Abstract
Herein we report on an analytical study of dry‐shredded lithium‐ion battery (LIB) materials with unknown composition. Samples from an industrial recycling process were analyzed concerning the elemental composition and (organic) compound speciation. Deep understanding of the base material for LIB recycling was obtained by identification and analysis of transition metal stoichiometry, current collector metals, base electrolyte and electrolyte additive residues, aging marker molecules and polymer binder fingerprints. For reversed engineering purposes, the main electrode and electrolyte chemistries were traced back to pristine materials. Furthermore, possible lifetime application and accompanied aging was evaluated based on target analysis on characteristic molecules described in literature. With this, the reported analytics provided precious information for value estimation of the undefined spent batteries and enabled tailored recycling process deliberations. The comprehensive feedstock characterization shown in this work paves the way for targeted process control in LIB recycling processes.

Abstract
1,3-Propane sultone (1,3-PS) is a directly alkylating, genotoxic and carcinogenic substance. In rats, 1,3-PS induces local and systemic tumors at multiple sites, including the mammary gland, intestine, hematopoietic system, kidneys, and the central nervous system (CNS), especially in the form of gliomas. In one particular company, 1,3-PS had been manufactured in limited amounts in the 1950s and 1960s, and for a few purposes until the 1970s. The number of individuals having been in contact with the compound occupationally comprised 55 in total. Data were obtained from this group with an open question of legal compensation regarding an occupational disease. Particular emphasis was placed on malignancies occurring among the occupationally exposed persons. As cerebral gliomas are a major type of tumor induced by 1,3-PS experimentally, the occurrence of two glioblastomas among the previously exposed persons was significant. Three intestinal malignancies were recorded within the cases observed. It is also noteworthy that there was one case of a duodenal carcinoma, which is normally a rare human malignancy. Two hematopoietic/lymphatic malignancies were observed, and there was one case of a renal cell carcinoma. The types of malignancies within a group of only 55 exposed persons are surprisingly consistent with the results from rodent studies. Data clearly indicate that 1,3-PS is carcinogenic in humans. Evidence indicates that 12 cases with various neoplasms were legally compensated within the period of 1985-2010 as an occupational disease, based on the "opening clause" of § 9 (2) SGB VII of legislation in Germany.

Abstract
1,3-Propane sultone is directly alkylating, genotoxic and carcinogenic. In rats, it induces local and systemic tumours at multiple target sites. Preponderant systemic tumours occur at the central nervous system, especially gliomas. Other localisations include the mammary gland, the intestine, the haematopoietic system and the kidneys. In the German chemical industry, 1,3-propane sultone had been manufactured and used in limited amounts in the 1950s and 1960s, and for a very few purposes until the 1970s. The number of persons in contact with the compound is unknown but was limited. The medical history of some cases could be traced. As cerebral gliomas are the main systemic tumours induced by 1,3-propane sultone experimentally, the occurrence of a glioblastoma among previously exposed persons appears conspicuous. Three intestinal malignancies were recorded among the cases observed. Also noteworthy is one case of a duodenal carcinoma, normally a rare human malignancy. Two haematopoietic/lymphatic malignancies of different nature have been observed, and there was one case of a renal cell carcinoma. These malignancies observed within a group of persons exposed to 1,3-propane sultone appear surprisingly consistent with the expectations from the available animal studies. The present case studies point to long latency times (up to 30-40 years or more) after limited periods of past exposure.

Abstract
Propane sultone (PS) injected i.p. 24 or more hours before Friend leukemia virus increased the incidence of lymphoma in SJL/J mice and at a higher dose increased the incidence of erythroleukemia in B10SJF1 mice. PS at the same time also decreased hematopoietic stem cell clonogenicity.

Abstract
The quantitative relationship between carcinogenicity in rodents and mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium was examined, by using 10 monofunctional alkylating agents, including N-nitrosamides, alkyl methanesulfonates, epoxides, beta-propiolactone and 1,3-propane sultone. The compounds were assayed for mutagenicity in two S. typhimurium strains (TA1535 and TA100) and in plate and liquid assays. The mutagenic activity of the agents was compared with their alkylating activity towards 4-(4'-nitrobenzyl)pyridine and with their half-lives (solvolysis constants) in an aqueous medium. No correlations between these variables were found, nor was mutagenic activity correlated with estimates of carcinogenicity in rodents. There was a positive relationship between carcinogenicity and the initial ratios of 7-:O6-alkylguanine formed or expected after their reaction with double-stranded DNA in vitro. The results suggest that alkylation of guanine at position O6 (or at other O atoms of DNA bases) may be a critical DNA-base modification that determines the overall carcinogenicity of these alkylating agents in rodents.

Abstract
The carcinogenic effects of limited and repeated skin applications of propane sultone were investigated in three strains of mice, CF1, C3H and CBah (a hairless strain). Propane sultone was shown to be carcinogenic when given as a single application of a 25% w/v solution in toluene and also following twice weekly application of a 2.5% w/v solution for up to 58 weeks. More limited exposure to 2.5% w/v solutions of propane sultone resulted in a few skin tumours, although the incidences were not statistically significant. Most neoplasms were papillomas or carcinomas, although a small number of mesenchymal tumours of dermal origin also developed. No skin neoplasms were found in any control mice. The skin application of propane sultone was associated with a statistically significant increase in the incidence of systematic neoplasia in CFl and C3H mice. The exposed CFl mice had a higher incidence of neoplasms of lymphoreticular and lung origin, while female C3H mice showed a higher incidence of mammary gland and uterine tumours. In mice exposed to beta-propiolactone as a positive control, neoplasms developed at the site of application but, there was no evidence of increased systemic neoplasis in contrast to the findings with ptopane sultone.

Abstract
To determine correlations between the biological action pattern and chemical reactivity of alkylating agents, the rate constants for reactions of 1,3-propane sultone and 1,4-butane sultone with a series of nucleophiles at 37 degrees C have been determined. Previously published data on the mutagenicity of the two sultones and of some alkyl methanesulfonates and dialkyl sulfates towards Schizosaccharomyces pombe have been used in the evaluation of the dependence of mutagenic effectiveness on chemical reactivity. It is of interest to note that the mutagenic effectiveness of the two sultones, if expressed per alkylating event at a certain low nucleophilicity is the same as that of e.g. methyl methanesulfonate and ethyl methanesulfonate.
