Identification and bioassay of kairomones forHelicoverpa zea

Hexane extracts of leaves of 307 accessions from 73 host plant species ofHelicoverpa zea were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and used forH. zea oviposition and neonate larvae orientation bioassays. The gas chromatographic (GC) retention times of compounds statistically associated with behavioral activity were identified by correlation of GC peak area with oviposition and larval orientation preferences. Although taxonomically diverse in their origin, compounds for study were purified from extracts of species of the genusLycopersicon, due to their relative abundance. The structures of eight long-chain alkanes associated with oviposition preference were assigned by mass spectrometry, and the structures of five similarly associated organic acids and a terpenoid alkene were identified by(1)H and(13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The structures of a number of other phytochemicals from the plant leaves were identified for comparative purposes, including a previously unknown terpene, 7-epizingiberene. Bioassays were performed on the isolated acids and on the alkane wax fractions of severalLycopersicon species, and significant differences were found in oviposition stimulation for both classes of compounds. Of the hundreds of compounds found in the extracts, none were observed to act as oviposition deterrents. The results of these bioassays may be useful in explaining the broad host range ofH. zea, as well as the process and evolution of host plant selection for oviposition.

Effect of whitefly parasitoids on the cuticular lipid composition of Bemisia argentifolii (Homoptera: aleyrodidae) nymphs

Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of whitefly parasitoids on the cuticular lipid composition of the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring [=sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), Biotype B] nymphs. The cuticular lipids of B. argentifolii nymphs that had been attacked by parasitic wasps, either Eretmocerus mundus Mercet or Encarsia pergandiella Howard, were characterized by capillary gas chromatography and CGC-mass spectrometry and the results compared with the cuticular lipids of unparasitized nymphs. Previous studies with B. argentifolii nymphs had shown that wax esters were the major components of the cuticular lipids with lesser amounts of hydrocarbons, long-chain aldehydes, and long-chain alcohols. No appreciable changes in lipid composition were observed for the cuticular lipids of E. pergandiella-parasitized nymphs as compared to unparasitized controls. However, the cuticular lipids from nymphs parasitized by E. mundus contained measurable quantities of two additional components in their hydrocarbon fraction. Analyses and comparisons with an authentic standard indicated that the two hydrocarbons were the even-numbered chain length methyl-branched alkanes, 2-methyltriacontane and 2-methyldotriacontane. The occurrences and possible functions of 2-methylalkanes as cuticular lipid components of insects are discussed and specifically, in regard to host recognition, acceptance, and discrimination by parasitoids. Cuticular lipids of insects: VIII. Alkanes of the Mormon cricket Anabrus simplex

The cuticular hydrocarbons of the Mormon cricket, Anabrus simplex, are all saturated and consist of n-alkanes (29+%), 3-methylalkanes (12%), internally branched monomethylalkanes (26+%), and dimethylalkanes (28+%). The principal n-alkane is the C29 component, with a range from C23 to C33. The 3-methylalkanes range from C28 to C32, and the internally branched monomethyl- and dimethylalkanes range from C29 to C39. When the branched alkanes of A. simplex are compared to those from other insects in the order Orthoptera, interesting patterns of methyl branching are observed.
