Abstract
Glechoma hederacea var. longituba (common name: ground ivy) has been used for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, cholelithiasis, colds, and inflammation. In the present study, three new sesquiterpene glycosides (1–3), two new diterpene glycosides (4 and 5), and four known compounds (6–9) were isolated from its MeOH extract. A structure elucidation was performed for the five new compounds (1–5) using 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, DP4+ and ECD calculations, and chemical methods. All the isolates (1–9) were assessed for their antineuroinflammatory activities on nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated BV-2 cells, nerve growth factor (NGF) secretion stimulation activities in C6 glioma cells, and cytotoxic activities against four human cancer cell lines (A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, and HCT15). Compounds 2 and 5–7 exhibited inhibitory effects on the NO production with IC50 values of 52.21, 47.90, 61.61, and 25.35 μM, respectively. Compound 5 also exhibited a significant stimulating effect on NGF secretion (122.77 ± 8.10%). Compound 9 showed potent cytotoxic activity against SK-OV-3 (IC50 = 3.76 μM) and SK-MEL-2 (IC50 = 1.48 μM) cell lines, while 7 displayed a strong cytotoxic activity against the SK-MEL-2 (IC50 = 9.81 μM) cell line.

Abstract
A new benzoic acid, 3-[2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)acetoxy]benzoic acid (1), and two new caffeoyl derivatives, methyl (3E,5Z)-di-O-caffeoylquinate (2) and dhurrin 6'-O-caffeate (3), along with 20 known compounds were isolated from the leaves of Ilex kaushue collected in Vietnam. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1 D and 2 D NMR spectroscopy, and high-resolution MS spectrometry. The absolute configuration of 2 and 3 was unambiguously established by comparison of experimental and calculated ECD spectra and/or chemical reactivity. In addition, new compounds were evaluated for inhibitory effects of their tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) production and cell cytotoxicity on lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW264 macrophage cells. All of those moderately suppressed TNF-α production in ratios of approximately 50% or higher at 25-100 µM, without cell cytotoxicity.

Abstract
Alpinia oxyphylla Miquel (Zingiberaceae) has been reported to show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. In this study, two new eudesmane sesquiterpenes, 7α-hydroperoxy eudesma-3,11-diene-2-one (1) and 7β-hydroperoxy eudesma-3,11-diene-2-one (2), and a new eremophilane sesquiterpene, 3α-hydroxynootkatone (3), were isolated from the MeOH extract of dried fruits of A. oxyphylla along with eleven known sesquiterpenes (4–14). The structures were elucidated by the analysis of 1D/2D NMR, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESIMS), and optical rotation data. Compounds (1–3, 5–14) were evaluated for their protective effects against tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP)-induced oxidative stress in adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs). As a result, treatment with isolated compounds, especially compounds 11 and 12, effectively reverted the damage of tBHP on ADMSCs in a dose-dependent manner. In particular, 11 and 12 at 50 µM improved the viability of tBHP-toxified ADMSCs by 1.69 ± 0.05-fold and 1.61 ± 0.03-fold, respectively.

Abstract
A new triterpenoidal saponin identified as 3-O-[β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-β-d-xylopyranosyl]-2β,3β,16α-trihydroxyolean-12-en-23,28-dioic acid-28-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-α-l-arabinopyranoside 1 together with a new oleanane triterpene identified as 2β,3β,13α,22α-tetrahydroxy olean-23,28-dioic acid 2 and 6 known compounds (3–8) have been isolated from Gladiolus segetum Ker-Gawl corms. The structural elucidation of the isolated compounds was confirmed using different chemical and spectroscopic methods, including 1D and 2D NMR experiments as well as HR-ESI-MS. Moreover, the in vitro cytotoxic activity of the fractions and that of the isolated compounds 1–8 were investigated against five human cancer cell lines (PC-3, A-549, HePG-2, MCF-7 and HCT-116) using doxorubicin as a reference drug. The results showed that the saponin fraction exhibited potent in vitro cytotoxic activity against the five human cancer cell lines, whereas the maximum activity was exhibited against the PC-3 and A-549 cell lines with the IC50 values of 1.13 and 1.98 μg mL−1, respectively. In addition, compound 1 exhibited potent activity against A-549 and PC-3 with the IC50 values of 2.41 μg mL−1 and 3.45 μg mL−1, respectively. Interestingly, compound 2 showed the maximum activity against PC-3 with an IC50 of 2.01 μg mL−1. These biological results were in harmony with that of the molecular modeling study, which showed that the cytotoxic activity of compound 2 might occur through the inhibition of the HER-2 enzyme. Abstract
Hyperpigmentation is considered by many to be a beauty problem and is responsible for photoaging. To treat this skin condition, medicinal cosmetics containing tyrosinase inhibitors are used, resulting in skin whitening. In this study, taraxerol methyl ether (1), spinasterol (2), 6-hydroxyflavanone (3), (+)-dihydrokaempferol (4), 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (5), taraxerol (6), taraxerone (7), and lupeol acetate (8) were isolated from Manilkara zapota bark. Their chemical structures were elucidated by analysis of their nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS) data, and by comparing them with data found in the literature. The in vitro antityrosinase, antioxidant, and cytotoxic activities of the isolated compounds (1-8) were evaluated. (+)-Dihydrokaempferol (4) exhibited higher monophenolase inhibitory activity than both kojic acid and α-arbutin. However, it showed diphenolase inhibitory activity similar to kojic acid. (+)-Dihydrokaempferol (4) was a competitive inhibitor of both monophenolase and diphenolase activities. It exhibited the strongest 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) activities of the isolated compounds. Furthermore, (+)-dihydrokaempferol (4) also demonstrated potent cytotoxicity in breast carcinoma cell line (BT474), lung bronchus carcinoma cell line (Chago-K1), liver carcinoma cell line (HepG2), gastric carcinoma cell line (KATO-III), and colon carcinoma cell line (SW620). These results suggest that M. zapota bark might be a good potential source of antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors for applications in cosmeceutical products.

