastewater treatment. Torrefaction technology offers a favorable low-temperature biochar production method, and torrefied biochar can be used not only as a solid biofuel but also as a pollutant adsorbent. This review compares torrefaction technology with other thermochemical processes and discusses recent advancements in torrefaction techniques. Additionally, the applications of torrefied biochar in wastewater treatment (dyes, oil spills, heavy metals, and emerging pollutants) are comprehensively explored. Many studies have shown that high productivity, high survival of oxygen-containing functional groups, low temperature, and low energy consumption of dried biochar production make it attractive as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment. Moreover, used biochar's treatment, reuse, and safe disposal are introduced, providing valuable insights and contributions to developing sustainable environmental remediation strategies by biochar.

Mesoporous NiO/Ni2O3 nanoflowers for favorable visible light photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol

The present study highlights the treatment of industrial effluent, which is one of the most life-threatening factors. Herein, for the first time, two types of NiO (green and black) photocatalysts were prepared by facile chemical precipitation and thermal decomposition methods separately. The synthesized NiO materials were demonstrated with various instrumental techniques for finding their characteristics. The X-ray diffraction studies (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the presence of Ni2O3 in black NiO material. The transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images engrained the nanospherical shaped green NiO and nanoflower shaped black NiO/Ni2O3 materials. Further, the band gap of black NiO nanoflower was 2.9 eV compared to green NiO having 3.8 eV obtained from UV-vis spectroscopy. Meanwhile, both NiO catalysts were employed for visible light degradation, which yields a 60.3% efficiency of black NiO comparable to a 4.3% efficiency of green NiO within 180 min of exposure. The higher degrading efficiency of black NiO was due to the presence of Ni2O3 and the development of pores, which was evident from the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) method. Type IV hysteresis was observed in black NiO nanoflowers with high surface area and pore size measurements. This black NiO/Ni2O3 synthesized from the thermal decomposition method has promoted better photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol upon exposure to visible light and is applicable for other industrial pollutants.

Multistage utilization of soybean straw-derived P-doped biochar for aquatic pollutant removal and biofuel usage

Biochar is of great importance to realizing solid biowastes reduction and environmental remediation. Modifying biochar for better performance is also of great concern to achieve property improvement. P-doped biochar from soybean straw is prepared for multistage utilization to realize water pollutant removal and biofuel usage. The results suggest that the prepared biochar is adequate for sulfadiazine adsorption and has stable performance under coexisting ions and aquatic pH. Furthermore, the higher heating value of the biochar is close to coal and thus can be an alternative to fossil fuel. The maximum sulfadiazine adsorption amount of P-doped biochar is 252.24 mg·g-1, and the P-doped biochar HHV is 24 MJ·kg-1 which can be an alternative to coal. The greenhouse gas and pollutant emission potential are also considered to explore the environmental impact of P-doped biochar production and usage. Overall, the optimal ratio of soybean straw: K3PO4 is 3:1.

A critical review on biochar production from pine wastes, upgradation techniques, environmental sustainability, and challenges

Pine wastes, including pine needles, cones, and wood, are abundantly produced as an agroforestry by-product globally and have shown tremendous potential for biochar production. Various thermochemical conversion technologies have exhibited promising results in converting pine wastes to biochar, displaying impressive performance. Hence, this review paper aims to investigate the possibilities and recent technological advancements for synthesizing biochar from pine waste. Furthermore, it explores techniques for enhancing the properties of biochar and its integrated applications in various fields, such as soil and water remediation, carbon sequestration, battery capacitor synthesis, and bio-coal production. Finally, the paper sheds light on the limitations of current strategies, emphasizing the need for further research and study to address the challenges in pine waste-based biochar synthesis. By promoting sustainable and effective utilization of pine wastes, this review contributes to environmental conservation and resource management.

An overview of commercialization and marketization of thermoelectric generators for low-temperature waste heat recovery

According to statistics, low-temperature waste heat below 300°C accounts for more than 89% of industrial waste heat. If the waste heat is not recycled, a large amount of low-temperature waste heat will be released into the atmosphere, thereby exacerbating global warming and posing a significant threat to human survival. Although the power generation efficiency of solid-state thermoelectric generation technology is lower than the organic Rankine cycle, it only requires a smaller construction area, which increases its market acceptance, applicability, and penetration. Especially in the pursuit of net-zero emissions by global companies, the importance of low-temperature waste heat recovery and power generation is even more prominent. The current thermoelectric conversion efficiency of commercial thermoelectric chips is about 5%. Power generation cost, thermoelectric conversion efficiency, and energy use efficiency are highly correlated with the commercialization of solid-state thermoelectric technology. This research shares five practical waste heat power generation cases commercialized by recycling three heat sources. It also points out the three significant challenges facing the commercialization of power generation from low-temperature waste heat recovery. This study analyzes 2,365 TEG patents submitted by 28 companies worldwide to determine the basic technology for realizing waste heat recovery through TEG and explore the potential commercialization of related waste heat recovery products. The future challenge for the large-scale commercialization of solid-state thermoelectric technology is not technological development but financial incentives related to changes in international energy prices and subsidies that promote zero carbon emissions.

