Juvenile Xanthogranuloma: Presenting as an Isolated Renal Involvement

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is a histiocytic disorder of childhood that mostly affects the skin although extracutaneous and visceral manifestations are well documented in English literature. The renal involvement is less commonly documented as a manifestation of xanthogranuloma and the reported cases occur in conjunction with cutaneous xanthogranuloma, especially in association with multiple skin lesions. We present a case of isolated renal JXG presenting as a renal mass with perinephric soft tissue and muscle involvement but without any cutaneous manifestation. This is the first case report of renal JXG without cutaneous involvement, to the best of our knowledge.

Multi-modality imaging findings of disseminated juvenile xanthogranuloma with renal involvement in an infant

Juvenile xanthogranuloma is a non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis commonly presenting as a solitary cutaneous lesion. A small subset of patients have visceral involvement. Renal involvement is rare. Several case reports have highlighted solitary extracutaneous lesions. Few reports describe imaging findings in multiple visceral organs. We describe a unique case of disseminated JXG with involvement of the kidney as well as other visceral organs including the liver, spleen and lungs.

Successful therapy of systemic xanthogranuloma in a child

Systemic juvenile xanthogranuloma is a rare disease in children. A 10-year-old boy who showed renal, pulmonary, and liver involvement is reported. He had pulmonary invasion, renal mass, and nodular liver lesions but no bone involvement. The diagnosis was confirmed by renal biopsy, which revealed foamy, lipid-laden macrophages with positive CD68, but negative CD1a and S-100. The patient was treated with pulse high-dose methylprednisolone (10 mg/kg/d for 3 d for 6 courses). On 1-year follow-up period after 6 courses therapy was resulted in remarkable regression in renal and liver lesions.

Update on juvenile xanthogranuloma: unusual cutaneous and systemic variants

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is a well-recognized benign disorder of infancy and early childhood characterized by yellowish cutaneous nodules that spontaneously regress over months to years. In the vast majority of children, JXG is limited to the skin and requires no treatment. Over the past two decades, unusual cutaneous and systemic forms of JXG have been increasingly reported. JXGs have been discovered, usually unexpectedly, in every organ system of the body. Correct diagnosis is crucial to prevent unnecessary invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Unusual clinical and histological variants of JXG often require immunohistochemical studies and/or electron microscopy to establish the diagnosis. Nonlipidized, giant, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and clustered JXG are but some of the variants that are discussed in this article. The immunohistochemistry of JXG, current nosology, and hypotheses regarding the origins of JXG are also reviewed.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is a benign, self-healing disorder characterized by solitary or multiple yellow-red nodules on the skin and, occasionally, in other organs. It is predominantly a disease of infancy or early childhood, although adults may also be affected. Histologically, JXG represents an accumulation of histiocytes lacking Birbeck granules (non-Langerhans cells), which can be differentiated from Langerhans cells by specific staining techniques. Affected persons have normal lipid metabolism. JXG is therefore classified as a normolipemic non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The patient's general health is not impaired and, in the absence of associated conditions, the prognosis is excellent. Diagnosis is readily made in typical cases, but may be more difficult in unusual variants.

Case report: juvenile xanthogranuloma with pulmonary, subcutaneous and hepatic involvement

Juvenile xanthogranuloma is a rare benign condition in which lesions are usually confined to the skin. We describe a case with additional pulmonary, hepatic and subcutaneous lesions.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma with extracutaneous lesions

The purpose of this article is to present a case of juvenile xanthogranuloma with pulmonary, retroperitoneal and splenic involvement. The similar echographic pattern of the cutaneous and visceral lesions was very helpful in order to suggest the correct diagnosis.
