Abstract
Objectives Increased depression severity has been linked to cognitive impairment (CI). Importantly, CI is a known risk factor for impaired balance and falls. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between CI and neuromuscular functions and secondarily it aims to find out if CI is a potential predictor for neuromuscular functions deficits in depressed elderly. Methods Eighty-four depressed elderly participated in the study. Assessment for CI symptoms were done using Mini Mental Status Examination (MMSE) in subjects having confirmed depression. Neuromuscular functions such as balance confidence, static and dynamic balance, functional mobility, and fall risk were subjectively assessed using Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) Scale, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG) Test, and Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA), respectively. Results Pearson's analysis revealed that there was moderate positive linear-correlation between MMSE and BBS (R = 0.382, p = <0.001) and between MMSE and ABC (R = 0.229, p = 0.036*). Further, regression analysis (R 2) revealed that MMSE significantly predicted the neuromuscular functions using BBS [F(1, 82) = 14.013, p < 0.001, with an R 2 of 0.146] and ABC [F(1, 82) = 4.545, p= 0.036*, with an R 2 of 0.053]. Conclusion Results of this study points to an impaired CI as a possible factor in development of neuromuscular function impairment in depressed elderly.

Abstract
The available evidence suggests that affective disorders, such as depression and anxiety, increase risk for accelerated cognitive decline and late-life dementia in aging individuals. Behavioral neuropsychology studies also showed that cognitive decline is a central feature of aging impacting the quality of life. Motor deficits are common after traumatic brain injuries and stroke, affect subjective well-being, and are linked with reduced quality of life. Currently, restorative therapies that target the brain directly to restore cognitive and motor tasks in aging and disease are available. However, the very same drugs used for therapeutic purposes are employed by athletes as stimulants either to increase performance for fame and financial rewards or as recreational drugs. Unfortunately, most of these drugs have severe side effects and pose a serious threat to the health of athletes. The use of performance-enhancing drugs by children and teenagers has increased tremendously due to the decrease in the age of players in competitive sports and the availability of various stimulants in many forms and shapes. Thus, doping may cause serious health-threatening conditions including, infertility, subdural hematomas, liver and kidney dysfunction, peripheral edema, cardiac hypertrophy, myocardial ischemia, thrombosis, and cardiovascular disease. In this review, we focus on the impact of doping on psychopathological disorders, cognition, and depression. Occasionally, we also refer to chronic use of therapeutic drugs to increase physical performance and highlight the underlying mechanisms. We conclude that raising awareness on the health risks of doping in sport for all shall promote an increased awareness for healthy lifestyles across all generations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with depression are often found to perform worse on cognitive tests and to have an increased risk of dementia. The causes and the direction of these associations are however not well understood. We looked at two specific hypotheses, the aetiological risk factor hypothesis and the reverse causality hypothesis. METHOD We analysed observational data from two cohorts, English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) and Health and Retirement Study (HRS), using cross-lagged panel models with unit fixed effects. Each model was run once with depression and repeated with cognition as the dependent variable and the other variable as the main explanatory variable. All models were estimated separately for contemporaneous effects and lagged effects up to 8 years in the past. We contrasted the results with models making the random effects assumption. RESULTS Evidence from the fixed effects models is mixed. We find no evidence for the reverse causality hypothesis in ELSA and HRS. While there is no evidence for the aetiological risk factors hypothesis in ELSA, results from HRS indicate some effects. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that current levels of cognitive function do not influence future levels of depression. Results in HRS provide some evidence that current levels of depressive symptoms influence future cognition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the cross-sectional association between depressive symptoms and metabolic risk factors with cognitive function in a middle-aged population. METHODS A stratified subsample of the CARTaGENE (CaG) cohort (n = 1991) was used to compare cognitive function outcomes between groups. The stratification was based on the presence of depressive symptoms and metabolic dysregulation (MetD): the presence of a) neither condition (reference group); b) MetD only; c) depressive symptoms only; and d) both depressive symptoms and MetD. Individuals with type 2 diabetes were excluded. Three cognitive domains were assessed: processing speed, episodic memory, and executive function. An overall cognitive function score, standardized