Construction and demolition waste as a high-efficiency advanced process for organic pollutant degradation in Fenton-like reaction to approach circular economy

The Fenton-like reaction is a promising organic wastewater treatment reaction among advanced oxidation processes (AOP), which has emerged to replace the conventional Fenton reaction. Recycled construction and demolition waste (CDW), which is porous and rich in iron, manganese, and magnesium, can be reused as a Fenton-like catalyst. This study proposes an AOP wastewater treatment strategy using recycled porous CDW mixed with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to decompose methylene blue (MB) wastewater. According to the apparent first-order rate (Kapp) of 10 ppm MB adsorption, CDW-3, having the highest specific surface area, also has the highest Kapp of 0.23 min-1 g-1. The optimized conditions recommended by the Taguchi method include a 0.3 g mL-1 CDW-3 concentration, a 0.254 g mL-1 H2O2 concentration, and 10 ppm MB, resulting in an about 2.01 min-1Kapp value. In addition, MB concentration is observed as the most influential factor for Kapp, which decreases with increasing MB concentration and is about 0.62 min-1 at 1000 ppm MB. Repeating the Fenton-like reaction five times at 100 p.m. MB using the same CDW-3, the Kapp is about 0.64 min-1, which is 86% of the initial run. The synergistic effect index (ξ) is defined to quantify the level of interaction between CDW and H2O2, which produces free radicals during the Fenton-like process. The ξ of CDW-3 is about 2.16. Overall, it is demonstrated that CDW is a promising catalyst for Fenton-like reactions, and the synergistic effect index (ξ) can be used as a reference index to evaluate the catalytic generation of free radicals between the catalyst and H2O2.

Steam explosion as sustainable biomass pretreatment technique for biofuel production: Characteristics and challenges

The biorefining process of lignocellulosic biomass has recently emerged as one of the most profitable biofuel production options. However, pretreatment is required to improve the recalcitrant lignocellulose's enzymatic conversion efficiency. Among biomass pretreatment methods, the steam explosion is an eco-friendly, inexpensive, and effective approach to pretreating biomass, significantly promoting biofuel production efficiency and yield. This review paper critically presents the steam explosion's reaction mechanism and technological characteristics for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment. Indeed, the principles of steam explosion technology for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment were scrutinized. Moreover, the impacts of process factors on pretreatment efficiency and sugar recovery for the following biofuel production were also discussed in detail. Finally, the limitations and prospects of steam explosion pretreatment were mentioned. Generally, steam explosion technology applications could bring great potential in pretreating biomass, although deeper studies are needed to deploy this method on industrial scales.

Comparative advantages analysis of oxidative torrefaction for solid biofuel production and property upgrading

This study performs the comparative advantage analysis of oxidative torrefaction of corn stalks to investigate the advantages of oxidative torrefaction for biochar fuel property upgrading. The obtained results indicate that oxidative torrefaction is more efficient in realizing mass loss and energy density improvement, as well as elemental carbon accumulation and surface functional groups removal, and thus leads to a better fuel property. The maximum values of relative mass loss, higher heating value, enhancement factor, and energy yield are 3.00, 1.10, 1.03, and 0.87, respectively. The relative elemental carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen content ranges are 1.30-3.10, 1.50-3.30, and 2.00-6.80, respectively. In addition, an excellent linear distribution is obtained between the comprehensive pyrolysis index and torrefaction severity index, with elemental carbon and oxygen component variation stemming from pyrolysis performance correlating to the elemental component and valance.

[Advances in endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty for the treatment of obesity and metabolic disease]

Obesity poses a serious threat to human health, and although bariatric surgery has been proven effective treatment for morbidly obese patients, its surgical risks and high medical costs limit its clinical application and popularity. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), as a relatively new endoscopic surgery technique for weight loss, has satisfactory weight loss effects compared to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and lifestyle interventions, while preserving the normal structure of the stomach. Its weight loss effects and safety have been validated in multicenter studies abroad. Although, ESG has not yet been widely performed in China, with the gradual maturity of this technique, its prospects are worth attention in the field of weight loss. In the future, large-scale, long-term, multi-center studies are urgently needed in China to clarify the long-term effects, remission of comorbidities, and occurrence of complications of ESG surgery in obese and metabolic disease patients.

