Thermodynamic analysis of nonelectrolyte sorption in plant cuticles: The effects of concentration and temperature on sorption of 4-nitrophenol

Foliar nitrogen uptake in broadleaf evergreen Mediterranean forests: Fertilisation experiment with labelled nitrogen

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition in Mediterranean sclerophyllous forests of Holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia, Q. ilex) in Spain often exceeds empirical critical loads established for ecosystem conservation. There are still uncertainties on the capacity of canopy retention and uptake of the atmospheric N deposited of these forests. Studying and analysing all the forest nitrogen-cycle processes is essential to understand the potential effect of N deposition in these ecosystems. This study conducted a year-long short-term fertilisation experiment with labelled ammonium (15N-NH4) and nitrate (15N-NO3) to estimate foliar N absorption rates and assess the influence of leaf phenology and meteorological seasonal variations. Fertilising solutions were prepared to simulate low and high wet N deposition concentration, based on data reported from previous studies. Additionally, ecophysiological and meteorological measurements were collected to explore potential relationships between absorption rates, plant activity, and weather conditions. The results showed that Holm oak leaves were able to absorb both oxidised and reduced N compounds, with higher rates of NH4+ absorption. N recovery of both NH4+ and NO3- was higher in the low concentration treatments, suggesting reduced effectiveness of absorption as concentration increases. Foliar absorption rates were leaf-age dependent, with the highest values observed in young developing leaves. Foliar uptake showed seasonal changes with a clear reduction during the summer, linked to drought and dry weather conditions, and showing also smaller leaf net assimilation and stomatal conductance. During the rest of the year, foliar N absorption was not clearly associated to plant physiological activity but with environmental conditions. Our findings suggest that Holm oak canopies could absorb an important part of the incoming N deposition, but this process is compound, season and leaf phenology dependent. Further research is therefore needed to better understand and model this part of the N cycle.

Investigating the Effects of Temperature, Relative Humidity, Leaf Collection Date, and Foliar Penetration on Leaf-Air Partitioning of Chlorpyrifos

Leaf-air partition coefficient (K_leaf-air) values are needed to understand and predict pesticide volatilization and persistence in agroecosystems. The objectives of this work were to measure K_leaf-air values and foliar penetration for the insecticide chlorpyrifos (as an active ingredient alone and in a pesticide formulation) on alfalfa (lucerne) leaves at a range of temperatures and relative humidities and when using leaves collected in different summer months. K_leaf-air values were measured using a solid-phase fugacity meter. A portion of the leaves were also used for foliar penetration experiments. K_leaf-air values for chlorpyrifos as an active ingredient alone decreased with temperature, while the effects of temperature on chlorpyrifos in the formulation were negligible. No correlations between K_leaf-air values and relative humidity were observed. Foliar penetration increased with temperature for chlorpyrifos both as an active ingredient and in the formulation. Increasing foliar penetration with temperature is attributed to increasing diffusion into inner leaf layers. Both volatilization and foliar penetration affect the measured K_leaf-air values, so understanding the link between these processes is necessary to predict K_leaf-air values. The leaf collection date had a substantial effect on the measured K_leaf-air values, highlighting the need for a better understanding of the role of leaf properties on K_leaf-air.

Sorption and interaction of the flavonoid naringenin on tomato fruit cuticles

The flavonoid naringenin accumulates in tomato fruit epidermis during ripening. The sorption of this flavonoid to enzymatically isolated cuticles of Solanum lycopersicum was studied as a function of the temperature and naringenin concentration at two stages of fruit growth. The selected stages were mature green, without flavonoids in the cuticle, and ripe tomato, with significant amounts of flavonoids in the cuticle. Sorption isotherms showed different behaviors that could be explained in terms of different affinities of the sorbed flavonoid for the cuticular matrix. The partition coefficient of naringenin in the system cuticle/water solution was a function of temperature and concentration. Changes in the free energy, enthalpy, and entropy for the phase transfer of naringenin to cuticle were also calculated, indicating the existence of naringenin-naringenin interactions replacing naringenin-cuticular matrix interactions at high concentrations with the final result of solid precipitations in the form of clusters within the cutin matrix.

Effect of temperature on cuticular transpiration of isolated cuticular membranes and leaf discs

Cuticular transpiration was measured in the temperature range between 10 degrees C and 55 degrees C using tritiated water and five species (Vinca major L., Prunus laurocerasus L., Forsythia intermedia L., Citrus aurantium L., and Hedera helix L.). Cuticular water permeabilities measured with isolated cuticular membranes were not different from cuticular water permeabilities measured with leaf discs. Depending on the species cuticular water permeabilities increased by factors between 12 (V. major) to 264 (H. helix) when temperature was increased from 10 degrees C to 55 degrees C. Arrhenius plots (lnP versus 1/T) of all investigated species were characterized by phase transitions occurring in the temperature range of 30-39 degrees C. Activation energies for water permeability across plant cuticles below and above the midpoint of phase transition were calculated from Arrhenius plots. Depending on the species they varied between 26 (F. intermedia) to 61 kJ mol(-1) (H. helix) below the phase transition and from 67 (V. major) to 122 kJ mol(-1) (F. intermedia) above the phase transition. Since the occurrence of phase transitions always lead to significantly increased rates of cuticular transpiration it is argued that temperatures higher than 35 degrees C caused structural defects to the transport-limiting barrier of the plant cuticles of all species investigated.