Abstract
Cancer is the major cause of death in the world, representing a significant public health problem. Plants have been shown as a great source of secondary metabolites with anticancer activity. The aim of this work was evaluated the antiproliferative activity of the methanolic extracts, chemical fractions and the compound spinasterol isolated of medicinal plant Stegnosperma halimifolium. The methanolic extracts of stem, leaf and stem/leaf was obtained by maceration. The methanolic extract of stem was purified by successive extractions with solvents as n-hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol. The n-hexane fraction was separated by column chromatographic and monitored by thin layer chromatographic. The compound spinasterol was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and Mass Spectrometry. Methanolic extracts, chemical, chromatographic fractions and spinasterol was evaluated against RAW 264.7, M12.C3.F6, PC-3, LS-180, A549 and HeLa cancer cell lines by the standardized method MTT for determinate the antiproliferative activity. Methanolic extract of stem shown the better antiproliferative activity against the murine macrophage cancer cell line RAW 264.7. n-Hexane chemical fraction shown antiproliferative activity against human alveolar cancer cell line A549 and RAW 264.7. Was isolated and characterized a compound by NMR 1H and 13C, revealing the presence of sterol spinasterol. Spinasterol shown to have antiproliferative activity against cervical cancer cell line HeLa and RAW 264.7, indicating that spinasterol can be a responsible compound of antiproliferative activity found in the methanolic extract of Stegnosperma halimifolium.

Abstract
The inhibitory activity of 37 medicinal plant extracts against aldose reductase (AR) activity was evaluated. The most potent AR inhibitory activity was found in the MeOH extract of the leaves of Tussilago farfara (Compositae). Enzyme assay-guided fractionation of the extract led to the isolation of a new flavonoid glycoside, kaempferol 3- O-[3,4- O-(isopropylidene)-α-L-arabinopyranoside] (1), along with 15 known compounds (2–16), of which 3, 5, 13, 15, and 16 were isolated from T. farfara for the first time. The structures of 1–16 were elucidated based on MS and NMR data. Dicaffeoylquinic acid derivatives (7–12) showed potent AR inhibitory activity with IC50 values ranging from 0.58 to 5.38 μM, whereas flavonoid glycosides 1, 3, 5, and 6 showed weak inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 13.9, 15.1, 13.3, and 14.1 μM, respectively.

Abstract
A novel strategy of ultrafiltration LC-MS and in silico molecular docking was proposed to discover high-quality enzyme inhibitors from herbal medicines. Using this strategy, two compounds were predicted and finally demonstrated as potent xanthine oxidase inhibitors, whose in vitro IC50 values were lower than that of a positive control allopurinol.

Abstract
As part of our ongoing search for natural sources of therapeutic and preventive agents for diabetic complications, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of components of the fruit of Xanthium strumarium (X. strumarium) on aldose reductase (AR) and galactitol formation in rat lenses with high levels of glucose. To identify the bioactive components of X. strumarium, 7 caffeoylquinic acids and 3 phenolic compounds were isolated and their chemical structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence and comparison with published data. The abilities of 10 X. strumarium-derived components to counteract diabetic complications were investigated by means of inhibitory assays with rat lens AR (rAR) and recombinant human AR (rhAR). From the 10 isolated compounds, methyl-3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinate showed the most potent inhibition, with IC₅₀ values of 0.30 and 0.67 μM for rAR and rhAR, respectively. In the kinetic analyses using Lineweaver-Burk plots of 1/velocity and 1/substrate, methyl-3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinate showed competitive inhibition of rhAR. Furthermore, methyl-3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinate inhibited galactitol formation in the rat lens and in erythrocytes incubated with a high concentration of glucose, indicating that this compound may be effective in preventing diabetic complications.