for age and education, was computed. Poor cognitive function was defined as the lower quartile of the overall cognitive function distribution. Linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS The poorest cognitive performance was observed in the group with both depressive symptoms and MetD, followed by the group with depressive symptoms only, then the group with MetD only and the reference group. Mean (SD) overall cognition scores for the four groups were -0.25 (1.13), -0.13 (1.05), 0.11 (0.90), and 0.15 (0.93), respectively. Linear regression analyses suggested a linear increase in cognitive function across groups.In the logistic regression analyses, the highest risk of poor cognitive function was observed in the comorbid (depressive symptoms and MetD) group (adjusted OR = 1.99, 95% CI 1.46, 2.71). CONCLUSION Comorbidity of depressive symptoms and MetD was associated with reduced cognitive performance in middle-aged adults without diabetes.KEY POINTSPoor cognitive function is a major public health concern and can be potentially prevented by targeting its modifiable risk factors.Metabolic dysregulation and depression have both been independently associated with poor cognitive function.Comorbidity of metabolic dysregulation and depressive symptoms is associated with an increased risk of poor cognitive function in middle-aged individuals.Future health interventions might benefit by screening for comorbidity in patients with poor cognitive function and by targeting depression and metabolic dysregulation together.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Late-life depression (LLD) is considered as a prodrome to dementia and plays a major role in the development of long-term cognitive disabilities. We aimed to estimate the prevalence and correlates of LLD and cognitive impairment and to explore their associations among older adults in India. METHODS Data for this study was derived from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) Wave 1 (2017-18). The total sample included 31,464 (15,098 male and 16,366 female) older individuals aged 60 years and above. Cognitive impairment measured from various domains derived from the cognitive module of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), and major depression measured by the CIDI-SF (Composite International Diagnostic Interview- Short Form) were the outcome variables. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariable analyses were performed to fulfill the objectives of the study. RESULTS The overall prevalence of LLD and cognitive impairment for the current sample was 8.7% and 13.7 % respectively. Among older individuals who have rated their health status as poor were 2.59 times more likely to suffer from LLD [OR: 2.59, CI: 2.24-2.99] as compared to their counterparts. The older adults who had difficulty in activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) were 74% and 69 % more likely to suffer from LLD. Similarly, older adults who were depressed had higher odds of cognitive impairment [OR: 1.22, CI: 1.01-1.48] compared to their counterparts. Also, older adults who were depressed and belonged to rural areas were 2.58 times [AOR: 2.58, CI: 1.95-3.41] more likely to be cognitively impaired than those who were not depressed and resided in urban areas. CONCLUSIONS Depression is linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia; therefore, failing to diagnose and treat LLD in later life may have significant health implications. Moreover, treatment under the care of a cognitive neurologist or geriatric psychiatrist is recommended for people with LLD and cognitive disability due to both the disorders' complex existence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment (CI) is a key feature of late life depression (LLD), but the contribution of underlying neurodegenerative pathology remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To evaluate cognitive dysfunction in LLD relative to a sample of nondepressed (ND) older adults with matched levels of memory impairment and amyloid-β (Aβ) burden. METHODS Participants included 120 LLD and 240 ND older adults matched on age, education, sex, Mini-Mental State Exam, mild cognitive impairment diagnosis, and PET Aβ burden. RESULTS LLD showed higher rates of impairment relative to ND with 54.6% of the LLD sample demonstrating impairment in at least one cognitive domain compared to 42.9% of controls (H = 7.13, p = 0.008). LLD had poorer performance and higher rates of impairment on Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test learning and memory compared to controls. In the overall sample, Aβ positivity was associated with worse performance on Logical Memory I (p = 0.044), Logical Memory II (p = 0.011), and Trail Making Test -B (p = 0.032), and APOEɛ4 genotype was associated with worse performance on Logical Memory I (p = 0.022); these relationships did not differ between LLD and ND. CONCLUSION LLD showed higher rates of CI driven by focal deficits in verbal learning and memory. Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers were associated with worse performance on timed set-shifting and story learning and memory, and these relationships were not impacted by depression status. These findings suggest that AD may account for a portion of previously reported multi-domain CI in LLD and highlight the potential for AD to confound studies of cognition in LLD.