First principal observation documenting the three-dimensional uptake of cadmium and spatial distribution of cadmium hydroxyapatite mineral in bone char

The 3-D matrix scale ion-exchange mechanism was explored for high-capacity cadmium (Cd) removal using bone chars (BC) chunks (1-2 mm) made at 500 °C (500BCE) and 700 °C (700BCE) in aqueous solutions. The Cd incorporation into the carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHAp) mineral of BC was examined using a set of synchrotron-based techniques. The Cd removal from solution and incorporation into mineral lattice were higher in 500BCE than 700BCE, and the diffusion depth was modulated by the initial Cd concentration and charring temperature. A higher carbonate level of BC, more pre-leached Ca sites, and external phosphorus input enhanced Cd removal. The 500BCE showed a higher CO32-/PO43- ratio and specific surface area (SSA) than the 700BCE, providing more vacant sites by dissolution of Ca2+. In situ observations revealed the refilling of sub-micron pore space in the mineral matrix because of Cd incorporation.The X-ray nanodiffraction (XND) analyses revealed that Cd was mainly removed from water by incorporation into the mineral lattice of 500BCE via ion exchange, rather than surface sorption and precipitation, and the mineral phase was transformed from hydroxyapatite (HAp) to cadmium hydroxyapatite (Cd-HAp). The Rietveld's refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data resolved up to 91% of the crystal displacement of Ca2+ by Cd2+. The A specific phase and stoichiometry of the new Cd-HAp mineral was dependent on the level of ion exchange. This mechanistic study confirmed that 3-D ion exchange was the most important path for heavy metal removal from aqueous solution and immobilization in BC mineral matrix, and put forward a novel and sustainable remediation strategy for Cd removal in wastewater and soil clean-up.

Oxidative torrefaction of microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana: Process optimization by central composite design

Microalgae are currently not viable as solid biofuels owing to their poor raw fuel properties. Torrefaction under oxidative media offers a cost-effective and energy-efficient process to address these drawbacks. A design of experiment was conducted using central composite design with three factors: temperature (200, 250, and 300 °C), time (10, 35, and 60 min), and O₂ concentration (3, 12, and 21 vol%). The responses were solid yield, energy yield, higher heating value, and onset temperatures at 50% and 90% carbon conversion determined from thermogravimetric analysis. Temperature and time significantly affected all responses, while O₂ concentration only affected higher heating value, energy yield and thermodegradation temperature at 90% conversion. Oxidative torrefaction of microalgae is recommended to be conducted at 200 °C, 10.6 min, 12% O₂ where the energy yield and enhancement factor are 98.73% and 1.08, respectively. It is also more reactive under an air environment compared to inert torrefaction conditions.

NiCo2O4-loaded sunflower husk-derived biochar as efficient peroxymonosulfate activator for tetracycline removal in water

In this study, biochar produced from sunflower seeds husk was activated through ZnCl₂ to support the NiCo₂O₄ nanoparticles (NiCo₂O₄@ZSF) in catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) toward tetracycline (TC) removal from aqueous solution. The good dispersion of NiCo₂O₄ NPs on the ZSF surface provided sufficient active sites and abundant functional groups for the adsorption and catalytic reaction. The NiCo₂O₄@ZSF activating PMS showed high removal efficiency up to 99% after 30 min under optimal condition ([NiCo₂O₄@ZSF] = 25 mg L^-1, [PMS] = 0.04 mM, [TC] = 0.02 mM and pH = 7). The catalyst also exhibited good adsorption performance with a maximum adsorption capacity of 322.58 mg g^-1. Sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-), superoxide radical (O₂•-), and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) played a decisive role in the NiCo₂O₄@ZSF/PMS system. In conclusion, our research elucidated the production of highly efficient carbon-based catalysts for environmental remediation, and also emphasized the potential application of NiCo₂O₄ doped biochar.

[Progress in research of deaths and disease burden of major chronic diseases caused by indoor and outdoor air pollution in China]

Health damage including chronic disease caused by air pollution have attracted increasing attention. With the acceleration of industrialization and urbanization, the emission of air pollutants has increased, and its association with chronic diseases has become a research trending topic. Cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disease are the major chronic diseases, causing about 86.6% of the total deaths in China. The prevention and control of chronic diseases, especially the etiologic prevention, is a major public health issue related to national health. This article summarizes the recent progress in research of association of indoor and outdoor air pollution with all-cause mortality, the deaths and disease burden of four major chronic diseases, i.e. cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disease, and puts forward suggestions for the reduction of the burden caused by chronic diseases due to air pollution to provide a theoretical foundation to revise air quality standards in China.