Abstract
Methyl 3,5-dicaffeoyl quinate (MDQ), an active compound present in Kalopanax pictus, Salicornia herbacea L., Aster oharai and Solidago virga-aurea var. gigantean, is a dicaffeoylquinic acid derivative esterified by methanol. Recent studies have revealed that MDQ possesses multiple pharmacological activities, such as antitumor, antioxidative and cytoprotective activities. To date, there has been no attempt to test the action of MDQ in melanocytes. In this study, we investigated the effect of MDQ on melanogenesis in B16F10 mouse melanoma cells. MDQ inhibited melanin production and tyrosinase activity in B16F10 mouse melanoma cells without a direct inhibitory effect on mushroom tyrosinase activity. Furthermore, we also found that MDQ decreased protein expression levels of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase in B16F10 melanin cells. Meanwhile, phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) was significantly reduced after 6h MDQ treatment, and this expression recovered at 48 h. The phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) was significantly enhanced at 12-48 h, whereas no effect was observed in the phosphorylation of Akt. In addition, MDQ treatment did not significantly alter the expression levels of total p38 MAPK, ERK, and Akt. Thus, it seems that inhibition of phospho-p38 MAPK and activation of phospho-ERK may lead to the suppression of melanogenesis in MDQ-treated B16F10 mouse melanoma cells.

Abstract
Methyl 3,5-dicaffeoyl quinate (MDQ) is a flavonoid glucoside found in several plants that scavenges 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals and peroxynitrite, and inhibits the formation of cholesteryl ester hydroperoxide during the copper ion-induced oxidation of blood plasma in rats. In this study, MDQ inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in HT-29 cells in a dose-dependent manner as detected by 1-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-3,5-diphenylformazan (MTT), trypan blue exclusion, and flow cytometric assays. Western blot analysis showed that apoptosis was dependent on caspase-3 activity. PARP cleavage and the cytosolic release of cytochrome c from mitochondria increased significantly. In addition, these events were accompanied by a collapse in the mitochondrial membrane potential and a decreased Bcl-2/Bax ratio. Furthermore, the MDQ-induced G(0)/G(1) arrest was correlated with an increase in p27 and a decrease in cyclin D1 and p53. MDQ also inhibited the phosphorylation of PI3K/Akt and ERK; significantly reduced NF-κB; and in general displayed a significant anti-proliferative effect via a cell cycle arrest and apoptotic induction in HT-29 cells. These results suggest that MDQ has therapeutic potential against human colon carcinoma.

Abstract
Aster flaccidus bge has been used as traditional medicine in northwestern China. Two new phenylpropanoids (1-2) including one lignan: (7'R, 8S)-9'-lariciresinol-(alpha-methyl)-butanoate (1), 5,9-dimethoxyl-7-(alpha-methyl)-butanoxyl-phenyl-2E-propenol-(alpha-methyl)-butanoate (2) isolated from the chloroform extract of the root of Aster flaccidus bge were identified by means of extensive spectroscopic studies: 1D and 2D NMR spectra as well as HRMS analysis. They have not obvious anti-HIV-1 therapeutic activity (TI=1.0-1.1) compared with AZT (TI=55,556) as the result of the determination of their in vitro anti-HIV-1 activity while compound 2 displays strong antitumor activity against BEL 7402 (human liver carcinoma) with cisplatin as a positive control and the effect increases with the measuring-time going on (24 h, IC(50): 106.67+/-8.47 microM - 72 h, IC(50): 50.51+/-6.11 microM).

Abstract
The chromatographic separation of the MeOH extract from the aerial parts of Syneilesis palmata led to the isolation of a new sesquiterpene glycoside 4, together with four known compounds. Their structures were characterized to be 4beta,5beta-epoxy-caryophill-8,(15)-ene (1), 3beta-hydroxy-gultin-5-ene (2), 4alpha,5beta-dihydroxy-caryophill-8,(15)-ene (3), (-)-oplopan-4-one-10-alpha-O-beta-D-glucose (4) and 3-hexenyl-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranose (5), based on spectroscopic and chemical methods. Compound 2 showed moderate cytotoxicity against five human tumor cell lines in vitro with its ED50 values ranging from 5.90 to approximately 10.83 microg/mL.
