EPR dosimetry with tooth enamel: A review

When tooth enamel is exposed to ionizing radiation, radicals are formed, which can be detected using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques. EPR dosimetry using tooth enamel is based on the (presumed) correlation between the intensity or amplitude of some of the radiation-induced signals with the dose absorbed in the enamel. In the present paper a critical review is given of this widely applied dosimetric method. The first part of the paper is fairly fundamental and deals with the main properties of tooth enamel and some of its model systems (e.g., synthetic apatites). Considerable attention is also paid to the numerous radiation-induced and native EPR signals and the radicals responsible for them. The relevant methods for EPR detection, identification and spectrum analyzing are reviewed from a general point of view. Finally, the needs for solid-state modelling and studies of the linearity of the dose response are investigated. The second part is devoted to the practical implementation of EPR dosimetry using enamel. It concerns specific problems of preparation of samples, their irradiation and spectrum acquisition. It also describes how the dosimetric signal intensity and dose can be retrieved from the EPR spectra. Special attention is paid to the energy dependence of the EPR response and to sources of uncertainties. Results of and problems encountered in international intercomparisons and epidemiological studies are also dealt with. In the final section the future of EPR dosimetry with tooth enamel is analyzed.

EPR properties of intact and deproteinated dentin

The effect of sample preparation on dentin electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra was investigated. The analysis was performed on dentin samples prepared by pure mechanical treatment or by an alkaline deproteination method. It was observed that (1) mechanical treatment induces both stable and transient signals, depending on the specific mechanical operation applied; and (2) sodium hydroxide deproteination removes the native signal, but at the same time introduces new confounding signals in the EPR spectrum. Also, it increases the radiation sensitivity of dentin. These findings suggest that attention must be paid to dentin sample preparation.

A comparative EPR, infrared and Raman study of natural and deproteinated tooth enamel and dentin

The aim of the present work was to investigate how the native signal observed in the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum of tooth enamel and dentin is associated with the organic content of the two tissues. This was achieved by comparing the EPR native signal and the optical bands (Raman and infrared, IR) associated with organic components of tooth enamel and dentin, in natural and deproteinated samples. The main results were: (a) in natural samples, the organic optical bands are more intense in dentin than in enamel, in contrast with the EPR native signal which shows similar intensity in the two tissues; (b) after deproteination, the optical organic bands are completely suppressed in both dentin and enamel, while the EPR native signal is eliminated only in dentin. It is suggested that the IR and Raman organic bands are originated in the bulk of the organic matrix, while the paramagnetic centres associated with the EPR native signal are located in the organic-mineral interface.

The Chernobyl accident: EPR dosimetry on dental enamel of children

The radiation dose on tooth enamel of children living close to Chernobyl has been evaluated by EPR. The sample preparation was reduced to a minimum of mechanical steps to remove a piece of enamel. A standard X-ray tube at low energy was used for additive irradiation. The filtration effect of facial soft tissue was taken into account. The radiation dose for a group of teeth slightly exceeds the annual dose, whereas for another group the dose very much exceeds the annual dose. Since the higher dose is found in teeth whose enamel have much lower EPR sensitivity to the radiation, it can be suggested that for these teeth the native signal could alter the evaluation of the smaller radiation signal.

Current issues on EPR dose reconstruction in tooth enamel

This paper focuses on the opportunities to gain risk assessment information from populations exposed to ionizing radiation. Details are presented on the scale of the nuclear events in several areas within the former Soviet Union. An overview of the issues associated with dose reconstruction by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is given. Principles and outline of the EPR tooth enamel dose assessment are described. Technical details, the latest achievements and the problems of each procedural step are analyzed. In addition, the present accuracy of the EPR dose reconstruction, its problems and cost are discussed.

Aspects of retrospective ESR dosimetry (invited paper)

A review is given on the major technological and methodological aspects of retrospective ESR dosimetry with tooth enamel. Topics include the collection and preparation of samples, the evaluation, treatment and interpretation of the ESR signals, and the procedure of dose reconstruction. Two pathways are described to differentiate between doses from different internal and external sources. They are based on dose comparisons as evaluated from different tooth issues or from dose vs age dependencies obtained by ESR dosimetry from populations with different exposure conditions. The concepts given are illustrated by recently achieved ESR doses that were reconstructed from teeth of radiation workers and members of the public of the Southern Urals region, Russia.

Selective saturation method for EPR dosimetry with tooth enamel

The method of selective saturation proposed is based on the difference in the microwave (mw) power dependence of the background and radiation induced EPR components of the tooth enamel spectrum. The subtraction of the EPR spectrum recorded at low mw power from that recorded at higher mw power provides a considerable reduction of the background component in the spectrum. The resolution of the EPR spectrum could be improved 10-fold, however simultaneously the signal-to-noise ratio was found to be reduced twice. A detailed comparative study of reference samples with known absorbed doses was performed to demonstrate the advantage of the method. The application of the selective saturation method for EPR dosimetry with tooth enamel reduced the lower limit of EPR dosimetry to about 100 mGy.

The decay constant for irradiated human hair using EPR spectroscopy

This paper reports the results of a study of gamma-irradiated human hair using CW-EPR. The radiation centre in hair was determined, for the first time, to be characterized by a single decay constant with k = 4.86(9) microseconds-1 for brown and yellow hair and k = 1.45(10) microseconds-1 for red hair for initial doses between 50 and 634 Gy. It is suggested that human hair has the potential to be used as a dosimeter for accidental exposure to ionizing radiation if measurements are commenced within approximately 24 h.