[Progress in research of relationship between metal or metalloid and persistent organic pollutants exposures and cardiovascular disease]

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality and healthy life expectancy loss, ranking first in causing the global burden of disease. In addition to the traditional CVD risk factors, such as hypertension and diabetes, environmental chemical pollutants may also play a role in the development of CVD. This paper summarizes the evidence regarding the relation of exposures to metal or metalloid and persistent organic pollutants with risk for CVD and introduces the research progress in the relation between the exposures to two environmental chemical pollutants and CVD risk. The study aims to provide scientific evidence for the effective prevention of CVD through the management of chemical pollutants in environment.

Modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanomembranes for dye removal from water - A review

Water contamination due to soluble synthetic dyes has serious concerns. Membrane-based wastewater treatments are emerging as a preferred choice for removing dyes from water. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanomembranes have gained much popularity due to their favorable features. This review explores the application of PVDF-based nanomembranes in synthetic dye removal through various treatments. Different fabrication methods to obtain high performance PVDF-based nanomembranes were discussed under surface coating and blending methods. Studies related to use of PVDF-based nanomembranes in adsorption, filtration, catalysis (oxidant activation, ozonation, Fenton process and photocatalysis) and membrane distillation have been elaborately discussed. Nanomaterials including metal compounds, metals, (synthetic/bio)polymers, metal organic frameworks, carbon materials and their composites were incorporated in PVDF membrane to enhance its performance. The advantages and limitations of incorporating nanomaterials in PVDF-based membranes have been highlighted. The influence of nanomaterials on the surface features, mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, crystallinity and catalytic ability of PVDF membrane was discussed. The conclusion of this literature review was given along with future research.

Microalgae bio-oil production by pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction: Mechanism and characteristics

Microalgae have great potential in producing energy-dense and valuable products via thermochemical processes. Therefore, producing alternative bio-oil to fossil fuel from microalgae has rapidly gained popularity due to its environmentally friendly process and elevated productivity. This current work aims to review comprehensively the microalgae bio-oil production using pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction. In addition, core mechanisms of pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction process for microalgae were scrutinized, showing that the presence of lipids and proteins could contribute to forming a large amount of compounds containing O and N elements in bio-oil. However, applying proper catalysts and advanced technologies for the two aforementioned approaches could improve the quality, heating value, and yield of microalgae bio-oil. In general, microalgae bio-oil produced under optimal conditions could have 46 MJ/kg heating value and 60% yield, indicating that microalgae bio-oil could become a promising alternative fuel for transportation and power generation.

A review of biowaste remediation and valorization for environmental sustainability: Artificial intelligence approach

Biowaste remediation and valorization for environmental sustainability focuses on prevention rather than cleanup of waste generation by applying the fundamental recovery concept through biowaste-to-bioenergy conversion systems - an appropriate approach in a circular bioeconomy. Biomass waste (biowaste) is discarded organic materials made of biomass (e.g., agriculture waste and algal residue). Biowaste is widely studied as one of the potential feedstocks in the biowaste valorization process due to its being abundantly available. In terms of practical implementations, feedstock variability from biowaste, conversion costs and supply chain stability prevent the widespread usage of bioenergy products. Biowaste remediation and valorization have used artificial intelligence (AI), a newly developed idea, to overcome these difficulties. This report analyzed 118 works that applied various AI algorithms to biowaste remediation and valorization-related research published between 2007 and 2022. Four common AI types are utilized in biowaste remediation and valorization: neural networks, Bayesian networks, decision tree, and multivariate regression. The neural network is the most frequent AI for prediction models, the Bayesian network is utilized for probabilistic graphical models, and the decision tree is trusted for providing tools to assist decision-making. Meanwhile, multivariate regression is employed to identify the relationship between experimental variables. AI is a remarkably effective tool in predicting data, which is reportedly better than the conventional approach owing to its characteristics of time-saving and high accuracy. The challenge and future work in biowaste remediation and valorization are briefly discussed to maximize the model's performance.