Abstract
The aim was to investigate the pattern and rate of cognitive decline across distinctive trajectories of depressive symptoms in older adults. In this prospective multinational cohort study on 69,066 participants (on average 64 years at baseline, 55% women), assessments of cognitive functions (immediate recall, delayed recall, verbal fluency) and depressive symptoms (EURO-D scale) were conducted at 2-year intervals. The trajectories of depressive symptoms were obtained using latent growth mixture modelling, cognitive decline was assessed using smoothing splines and linear mixed effects models. Four distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified: constantly low (n = 49,660), constantly high (n = 2999), increasing (n = 6828) and decreasing (n = 9579). Individuals with increasing and constantly high depressive symptoms showed linear cognitive decline, while those with constantly low and decreasing depressive symptoms had fluctuating cognition. Participants with increasing depressive symptoms had the fastest decline, while those with decreasing symptoms were spared from decline in cognition. This study suggests that the pattern as well as the rate of cognitive decline co-occurs with specific patterns of changes in depressive symptoms over time. The most pronounced cognitive decline is present in individuals, in whom depressive symptoms increase late in life. Unique mechanisms of cognitive decline may exist for subgroups of the population, and are associated with the trajectory of depressive symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Antidepressants have limited efficacy in older adults with depression and cognitive impairment, and psychosocial interventions for this population have been inadequately investigated. Problem Adaptation Therapy (PATH) is a psychosocial intervention for older adults with major depression, cognitive impairment, and disability. DESIGN This study tests the efficacy of PATH versus Supportive Therapy for Cognitively Impaired Older Adults (ST-CI) in reducing depression (Montgamery Asberg Depression Rating Scale [MADRS]) and disability (World Health Organization Disability Assessments Schedule-II [WHODAS-II]) and improving cognitive outcomes (Mini Mental State Examination [MMSE]) over 24 weeks (12 weeks of treatment and 12-week post-treatment follow-up). SETTING Participants were recruited through collaborating community agencies of Weill Cornell Institute of Geriatric Psychiatry. Both interventions and all research assessments were conducted at home. PARTICIPANTS Thirty-five older adults (age ≥ 65 years) with major depression and cognitive impairment no dementia (CIND). INTERVENTIONS PATH aims to increase emotion regulation by incorporating a problem-solving approach, teaching compensatory strategies, and inviting caregiver participation. Supportive Therapy aims to facilitate the expression of affect, as well as promote empathy. MEASUREMENTS Depression was measured using the MADRS, disability using the WHODAS-II, and cognition using the MMSE. RESULTS PATH participants showed significantly greater reduction in MADRS total score (7.04 points at 24 weeks, treatment group by time interaction: F[1,24.4] = 7.61, p = 0.0108), greater improvement in MMSE total score (2.30 points at 24 weeks, treatment group by time interaction: F[1,39.8] = 13.31, p = 0.0008), and greater improvement in WHODAS-II total score (2.95 points at 24 weeks, treatment group by time interaction: F[1,89] = 4.93, p = 0.0290) than ST-CI participants over the 24-week period. CONCLUSIONS PATH participants had better depression, cognitive, and disability outcomes than ST-CI participants over 6 months. PATH may provide relief to depressed older adults with CIND who currently have limited treatment options.

