An Overview of Antibiotics as Emerging Contaminants: Occurrence in Bivalves as Biomonitoring Organisms

In recent years, the use of antibiotics has increased worldwide in both human and veterinary fields. This led to them accumulating in the environment to such an extent that they are actually included in the category of contaminants of emerging concern. For this reason, many of them have been included in monitoring lists of potential pollutants by competent authorities in order to limit their concentration in surface waters and to determine the risk to the aquatic environments. From this perspective, the aim of this review is to update and discuss the available data on antibiotic residues, using bivalves as biomonitoring organisms. Bivalves are good candidate for this purpose, being globally present in large and accessible populations, sedentary and able to accumulate several xenobiotics thanks to their large filtration capacity. The current research indicates that antibiotics’ presence in bivalves has been investigated along European, American and Asian coasts. Except for tetracycline, determined at high concentration in the North Adriatic Sea, all antibiotics residues in bivalves were under the maximum residual limit established by the competent authorities. Nevertheless, further investigations are necessary in order to prevent antimicrobial resistance, preserve the environment from antibiotic pollution and monitor the associated risk for animals and humans.

Abstract

Antibiotics are used for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes in both human and veterinary medicine and as growth promoting agents in farms and aquaculture. They can accumulate in environmental matrices and in the food chain, causing adverse effects in humans and animals including the development of antibiotic resistance. This review aims to update and discuss the available data on antibiotic residues, using bivalves as biomonitoring organisms. The current research indicates that antibiotics’ presence in bivalves has been investigated along European, American and Asian coasts, with the majority of studies reported for the last. Several classes of antibiotics have been detected, with a higher frequency of detection reported for macrolides, sulfonamides and quinolones. The highest concentration was instead reported for tetracyclines in bivalves collected in the North Adriatic Sea. Only oxytetracycline levels detected in this latter site exceeded the maximum residual limit established by the competent authorities. Moreover, the risk that can be derived from bivalve consumption, calculated considering the highest concentrations of antibiotics residues reported in the analyzed studies, is actually negligible. Nevertheless, further supervisions are needed in order to preserve the environment from antibiotic pollution, prevent the development of antimicrobial resistance and reduce the health risk derived from seafood consumption.

Pesticides contamination in the Thamirabarani, a perennial river in peninsular India: The first report on ecotoxicological and human health risk assessment

This study evaluates the distribution of pesticides and assesses the ecological and human health risks associated with pesticide residues concentration in the Thamirabarani River, the only perennial river in Tamil Nadu, India. Observed a variation in the pesticide concentration in the water (not detected (ND)-31.69 μg/L), sediments (ND-14.77 μg/kg), and fish (0.02-26.05 μg/kg). Endosulfan, aldrin, and endrin were the predominant organochlorine pesticides present in water, sediments, and fish. The average concentration of pesticides (except endosulfan) in water and sediments was found to be below the acceptable threshold as per the water and sediment quality guidelines, posing no ecological hazard to aquatic organisms. The calculated risk quotient and toxic unit (0.1 > TU/RQ ≤ 1) represent low-to-medium acute and chronic toxicity to the aquatic organisms inhabiting the river basin. The average concentration of pesticides in fish (Labeorohita) was also below the maximum residual limits set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). However, the calculated daily intakes of endosulfan, aldrin, and endrin were above the CAC-acceptable daily intake guidelines. The human health risk assessment showed that children and adults exposed to pesticides in water and sediments through ingestion and dermal contact could have higher cancer risks (CR > 10-4) than inhalation. This study recommends implementing effective and routine pollution management schemes to avoid pesticide threats to aquatic and human health.

Macroelements and toxic trace elements in muscle and liver of fish species from the largest three reservoirs in Turkey and human risk assessment based on the worst-case scenarios

Macroelement (Na, K, Ca, Mg and P) and toxic trace element (As, Cd and Pb) contents were investigated in muscle and liver of the two fish species (common carp and trout barb) from the largest three reservoirs (Atatürk, Keban and Karakaya) in Turkey. Also, human health risks for consumers using the worst-case scenarios were assessed. Potassium was the most abundant macroelement in muscle of both fish species in all reservoirs, whereas phosphorus was the most abundant in liver. Toxic trace element contents in the liver of the two fish species from the three reservoirs were higher than those in muscle. The mean levels of As and Pb in muscle and liver of fish species from the Karakaya Reservoir were higher than those from the other two reservoirs. Three-way ANOVA showed that the interaction between fish species, reservoir and fish tissue was significant for only Cd (p < 0.01). The maximum levels of As, Cd and Pb in muscle and liver of fish species from the three reservoirs were below permissible limits. The estimated daily intakes of toxic trace elements in fish species were much lower than their corresponding tolerable daily intakes. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and total THQ values in fish species were below 1, which indicated that non-carcinogenic health effects are not expected. The carcinogenic risk values for inorganic arsenic were within acceptable range. The results revealed that toxic trace elements in common carp and trout barb from the Atatürk, Keban and Karakaya reservoirs do not pose a significant health risk to consumers.