Spent coffee ground torrefaction for waste remediation and valorization

Spent coffee grounds (SCGs) are a noticeable waste that may cause environmental pollution problems if not treated appropriately. Torrefaction is a promising low-temperature carbonization technique to achieve waste remediation, recovery, and circular bioeconomy efficiently. This study aims to maximize lipids retained in thermally degraded SCGs, thereby upgrading their fuel quality to implement resource sustainability and availability. This work also analyzes the lipid contribution to biochar's calorific value under various carbonization temperatures and times. Torrefaction can retain 11-15 wt% lipids from SCG, but the lipid content decreases when the pyrolysis temperature is higher than 300 °C. Extracted lipid content consisting of fatty acids echoed the results of diesel adsorption capacity. The lipid content in the biochar from SCG torrefied at 300 °C for 30 min is 11.00 wt%, and its HHV is 28.16 MJ kg^-1. In this biochar, lipids contribute about 14.84% of the calorific value, and the other carbonized solid contributes 85.16%. On account of the higher lipid content in the biochar, it has the highest diesel adsorption amount per unit mass, with a value of 1.66 g g^-1. This value accounts for a 22.1% improvement compared to its untorrefied SCG. Accordingly, torrefaction can sufficiently remediate SCG-derived environmental pollution. The produced biochar can become a spilled oil adsorbent. Furthermore, oil-adsorbed biochar (oilchar) is a potential solid fuel. In summary, SCG torrefaction can simultaneously achieve pollution remediation, waste valorization, resource sustainability, and circular bioeconomy.

Fermentative production of astaxanthin from sorghum distillery residue by an indigenous Aurantiochytrium sp. CJ6 strain using a continuous-feeding fed-batch process

In this study, Aurantiochytrium sp. CJ6 was cultivated heterotrophically on a waste resource, sorghum distillery residue (SDR) hydrolysate without adding any nitrogen sources. Mild sulfuric acid treatment released sugars that supported the growth of CJ6. Optimal operating parameters (salinity, 2.5%; pH, 7.5; with light exposure) determined using batch cultivation attained biomass concentration and astaxanthin content of 3.72 g/L and 69.32 µg/g dry cell weight (DCW), respectively. Using continuous-feeding fed-batch (CF-FB) fermentation, the biomass concentration of CJ6 increased to 6.3 g/L with biomass productivity and sugar utilization rate of 0.286 mg/L/d and 1.26 g/L/d, respectively. Meanwhile, CJ6 obtained maximum astaxanthin content (93.9 µg/g DCW) and astaxanthin concentration (0.565 mg/L) after 20-day cultivation. Thus, the CF-FB fermentation strategy seems to have a high potential for the cultivation of thraustochytrids to produce the high-value product (astaxanthin) using SDR as the feedstock to achieve circular economy.

Plasmonic Sensing Assay for Long-Term Monitoring (PSALM) of Neurotransmitters in Urine

A liquid-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy assay termed PSALM is developed for the selective sensing of neurotransmitters (NTs) with a limit of detection below the physiological range of NT concentrations in urine. This assay is formed by quick and simple nanoparticle (NP) "mix-and-measure" protocols, in which Fe^III bridges NTs and gold NPs inside the sensing hotspots. Detection limits of NTs from PreNP PSALM are significantly lower than those of PostNP PSALM, when urine is pretreated by affinity separation. Optimized PSALM enables the long-term monitoring of NT variation in urine in conventional settings for the first time, allowing the development of NTs as predictive or correlative biomarkers for clinical diagnosis.

Applications of agricultural residue biochars to removal of toxic gases emitted from chemical plants: A review

Crop residues are representative agricultural waste materials, massively generated in the world. However, a large fraction of them is currently being wasted, though they have a high potential to be used as a value-added carbon-rich material. Also, the applications of carbon-rich materials from agricultural waste to industries can have economic benefit because waste-derived carbon materials are considered inexpensive waste materials. In this review, valorization methods for crop residues as carbon-rich materials (i.e., biochars) and their applications to industrial toxic gas removals are discussed. Applications of crop residue biochars to toxic gas removal can have significant environmental benefits and economic feasibility. As such, this review discussed the technical advantages of the use of crop residue biochars as adsorbents for hazardous gaseous pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHGs) stemmed from combustion of fossil fuels and the different refinery processes. Also, the practical benefits from the activation methods in line with the biochar properties were comprehensively discussed. The relationships between the physico-chemical properties of biochars and the removal mechanisms of gaseous pollutants (H₂S, SO₂, Hg⁰, and CO₂) on biochars were also highlighted in this review study. Porosity controls using physical and chemical activations along with the addition of specific functional groups and metals on biochars have significantly contributed to the enhancement of flue gas adsorption. The adsorption capacity of biochar for each toxic chemical was in the range of 46-76 mg g^-1 for H₂S, 40-182 mg g^-1 for SO₂, 80-952 μg g^-1 for Hg⁰, and 82-308 mg g^-1 CO₂, respectively. This helps to find suitable activation methods for adsorption of the target pollutants. In the last part, the benefits from the use of biochars and the research directions were prospectively provided to make crop residue biochars more practical materials in adsorption of pollutant gases.