Abstract
Objectives We aimed to examine the effects of various leisure activities on cognitive impairment in young-old (aged 65–74 years) and old-old (aged ≥ 75 years) adults. Methods In total, 10,279 elderly Korean individuals from the 2014 Korean National Survey on Older Adults’ cohort were enrolled in our study. Cognitive impairment was assessed using the standardized score of the Mini-Mental State Examination for Dementia Screening, whereas leisure activities were recorded via self-reporting of the extent and type of leisure activity the subjects involved in over the past year. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the effect of leisure activities on cognitive impairment, while controlling for potential covariates. Results The subjects were more likely to participate in cognitive activities than in non-exercise physical activities. After controlling for selected covariates, involvement in cognitive activities was found to be a significant predictor of cognitive impairment in both the groups, whereas involvement in non-exercise physical activities was not a predictor of cognitive impairment in individuals aged ≥ 75 years. Moreover, depressive symptoms, rural residence, and hearing difficulties were common predictors of cognitive impairment among elderly-Korean-individuals. Conclusion Leisure activity involvement may help delay cognitive impairment, which is often concomitant with aging. Hence, an early intervention service may significantly benefit both young-old and old-old individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS To determine whether high levels of serum total cholesterol and low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc) are associated with increased mortality in the elderly. METHODS Prospective cohort study of 1032 non-institutionalized people aged 70 in the city of Turku, Southern Finland. The cohort population was recruited as part of a larger longitudinal aging study, the Turku Elderly Study. Fasting serum levels of total cholesterol, HDL-c and triglycerides were measured, and the amount of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was calculated at baseline. The cohort was followed for mortality for 12 years, and the causes of death were recorded and further classified into cardiovascular and other causes of death. The hazard ratios of dying for subjects in various cholesterol quartiles were computed by the Cox proportional hazards model, adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors and pre-existing medical conditions. RESULTS Low levels of serum total cholesterol and HDL-c were associated with a greater risk of death over a follow-up of 12 years. After adjustment for several cardiovascular risk factors, the association between total cholesterol and survival changed. All-cause mortality seemed to be highest in the highest quartile of total cholesterol and nearly as high in the lowest quartile of total cholesterol, suggesting a U-shaped connection, but the differences were not statistically significant. However, cardiovascular mortality was significantly lowest in the lowest quartile of total cholesterol and significantly highest in the lowest quartile of HDL-c. CONCLUSIONS High levels of serum total cholesterol and particularly low levels of HDL-c seem to be risk factors for cardiovascular mortality even in the elderly population.

Abstract
Associates and predictors of lowered mood were investigated in a 10-year prospective study of 411 random persons of three birth cohorts (aged 75, 80 and 85 years) in Helsinki, Finland. High Zung-score ( > 45 points = lowered mood) was found in 24% of subjects and clearly associated with age. Lowered mood was also associated with pessimistic attitudes towards life and impaired survival prognosis. The mean Zung-score fell drastically during the first follow-up (from 39.1 to 34.6 points, P < 0.001) and remained unchanged thereafter at 10-year examination of the survivors (33.9 points). Lowering mood (increase in Zung-score) was best predicted by low baseline Zung-score (r = -0.673, P < 0.001), high baseline MMSE-score (r = -159. P < 0.05) and simultaneous changes in MMSE-scores (r = 0.269, P < 0.01). The data show that lowered mood is associated with pessimistic attitudes towards life, cognitive impairment and impaired survival and that cognitive impairment exposes a patient to lowering mood. It is possible that a screening program improves the mood of aged population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive symptoms (DS) are very common in elders, particularly among women, and their prevalence rates vary widely across countries. METHODS A random sample of noninstitutionalized men (n = 867) and women (n = 1531), aged 65 years and older, from the Veneto region, northeastern Italy, were interviewed and participated in a brief physical examination in their homes. The prevalence rates of DS and the associated physical, social, and psychological factors were analyzed. RESULTS The overall prevalence rate of DS was 58% in women and 34% in men (p <.0001), but there was no significant trend with age. Women were at higher risk of DS (OR = 1.63) than men, even after adjusting for traditional risk factors, such as fair-poor self-rated health, sleep disturbances and use of sleep medications, lack of support from social and family network, and physical and cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence that older women more frequently report DS than men, independently from the presence of traditional risk and associated factors. Cultural and lifestyle factors throughout life might explain this gender difference.
