Population dynamics of some phytophagous mites and their predators on goldenrodSolidago altissima L

Development and reproduction of five Tetranychus species (Acari: Tetranychidae): Do they all have the potential to become major pests?

The objective of this study was to investigate whether four spider mite species, Tetranychus ludeni, T. phaselus, T. piercei and T. truncatus, currently with insignificant economic impact, have the potential to achieve the same status as T. urticae, which until now has been considered as the most serious tetranychid pest species in orchards and greenhouses. We investigated the effect of temperature on development, survival and oviposition at 11 constant temperatures ranging from 15 to 40 °C at intervals of 2.5 °C and estimated demographic parameters, such as the intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), for these five species at five constant temperatures. Developmental time from egg to adult (female and male) decreased with increasing temperature from 15 to 32.5 °C in all five species, but increased slightly at 35 °C or higher, especially in T. ludeni and T. urticae. Using linear and non-linear developmental rate models, the lower thermal thresholds for egg-to-adult (female and male) and egg-to-egg development were found to range from 9.8 to 11.7 and from 9.8 to 11.4 °C, respectively. The intrinsic optimal temperature (TΦ) ranged from 18.0 to 27.4 °C for egg-to-female adult and from 23.9 to 27.2 °C for egg-to-egg development. The oviposition period and adult longevity were strongly affected by temperature. The rm-values increased with increasing temperature from 15 to 30 or 35 °C in all five species. The highest rm-values at each temperature were 0.114 day(-1) at 15 °C for T. ludeni, 0.199 day(-1) at 20 °C for T. urticae, 0.314 day(-1) at 25 °C for T. ludeni, 0.451 day(-1) at 30 °C for T. ludeni and 0.433 day(-1) at 35 °C for T. truncatus. The total fecundity, net reproductive rate (R0) and rm of T. ludeni were higher than those of T. urticae at all temperatures. T. piercei and T. truncatus showed higher rm-values at 30 and 35 °C than T. urticae. The results indicate that the former three species are better adapted to hot weather than T. urticae and have a high potential to become serious pests.

Does the number of diapausing eggs laid on bark affect the population dynamics of the spider mite Panonychus mori?

We studied the relationship between number of diapausing eggs produced by the spider mite Panonychus mori and the subsequent population trend for a period of 3 years. Panonychus mori showed a single population density peak on its host plant moonseed, Cocculus trilobus. The position and height of this peak were correlated with the density of diapausing eggs around the moonseed leaf buds produced the winter before. In 1994 the density of diapausing eggs measured in February was 4.3/bud, which was 6-14 times higher than the density of diapausing eggs for the same period in 1995 (0.3/bud) and 1996 (0.7/bud). The subsequent population density peak in 1994 occurred in mid June and was about 2.5 times higher than the peaks in 1995 and 1996, which both occurred early September. Thus, the present study showed a positive correlation between the density of diapausing eggs on the host plant and the start and the extend of the population increase the next growing season. Predators associated with the spider mite population were phytoseiid mites, especially Amblyseius eharai was well synchronized with the spider mite density in 1994. Field observations revealed that P. mori produced diapausing eggs in response to short photoperiod in early October each year, which corresponded with the timing predicted by the critical photoperiod around 13 h at 18 degrees C, as assessed in laboratory trials. Diapause ended by early April when egg hatchability attained about 50% and eggs took 9 days to hatch at 25 degrees C and a 16L:8D photoperiod. Hatching in early April was twice faster than in late February.

Demography of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch

A simple life table model was constructed for Tetranychus urticae in which daily survivorship of eggs and motil stages, fecundity, and development time was altered to assess the impact of each parameter on the intrinsic rate of increase. r. Interpretation of the trade-offs focused on management considerations.A second aspect of the study concerned age and stage structure in mite populations including the time path of convergence to a stable age distribution and the effect of changes in birth and death rates on the age profile. The stable stage distributions of 7 tetranychid mite species were computed using 25 separate life tables. In spite of the wide range of r-values induced by different experimental conditions, all of the stage distributions were quite similar averaging roughly 66% eggs, 26% immatures, and 8% adults. Several population studies were cited which reported stage distributions of growing mite populations. The empirical evidence suggested that natural mite populations are often quite near this stable distribution.A practical problem involving the extent to which hormoligosis (insecticide stimulation) affects mite population growth rate was addressed using the life table model and laboratory data from controlled studies. The findings suggested that mite populations treated with insecticide may attain a 1.4- to a 4.2-fold difference in population size relative to an untreated population after 2 generations and over a 1,300-fold potential difference after 10 generations.