Thermocatalytic conversion of wood-plastic composite over HZSM-5 catalysts

Air gasification of the Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC) was performed over Ni-loaded HZSM-5 catalysts to generate H₂-rich gas. Increasing SiO₂/Al₂O₃ ratio (SAR) of HZSM-5 adversely affected catalytic activity, where the highest gas yield (51.38 wt%) and H₂ selectivity (27.01 vol%) were acquired using 20 %Ni/HZSM-5(30) than those produced over 20 %Ni/HZSM-5(80) and 20 %Ni/HZSM-5(280). Reducing SAR was also favorably conducive to increasing the acyclic at the expense of cyclic compounds in oil products. These phenomena are attributed to enhanced acid strength and Ni dispersion of 20 %Ni/HZSM-5(30) catalyst. Moreover, catalytic activity in the terms of gas yield and H₂ selectivity enhanced with growing Ni loading to 20 %. Also, the addition of promoters (Cu and Ca) to 20 %Ni/HZSM-5(30) boosted the catalytic efficiency for H₂-rich gas generation. Raising temperature indicated a positive relevance with the gas yield and H₂ selectivity. WPC valorization via gasification technology would be an outstanding outlook in the terms of a waste-to-energy platform.

Hydrothermal and pyrolytic conversion of sunflower seed husk into novel porous biochar for efficient adsorption of tetracycline

In this study, sunflower seed husk biochar prepared by ZnCl₂-activated and hydrothermal carbonization (HZSF) was studied for its effectiveness in removing tetracycline (TC) from an aqueous solution. The physical and chemical properties of materials were characterized by different methods of surface analysis. The specific surface area of HZSF is significantly enhanced over 1200 times compared with non-modified biochar (HZSF: 1578.3 m²·g^-1, SF-700: 1.3 m²·g^-1), which has an enhancement effect on the TC adsorption capacity. The HZSF showed that the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models could properly characterize the adsorption processes. In the Langmuir isotherm model, HZSF exhibited effective adsorption performance with q_max of 673.0 mg·g^-1 at 298 K for 24 h. The possible mechanisms for the adsorption process were the monolayer, chemical adsorption, and the participation of strong intermolecular forces. In general, HZSF has the potential to be a useful adsorbent for the elimination of antibiotics from water-based solutions.

The Role of SCL Isoforms in Embryonic Hematopoiesis

Three waves of hematopoiesis occur in the mouse embryo. The primitive hematopoiesis appears as blood islands in the extra embryonic yolk sac at E7.5. The extra embryonic pro-definitive hematopoiesis launches in late E8 and the embryonic definitive one turns on at E10.5 indicated by the emergence of hemogenic endothelial cells on the inner wall of the extra embryonic arteries and the embryonic aorta. To study the roles of SCL protein isoforms in murine hematopoiesis, the SCL-large (SCL-L) isoform was selectively destroyed with the remaining SCL-small (SCL-S) isoform intact. It was demonstrated that SCL-S was specifically expressed in the hemogenic endothelial cells (HECs) and SCL-L was only detected in the dispersed cells after budding from HECs. The SCLΔ/Δ homozygous mutant embryos only survived to E10.5 with normal extra embryonic vessels and red blood cells. In wild-type mouse embryos, a layer of neatly aligned CD34+ and CD43+ cells appeared on the endothelial wall of the aorta of the E10.5 fetus. However, the cells at the same site expressed CD31 rather than CD34 and/or CD43 in the E10.5 SCLΔ/Δ embryo, indicating that only the endothelial lineage was developed. These results reveal that the SCL-S is sufficient to sustain the primitive hematopoiesis and SCL-L is necessary to launch the definitive hematopoiesis.