Environmental contaminants in fish species from a large dam reservoir and their potential risks to human health

The residue levels of antibiotics, metals and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were investigated in six fish species from the Karakaya Dam Reservoir, Turkey. Among monitored antibiotics, only enrofloxacin and ofloxacin were detected in muscle of fish species. Enrofloxacin levels in positive samples ranged from 0.0034 to 0.0073 mg/kg. It was detected in four fish species (trout barb, common carp, chub and Euphrates barbell), while ofloxacin was only found in common carp with the concentration of 0.0072 mg/kg. Both enrofloxacin and ofloxacin levels were below the maximum residue levels. No detectable residues of any OCPs were found in fish species. The highest toxic metal (As, Cd and Pb) content was detected in Euphrates barbell (0.103 mg/kg). Arsenic, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn levels were well below the maximum permissible limits. The levels of antibiotics and metals found in fish species in the present study were generally lower than or comparable to those reported in other water bodies. According to estimated daily intake and hazard quotient values, antibiotics and metals detected in these wild fish species do not appear to pose a serious risk to public health.

Organochlorine pesticide, antibiotic and heavy metal residues in mussel, crayfish and fish species from a reservoir on the Euphrates River, Turkey

This study investigated the residues of 19 organochlorine pesticides, 37 antibiotics and 5 heavy metals in biota samples (one mussel species, one crayfish species, six wild fish species and one farmed fish species) from the Keban Dam Reservoir on the Euphrates River, Turkey. Among monitored OCPs, only p,p'-DDE was detected in biota samples. It was found only in mussel, fish muscle and fish gill samples. The highest concentration of p,p'-DDE (0.032 mg/kg ww) was determined in the gill of common carp, which was found to be below the maximum residue limit (MRL). Only sulfadimethoxine was detected among antibiotics in biota samples. Its maximum concentration (0.0044 mg/kg ww) did not exceed the MRL of 0.1 mg/kg. Sulfadimethoxine was found only in muscle and gill of common carp collected from site S6, where there are many rainbow trout cage farms. However, no detectable residue of sulfadimethoxine was found in farmed rainbow trout. The highest concentrations of As, Cd and Pb were detected in mussels, while the highest concentrations Cu and Zn were determined in crayfish. Metal concentrations in biota samples did not exceed the maximum permissible levels. According to these results, the consumption of biota samples from the Keban Dam Reservoir is safe for human health.

Persistent organic pollutants in muscle of fish collected from the Nové Mlýny reservoir in Southern Moravia, Czech Republic

The aim of the present study was to investigate the content of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in muscle tissues of fish, i.e. carp (Cyprinus carpio, L.), bream (Abramis brama, L.) and pike perch (Stizostedion lucioperca, L.) from the middle Nové Mlýny reservoir and compare our results with previous corresponding studies. Samples were analysed by gas chromatography with ion trap tandem mass spectrometry. The highest contents of all pollutants were determined in muscle tissue of bream. The analysis of HCHs showed that β-HCH was the most abundant. PCB congener 28 was evaluated as the predominant PCB congener. The metabolite p,p'-DDE exhibited the highest concentration of all the monitored metabolites. The monitoring confirmed significantly (P < 0.01) higher concentrations of OCP and PCB in muscle of bream compared to carp and pike perch. The contents of pollutants in our study were found to be lower in comparison to the findings of some previous studies.

Organochlorine compound residues in muscle of wild boar (Sus scrofa L.) and red deer (Cervus elaphus L.): effects of age and sex

Twenty-six organochlorine pesticides and 7 polychlorinated biphenyls were measured in muscle of wild boar and red deer from the Czech Republic. The concentration of DDT and its metabolites was higher (p < 0.01) in wild boar than in red deer, while PCBs and HCH were higher (p < 0.01) in red deer than in wild boar. The concentrations of DDT and its metabolites, hexachlorobenzene and hexachlorocyclohexane isomers were higher (p < 0.05) in juvenile wild boar than in adults. PCB 153 and p,p'-DDE were the most prominent pollutants in both red deer and wild boar.