Environmental benefits from the use of CO2 in the thermal disposal of cigarette butts

As the global consumption of cigarettes has increased, the massive generation of cigarette butts (CBs) has led to critical environmental and health problems. Landfilling or incineration of CBs has been conventionally carried out, but such disposal protocols have suffered from the potential risks of the unwanted/uncontrolled release of leachates, carcinogens, and toxic chemicals into all environmental media. Thus, this study focuses on developing an environmentally dependable method for CB disposal. Littered CBs from filtered/electronic cigarettes were valorized into syngas (H₂/CO). To seek a greener approach for the valorization of CBs, CO₂ was intentionally considered as a reaction intermediate. Prior to multiple pyrolysis studies, the toxic chemicals in the CBs were qualitatively determined. This study experimentally proved that the toxic chemicals in CBs were detoxified/valorized into syngas. Furthermore, this work demonstrated that CO₂ was effective in thermally destroying toxic chemicals in CBs via a gas-phase reaction. The reaction features and CO₂ synergistically enhance syngas production. With the use of a supported Ni catalyst and CO₂, syngas production from the catalytic pyrolysis of CBs was greatly enhanced (approximately 4 times). Finally, the gas-phase reaction by CO₂ was reliably maintained owing to the synergistic mechanistic/reaction feature of CO₂ for coke formation prevention on the catalyst surface.

Microalgae gasification over Ni loaded perovskites for enhanced biohydrogen generation

Steam gasification of microalgae upon perovskite oxide-supported nickel (Ni) catalysts was carried out for H₂-rich gas production. Ni-perovskite oxide catalysts with partial substitution of B in perovskite structures (Ni/CaZrO₃, Ni/Ca(Zr_0.8Ti_0.2)O₃, and Ni/Ca(Zr_0.6Ti_0.4)O₃) were synthesized and compared with those of the Ni/Al₂O₃ catalyst. The perovskite oxide supports improved Ni dispersion by reducing the particle size and strengthening the Ni-support interaction. Higher gas yields and H₂ selectivity were obtained using Ni-perovskite oxide catalysts rather than Ni/Al₂O₃. In particular, Ni/Ca(Zr_0.8Ti_0.2)O₃ showed the highest activity and selectivity for H₂ production because of the synergetic effect of metallic Ni and elements present in the perovskite structures caused by high catalytic activity coupled with enhanced oxygen mobility. Moreover, increasing the temperature promoted the yield of gas and H₂ content. Overall, considering the outstanding advantages of perovskite oxides as supports for Ni catalysts is a promising prospect for H₂ production via gasification technology.

Phosphoric acid-activated biochar derived from sunflower seed husk: Selective antibiotic adsorption behavior and mechanism

In recent years, the unnecessary overuse of antibiotics has increased globally, resulting in antibiotic contamination of water, which has become a significant environmental concern. This study aims to examine the adsorption behavior of antibiotics (Tetracycline TC, Ciprofloxacin CIP, Ibuprofen IBP, and Sulfamethoxazole SMX) onto H₃PO₄-activated sunflower seed husk biochar (PSF). The results demonstrated that H₃PO₄ could enhance the specific surface area (378.8 m²/g) and create a mesoporous structure of biochar. The adsorption mechanism was investigated using kinetic models, isotherms, and thermodynamics. The maximum adsorption capacities (q_max) of TC, CIP, SMX, and IBP are 429.3, 361.6, 251.3, and 251.1 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of antibiotics on PSF was governed by complex mechanisms, including chemisorption, external diffusion, and intraparticle diffusion. This research provides an environmentally friendly method for utilizing one of the agricultural wastes for the removal of a variety of antibiotics from the aquatic environment.

Progressive yield of nickel cobaltite nanocubes for visible light utilization and degrading activities of methyl orange dye pollutant

In this study, pure cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) as well as nickel cobaltite (NiCo₂O₄) were investigated with their capacity of degradation efficiency for textile dyes like methyl orange (MO) employing visible light irradiation. Two variable concentrations of nickel cobaltite (NiCo₂O₄) with 75:25 and 50:50 wt ratios along with the pure metal oxides were synthesized by thermal decomposition method and analyzed by various sophisticated instruments. Initially, the structural characteristics described the fine crystalline nature of NiCo₂O₄ and also exhibits reduced size than the pure component material (Co₃O₄). Besides, NiCo₂O₄ catalysts represented nano cubic shaped particles, and also their coordinating functional groups were evaluated. Further, the absorption wavelength confirms the two band positions of NiCo₂O₄ which leads to promote visible light absorption, and degrading efficiency of about 47.5% for NiCo₂O₄ (75:25) sample compared with NiCo₂O₄ (50:50) which produced only 26.3% degradation. This higher efficiency of the former was due to high crystallinity and interfacial charge transfer of combined Ni²⁺, Ni³⁺, Co²⁺ and Co³⁺ redox couples. This consecutively produces effective OH radicals that brought the degradation effectively under visible light. The recycling capacity up to 5 repeated cycles has been studied with the NiCo₂O₄ (75:25) and therefore the catalyst can further be used in other dye degradation.

Removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions by high performance capacitive deionization process using biochar derived from Sargassum hemiphyllum

Capacitive deionization (CDI) has been considered as an efficient, energy-saving and environmental friendly technology for water treatment. For the practical application of CDI, high-performance electrode materials beyond standard activated carbon should be developed. In this study, biochar derived from brown algae Sargassum hemiphyllum prepared by pyrolysis at 300-700 °C and then used as the CDI electrode to remove Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. According to the findings, the optimal pyrolysis temperature was 700 °C, and the electrosorption capacity of BAB700 was 75-120 mg·g-1 at an applied voltage of 1.2 V across wide range of initial pH, temperatures and ion types. Moreover, BAB700 also exhibited outstanding ability to electrosorb other heavy metals (Zn(II), Ni(II), and Cd(II)). In addition, the BAB700 retained the Cu(II) removal efficiency of 70 % in 10 cycles. Cu(II) in actual water is completely eliminated with great reproducibility, resulting in a high degree of applicability for water treatment.

Multi-objective operation optimization of spent coffee ground torrefaction for carbon-neutral biochar production

Many energy-intensive processes are employed to enhance biomass fuel properties to overcome the difficulties in utilizing biomass as fuel. Therefore, energy conservation during these processes is crucial for realizing a circular bioeconomy. This study develops a newly devised method to evaluate SCG biochars' higher heating value (HHV) and predict moisture content from power consumption. It is found that the increasing rates of HHV immediately follow decreases in power consumption, which could be used to determine the pretreatment time for energy conservation. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) maximizes SCG biochar's HHV while minimizing energy consumption. The results show that producing SCG biochar with 23.98 MJ∙kg^-1 HHV requires 20.042 MJ∙kg^-1, using a torrefaction temperature of 244 °C and torrefaction time of 27 min and 43 sec. Every kilogram of biochar with an energy yield of 85.93 % is estimated to cost NT$ 12.21.

Design of biorefineries towards carbon neutrality: A critical review

The increase in worldwide demand for energy is driven by the rapid increase in population and exponential economic development. This resulted in the fast depletion of fossil fuel supplies and unprecedented levels of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. To valorize biomass into different bioproducts, one of the popular and carbon-neutral alternatives is biorefineries. This system is an appropriate technology in the circular economy model. Various research highlighted the role of biorefineries as a centerpiece in the carbon-neutral ecosystem of technologies of the circular economy model. To fully realize this, various improvements and challenges need to be addressed. This paper presents a critical and timely review of the challenges and future direction of biorefineries as an alternative carbon-neutral energy source.

Machine learning and statistical analysis for biomass torrefaction: A review

Torrefaction is a remarkable technology in biomass-to-energy. However, biomass has several disadvantages, including hydrophilic properties, higher moisture, lower heating value, and heterogeneous properties. Many conventional approaches, such as kinetic analysis, process modeling, and computational fluid dynamics, have been used to explain torrefaction performance and characteristics. However, they may be insufficient in actual applications because of providing only some specific solutions. Machine learning (ML) and statistical approaches are powerful tools for analyzing and predicting torrefaction outcomes and even optimizing the thermal process for its utilization. This state-of-the-art review aims to present ML-assisted torrefaction. Artificial neural networks, multivariate adaptive regression splines, decision tree, support vector machine, and other methods in the literature are discussed. Statistical approaches (SAs) for torrefaction, including Taguchi, response surface methodology, and analysis of variance, are also reviewed. Overall, this review has provided valuable insights into torrefaction optimization, which is conducive to biomass upgrading for achieving net zero.

Thermochemical conversion of large-size woody biomass for carbon neutrality: Principles, applications, and issues

Large-size woody biomass is a valuable renewable resource to replace fossil fuels in biorefinery processes. The preprocessing of wood chips and briquettes is challenging to manage, especially in an industrial setting, as it generates a significant amount of dust and noise and occasionally causes unexpected accidents. As a result, a substantial amount of resources, energy, labor, and space are needed. The thermochemical conversion behavior of large-size woody biomass was studied to reduce energy consumption for chipping. Large-size wood was 1.5 m in length, 0.1 m in breadth, and stacked 90 cm in height. This strategy has many benefits, including increased effectiveness and reduced CO₂ emissions. The target of this paper presents the thermochemical process, and large-size wood was chosen because it provides high-quality product gas while reducing the preprocessing fuel cost. This review examines the benefits of thermochemical conversion technologies for assessing the likelihood of carbon neutrality.
